Thrive Solo

Lucy Meggeson

Let’s be real — being single and child-free? It’s pretty damn awesome. Don’t believe me? Stick around. I promise you, by listening to this podcast, you’re going to start seeing your solo life in a whole new light — one that feels empowering, exciting, and full of possibility.

I’m Lucy Meggeson, and I’m here to help you stop seeing singlehood as a consolation prize and start embracing it as the incredible opportunity that it is. Because the truth? Being single isn’t second best. It’s not a waiting room. And it sure as hell isn’t a life of lack. In fact, when you lean into it, it can be just as fulfilling—if not more so—than being coupled up with kids.

And besides, no matter what our relationship status, what we all really want is to feel good in the here and now. So instead of focusing on what’s ‘missing,’ let’s focus on what’s possible. The freedom. The adventure. The extra time and headspace to create a life that’s truly our own.

Because here’s the thing: you are so much more powerful than you realise. Your thoughts shape your reality. And when you shift your mindset, you shift your life. My mission isn’t just to help you feel better about being single—it’s to help you recognise your own agency. To help you see that you are the creator of your own experience. And that you, and you alone, get to decide what your life looks like.

So join me here every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, and let’s build lives that feel joyful, meaningful, and wildly fulfilling — on our own terms.

Let’s Thrive Solo…together.

The One About The Singles Bill Of Rights - Part 1

Send us Fan Mail In this week’s episode, I’m talking about The Singles Bill Of Rights with Madeleine Crown & Christina Campbell. The Singles Bill of Rights (SBR) is a policy proposal. Its creation has an American focus and will work as a springboard for other countries to follow suit – adapting it to fit their own needs. Ultimately, Madeleine, Christina, and the rest of the SBR team would like to convene a UN Convention for Singles Bill of Rights, and create a Universal Bill of Rights for Singles. Madeleine is a Lead Project Assistant for an engineering firm, a scandalous divorcee/born again Spinster, a single dog mom, and a self-guided researcher and writer regarding feminism and women’s creativity. She is currently working on a comparative study of women writers and an almanac of women writers across cultures and history, in addition to working on the Singles Bill of Rights. Christina co-founded the singles' advocacy blog Onely, long before singles’ rights were cool. Her articles about marital status discrimination have appeared in The Atlantic and elsewhere. She is seeking representation for her memoir about invisible illness, which contains award-winning essays on physical and mental health. She lives in Northern Virginia with her infrared sauna and two semi-geriatric cats. Both women are happily single and childfree. Topics that we cover are: how both women intend to be single for the rest of their lives; how despite being married twice, Madeleine had always yearned for spinsterhood; what exactly the Singles Bill of Rights is and why it’s so important; how pervasive singlism is in all areas of society from politics to academia; how they want to address such things as the perception of singlehood as something unusual, undesirable, or just a passing phase; how they will be including the right to be charged for services without a penalty for being single; how businesses, companies, and tax are set up for couples, not singles; gift taxing, retirement accounts, and how important is for single people to be given the same rights as married couples; how single people spend an extortionate amount more money than couples over the course of their lifetime; bereavement leave, and the unfair treatment of singles in this regard; how people are - consciously or unconsciously - considered more valuable when they’re married; how singles aren’t really celebrated for anything during the course of their lifetime. Minisode Ep.114 - You're Allowed To Quit

Send us Fan Mail On today's minisode, I'm talking about quitting. We're often lead to believe that quitting something means we've 'failed', and that it's mainly a bad thing to quit. But I don't believe this to be the case. We have to know when quitting is actually a win, and we need to muster the courage to do it - when we know in our hearts it's right for us - despite disappointing others. The One Where I Talk To Author, Marianne Power - Part 2

Send us Fan Mail In this week’s episode, the fabulous Marianne Power is back for Part 2 of our conversation! Marianne is a freelance journalist and author who lives in London. Her first book, ‘Help Me! How Self-Help Has Not Changed My Life’, an international bestseller, is an irresistibly funny and incredibly moving book about a wild and ultimately redemptive journey that will resonate with anyone who’s ever dreamed of finding happiness. Her second book which comes out in August but is available for pre-order right now, is called ‘Love Me! One Woman’s Search For A Different Happy Ever After’. Honest, intimate and inspiring, Love Me! is about the freedom to envision the life you want, and finding the courage to choose it. Marianne is single and childfree, but surrounded by love in the form of friends and lovers. Topics that Marianne & I cover are: how Marianne’s Irish catholic upbringing meant that boys were alien to her; the AIDS adverts from the 80s, and their impact on Marianne; how she always had insecurities around sex; the first tantra retreat that Marianne was invited to attend, and how it went; how tantra is actually a spiritual practice that includes physical connections and relationships; how the first retreat was utterly petrifying, but ultimately a beautiful experience; when Marianne exclaimed “I want to practice touching a penis!”, and how she practised on her friend; how we all have areas of shame around sex; why there’s no such thing as being good or bad at sex; how we would all benefit from voicing our insecurities around sex; how Marianne is now more relaxed around sex, and has let go of the shame she once felt; why being honest about the things we’re ashamed or embarrassed about can be so freeing; the 80 year old woman who’d never had sex, and who attended the tantra retreat; how Marianne wants to celebrate and lift up both single women, and women in relationships; why we should try and think about love as being something we give, rather than something we get. Topics that Marianne & I cover are: Marianne’s first book, Help Me!, and what prompted her to write it; how initially, she thought self-help books would help her to be ‘perfect’; why stepping outside of our comfort zones is important, but why baby steps are essential; the downsides of the self-help industry; how Marianne is now living a life of love, and friendship, and sex, and freedom - which is exactly what she wanted when she started writing the book; the idea that intentionally single people are ‘running away’ from intimacy; how during her years of being single, Marianne always wanted to be ‘normal’; how the statistics show that single people are generally very happy, and that marriage doesn’t actually make you happier; how Marianne discovered Bella DePaulo, and her concept of being ‘single at heart’; the book that made her realise she had negative beliefs about women; how women have been conditioned to be more concerned with the needs of others than their own needs; the time Marianne interviewed Gabor Mate, and the fascinating topics they talked about; why we need to fill our own cups before serving the needs of others; how women tend to bond over their woes rather than their strengths; why we as women need to start ‘bragging’; how the words we use about ourselves are more important than we realise; why we all need to start being kinder to ourselves. Minisode Ep.112 - If Taylor Says So...

Send us Fan Mail On today's minisode, I'm talking about why we should embrace enthusiasm. Taylor Swift once said: "The worst kind of person is someone who makes someone feel bad, dumb or stupid for being excited about something.” And I couldn't agree more. (As if I needed another reason to love her.) As someone who has always been a very enthusiastic person myself, I know what it feels like to be laughed at or shamed for getting 'over-excited' about things, whether that be my new favourite song, or a beautiful butterfly. But despite those who may sneer at our joy, there are many reasons why it's a really good thing to be enthusiastic and why, actually, we should turn the dial up on our passion, rather than dial it down. Thursday Thoughts - Visualisation

Send us Fan Mail In this week's episode, Polly and I are talking about visualisation. David Cameron Gikandi wrote that “life is images of the mind expressed”, and he isn’t the only one who believes / believed that everything starts in our imagination. There are multiple scientific studies that show how visualising can be an incredibly powerful tool when it comes to bringing the things we desire into our lives. Like anything else, it’s a practice, and one that Polly and I both find quite hard. But if we can hold a vision of what we want in our minds, and take a few minutes every day to allow our imagination to wander, then we’re training our brains to be on the lookout for the people, opportunities and circumstances that can help us get to where we want to go. We hope you’ll find something useful in here! The One Where I Talk To Author & Academic, Caroline Magennis

Send us Fan Mail In this week’s episode, I’m talking to the fabulous Caroline Magennis. Caroline is an Associate Professor in Contemporary Literature at the University of Salford. She’s also an author, and her brand new book from Icon Books, which came out in May, is called Harpy: A Manifesto for Childfree Women. She lives in north-west England and is happily childfree. Topics that Caroline & I cover are: how it never really occurred to Caroline to have children; how for many people, it’s a feeling rather than a decision, to not have kids; how much women’s experience of the stigma varies according to their cultural and socio-economic backgrounds; how people used to tell Caroline that she would change her mind about having kids; how the people who ask the most prying questions tend to not have very much going on in their own lives; why Caroline used the word ‘Harpy’ in the title of her book; the cultural messaging around childless women that motivated Caroline to write the book; the older women Caroline interviewed who didn’t regret not having kids, and who had led wonderful lives; why Caroline wanted to look into the nuance of childless women’s experiences; how almost all of Caroline’s interviewees spoke to the freedom of not having children; how there is a pressure on childless women to ‘do something amazing’, in order to justify their existence; why loneliness isn’t just reserved for single, childfree women; the different ways women without kids describe themselves; why being childfree is the least interesting thing about us! how Caroline’s Irish upbringing affected her experience of not having children. Thursday Thoughts - Follow What Feels Good

Send us Fan Mail On this week’s Thursday Thoughts, Polly and I are talking about the importance of following what feels good. The truth is that we are all 99% energy, and we’re all vibrating at different frequencies ranging from the more ‘high vibe’ states such as joy and appreciation, to the more ‘low vibe’ states such as anger and shame. Like attracts like, so when we’re feeling good, we’re going to attract people and circumstances vibrating at a similarly high frequency. And by the same token, when our general mood is low, we will attract more of the people and circumstances also vibrating at lower frequencies. So how we’re feeling is important, and it’s up to us to check in with ourselves on a regular basis so that we can intentionally raise our vibration wherever possible. The moral of the story is…follow what feels good as much as you can! We hope you find this helpful. Enjoy! Thursday Thoughts - Habits

Send us Fan Mail On today's Thursday Thoughts, Polly & I are talking all about habits. We discuss some of the ways to start cultivating a habit, such as making it easy and making it obvious. We also talk about the importance of knowing your 'why' when it comes to starting (or kicking) a habit, as well as getting back up when we inevitably fall off the wagon. Finally, we briefly touch on bad habits, and how we can start to eliminate them. We hope you'll find something useful in here! The One Where I Talk To Literary Agent, Rachel Mills

Send us Fan Mail In this week’s episode, I’m talking to the wonderful Rachel Mills. Rachel is the founder of Rachel Mills Literary, a modern London-based literary agency representing a community of prize-winning and internationally bestselling authors. Rachel previously worked as Literary Agent at Furniss Lawton agency, within the James Grant Talent Group, and before that as Agent and International Business Director for Peters Fraser and Dunlop agency, where she was a member of the Executive Board. Prior to that she worked in publishing at Penguin and Random House. In the 20 years she has worked in the industry, Rachel has secured major publishing and screen deals for a diverse range of authors. Her clients include bestselling authors like Sam Baker, Nuno Mendes and Catherine Gray. In 2015 she was awarded The Bookseller Rights Professional of the Year Award and in 2011 was nominated a ‘Rising Star’ by The Bookseller magazine. Rachel lives in London and is happily childfree. Topics that Rachel & I cover are: Rachel’s experience of setting up her own literary agency; the trials and tribulations of running a small business, but how it’s worth the hard work; how the publishing industry has changed dramatically over the last century, and the role of an agent involves; how, when it comes to not having kids, it’s so strange that people feel compelled to ask women about something they haven’t done; how Rachel never entertained the thought of having kids; how most of her friends are childfree, and how that can make a big difference in terms of how you feel about it; the many, many different paths in life that make the ‘regret question’ pointless; the hedonic treadmill, and how happiness has to be found in the present moment; the myth that childfree women are heartless career women, without a maternal bone in their bodies; how there are many other ways to care for and nurture other people, than having your own children; how the misconception that childless women cannot be fulfilled is actually offensive to women with kids; the importance of slowing down and being present when it comes to creativity; the drudgery of being a parent; how infuriating it can be when people imply you’ve never known real love of you haven’t had kids; how important it is to find your tribe; some of the books that Rachel is currently loving. Minisode Ep.108 - My Best Advice

Send us Fan Mail On today's minisode, I'm sharing the best advice I can give to any single, childless woman. The long and short of it is that we're best served when we look inside of ourselves for the solutions to our problems. And while it might feel like the answers lie in something outside of ourselves, i.e. a boyfriend / girlfriend, or a baby, this isn't actually the case. Press 'Play' and let me know what you think!
