Where you can hear the true stories of flight attendants, pilots and their passengers, wrapped up nicely in a fictional style free audiobook. Fight or Flight

A violent hijacking by a crew member causes the pilots to fight back for their lives. In 1994, a disgruntled employee called Auburn Calloway was facing disciplinary action for lying about his flying hours. He decided to take matters into his own hands and give his children the Fed Ex life insurance money by attempting the unthinkable. He hid weapons in his carry on baggage, had unrestricted access to the cockpit and tried to murder all three flight crew after take off. His plan was to crash the aircraft and make it all look like an accident. The courageous crew fought back, attempting extreme aerial maneuvers, including almost rolling the DC-10 plane upside down at 140 degrees, and performing dives to disarm and subdue Calloway. Captain David G. Sanders, First Officer James M. Tucker Jr and Flight Engineer Andrew H. Peterson were true heroes. Fighting to the end despite their horrific injuries that cost them their careers. Hear their story, told as a short audio story on The Red Eye podcast. Where true aviation events are told in a fictional style. Because sometimes, the unbelievable needs to be told in a way we can believe! The Layover Lie

Would you ever lie to give yourself more time in a destination? In the aviation world, we've had plenty of crew who will go sick downroute so they don't have to work home - they get the name One Sector Sally (a cabin crew member who gets the reputation of only working one sector). I guess a flight attendant might do that for myriad reasons. They hate their job, they have stuff going on at home, or maybe they meet the most amazing guy at their destination and don't want that magic to end? That's exactly what happened to the donor of our latest story. She met an incredible man in Cape Town, and had to make a choice about leaving him or leaving her crew a man down! Listen to this true story, told in the style of a fabulous beach read audiobook, on The Red Eye podcast. Where you hear the true stories of the crazy lives of cabin crew. Fire on Final Approach

A major lithium battery fire occurred in an overhead locker on a Virgin Australia Boeing 737 flight from Sydney to Hobart on July 21st, 2025. Whilst preparing the cabin for landing, the cabin crew were alerted to smoke, and the sounds of pops and hisses. A lithium battery fire is a cabin crew's worst nightmare. Because once one cell ignites, you risk something called Thermal Runaway, where the adjacent cells begin to overheat and ignite as well - causing the fire to spread quickly and uncontrollably. The key is too cool it down fast. But what if the lithium battery is hard to locate? And what if the aircraft is rapidly coming into land? In this true story, we hear about how the crew acted fast, and used both their extensive training, and their ability to think outside the box to save lives. Send us a text! Stuck Up a Mountain

Going off on adventures whilst on a layover is a perk of the job as a member of flight crew. Hiking in far away places, taking in vistas you'd never normally see, or maybe skiing up in Big Bear in California... On today's episode of The Red Eye podcast, we hear the true story of a cabin crew member who took the opportunity to ski with the rest of the crew - only to risk not making it back in time to operate the flight home, and possibly leaving hundreds of passengers stranded. It helps us pass the time away through long flights or multiple sectors. You could have been awarded the Best on Board prize without even knowing it! Untrained for the Unexpected

Have you ever had to deal with something you're absolutely not trained for? When you're 38,000ft in the air, the cabin crew member is the one person everyone turns to to deal with an issue. Most of the time we're trained for it! Fire in the cabin? We trained for that! Violent passenger? We trained for that! Medical emergency? We trained for that! Mental health emergency? Oh boy... not really trained for that! People from all walks of life board that plane, so once in a while the crew are expected to deal with a situation that they're not fully trained for. But as they are usually the type of person who just wants to help, no matter what, they will jump on in and hope they do the right thing. In today's episode of The Red Eye podcast, we tell the stories of the true events that happened to our host and producer, Ally. Who happened to be the person left to deal with 2 separate mental health crises, and wasn't the type of person who would turn her back just because they aren't completely sure what to do. The Original Ash Cloud Story

When European airspace shut down in April 2010, the aviation industry largely just accepted it because standard procedures told us that is what happens when a volcano erupts and spits ash into the air. Planes can't fly through ash. Of course! But, like most Standard Operating Procedures in the airline industry, there was an incident that occured that showed us why we need that procedure in place. Well, back in 1982, British Airways Flight 9 from Kuala Lumpur to Perth got caught out when the Mount Galunggung volcano in Indonesia erupted, spewing ash into the air. But no one had experienced the effects of volcanic ash in jet engines - and we learnt pretty swiftly that it was not good. All four engines stopped, effectively turning the Boeing 747 into a glider. Thankfully, the pilots and engineers skills, training and persistence in the face of danger meant that once the aircraft had descended to 12,000ft they were able to restart the engines and land with 3 working ones. After a few days of investgation it was determined that the the tips of the turbine blades had been ground away by the volcanic ash, that had clogged the engines at 37,000ft and had only restarted when enough of the molten ash solidified and broke off at the lower level. In today's episode of The Red Eye podcast, we tell this story from the point of view of the pilots, crew and passengers, in this 30 minute audiobook style story, based on the true events of the Original Ash Cloud incident.
