    You're Never Out - The Sting (1973)

Our next LIVES OF CRIME block is all about heists and the big personalities behind them. We’re calling it “YOU’RE NEVER OUT” and we’re long overdue to get to this seminal hit film from the 1970s that won Best Picture and more at the Academy Awards. We’re talkin’ THE STING from 1973. It’s hijinks and capers and rag time as Johnny Hooker (Robert Redford, RIP) and Henry Gondorf (Paul Newman, RIP) team up with a surprising amount of people to score big time off of the gangster boss Doyle Lonnegan (Robert Shaw, RIP). Misdirects and danger aplenty but also so whimsical that it stands out from the any of our noir film discussions. Half of Chicago had to be in on this scam. Everybody probably got $100 bucks and a bag of popcorn after the money was all divided up. Lives of Crime - The Asphalt Jungle (1950)

We may have bitten off more than we can chew for what we hoped to complete by the end of the year but we’re finally back to a rotating theme that will likely encompass 2027 as well. Once again it’s time for our “LIVES OF CRIME” series and we’ve been hankerin’ since we did the James Cagney block and are finally able to get back into it. For this chunk’s crime theme we’re gonna need a few decent heavies. Preferably ones we can trust, which are non existent. We’re talking about HEIST MOVIES for this LIVES OF CRIMES five movie collection that we’re calling “YOU’RE NEVER OUT” because you’re never out. Once a crook always a crook. We kick it off with comfortable territory with a nice piece of classic film noir directed by John Huston who had already well made his bones in Hollywood. We’re talkin’ “THE ASPHALT JUNGLE” from 1950 starring Sterling Hayden, Sam Jaffe and a fresh faced upcoming starlet by the name of Marilyn Monroe. Crackers, crooks, crooked cops and little bit of good old fashioned, All-American copaganda. Seek it out and then hear us out. Get the job done. New Stuff - Masters of the Universe (2026)

We wrap up our NEW STUFF SHOWCASE with the only movie in the bunch that didn’t hit that box office mark. We don’t mean to rub it in but maybe 80’s nostalgia has its ceiling. We caught MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE on a freshly dropped stream just six weeks after its theatrical release. Mattel cashed in huge with Barbie so now Prince Adam gets the treatment. In fact, they stick him in a soul sucking HR job daydreaming about some insane fantasy land from his childhood. Sound familiar? That’s you, man. He’s you. You fucking loved He-Man so much and you used to play with the toys and pretended you were kicking it with Man-At-Arms, fighting Beast Man and making out with Orko. But here you are at your humdrum job with nothing left but cartoon landscapes in your mind. Can’t afford a house despite making 3x what your parents made growing up. How is this shitty burger twenty-five bucks? Straight of Hormuz? How about sending me to the Straight of He-Manz over in Eternia so I can get away from this dipshit life. Goddammit just let me be a Smurf, a Snork, a Gummy bear…ANYTHING! HELP ME! New Stuff - Backrooms (2026)

We continue NEW STUFF SHOWCASE with yet another breakout horror that made box office bank and it’s directed by a surprisingly young breakout director, Kane Parsons. We’re talking BACKROOMS which we saw in the theater but, admittedly, we knew nothing about the YouTube series that it came out of or the creepypasta lore that inspired that. How do you even find anything good with Creepypasta? There’s so much slop. Anyway, there’s a lot to compliment in young Kane Parsons debut feature film and some performances worth checking out. What would your backrooms look like? What would you leave behind and who else would you find? If we find your mother in there then we’re hooking up. I just want to be up front about that right now. New Stuff - Project Hail Mary (2026)

We’re going through a NEW STUFF SHOWCASE and finally hitting up some fairly recent releases and this hit charmed the britches off of audiences when it released in theaters a few months ago. America’s Official Quirky Hunk and Modern Nice Guy Everyman, Ryan Gosling, stars in one of this year’s biggest hits, “PROJECT HAIL MARY”. Ryan plays Dr. Grace a middle school science teacher who has to go light years into space to figure out why the sun is dying. He’s not expected to come back alive but when he encounters sentient extraterrestrial life then anything becomes possible. Grace and the alien must be really cute together until they can finally solve the mystery of the Astrophage. We’re nice and loose in this no notes discussion of a movie we’ve yet to hear anyone shit on. It’s the Little Rock guy. Rocky. Everyone loves him. Cuter than Baby Yoda IMO. He should co-host the next Academy Awards with Baby Yoda. You know that would be a monster ratings draw. Get it done, Academy. I just gave you money for free. New Stuff - Obsession (2025)

A lot of this month will be devoted to recent releases. It’s NEW STUFF SHOWCASE and no movie this year will be a bigger surprise phenomenon than the movie we’re discussing today. Curry Barker’s monster hit “Obsession”. It seems like making horror is the best approach to breaking out in this challenging business of making movies. Curry Parker, Ari Aster a decade ago, Adrian Chiarella and Kane Parsons also this year as well as Zach Cregger with “Barbarian” and “Weapons”. All fine and good but can we go see other things beyond horror too? I need a Kramer vs. Kramer prequel directed by Osgood Perkins. THIS NO NOTES DISCUSSION OF “OBSESSION” IS ALL BABY NEEDS! Is it awesome or overrated? We got some mixed feelings on it but there’s plenty to praise and a lot of disturbing things to ponder so hear our opinion and tell us what you think in the comments. New Stuff - The Odyssey (2026)

We’ve been behind on the hot new movies that have been coming out this year so we did a little cinema/streaming grind and hit up five fresh flicks. We’re calling this series NEW STUFF SHOWCASE and we’re discussing them in the order of maximum profit first. That said, The Odyssey is still selling tickets and packing the IMAX going into week four so it looks like the Nolan epic might become a certified “Billy” (billion at the box office) so THE ODYSSEY is first! The hottest cake on the griddle! NO NOTES FOR THIS DISCUSSION! 100% GUARANTEED TO BE MORE MEANDERING THAN EVER! How did we like Christopher Nolan’s adaptation? Did Matt Damon bring it? Did the effects go hard? How delicious is the Cyclops cheese? How close is too close at an IMAX screening? Do the Sirens at least make you cum first before they eat you? Are the sobbing reactionary hordes onto something? Of course not. It’s all about having a good time at the movies so hit play and let us set the record straight. Movies are Gay 4: Leviticus (2026)

We close out MOVIES ARE GAY 4: GAY THE 4TH BE WITH YOU with a fresh film that was just in theaters. A sleeper little Australian horror in the wake of “Obsession” and “Backrooms” hype and this one has some decent reviews under its belt. Not too shabby for a director’s first feature length film. Small town Australia is a lot like a lot of small towns everywhere in it’s closed mindedness and this particular slice of post-industrial Aussie hell has a cult that will curse you if you go out and do the perfectly natural act of kissing other guys. We’re talking about the new movie “LEVITICUS” and maybe you know that Old Testament passage? Naim and Ryan are attempting to navigate the end of their adolescence in a shithole where they are then made to fear each other as they might be killed by what they desire. What will it take to overcome this killer force set upon them by their own community? I’ll give you a hint. It rhymes with “shove”. That and hooking up on a bus. Where the cum go? Movies are Gay 4: Bottoms (2023)

We’re on our penultimate selection for this year’s belated “MOVIES ARE GAY 4: GAY THE 4TH BE WITH YOU” and we’re hitting up a refreshing raunchy teen comedy about a couple of loser lesbians. Not to be confused with the cool, hot, gays. These girls want hot chicks so bad that they’ll lie and start clubs to get anywhere near a cheerleader but Jeff, Phunck & the rest of the high school football team prefer to have the attention on them as the upcoming murder spree with a rival school is just around the corner. We can’t believe we missed “Bottoms” when it came to theaters in 2023 but we hit up this fun comedy today so hear us out. I bet if they called it “PJ and Josie Want Some Pussy” it would have made $100 million. Movies are Gay 4: The People's Joker (2022)

We continue with YOUR demands as we make July as gay as June with our theme, MOVIES ARE GAY 4: GAY THE 4TH BE WITH YOU, and we’re presenting them in the classic individual style. This week is a remarkably crafty and genuinely funny story of a transgender woman that is told using (in very particular parodic ways) characters from Batman comics and shows as well as other DC comics characters as inspiration. Superhero fatigue (and Joker fatigue in particular) may have been the reason we’re just now getting to this unique comedy but it’s easily the best Joker movie that exists. Better than most Batman movies. At least on par with Mask of the Phantasm. It’s satirical, it’s subversive, It’s an inspired collage of pop culture iconography and most important of all…it’s gay. Or “queer” if you prefer. Excellent work reclaiming that one guys. Well done. Movies are Gay 4: Carol (2015)

MOVIES ARE GAY 4: GAY THE 4TH BE WITH YOU (and also with you). We're starting strong with our return to form as we gay up July to compensate for being too busy last June. The rest of our Gay selections are thoroughly in the 21st century and we take on our first Todd Haynes film discussion in the movie "Carol", which is a lesbian love story and also one of two films where Cate Blanchett plays a strong lesbian in a movie directed by a guy named "Todd". Carol is a pretty simple film that plays a lot of its emotion quietly. Like how they did in 1952. Hear us tell it.
