Thinking Through the Darkness A LoreBySpec Companion Podcast

Not every theory arrives fully formed.

Thinking Through the Darkness is the space between the idea and the script — where the lore gets poked at, the holes get found, and the thinking happens out loud. No polish. No finished arguments. Just Kingdom Hearts, a microphone, and wherever the thread leads.

New episodes drop on YouTube.

A LoreBySpec production.

    The Kairi Episode

Kairi might be the single most under-explained major character in Kingdom Hearts, so this episode works through every unanswered question about her from that running noticeboard of Kingdom Hearts mysteries — and the deeper we go, the stranger she gets. I start with the thing I actually believe about Kairi going forward: her story isn’t going to move forward so much as backward. She’s a character built almost entirely out of blanks — no backstory, no memory, no explanation of who raised her on Destiny Islands after Apprentice Xehanort sent her back in time — and I think the next arc uses her as the mechanism to fill those blanks in. From there we get into the genuinely unanswerable stuff. Why Kairi has a Nobody in Naminé but has never once produced a pure-blood Heartless, despite dying more than once. Why her Keyblade “bequeathing” makes no consistent sense — if brushing against Aqua’s Keyblade counts, Jack Sparrow should have one too. How she stays fully formed in Kingdom Hearts III when everyone else has to be rebuilt, how she traverses darkness that tears other people apart, and the timeline knot of her helping Sora into the light while also being shattered and reassembled elsewhere. Then the hot takes. Why I think the New Seven Hearts added nothing to Kingdom Hearts III and quietly devalued the original Princesses. Why I’ve landed on a running theory that the Kairi we know is a replica — not one of Vexen’s, something older, from a creator we haven’t met — and where that leads when you put it next to Subject X, the Chirithy ears on her costume, and Xehanort insisting the two of them are “one and the same.” I bring Final Fantasy VII into it. I will probably be nuked from orbit for it. And because I couldn’t help myself, I pause the recording mid-episode to pull up the Kingdom Hearts III ending in 1080p and settle the paopu question once and for all — did anyone actually take a bite? What I found changed how I read the whole scene, including the fact that Sora very clearly does not want to make that vow. Plus: why Kingdom Hearts II Kairi and Kingdom Hearts III Kairi feel like two completely different people, and why I think that’s on purpose. This is pre-production thinking from the podcast side, so it’s loose and it’s where the theories get stress-tested before they become videos. If one of these questions has an answer I’ve missed, I want to hear it. The Sora Questions (Part 2)

The Sora questions continue. In Part 2 of this run through Kingdom Hearts' biggest unanswered questions, I'm back on the Sora row of that Trello-meets-noticeboard of every mystery the series has never bothered to close — and this batch digs into some of the weirdest, most overlooked corners of Sora's story across Dream Drop Distance, Coded, Kingdom Hearts III, Re:Mind and Melody of Memory. Why do Sora and Riku revert to their younger selves the moment they enter the Realm of Sleep — and why does the same thing quietly happen in Coded? I get into the idea of a "revision point," an origin state the series keeps pulling them back to, and what that has to do with light being born in the hearts of children. Who actually made the Dream Drop Distance outfits? It sounds like a throwaway until you realise the games never explain who dresses any of these characters — and why the Mark of Mastery exam, the fairies and Yen Sid might be the closest thing to an answer we've got. Then the big one: did Sora really possess Kairi in Melody of Memory? I don't think "possess" is the right word at all. I walk through why this reads as Sora's will — a lingering-will-style projection — rather than Sora's heart hopping into Kairi's body, why it matters that he never speaks, why Xehanort telling us his heart couldn't reach them is the whole clue, and why I think Kairi had that fight won on her own anyway. Plus the paopu rule as the actual mechanism tying them together, and where Naminé's push/pull fits in. And to close the row, Data Sora: why he glares at everyone like they owe him money. Spoiler — it's not a glitch in the connection, it's that Data Sora was never the Sora you think he is. This is pre-production chatter from the podcast side, so it's loose, it's exploratory, and some of it will absolutely end up as full theory videos down the line. If one of these questions has an answer I've missed — or you reckon I've called one wrong — tell me in the comments. That's half the reason I do these out loud. New here, or missed the start? Part 1 of the Sora questions is on the channel — that's where the row begins. — — — This has been LoreBySpec. If this got your brain working, please like, comment, and subscribe — it genuinely helps more than you'd think. The Sora Questions (Part 1)

We've got a Discord now — and someone in it pointed me at a site that's basically what you'd get if Trello and a noticeboard had a baby, stuffed with every unanswered question in Kingdom Hearts. So I'm working through the Sora row, one sticky note at a time. This is part one. I get into: who or what actually decided Sora's fate, and why nobody ever talks about the crown; why he crystallises like a Final Fantasy XIII l'Cie when Yozora beats him, and what that implies he "completed"; whether Sora even has a heart in the same way, given Ven took refuge in him before he was fully formed; whether he's dead, erased, missing or displaced; why he's still not considered a Keyblade Master, and how the Character Files quietly retconned what "Master" even means; and the big one — what law did Sora actually break with the Power of Waking, because the more I look at it (and at what Chirithy does and doesn't know), the less convinced I am he broke anything at all. Plus quickfire takes on the dual-wielding question, the Remind fade, the Yozora clothes in Toy Box, the Pirates underwater thing, and more. Roughly an hour of it, and we're only through the first row — more next episode. What Pokémon Gave Me

Pokémon was the first video game that ever made me cry — and not for any reason the games were trying to. It was one screen in Crystal: are you a boy or a girl? And it was the first time in my small, very gendered childhood that anyone had ever asked me who I was instead of telling me. This one's personal. I talk about why Crystal has stayed one of the most important games I've ever played — not just that it let me choose, but that whatever I chose changed nothing; I'd still become champion, I'd still matter — and about the thing Pokémon does that almost no other world does: it trusts the kid in the room, hands a ten-year-old their own path, and makes the villains the adults, every time. Then, because I've reviewed and written guides for these games for money, I get into the messier modern stuff too: why Let's Go is underrated, why the Sword and Shield graphics discourse missed the point, why Scarlet and Violet is my favourite modern entry despite needing another year in the oven, why ZA lost its soul, and whether we've simply got too many legendaries now. But underneath all of it, this is about the first place that ever handed me my own life and said: it's yours, whoever you are. You should play? Disco Elysium

⚠️ Content warning: this video discusses addiction, mental health, psychosis, and suicidal ideation, and contains some strong language. Please take care of yourself. I can't recommend Disco Elysium — and that's not because it's bad. It's a masterpiece. It's because recommending it means assuming an enormous amount about the person I'm handing it to, and if I'm wrong, this game teaches the opposite of what it means to. In this one I get into why: the media-literacy problem (a game about nuance can't hand you nuance you don't already have), the sheer density of it, what it's actually saying about who society fails and why, and the personal reason I can't look away from it — as someone with schizoaffective disorder, Harry's chorus of inner voices is one of the most accurate depictions of that experience I've encountered. Plus the clearest way I know to explain what the game demands of you, via Caesar's Legion in New Vegas. This isn't a "you should play." It's a "should you? — and here's what you'd be signing up for." If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out to someone you trust or a local support line. ✧ Subscribe for Kingdom Hearts deep dives and the occasional game essay ✧ The longer podcast version is on Thinking Through the Darkness, wherever you get podcasts ✧ Support the channel: https://ko-fi.com/iamspecious ✧ Catch me live: https://twitch.tv/iamspecious #DiscoElysium #YouShouldPlay #GameEssay

    When Languages Merge

Episode 25, and a heads-up: my podcast software lost a few episodes, so things have shuffled around — the Latin lexicon videos this references may land in a different order than you'd expect. This one starts with a great video by iAyeCaptainKai on how far the community has cracked the Scala/Caelum language, and one detail that stopped me cold: Quadratum and Twilight Town apparently share a lexicon. Two places don't just happen to speak the same language without something underneath it. So I follow that thread into two tangles. First: Ansem the Wise. Sora broke one rule with the Power of Waking and got erased — so how does Ansem fabricate a digital world and move people's hearts into it and pay nothing? Where did that knowledge come from, why does the series never explain his obsession, why is Mickey fine with it, and why is Radiant Garden a medieval town sitting on matter-generating, world-digitising tech that doesn't belong to its own world? Second: Twilight Town itself, and why it gets away with everything — a Demon Tide nobody reacts to, an unguarded Haunted Mansion, and why it survived into KH3 when Radiant Garden got cut. Both roads lead back to Quadratum, and to the same question I keep circling: what's real here, and what's been manufactured? Also: my friend Steve from QuestAcceptedDnD (@questaccepteddnd) is coming on the podcast around October — go follow them, they're friends of the channel and you'll usually find me in their chat. The Photorealism Is a Lore Statement, Not a Style Choice

Episode 24 and I'm not doing a leak reaction. A lot of people wanted me to farm the Missing-Link material for exposure and I'd rather not — it's stolen, it's not currently in use, and lore-wise it changes nothing. What it did do is confirm the thing I already wanted to talk about: the photorealism in the KH4 trailers isn't a stylistic choice. It's a lore statement. In this episode I work through why Sora and Sigurd keep their cartoon shaders while Quadratum's civilians are greyscale and business-casual, why Sora looks progressively more human the longer he's there — and how that connects to the world-appropriate forms Donald has been magically maintaining for three people across an entire series, which is an insane amount of unacknowledged labour when you actually count it. Then the harder questions: if Sora's proportions physically changed, that hurts — how do you learn to walk again in seven days? And if World Order still applies, then everyone who's entered Quadratum is an unnatural predator in someone else's ecosystem, with nothing masking them. Plus what that means for which Disney worlds can even exist on this side, and why Pirates of the Caribbean breaks the rule before we start.

You Should Play Doom & Age of Empires

Episode 23 and this one's different. No theory — just the two games that made me. When I think about the games that matter to me, they're always about other people, and these two are about my dad, who I lost to a heart attack over ten years ago. Doom is my whole family on the weekend, cousins and fathers trading high scores, me on his lap pointing out the blue doors, and the day I cracked the cheat codes and he looked at me like I was a prophet. Age of Empires is where I got my love of history — Joan of Arc, the Maid of Orleans, a voice I can still hear decades later — and the reason I care about stories and analysis at all. I talk about being an ADHD kid in the '90s before anyone had the words for it, the Man in the River scenario that still gives me nightmares, and the strange difficulty of describing the games that gave you your start — because how do you review the thing that's woven into who you are? These games are bittersweet now. They're also fundamentally me. Yozora Was Never in Charge

Episode 22 and I've been going back through every Yozora scene we have — all fourteen generous minutes of them — and the conclusion I keep landing on is that Yozora is a tool. A commander who meets someone who doesn't match his description and attacks anyway isn't commanding anything; that's enforcer behaviour. In this episode I work through the Nameless Star's claim that his heart has been replaced, why "unreality" is starting to look like a label rather than a description when Quadratum keeps running Reality's mechanics, and the red-and-blue heterochromia as 3D-glasses lenses — the ability to see and swap between planes. Then the big one: I don't think we labelled the right Re:Mind ending "good." Yozora dissolving into light reads as a being of lux, Sora crystallising reads as the stasis that actually ports him to Quadratum, and Luxord's car commentary — or pointed silence — splits the two endings into two very different arrivals. Plus the sleep count in KH4's marketing, why commander isn't even the top of the chain, the rook-not-queen problem, and whether Riku turning up ruins a solo Sora story — or whether Sora was only ever the bait to catch Riku. Who is the Lost Masters

Episode 21 and it's not the Lost Masters arc. It's the Lost Master arc. Singular. No S. And once you notice that, the whole question changes. In this episode I break the phrase down into its parts: what "lost" actually requires — you can't lose something you never had, so this is someone we've already met; why deaths in Union Cross might not count when Daybreak Town was a simulation restarted over and over to draw something out; why the Keyblade Graveyard having its name before the first Keyblade War we ever see is a chicken-and-egg problem the Hollow Bastion precedent makes worse; and why Ava — the obvious answer, the Master even Luxu shrugs about — has a form-mimicking ability that means she may not be absent at all. Then it gets philosophical: reformed selves aren't the same people, you don't step in the same river twice, "lost" is a moral declaration as often as a physical state — and the black sheep of this whole saga might be Xehanort himself. And underneath all of it, the possibility I can't shake: the Lost Master might not be a person at all. Why Sora Has an Apartment

Episode 20 and something's been pinging around in my head since the new KH4 trailer: Quadratum has no colour. Strelitzia is black and white. Sora is red and black. Luxord, black. Sigurd gets purple — and black. The city is greys and whites outside the advertising, the NPCs all dress business casual, and there are no kids, no animals, no hospitals, no schools, no parks — none of the life a city is supposed to contain. In this episode I think through the apartment that nobody seems to live in and why it matches neither Strelitzia's personality nor any real depiction of a Japanese home, why people who fear being swept up again don't decorate, the cog-in-the-machine reading where it doesn't matter that it's Sora — just what makes Sora useful, and how every other dark place in this series — San Fransokyo, The World That Never Was, Twilight Town — still had lights, trash cans, and personality. It's like somebody turned down the saturation in Quadratum. And right now, I'm leaning towards: very intentional. I Said Quadratum Was a Prison. The Trailer Answered.

Episode 19 and a while ago I said Quadratum was a prison — and the trailer, rather than correcting me, answered. In this episode I walk back through the theory against the new footage: why Traverse Town appears for people in need of refuge while Quadratum collects people who shouldn't be there at all, the FNAF 6 parallel of everyone being summoned into one labyrinth, the narrator's strange declaration that darkness had no concept there before it came with us, the Darkside whose Quadratum form is all wires and sinew and data-cable tendons, the Darknesses that turn out to be hollow shells and marionette approximations, and why a city — familiar, rote, day-in-day-out — is exactly what you'd build if you wanted a trap nobody checks the walls of. Plus the freeze-frame of Sigurd smiling next to a Darkside he clearly doesn't consider a threat, and what the people in the know might already understand about moving in and out. It might not be so hypothetical anymore. Strelitzia Is Alive — And It Breaks Everything

Episode 18 and Strelitzia is alive — which, by Kingdom Hearts' own rules, should be impossible. The first KH4 trailer told us Quadratum is an afterworld beyond the Final World, the place you reach once you've made peace. But Strelitzia died violently, unseen, and completely unresolved — the exact profile of the hearts we meet clinging to the Final World over far less. So in this episode I think through why she's there at all: why Quadratum is starting to look less like a new life and more like limbo, the pattern of who's being gathered there and why none of them should be, what "Lost Master" might actually be referring to now that the definition of a Master has quietly changed, and why the Master of Masters — a man who picks nobody idly — choosing Strelitzia has red flags all over it. Not everything with Strelitzia is as it seems. Books of Prophecy — The Winnie the Pooh Episode

Episode 18 and we're talking about Winnie the Pooh. Stay with me. Because the comments on the Maleficent theory kept circling back to Books of Prophecy and what could be in Luxu's box — and that means I finally get to dig into one of my favourite underexplored topics in this entire franchise. I think Pooh's book has been quietly demonstrating how Books of Prophecy work since Kingdom Hearts 1, and almost nobody has clocked it. In this episode I go through the strange treatment of Pooh's book across all three numbered games — the secrecy in KH1, the shift to a memory-based injury in KH2, and the genuinely odd hand-waviness from Merlin in KH3 that doesn't track with his character at all. I also dig into why Pooh's book has always required a specific, non-negotiable access mechanism — you have to go through Merlin, every time — and why I think that's our first real demonstration of what diving into a Book of Prophecy actually looks like. I ask whether Jiminy's Journal itself counts as a Book of Prophecy, given that it authors fixed-outcome events, and draw a direct parallel between the digitisation of Daybreak Town in Union Cross and what Mickey and the gang do in Coded. And I end with the box. What's actually in it, why it's always depicted as heavy in a universe full of magic, and why Pete and Maleficent literally digging up Pandora's Box in Thebes without realising what they're holding might be one of the funniest details in the entire series. Who is the Strongest Darkness?

Episode 8 and we're doing something a little different today. No theory dissection. No character files. No paradoxes. Just me talking about what I actually want Kingdom Hearts 4 to be. And I think some of it is going to surprise you. I want the series to slow down. I want Sora to lose access to his Keyblade and have to figure out who he is without it. I want a Persona-style daily life arc in Quadratum — a job, an apartment with Strelitzia, a day and night cycle, flashbacks to his adventures triggered by a duck in a park. I want him to sit with the isolation he has never once been allowed to sit with in fifteen years of adventuring. And I want the moment where Riku finally finds a way to bring him home — and Sora says no. In this episode I also dig into why the Foretellers make more sense as individual antagonists for each game in the arc than any single villain, why Xehanort's role in Kingdom Hearts 4 should be that of a witness rather than a participant, why Naminé deserves a Keyblade and Kairi deserves her own Drive Forms, and why the Ven and Strelitzia situation needs to be addressed — even if only in a single scene that only the people who know will understand. This is the Kingdom Hearts 4 I want. Let me know if you want the same. If you enjoy the podcast, following, leaving a review and dropping a comment genuinely helps it reach more people. Could Ventus have been a Princess of Heart?

Welcome back to Thinking Through the Darkness, a Lore by Spec podcast. In this episode, we unpack one of the more bizarre unanswered questions in Kingdom Hearts lore: why Ventus seemingly meets the criteria for being a Princess of Heart… yet isn’t one. We discuss: The lore inconsistencies surrounding the Princesses of Heart The New Seven Hearts in Kingdom Hearts III Why Ven’s separation from darkness complicates the rules Elsa and Rapunzel’s inclusion compared to earlier princesses Whether purity/light is even being consistently defined anymore How KH3 handled its Disney worlds and narrative integration The possibility that gender itself is part of the rule system This is a very theory-heavy and speculative episode focused on trying to understand the internal logic of the series and where Kingdom Hearts’ mythology starts becoming messy. Did Roxas, Xion and Lea Need To Be In Kingdom Hearts 3?

Episode 12 and we're having a conversation that a lot of people probably aren't going to be thrilled about. Tetsuya Nomura and Kou have said that there were initially no plans for Roxas, Xion and Lea to be in Kingdom Hearts 3. Their stories were concluded in 2. It was fan demand that brought them back. And I think — looking back on it — Nomura was right. In this episode I dig into whether the Twilight Town trio's presence in KH3 actually adds anything narratively, or whether it's emotionally satisfying fan service that the story had to bend itself around. I look at what Roxas, Xion and Lea each actually do in KH3 beyond the Keyblade Graveyard sequence — and whether any of their returns meaningfully change the outcome of the story. But the deeper problem I keep coming back to is this: by giving Nobodies permanent vessels, Kingdom Hearts 3 opens a can of worms it has never properly closed. What happens when Sora dies in Kingdom Hearts 4 in Quadratum? Does Roxas get yeeted from his vessel? Does Sora develop a new Nobody? If a Nobody in a vessel can be overtaken by someone else — as the Riku Replica situation implies — are they really a full person? Or are they just piloting a body that was never truly theirs? The whole point of the Nobody arc was that some things can't be neatly resolved. That there are always going to be people in the margins. And giving Roxas, Xion and Naminé vessels removes that entire argument. I also get into the Foreteller body hopping problem, why the confusing argument for not including them doesn't hold up when Xion herself would have been equally confusing to anyone who had only played the numbered entries, and who might have taken their place if the original plan had held. We're not done asking uncomfortable questions here. If you enjoy the podcast, following, leaving a review and dropping a comment genuinely helps it reach more people. Final Fantasy 15 and What It Taught Me About Friendship

Episode 11 and we're getting personal. Final Fantasy 15 is one of my top three games of all time. And I know what some of you are thinking. I know. In this episode I make the case for why Final Fantasy 15 is not only a brilliant game but an important one — specifically for men. Because underneath the road trip and the royal destiny and the Ardyn problem, Final Fantasy 15 is fundamentally a story about what healthy masculine friendship actually looks like. And I think that's rarer than it should be. I talk about where 15 gets it right — the brotherhood, the camaraderie, the way each of the boys respects the others without it ever needing to be stated. The way Gladiolus can walk away and come back and the group just absorbs it. The way Ignis losing his sight doesn't make him lesser in their eyes. The way Prompto exists as proof that levity and love are worth protecting. I also talk about where 15 gets it wrong — specifically the rushed final third, the missed opportunity of the time skip reunion, and why we deserved a proper sit rep with Noctis as king before the final battle. And I talk about the guy at the PS5 counter who called Final Fantasy 15 gay because four guys go on a road trip together. And my response to that. I also get into FF7 Remake — and why splitting one game into three parts is a mistake that Final Fantasy 15, to its credit, never made. And I end with something personal. Final Fantasy 15 arrived when I needed it most. Shortly after my dad died. And I'm still waiting to find my village.
