Titan – The Moon with Rivers of Methane

Saturn's largest moon looks almost like a distant cousin of early Earth: a thick atmosphere, rivers, lakes, rain and genuine weather. But every drop of that rain is liquid methane rather than water, and the ground underfoot is ice as hard as granite. This episode explores Titan's strange hydrocarbon world, the historic Huygens landing, the hidden ocean thought to lie beneath its icy crust, and the genuinely speculative question of exotic, non-water-based chemistry that might, just possibly, be life-friendly. You'll come away understanding why Titan has such a thick atmosphere unlike any other moon in the solar system, how its methane weather cycle mirrors Earth's water cycle, what the Huygens probe found when it landed in 2005, why scientists suspect a subsurface water ocean and continue to debate the evidence for cryovolcanism, and why NASA's upcoming Dragonfly mission is designed to fly between sites on Titan rather than roll across its surface.
