S2E25: Counting My Macros? (What Does That Even Mean?)

Back to the basics: what macros actually are, how to count them, and how to fine-tune them for your bio-individual needs. Most people can recite wellness rules - hit your macros, eat the rainbow, cut carbs, eat more protein - and still cannot tell you what a macronutrient is, how it differs from a micronutrient, or how to sort a bag of groceries by protein, fat, and carbohydrate. This Body Wisdom Podcast episode with Jamie Belz, Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner and Master Health Coach with the Nutritional Therapy Association, rebuilds the language of food from the ground up. Jamie walks through nutrients vs. macronutrients vs. micronutrients, then breaks down the three macros in usable terms: Protein and amino acids, complete vs. incomplete proteins, digestion, absorption, and why a gram on a label is not the same as what your body can use Dietary fat, fatty acids, cholesterol, fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K, satiety, and why flax ALA is not the same as EPA and DHA from seafood Carbohydrates as sugars, starches, and fiber, gluconeogenesis, carefully selected whole-food carbs, resistant starch, and why carbs are not the enemy You will also get a practical method for tracking macros without turning food into a lifelong spreadsheet: how to use Cronometer for a 5–7 day baseline, what 4 / 4 / 9 calories per gram actually means, a 40/30/30 starting frame versus average American intake, and how to adjust protein, fat, or carbs from your body's feedback — hunger, energy, sleep, digestion, recovery — instead of the latest diet trend. This is a Foundations episode for anyone lost in carnivore vs. vegan arguments, protein powder debates, and influencer buzzwords who still wants to be the steward of their own health. Future Body Wisdom Basics episodes will build on this with micronutrients, vitamins and minerals, phytonutrients, zoonutrients, and bioavailability. If you have been nodding along in nutrition conversations, start here. In this episode: What "nutrient," "macronutrient," and "micronutrient" actually mean Protein, amino acids, and complete proteins from real food Fats, fatty acids, omega-3s (ALA, EPA, DHA), cholesterol, and real vs. industrial fats Carbohydrates, fiber, sugar, starches, blood sugar, and whole-food carb selection Why hydration can mimic "I need to change my macros" symptoms How to establish a baseline, track food intake, and make small adjustments using hunger, energy, digestion, sleep, and workout recovery as feedback. Why eating enough deserves attention before chasing a different macro split. Whether macro tracking is brand new or already part of a daily routine, this episode offers a clearer understanding of what those numbers represent and how to use them thoughtfully in your bio-individual pursuit of health. The foundations of health deserve attention before the expensive gizmos, gadgets, lotions, potions, and biohacks. Understanding food is one of those foundations. Every body is a case study of ONE, and better nutrition knowledge makes it easier to become an informed steward of your own health. SUBSCRIBE! Leave a review. Write comments. S2E24: IBS, Eczema, and Migraines Could Start with "Healthy" Food

Many people live with symptoms that quietly erode their quality of life, never realizing they may be responding adversely to foods they eat every day. What is considered a "superfood" to most of the world may be the trigger for tremendous suffering in a bio-individual whose body does not tolerate that food. Symptoms of food intolerances and sensitivities can include bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhea, headaches, migraines, joint pain, skin problems, brain fog, fatigue, and other forms of digestive or systemic distress. Because some food reactions may be delayed, connecting a symptom to a specific food can be incredibly difficult. In this episode of the Body Wisdom Podcast, Jamie Belz talks with James White, CEO and owner of KBMO Diagnostics, about food sensitivities, food intolerances, food allergies, inflammation, leaky gut/intestinal permeability, elimination diets, and bio-individual nutrition. James explains the difference between an immediate IgE food allergy and a delayed food sensitivity, why delayed reactions can be so difficult to pinpoint, and how the FIT, or Food Inflammation Test, can be used by Nutritional Therapy Practitioners as one tool within a larger assessment. Jamie also shares her family's experience with food sensitivity testing, including her father's dramatic health transformation and her own difficult discovery that eggs were causing digestive problems. This conversation explores: • Food allergies vs. food sensitivities vs. food intolerances • Immediate IgE reactions and delayed immune responses • Common symptoms associated with problematic foods • Digestive distress, migraines, skin issues, joint pain, fatigue, and brain fog • The relationship between inflammation, intestinal permeability (leaky gut) Food sensitivity testing and the KBMO FIT Test • Elimination diets and structured food reintroduction There is no universally perfect diet. A food can be nutrient-dense and still not work well for your body at this particular time. The goal is not to fear food or permanently eliminate everything that produces a reaction. The goal is to gather useful information, reduce your total inflammatory burden, support healing, and make informed choices based on your individual body. A test can provide information, but the work begins when the results arrive. You still have to decide what you are willing to do with that information. S2E23: Beauty and The Thyroid

Your thyroid affects nearly every system in your body, yet thyroid dysfunction can be missed for years when symptoms are dismissed or testing stops at TSH. In this episode of the Body Wisdom Podcast, Jamie sits down with fellow Nutritional Therapy Practitioner Alison Marras for a foundational conversation about thyroid health, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, Hashimoto's disease, Graves' disease, and the thyroid-gut connection. After years of digestive issues, painful periods, exhaustion, hair loss, blood sugar instability, PCOS symptoms, and being told her lab results were "normal," Alison was eventually diagnosed with Hashimoto's autoimmune disease. That experience led her back to school, through the Nutritional Therapy Practitioner program, and into a career helping other women uncover the root causes behind chronic symptoms. Jamie and Alison discuss common signs of thyroid dysfunction, including unexplained weight changes, fatigue, constipation, loose stools, hair loss, dry hair, thinning outer eyebrows, temperature intolerance, poor sleep, hormonal imbalances, anxiety, inflammation, and the frustrating feeling that something is wrong even when standard testing says otherwise. They also break down: • The difference between hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, Hashimoto's, and Graves' disease • Why TSH alone may not provide a complete picture of thyroid function • T4, T3, reverse T3, TPO antibodies, and thyroglobulin antibodies • The three-legged stool of autoimmunity: genetic susceptibility, intestinal permeability, and a trigger • How digestion and gut health influence thyroid function • The relationship between blood sugar, adrenal stress, cortisol, and thyroid hormones • Why birth control, perimenopause, menopause, chronic stress, nutrient deficiencies, and total toxic load can become tipping points • Iodine, selenium, nutrient status, and why supplementation must be bio-individual • The role thyroid medication can play alongside foundational support • How to advocate for comprehensive testing and find a practitioner who will listen • Where to start your healing journey Alison is a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, Restorative Wellness Practitioner, Holistic Health Coach, Certified Yoga Instructor, passionate home chef, and the founder of Food by Mars. She turned her own Hashimoto's healing journey into a functional nutrition practice that has supported more than 500 women struggling with autoimmune conditions, IBS, food sensitivities, hormonal imbalances, inflammation, and a damaged relationship with food. This conversation is a reminder that your body is not broken. Symptoms are communication, lab ranges are not the same as optimal function, and your thyroid cannot be separated from the health of the rest of your body. Supporting the foundations gives every other tool, treatment, medication, or protocol a stronger place to work. S2E22: "SCIENCE" (With Air Quotes)

"Science" deserves air quotes when vested interests, institutional pride, and powerful financial incentives begin protecting conclusions instead of testing them. History gives us plenty of reasons to stay curious. Heroin was marketed as a cough remedy. Thalidomide was prescribed during pregnancy. DDT was widely sprayed. Asbestos filled homes. Mercury compounds were widely used. Doctors appeared in cigarette ads. Lead paint, shoe-fitting X-rays, and radium "health" products were once accepted. Vioxx was prescribed to millions before cardiovascular concerns led to its withdrawal. The list is lengthy and will someday include things we consider "safe and effective" today. In this hard-hitting episode of The Body Wisdom Podcast, Jamie Belz examines medical history, Big Pharma, Big Food, agency capture, industry-funded research, informed consent, health freedom, and the foundational assumptions hiding beneath modern healthcare. We follow the "turtles all the way down" from Cartesian mind-body separation to symptom suppression, birth control prescribed to young girls before later hormonal chaos and fertility struggles, the low-fat campaign, cholesterol fear, gallbladder removal, antidepressant marketing, vaccine placebo controls, and one-size-fits-all medicine. This is not an argument against science, medication, surgery, or every modern treatment. It is an argument for honest science: testing, challenging, replicating, correcting, following the money, and changing course when better evidence emerges. Science is a method, not an authority. "Experts once recommended it" is not a substitute for evidence, informed consent, bio-individuality, and your responsibility to become your own personal health advocate. S2E21: Can Food Labels Lie?

You read the label. You paid more for the healthier option. You chose the chips, mayonnaise, or salad dressing made with avocado oil because you were intentionally avoiding cheaper, highly processed oils. But what if what's listed on the package is not actually what is in the food? A recent UC Davis study published in Applied Food Research tested processed foods that listed avocado oil as their only edible oil. Researchers analyzed 54 samples representing two production lots of 27 products purchased from California stores and online retailers during 2025 and 2026. They found that 48 of the 54 samples, or 89%, had an oil composition inconsistent with authentic avocado oil. The results included: 93% of the avocado oil chips tested 71% of the avocado oil mayonnaises tested 100% of the avocado oil salad dressings tested The results raise serious questions about ingredient sourcing, label accuracy, supply-chain accountability, and whether consumers are receiving what they paid for. Read the UC Davis report. In this episode of The Body Wisdom Podcast, Jamie Belz is joined by fellow FNTP, Heather McDonough, to talk about navigating a food system filled with misleading health claims, lengthy ingredient lists, questionable oils, hidden sugar, artificial colors, and products designed to appear healthier than they are. Heather also takes listeners behind the scenes of Eat Gangster, the food company she co-founded to create baking mixes for people following therapeutic or restorative diets. She explains the time, expense, and responsibility involved in sourcing high-quality ingredients, testing raw materials for contaminants such as lead, managing supply-chain disruptions, and holding products to standards that may be more stringent than the minimum required by regulators. Jamie and Heather also discuss: Why "healthy," "natural," "keto-friendly," and "gluten-free" do not automatically mean nutrient-dense Which fats to cook with How to recognize heavily processed food-like products Why responsible food manufacturers rely on testing instead of simply trusting suppliers How to translate grams of sugar into teaspoons Which packaged foods can still provide convenient, nutrient-dense options How farmers markets and local producers can bring us closer to the source of our food Simple ways to make real food more convenient How to prioritize protein, fiber, and traditional fats when planning meals How the EWG's Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen can help guide produce purchases This is not a call to become afraid of food or to believe that health requires perfection. It is a call to become an educated consumer. We cannot personally test every product in the grocery store, but we can learn to question marketing claims, read ingredient lists, support trustworthy producers, make more food at home, and move closer to real, nutrient-dense food whenever possible. * Resources mentioned: Eat Gangster (Heather's Company) EWG's Dirty Dozen & Clean 15 Nourishing Traditions Book Weston A Price Foundation * S1E69 on Dr. Weston A Price S1E49 on Seed Oils S1E41 with Sally Fallon Morell S1E6 on Dr. Pottenger's Cat Study S2E2 AI in the Kitchen * Work with Heather at NTA Health Get Your Free Health Assessment Work with a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner (NTP) in Private Practice * Interested in becoming an NTP? S2E20: Healthy People Are Annoying

In last week's episode, Mark Abraham said something that got people talking. Mark had spent years exhausted, foggy, sleep-deprived, inflamed, in pain, and dependent on caffeine, energy drinks, sugar, and processed food to get through his rotating shifts. When he encountered energetic, disciplined people who appeared to feel good, their health did not inspire him. It annoyed him. The comment was funny, but also incredibly honest - - - and a lot of people resonated with what Mark had admitted. Several people reached out to share his sentiments. Mark did not really "hate healthy, happy people." He disliked how he felt around them. Their energy, choices, and happiness brought his own health struggles into sharper focus. "Healthy People Are Annoying" is a conversation that stemmed from this conversation we were having with several of you behind the scenes. In this episode, Jamie Belz is joined by Makiah Cardinal, a clinical mental health counselor and marriage and family therapist, to examine what is actually happening when someone else's health, happiness, confidence, or success irritates us. Makiah explains how deep-seated insecurity and resentment can surface when another person has something we believe we lack. Rather than recognizing those uncomfortable feelings as information, we may criticize the person, minimize what they have accomplished, or convince ourselves that their life must be easier than ours. Social media pours gasoline on that reaction. We scroll through curated homes, bodies, marriages, careers, and lifestyles while being sold the message that we are inadequate. Eventually, someone else's good life can start to feel like evidence that ours is not good enough. This episode explores how comparison, jealousy, anxiety, fear of failure, and identity affect a person's willingness to change. Jamie and Makiah also discuss gratitude, resilience, the fear of being a beginner, and why returning for the second workout, class, or attempt may matter more than getting the first one right. In this conversation: • Why healthy people can trigger resentment and insecurity • How comparison and social media affect mental health • Why gratitude can shift anxiety and restore perspective • The difference between acknowledging hardship and living inside it • How doing difficult things develops resilience • Why embarrassment and fear of failure stop people from beginning • Identity role confusion, imposter syndrome, and "rebranding" your life Holistic health is not limited to nutrition, hydration, movement, sleep, digestion, or blood sugar regulation. Our thoughts, relationships, media, emotional patterns, and environments contribute to our total load too. The next time someone's joyfulness, health, or success gets under your skin, pause before deciding that person is the problem. Double-click on that. (Cool saying cred. to The feeling may be revealing something you want, something you miss, or something you are finally ready to change. ______________________________________________________ Episodes Mentioned: S2E19: Mark's Testimonial S2E3: Healthy Eating Made Easier with AI S2E81: Wellness 101 _______________________________________________________ Want to work on YOUR health? S2E19: Mark Lost "A Ton of Weight" and Feels "40 Again!"

Meet Mark. Mark is an inspiring example of what can change in just eight months when someone stops chasing complicated health solutions and starts giving the body what it actually needs. In this powerful testimonial episode of The Body Wisdom Podcast, Jamie Belz is joined by Mark and Heather McDonough, FNTP, RWP, to share an extraordinary story of foundational healing, personal responsibility, and the body's remarkable capacity for change. After 35 years of working rotating 12-hour shifts, Mark knew his health was slipping. He was living with relentless brain fog, extreme sleep deprivation, digestive pain, low energy, constant hunger, and a growing dependence on energy drinks, caffeine, sugar, and processed food. During night shifts, he stayed awake with energy drinks and Mountain Dew. He had struggled with diverticulitis for two years, spent months on antibiotics, and had taken medication for high blood pressure and cholesterol for more than a decade. An unexpected father-daughter trip led Mark to hear Jamie speak at a conference, and that's when everything changed. He enrolled in the Foundations of Healing course through the NTA and began learning how food, hydration, sleep, digestion, and blood sugar regulation influence the entire body, and eventually started working one-on-one with Heather through NTA Health. Mark did not follow a restrictive diet, count every calorie, or purchase a collection of miracle products. He followed the teachings of the NTA. Eight months later, Mark reports losing nearly 25 pounds without feeling like he is on a restrictive diet. His brain fog has lifted, his digestive pain has resolved, his hunger and sugar cravings have changed, and his energy has returned. He is active after work instead of collapsing into a recliner, and he says he feels at least ten years younger. One former coworker even stopped him to ask why he looked younger and happier. Heather explains how Nutritional Therapy Practitioners use tools such as a Nutritional Assessment Questionnaire, food and mood journals, symptom-burden graphs, and individualized client conversations to identify foundational priorities. She and Jamie explore how supporting a nutrient-dense diet, digestion, blood sugar regulation, hydration, sleep, and stress can create a ripple effect throughout the body. This candid conversation also covers the realities of changing deeply ingrained habits, navigating restaurants and social events, recognizing hidden sugar in supposedly healthy foods, building protein-rich meals, rethinking the standard American breakfast, and learning to make sustainable choices based on how you want to feel. Mark's story is not about perfection. It is a powerful example of what can happen when education, accountability, functional nutrition, and consistent daily decisions come together. Listen to discover how the Foundations of Healing course introduced Mark to a new way of supporting his body, how personalized nutritional therapy through NTA Health helped him put that knowledge into practice, and why eating real food, drinking water, prioritizing protein, and listening to the body may be far more transformative than they sound. _______________________________________________________ Want to work on YOUR health? S2E18: This Shockingly Simple Wellness Tip Could Change Everything (and it's free!)

People spend enormous amounts of money on supplements, organic food, specialty diets, and the latest wellness technology. But what if one of the most overlooked ways to support digestion, satisfaction, and a healthier relationship with food has been hiding in plain sight all along? In this episode of The Body Wisdom Podcast, Jamie Belz reveals a shockingly simple wellness practice that is available almost anywhere, works with nearly every dietary philosophy, and costs absolutely nothing. Jamie explores dopamine, food cravings, reward pathways, sensory-specific satiety, distracted eating, and the modern "gimme, gimme" cycle that can keep people reaching for more. She explains the biological signals that help the body recognize hunger, satisfaction, and fullness. The episode then overviews digestion from the top down, revealing that the process begins long before food reaches the stomach. The brain, senses, vagus nerve, digestive secretions, oral processing, and gut-brain connection are all part of a highly coordinated conversation. When meals are rushed, distracted, or consumed on autopilot, an important part of that conversation can be missed. The solution is not another prescription, supplement, powder, gadget, or complicated biohack. It is something extraordinarily ordinary that could change the way listeners experience their very next meal. In this episode, Jamie explores: • Dopamine, anticipation, and the difference between wanting and liking • Why the first bite or first sip feels especially rewarding • Sensory-specific satiety and why variety can encourage overeating • Food cues, emotional eating, habitual eating, and the reward cycle • The gut-brain connection and natural satiation signaling • The cephalic phase of digestion and the role of the vagus nerve • Saliva, salivary amylase, lingual lipase, and oral processing • GLP-1, CCK, PYY, hunger cues, fullness cues, and meal satisfaction • Why distracted or rushed eating can work against mindful digestion • How a food and mood journal can reveal personal patterns and triggers • The difference between stopping satisfied and stopping stuffed • A free mindful-eating experiment to try with the next meal >>> THE SHOCKINGLY SIMPLE AND FREE WELLNESS TIP THAT COULD CHANGE YOUR LIFE! This is not about deprivation, dieting, or forcing anyone to chew every bite a prescribed number of times. It is about restored communication, not restriction. Jamie challenges listeners to sit down, look at their food, smell it, express gratitude, take a reasonable bite, set down the fork, taste the food, and chew until it is thoroughly broken down before reaching for the next bite. No one can personally control every stage of digestion, absorption, or assimilation. But everyone can control the part assigned to the mouth. Accuracy note: Chewing supports digestion, nutrient accessibility, oral processing, and satiation signaling. It does not guarantee absorption or assimilation, which also depend on stomach acid, pancreatic enzymes, bile, intestinal health, nutrient status, medications, disease states, food matrix, and other bioindividual factors. S2E17: Did She Say, "Glutton-Free?"

This is Jamie Belz. For this episode, I wanted to personally tell you what it is about and why this conversation matters to me. Last week, my sister and I took five kids on a road trip through South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, and North Dakota. We were gone for a full week, but we only ate at restaurants twice. We had to buy some things along the way - feeding seven people for a week takes a lot of food - but the majority of our food was pre-made, froze, and packed in the coolers from home. Each morning while one of us made breakfast, the other packed lunches to eat on mountaintops and snacks for extra calories for those powerful little kiddos on the way up and back. We hiked Black Elk Peak, formerly known as Harney Peak, the Little Devils Tower Trail, and several others. We were constantly moving, exploring, climbing, and experiencing some of the most beautiful places in the country. We were extremely active and ate well, but we really did not eat very much. We were always on the go. We did not have constant access to food as I do during my typical days. We ate when we needed to eat, enjoyed what we brought, and continued with the adventure. Given the measured portions we had, it wasn't possible to overeat. Had there been more available, I definitely would have eaten more. That's a habit I've developed. (I'm especially guilty of being the family garbage disposal because I never want to waste our nutrient-dense foods. Ugh.) After eating "less than normal" [and never late at night] for the full week - I came home feeling incredible. Yes, the hiking, fresh air, sunshine, movement, and time outside absolutely mattered - of course - but it is undeniable that nearly every day, I am eating more food than my body needs. At home, I can eat because it is convenient, because something sounds good, because I am bored, or simply because the food is there. On this trip, I was busy living. Food nourished the experience, but it was not the experience. That realization brought me back to a word that is fascinating to me: gluttony. I know. People don't like it. "Gluttony" can feel judgmental, shameful, and even offensive. But what does the word actually mean? And could avoiding this topic be preventing us from having one of the most important conversations about our health? This episode is not about guilt, shame, body size, starvation, or obsessive restriction. It is an honest and compassionate conversation about excess, food noise, overeating, and the culture of constant consumption we have accepted as normal. Compassion and honesty are not enemies. Thank you for being here. Alla nostra salute! -Jamie In this episode: • What gluttony actually means • Why overeating is not simply a failure of discipline • How ultra-processed foods encourage overconsumption • The connection between food noise, compulsive eating, and GLP-1 medications • How eating too much contributes to metabolic dysfunction • Why nutrient-dense food quality and appropriate quantity both matter • Physical hunger, emotional hunger, and habitual eating • Changing your eating rhythm and environment • Replacing compulsive eating with healthier habits • Why you cannot hate your body into health • When to seek professional help _______________________________________________________ Want more? S2E16: Are GLP-1s Really That Bad?

GLP-1 medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound are everywhere, but are they dangerous shortcuts, life-changing tools, or both? In this episode of The Body Wisdom Podcast, Jamie Belz, FNTP, MHC, and nutrition expert Kelly Dorfman examine both sides of the GLP-1 debate, including the risks, benefits, and unanswered questions surrounding semaglutide, tirzepatide, weight loss, blood sugar, food noise, and metabolic health. Kelly Dorfman, M.S., L.D.N., is a leading expert in using therapeutic nutrition to support brain function, energy, and mood. She has appeared on CNN's American Morning and in The Wall Street Journal, O, The Oprah Magazine, and Goop. Her award-winning book, Cure Your Child with Food: The Hidden Connections Between Nutrition and Childhood Ailments, was praised by Publishers Weekly for its "fascinating and potentially life-changing advice." GLP-1 medications are criticized as an easy button for weight loss. They can cause nausea, vomiting, constipation, dehydration, nutrient deficiencies, muscle loss, bone loss, and other serious side effects. Questions remain about their long-term effects, what happens when someone stops taking them, and whether users may need them for life. At the same time, GLP-1s are life-changing for some people. They may help those who have spent years battling obesity, insulin resistance, constant hunger, food noise, or a body that will not respond despite consistent effort. These medications may quiet obsessive thoughts about food, reduce overeating, improve metabolic markers, and remove shame from a struggle not always solved by discipline. So, are GLP-1s really that bad? Or have both sides become too absolute? Jamie and Kelly explore: • How Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, Zepbound, semaglutide, and tirzepatide differ • Why appetite, food noise, overeating, and weight are not simply matters of willpower • How GLP-1s affect digestion, blood sugar, inflammation, and reward pathways • Why rapid weight loss can mean losing muscle, collagen, and essential nutrients • The benefits of reducing overeating and improving metabolic health • The risks of digestive problems, dehydration, nutrient deficiencies, and diminished desire • Why protein, fiber, hydration, nutrients, and professional support matter • Whether GLP-1s are temporary tools or lifelong commitments • What may happen when someone stops taking a GLP-1 • How GLP-1s may affect alcohol cravings and other compulsive behaviors • Why foundational health habits still matter • How to make an informed, bio-individual decision without shame, hype, or fear GLP-1 medications are neither all good nor all bad. For the wrong person, they may create more problems than they solve. For the right person, with the right dose and support, they may be genuinely life-changing. S2E15: Is Your Weight Struggle PMOS (Formerly PCOS)?

It's estimated that 1 in 8 women have PMOS. Most of them have never even heard of it. You probably know it by its old name: PCOS. In one of the biggest updates to women's health in years, experts officially changed the name from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) to Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) because the old name missed the bigger picture. This isn't just about ovaries. It's about your metabolism, your hormones, your blood sugar, your energy, and how your entire body functions. If you've been battling stubborn weight, acne, irregular periods, facial hair, anxiety, food noise, infertility, fatigue, inflammation, or you constantly feel like your body isn't responding no matter how "healthy" you're trying to be, this episode is for you. Joining Jamie once again is Nutritional Therapy Practitioner and "Your Blood Sugar Bestie" Ashley Lawrence, who was diagnosed with PMOS herself and has since reversed her symptoms and lost her diagnosis by getting to the root cause instead of chasing them one at a time. Together, they break down what this name change actually means for you, why so many women have slipped through the cracks for years, and how all those random, frustrating symptoms you've been dealing with might actually be connected to the same root cause. You'll learn: • PCOS → PMOS: why the name changed and what it really means • Insulin resistance in PMOS (even without weight gain) • Prevalence: 1 in 8 women, many undiagnosed • Blood sugar dysregulation and its impact on hormones, mood, digestion, inflammation, fertility, and energy • Why calorie restriction and high-intensity workouts can backfire • Ashley's simple blood sugar–balancing meal formula to reduce cravings and food noise • Key supports: therapeutic teas, minerals, movement, and lifestyle habits for hormone balance • How Ashley reversed her symptoms using Foundations of Health vs. heavy supplement protocols • Sustainable healing without extreme restriction If you've ever wondered why your friend can skip meals, survive on iced coffee, work out six days a week, and lose weight while you feel exhausted doing everything "right," this conversation will help you understand why. Your body isn't failing you. It's communicating with you. And when you learn its language and listen to its wisdom, everything changes. _______________________________________________________________________________ If this episode encouraged you, challenged your thinking, or gave you hope, please share it with someone you love. S2E14: A Sugar Substitute with Health Benefits

What if sugar could be good for you? Today's guest created a sugar substitute that is loaded with health benefits. Could your deserts really be good for you? (According to her they can!) In this episode of The Body Wisdom Podcast, Jamie sits down with Natalie Nicole, CEO of Dulsa Sweetener, to unpack one of the biggest conversations in modern wellness. What is sugar actually doing inside the body? Are artificial sweeteners really any better? Is high fructose corn syrup as harmful as we've been told? What about monk fruit, stevia, allulose, erythritol, xylitol, honey, maple syrup, and the countless "healthy" sugar substitutes lining grocery store shelves? Together, they touch on blood sugar regulation, gut health, inflammation, metabolic dysfunction, fatty liver disease, food addiction, and why so many people struggle to break free from sugar cravings. Natalie also shares the personal story that launched her into the wellness world, how her aunt's multiple sclerosis diagnosis changed the course of her life, and why she ultimately set out to create a different kind of sweetener designed to support health instead of simply satisfying a sweet tooth. This is not about perfection. It's about becoming an informed consumer. You are the only person qualified to get you to your personal health goals. In This Episode: • Natalie's incredible journey from caring for her aunt with multiple sclerosis to becoming the creator and CEO of Dulsa Sweetener • Why sugar became one of the most profitable ingredients in the modern food supply • The surprising differences between cane sugar, high fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners, sugar alcohols, and natural alternatives • The truth about monk fruit, stevia, allulose, honey, maple syrup, and fruit • Why your taste buds can be retrained instead of controlled by cravings • How to become an informed consumer in a world full of confusing food marketing • Why Natalie set out to create a functional sweetener instead of just another sugar substitute • The free daily habits both Jamie and Natalie prioritize for better energy, sleep, gut health, and long-term wellness Can you really have your cake and eat it too? Maybe. Not by pretending sugar doesn't matter, but by learning how to enjoy sweetness in a way that supports your body instead of working against it. This episode isn't about guilt or giving up everything you love. It's about making wiser choices, retraining your palate, and discovering that healthy living doesn't have to feel like deprivation. The sweetest life isn't the one with the most sugar. It's the one that gives you the freedom to enjoy it without sacrificing your health. S2E13: Are You Actually Free?

What does it actually mean to be free? Every year, we celebrate Independence Day with flags, fireworks, and gratitude for the freedoms we enjoy in the United States. But Jamie asks a different question in this episode: if we're living with chronic disease, anxiety, addiction, exhaustion, obesity, or simply surviving instead of truly living... are we really free? In this solo episode, Jamie explores the idea of health freedom, not as a political movement, but as the freedom to become an active participant in your own health journey. She discusses why bio-individuality matters, how epigenetics offers hope that our genes are not our destiny, and why the Foundations of Health remain the most powerful tools we have despite the endless stream of new wellness trends. From brain fog and burnout to hormones, ADHD, binge eating, alcohol, weight struggles, and chronic disease, this conversation is a reminder that lasting health isn't found in a quick fix. It's built through the small decisions we make every day. Whether you're just beginning your wellness journey or you've been on it for years, this episode will encourage you to stop waiting for "someday" and start becoming the healthiest, strongest version of yourself today. S2E10: Dare We Talk About Vaccines?

Vaccines are one of the most emotionally charged topics in modern health conversations, but what if we approached them with curiosity instead of fear, critical thinking instead of censorship, and informed consent instead of blind compliance? In this powerful and thought-provoking episode of the Body Wisdom Podcast, Jamie Belz, FNTP, MHC, sits down with Zoe O'Toole — writer, editor, health freedom advocate, and publisher liaison for Children's Health Defense — to explore one of the most controversial conversations of our time. Alongside Mary Holland, Zoe co-edited the anonymously written, groundbreaking book Turtles All the Way Down: Vaccine Science and Myth, a comprehensive compilation of "mainstream studies" from traditionally pro-vaccine sources, a thorough examination of vaccine research, and the narratives surrounding this vast topic. Together, Jamie and Zoe discuss personal experiences that challenged their own assumptions, the importance of bio-individuality in healthcare decisions, and why asking questions is perhaps the most critical first step in personal health advocacy. Whether you're a parent making decisions for your children, someone navigating vaccine injury within your family, or simply seeking a more nuanced understanding of the vaccine debate, this episode invites you to think critically, listen deeply, and advocate courageously. Some discussion points covered: • Zoe's journey into vaccine research and health advocacy • Jamie's family's experience following the HPV (Gardasil) vaccine • The concept of bio-individuality and why one-size-fits-all medicine falls short • The history of the 1986 National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act and the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program • The composition of Turtles All the Way Down • Concerns surrounding vaccine safety, liability protections, and informed consent • The role of pharmaceutical influence in media, research, and public health policy • Why conversations around vaccines often become polarized • Vaccine exemptions: medical, religious, and philosophical considerations • How parents can become empowered health advocates without fear or shame • The importance of courage, curiosity, and asking better questions At its core, this episode isn't about telling you what to think. It's about encouraging you to think for yourself. As Jamie shares, "It's not about being anti-anything. It's about being a pro-informed consumer." If you've ever felt uncomfortable asking questions about vaccines, uncertain about the recommendations presented to your family, or frustrated by the lack of nuanced dialogue in today's culture, this conversation is for you. From ultra-processed foods and pesticides to environmental toxins, pharmaceuticals, and chronic disease, it can feel overwhelming to try to make sense of it all - - - especially when our health "authorities" seem to continuously change their minds about what's good for us and what's killing us - - - and everything seems to be poison now. In this eye-opening conversation, Jamie Belz, FNTP, MHC, sits down with veteran pediatrician, integrative physician, author, speaker, and health freedom fighter, and author Dr. Michelle Perro, MD, DHom, to discuss one of the biggest questions of today: How do we pursue true health in an increasingly toxic world? There is a vibrance, energy, resilience, and optimism that stands out. Jamie and Michelle discuss how surrounding yourself with people who value health can accelerate your own journey and help you stay the course when the path feels unconventional. S2E8: 40 Days Without Caffeine or Stimulants - What My Body Taught Me

What happens when you remove caffeine, energy drinks, nicotine, nootropics, and every form of artificial stimulation for 40 days? In this deeply personal and science-backed episode of the Body Wisdom Podcast, host Jamie Belz, FNTP, MHC shares her raw experience going completely stimulant-free to reset her system after falling into the caffeine and "uppers" trap during the darkest stretch of the brutal Minnesota winter. Jamie shares what her "case study of one" revealed about stimulants, dopamine, blood sugar dysregulation, adrenal stress, sleep, cravings, nervous system overload, and what natural energy actually feels like. During the busy and dark season, Jamie slowly began leaning on external inputs for energy: caffeine, "clean" energy drinks, pre-workouts, nicotine patches, nootropics, and herbal preparations designed to energize, enhance focus, and otherwise prop her up while she felt she was struggling to maintain adequate levels of energy during the winter. Jamie shares her "red flag" was when she began recognizing symptoms of blood sugar dysregulation and realized her body was no longer running on natural energy. It was running on stress hormones. You'll learn what Jamie did to turn it around and the life-changing discovery she uncovered through this season of her personal wellness journey. In this episode, Jamie breaks down: What stimulants are actually doing inside the body How caffeine impacts cortisol, adrenaline, dopamine, and adenosine Why stimulants do not create energy. They borrow it. The connection between caffeine, blood sugar crashes, binge eating, and cravings Why sugar cravings exploded after quitting stimulants The science behind feeling "wired but tired" How hyperpalatable foods and stimulants hijack reward pathways The physiological realities of the blood sugar roller coaster most Americans are living on The difference between being a sugar burner versus a fat burner Why "clean" energy drinks still create physiological stress The role of sunlight, vitamin D, hydration, sleep, movement, and nutrient-dense foods in restoring real energy How dopamine recalibration changes your perception of energy, motivation, and focus Why nervous system regulation is foundational to health The modern cycle of caffeine, nicotine, stimulants, alcohol, and sleep aids and why it leaves so many people exhausted Jamie also shares practical, bio-individual strategies for rebuilding stable, sustainable energy through the Foundations of Health, including blood sugar regulation, hydration, restorative sleep, joyful movement, nutrient-dense eating, nervous system support, and learning to listen to your body again. If you have ever felt: Exhausted but unable to sleep Dependent on caffeine just to function Stuck in the cycle of energy crashes and cravings Disconnected from your body Burned out, overstimulated, foggy, anxious, or inflamed This episode is for you. S2E6: Constipation, ED & Peeing Your Pants Are Not "Normal" - Fortify Your Pelvic Floor

Can deep squats "cure" constipation, incontinence, and erectile dysfunction? These and other symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction are common, but they're not "normal" and certainly aren't optimal. While these quality-of-life-impacting symptoms are frequently attributed to other causes and are often approached with surgeries and prescriptions, many could be easily remedied with daily deep squats! In this episode of the Body Wisdom Podcast, host Jamie Belz sits down with pelvic floor physical therapist Dr. Ashley Zimmerman to talk about the surprising ways pelvic floor health impacts bladder control, constipation, digestion, sexual health, core stability, hip and back pain, athletic performance, postpartum recovery, breathing, and overall quality of life. From leaking when you sneeze or jump, to painful sex, erectile dysfunction, prolapse, diastasis recti, chronic constipation, ankle instability, and feeling disconnected from your body, Dr. Ashley explains why the pelvic floor is one of the most under-recognized foundations of health. She also shares simple, practical ways to begin supporting pelvic floor function, including deep squats, diaphragmatic breathing, better bathroom posture, movement throughout the day, and working with a pelvic floor physical therapist.
