Your Brain on Climate - with Dave Powell
This week I'm chatting to sustainability podcasting royalty! Dave Powell was co-host of the popular Sustainababble podcast from 2015-2022, publishing a whopping 274 episodes, and is now the host of Your Brain on Climate, a podcast all about climate change and psychology. I’m kind of fascinated by the psychology and behavioural science behind climate action, or not climate action, and wanted to get Dave on to learn from him, what he’s learned from his eminent and very knowledgeable guests over the years. And of course, to pepper him with questions about some of the sometimes slightly bewildering terminology that can be batted around, like 'pleuralistic ignorance', 'cognitive dissonance' and 'bystander effect'. Charity Shop World - with Tansy Hoskins
I thought I knew a bit about sustainable fashion but this chat, and the book behind it all, Charity Shop World by Tansy Hoskins, blew me away. There’s been quite a bit in the press in recent weeks and months about the impact of Vinted on both overall consumption levels of fast fashion, and on charity shops, but it turns out, that’s just scratching the surface. Listen to hear about the link between charity shops and austerity, the fashion industry and imperialism, how many YEARS of human labour it takes to make one years worth of clothes, how we’re all being expertly manipulated by social media algorithms, and how, as with most (all?) things, it all comes down to industries who have a single goal, of making billionaires even richer. How to have (better) climate conversations - with Claire Brown from Larger Us
According to climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe, the most important thing we can do to fight climate change is talk about it. But the reality, certainly for me, and if attendees on my Carbon Literacy courses are anything to do by, for others too, it isn’t easy. We worry that we don’t know all the facts and stats and maybe we’re going to get stuck in an argument with a climate denier. We worry that people will think we’re judging them, that they will think we’re a hypocrite if we’re not ‘perfect environmentalist’ (side note, there’s no such thing). In this weeks episode, I'm chatting to Claire Brown, Deputy Director at Larger Us, and climate conversationalist extraordinaire! The Big Toy Swap - with Charlotte Mason-Curl
In the UK we buy 37 million toys a year! And 80% of them end up in landfill, incinerators, or the oceans. In this episode I'm welcoming Charlotte Mason-Curl, founder of No Crap Parties back to the podcast. Zero Waste(ish)

Climate anxiety - with Linda Aspey
In this episode we take a dive into climate anxiety, and I’m chatting to Linda Aspey who amongst many other roles is Director of Psychology at the People’s Emergency Briefing and a board member of the Climate Psychology Alliance. We explore: - what is climate anxiety? -why do some people have it and some don’t? - why for some people it tips into something that starts to disturb their ability to do the things they want and need to - some of the things that can help. What makes a pilot give up flying? With Dan Tipney
This week I’m joined by Dan Tipney, a former airline pilot who co-founded Safe Landing, a community of aviation workers and enthusiasts, working together to figure out what it might look like to have a world where aviation flourishes, in harmony with nature. This episode isn’t an episode in flight shaming anyone, and absolutely doesn’t have the intention of making anyone feel bad about the choices they’re making. We obviously talk about the impact of flying, because coming to terms with the cold hard facts around that is a key part of Dan’s story. But this episode is more about the power of story-telling and conversations, about how two things can be true at the same time, and about how learning to recognise that and sit with the discomfort that it can bring, could help us all to have better climate conversations. Parents for Future with Charlotte Howell
The idea of 'activism' can be off putting and perhaps a little daunting for many of us. Poo bags! With Alice Judge and Gavin Gan from Pet Impact
This episode we’re doing a deep dive into Poo bags! If you’re one of the 41% of households in the UK who own a pet dog, you will (hopefully) be familiar with poo bags, and may be getting through a fair few of them. (If you’re not a dog owner, please do keep listening – we have lots of chat about biodegradable and compostable plastic and what that means – honestly, I’ve made that sound super dull, but it’s actually really interesting!) and it applies to all kinds of plastics that are labelled as compostable eg coffee cups, plastic cups you might get at festivals etc etc. So keep listening!). Pet Impact are on a mission to reduce waste from the veterinary and pet spaces. When they first started looking at poo bags, they made the same assumption as I had done, and possibly you might have done too, that a compostable poo bag must be the most environmentally friendly option. But as you’ll hear in the podcast, sometimes trying to figure out what the most environmentally friendly option is complicated, and if we just focus on the disposal end of a products life cycle, we’re not getting the full picture. I love the depth of research that Alice and Gav have gone into with their Reseacled poo bags, and their honesty around their poo bags still not being a perfect solution. Because, spoiler alert, when it comes to poo bags, at the moment, there is no perfect solution. Climate citizens (and how to be a good one!) with Rebecca Willis
Climate Change, sadly, has become increasingly polarised in the UK over the last couple of years. And MPs consistently underestimate public support for climate action – they read the same skewed media that we do, and the minority who oppose more ambitious, or indeed any, action, often have the loudest voices. If you’ve ever wondered whether it’s really worth getting in touch with your MP, or how best to engage with them, this episode is a must listen. Rebecca Willis is a Professor in Energy & Climate Governance at the University of Manchester, where she leads the Climate Citizens research group, looking into the role of public engagement in energy and climate governance. She is an expert advisor to the Climate Change Committee – the independent body that advises the government on tackling and preparing for climate change. And in 2019-2020, she was an Expert Lead to Climate Assembly UK, the first national Citizens’ Assembly on Climate Change, which is something we dive into in the podcast. Becky is also the author of Too Hot to Handle – the democratic challenge of climate change. Climate action for small businesses, made easy, With Jo Hand
90% of businesses in the UK are classes as SMEs, or small and medium businesses, having 205 employees or less. So chances are, you might work for one, or even run one. Did you know that SME's account for around half of the total emissions for businesses? So making it easy, or easier for SMEs to get started with climate action, is a pretty big lever for reducing emissions. Sustainable Style (or how to find clothes you love that don't cost the earth) with Becky Barnes
Fashion is one of the most polluting industries on the planet, and we no longer talk about 'fast fashion' but 'ultra-fast fashion' with the rise of retailers like Shein and Temu churning out over 100billion items of clothing every year. Consumption has doubled since the year 2000, but many of us will relate to the feeling of having nothing to wear, whilst we simultaneously feel overwhelmed at the volume of clothes in our wardrobes and drawers. Becky Barnes is a 'sustainable stylist' who embarked on 'styling' career with the ambition of helping women to feel good about themselves, but then stumbled across the heavy environmental impact of the fashion industry. She subsequently pivoted her business to focus on 'sustainable style' and now helps women to not only feel good about themselves, but to feel good about the clothes they're wearing.
