Wells Fargo: 3,097 Gone. Are You Safe in 2027?
Wells Fargo layoffs 2026: 3,097 fewer employees in Q3, $5.95 billion in quarterly profit and a staffing warning for 2027. Who does the work when thousands leave and management keeps demanding more efficiency? Wells Fargo's October 13, 2026 earnings results show 194,369 employees at September 30, down from 197,466 in June. Headcount fell by 10,829 since December 2025 and 16,452 from a year earlier. These are net workforce reductions, combining hiring and departures; they do not establish how many employees were laid off. Revenue reached $21.87 billion and net income was $5.951 billion, both higher than a year earlier. The business keeps making billions while the workforce keeps shrinking. WHAT WELLS FARGO SAID ABOUT 2027 CFO Mike Santomassimo said, “we expect every part of the company to drive meaningful efficiency,” while discussing next year's budget. CEO Charlie Scharf described AI agents capable of performing work in call centers and operations sites across the bank. Our analysis: the next threat is how those expectations reach your department's staffing plan. Management has not announced a specific 2027 layoff total in these remarks. Scharf discussed AI uses in software development, marketing, cybersecurity, risk management, customer service, underwriting and routine financial advisor work. These are automation priorities, not a confirmed layoff list. Selected hiring continues. This episode advances The Grind Hotline's Wells Fargo coverage from repeated headcount reductions and September's AI warning to the pressure facing employees who remain. The quarterly decline has slowed. The shrinking workforce continues. Who absorbs the work? The earnings materials do not account for every departing employee's workload. Watch for unfilled vacancies, combined responsibilities and output targets that assume AI has already saved time. Surviving this quarter does not settle next year's staffing question.
