It unpacks the fear many dentists feel around endodontics, the pressure of treating patients in pain and the emotional responsibility that comes with making clinical decisions under uncertainty. ADSA 2026 Mini Series: What actually separates an ambitious young dentist from a clinician who can be trusted with difficult cases? With Dr David Attia

Hosted by Dr Michael Shambira and Ahmed Issa In this ADSA Convention conversation, Ahmed Issa & Dr Mike Shambira sit down with Dr David Attia to explore the parts of clinical development that are much harder to see from the outside. David reflects on repeatedly struggling in simulation lab as a student, the expectations young dentists place on themselves after graduation, and why attitude, preparation and the ability to accept feedback often matter more than appearing naturally talented. They also discuss mentorship, case selection, clinical mistakes, complications, ambition and the maturity required to recognise when a case should not be yours. Rather than an implant lecture, this is a conversation about the clinician behind the technical skill: how confidence develops, how judgement is earned and what it actually takes to become someone patients and colleagues can trust with increasingly complex dentistry. A practical conversation for students and early-career dentists about becoming good before trying to look advanced. Dr David Attia’s Instagram: @dr.davidattia Ahmed’s Instagram: @drahmedissa Dr Mike’s Instagram: @thatdentistmike Key moments [01:14] Introducing Dr. David Attia [02:37] Building foundations for future implant work [05:52] Overcoming SimLab struggles [09:21] Preparing for complications and managing stress [13:05] Making the most of dental school [17:04] Understanding pressure and comparison [18:12] Finding the right mentor [24:21] Defining your values and purpose [27:05] What makes a new graduate an asset [29:40] Developing communication skills [32:07] Knowing when to say no to a case [36:30] Ambition, fear, and imposter syndrome [42:43] Practicing to improve clinical skills [44:48] Finding a supportive learning environment [46:36] Competing with yourself [47:41] Final advice for dental students Dr David Attia Dr David Attia is a general dentist with extensive postgraduate training and experience in oral surgery, implant dentistry and complex rehabilitation. After graduating from Griffith University, David completed postgraduate training in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopaedics, followed by a Master’s in Oral Implantology through Goethe University in Frankfurt. He now spends much of his clinical time in surgical and rehabilitative dentistry and is heavily involved in education, mentoring and live surgical training for dentists developing their skills in implant dentistry. What makes David particularly relevant to Dental Head Start is not simply the level at which he practises now, but the path it took to get there: struggling as a student, navigating mistakes and uncertainty, developing judgement through experience, and learning that technical ability alone is not what makes a good clinician. Feature #103: The Final Year Nobody Talks About with Ahmed Issa on Becoming a Dentist

Hosted by Dr Michael Shambira What does final-year dentistry actually feel like when graduation is close—but the responsibility of becoming a dentist is suddenly real? In this episode, Dr Michael Shambira turns the microphone towards Dental Headstart co-host and final-year dental student Ahmed Issa. Ahmed reflects honestly on the highs and lows of dental school, how the experience has shaped him, and the excitement, pressure and uncertainty he feels about entering the profession. This is more than an introduction to one of our hosts. It is a conversation about the transition every dentist experiences but rarely explores in depth: leaving the identity of “dental student” behind while still working out what kind of clinician—and person—you want to become. Whether listeners are still studying, approaching graduation or remembering their own final year, they will likely recognise part of their journey in Ahmed’s. The Unseen Curriculum: Formation Series #9 – The reflection habit that separates good dentists from great ones with Dr Uday Sen

Hosted by Dr Michael Shambira In this episode, Michael sits down with Dr Uday Sen to explore one of the most underrated skills in dentistry: how to reflect properly after a case. For many students and early-career dentists, reflection can become either vague, overly negative, or something rushed through after a difficult appointment. Uday shares a more practical and constructive approach: how to assess what went well, identify what could be improved, and turn clinical challenges into repeatable learning without spiralling into self-doubt. The conversation explores how high-performing clinicians process failure, why difficult cases can become some of our best teachers, and how structured reflection can help young dentists build confidence, clinical judgement, and emotional resilience over time. This episode is especially valuable for dental students, new graduates, and clinicians who want to grow intentionally rather than simply “survive” each clinical day. Known for his thoughtful approach to case reflection and self-assessment, Uday has developed practical tools to help students and early-career dentists review their cases more constructively, learn from difficult moments, and build confidence without becoming overly self-critical. The Unseen curriculum: Formation Series #7 – High Standards Without Self-Punishment with Dr Sam Gidaro

Hosted by Dr Michael Shambira In this episode, I sit down with Dr Sam Gidaro to unpack a tension many high-performing students and early-career dentists feel but rarely articulate: how do you pursue excellence without turning that pursuit inward? We explore the difference between high standards and self-criticism, why ambitious dentists often struggle to feel “good enough,” how early competence can mask internal pressure, and the role mentorship plays in calibrating expectations. We also discuss learning to grow without attaching identity to outcomes, and what healthy ambition actually looks like in the first few years of practice. Dr Sam Gidaro has been placing implants for over a decade and has developed a strong reputation for managing complex revision and rescue cases. He is known not only for his clinical standards, but also for his high personal and professional ethics, and his open, generous approach to mentorship and sharing knowledge with other clinicians. Hosted by Dr Michael Shambira In early dentistry, ambition and responsibility collide. You want to move quickly. You want to grow. You want to do meaningful work. But you’re also responsible for real people, and that changes everything. In this Formation episode of The Unseen Curriculum, I sit down with Johan Weemaes and Greg Fine to unpack one of the most important tensions in early career dentistry: How do you progress rapidly… without becoming reckless? We discuss: What young dentists misunderstand about their early years Why confidence follows structure, not the other way around The difference between exposure and readiness What makes someone truly coachable How to hold high standards without turning them into self-punishment Why restraint is part of excellence This conversation isn’t about implants or complexity. It’s about formation; the invisible shaping that happens before mastery becomes visible. If you’re a student or early-career dentist feeling the pressure to accelerate, this episode will give you clarity on how to move forward responsibly and sustainably. Because the dentists who progress the most are not the fastest. They’re the most formed. One of the most common findings when charting is a crack in a tooth, but determining the severity and the right treatment path can be a dilemma. In this episode, host Erica Hwin sits down with specialist prosthodontist Dr. Michael Mandikos to decode the complexities of cracked teeth, from initial diagnosis to the final restoration. You will learn the critical differences between benign craze lines and structural fractures, and why the biomechanics of old amalgam fillings often lead to these issues. Dr. Mandikos tackles the age-old debate of “chasing the crack,” offering practical advice on when to intervene with bonded look composites versus when to move to full coverage.
