The Old World Schism: What You Need To Know | Warhammer the Old World | Square Based Show
Is the great Warhammer Schism finally coming to an end? For years, the divide between the Main Studio (AoS/40k) and the Specialist Design Studio (Old World/Heresy) banished half our favorite factions to "Legacy" status. But with Horus Heresy suddenly announcing official cross-compatibility with 40k Custodes AND Age of Sigmar Daemons, the wall seems to be coming down! We speculate on what this means for the upcoming Arcane Journals, the "Gargantuan Treeman," the Barrow Legion, and whether we will finally see AoS models officially supported in the Old World. 0:00 - Intro & The New Tomb Kings Reveal 2:41 - Are Skeleton Horses Actually Cool? 5:31 - The Detail on the New Tomb Guard Kits 10:40 - Val's $1,500 Gaming Mat Tariff Nightmare 14:35 - Rob's Insane Doubles Tournament Rules 20:34 - Event Talk: 1-Day vs 2-Day Tournaments 26:03 - What is "The Schism" in Games Workshop? 33:45 - Is The Schism Finally Ending? 41:44 - Horus Heresy & Age of Sigmar Cross-Compatibility 48:09 - Barrow Legions, Treemen & The Future of Legacy Armies 54:09 - Outro & SBOT Tickets MENTIONED IN THIS VIDEO: ► *Links to all current Renegade Drafts* https://docs.google.com/document/d/16kAE-p_CWbsH0XatDPuRao6TngSw-KSweUnJa81kOXE/edit?usp=sharing ► *Rob's Old World EVENTS in Nottingham!* https://tsnarena.com/events/category/the-old-world/ ► *Check out Rob's Event Recaps here!* https://thehonestwargamer.com/ ► Support us on *PATREON* and join us on Discord: https://www.patreon.com/Squarebased *OLD WORLD RESOURCES* ► *Square Based Comp AND Tournament Packs* https://thehonestwargamer.com/warhammer-the-old-world/square-based-comp/ ► *The Square Based FAQ:* https://www.squarebased.com/faqs ► *The Renegade Legacy Pack:* https://www.squarebased.com/ ► *Our 500pt Foray Pack:* https://thehonestwargamer.com/warhammer-the-old-world-500-point-foray/ ► *Old World Army Builder:* https://old-world-builder.com/ ► *Old World Rules Wiki:* https://tow.whfb.app/ ► *Old World Rankings (Past and Upcoming Old World Events:* https://oldworldrankings.com/ *MERCH* https://thehonestwargamer.com/product-category/square-based/ Youtube Music Playlist for Audio Only: https://tinyurl.com/SB-YouTube-Music-Playlist Podcast on all other Platforms: https://squarebasedpodcast.podbean.com/ #squarebased #warhammertheoldworld #warhammerfantasy

The ULTIMATE faction review | Warhammer the Old World | Square Based Show
Rob and Val are back in action, and today we are breaking down the Pros and Cons of EVERY single army in the game! Looking for the best army for starting Warhammer: The Old World, or wondering how your favorite Core and Legacy factions stack up? Whether you're deciding between shiny new plastics for Grand Cathay or throwing down with Renegade armies like Skaven and Vampire Counts, this is the ultimate tabletop wargaming faction guide for you. If you are looking to start a brand new army in 2026, trying to figure out which faction fits your tabletop playstyle, or you just want to listen to Val ruthlessly dunk on the Empire and Dwarfs for three hours, this is the episode for you. We are weighing all Core and Legacy (Renegade) factions looking at: The Models & Hobby Threshold: How hard is it to actually get this army painted and on the tabletop? Are the sculpts elite, or are you going to be painting a hundred tired, shoeless state troops? Phase Effectiveness: Does the army actually play the game across the Movement, Magic, Shooting, and Combat phases, or are you just skipping half your turn? Stability & Psychology: How well does the army handle panic and terror? The "Hero Hammer" Dependency: Can your faction function without a Lord on a Dragon hard-carrying your entire list? Core Tax & Armies of Infamy: Are you forced into bringing bad units, and do you actually have fun, thematic lists to build around? CHAPTERS 0:00 - Intro & Val's Return 3:25 - Warriors of Chaos 30:54 - Lizardmen 52:40 - Grand Cathay 1:08:01 - Ogre Kingdoms 1:21:28 - Empire of Man 1:40:57 - Wood Elf Realms 1:54:34 - Dwarfen Mountain Holds 2:11:30 - Orc & Goblin Tribes 2:30:08 - Tomb Kings of Khemri 2:44:00 - Dark Elves 2:51:21 - Chaos Dwarfs 3:00:36 - High Elf Realms 3:10:16 - Daemons of Chaos 3:18:52 - Kingdom of Bretonnia 3:27:41 - Skaven 3:35:35 - Beastmen Brayherds 3:43:00 - Vampire Counts 3:50:18 - Final Thoughts & Outro ► *Join us at the Square Based Open Toronto October 24 and 25! * https://oldworldrankings.com/ca/tournaments/square-based-open-toronto-2026-sbc MENTIONED IN THIS VIDEO: ► *Links to all current Renegade Drafts* https://docs.google.com/document/d/16kAE-p_CWbsH0XatDPuRao6TngSw-KSweUnJa81kOXE/edit?usp=sharing ► *Rob's Old World EVENTS in Nottingham!* https://tsnarena.com/events/category/the-old-world/ ► *Check out Rob's Event Recaps here!* https://thehonestwargamer.com/ ► Support us on *PATREON* and join us on Discord: https://www.patreon.com/Squarebased *OLD WORLD RESOURCES* ► *Square Based Comp AND Tournament Packs* https://thehonestwargamer.com/warhammer-the-old-world/square-based-comp/ ► *The Square Based FAQ:* https://www.squarebased.com/faqs ► *The Renegade Legacy Pack:* https://www.squarebased.com/ ► *Our 500pt Foray Pack:* https://thehonestwargamer.com/warhammer-the-old-world-500-point-foray/ ► *Old World Army Builder:* https://old-world-builder.com/ ► *Old World Rules Wiki:* https://tow.whfb.app/ ► *Old World Rankings (Past and Upcoming Old World Events:* https://oldworldrankings.com/ *MERCH* https://thehonestwargamer.com/product-category/square-based/ Youtube Music Playlist for Audio Only: https://tinyurl.com/SB-YouTube-Music-Playlist Podcast on all other Platforms: https://squarebasedpodcast.podbean.com/ #squarebased #warhammertheoldworld #warhammerfantasy

The March of Chaos Arcane Journal Review | Warhammer the Old World | Square Based Show
Rob and Val are braving the Storms of Magic to review the brand new Arcane Journal: The March of Chaos for Warhammer: The Old World! The Ruinous Powers are uniting in the Shard Lands, and we are breaking down absolutely everything this packed supplement brings to the tabletop. Tune in to learn about the new modes of play for Magic with Channeling Dice, Arcane Magic, and SORCEROUS RUSES (and a much scarier miscast table). After that we examine the return of the Hordes of Chaos Grand Army and have a look at the new units you can field with it. Finally, we have a look at the massive new list of common magic items that allow you to bring a little bit of wacky chaos energy to any army in Old World. ► *Join us at the Square Based Open Toronto October 24 and 25! * https://oldworldrankings.com/ca/tournaments/square-based-open-toronto-2026-sbc Chapters: TBD MENTIONED IN THIS VIDEO: ► *Links to all current Renegade Drafts* https://docs.google.com/document/d/16kAE-p_CWbsH0XatDPuRao6TngSw-KSweUnJa81kOXE/edit?usp=sharing ► *Rob's Old World EVENTS in Nottingham!* https://tsnarena.com/events/category/the-old-world/ ► *Check out Rob's Event Recaps here!* https://thehonestwargamer.com/ ► Support us on *PATREON* and join us on Discord: https://www.patreon.com/Squarebased *OLD WORLD RESOURCES* ► *Square Based Comp AND Tournament Packs* https://thehonestwargamer.com/warhammer-the-old-world/square-based-comp/ ► *The Square Based FAQ:* https://www.squarebased.com/faqs ► *The Renegade Legacy Pack:* https://www.squarebased.com/ ► *Our 500pt Foray Pack:* https://thehonestwargamer.com/warhammer-the-old-world-500-point-foray/ ► *Old World Army Builder:* https://old-world-builder.com/ ► *Old World Rules Wiki:* https://tow.whfb.app/ ► *Old World Rankings (Past and Upcoming Old World Events:* https://oldworldrankings.com/ *MERCH* https://thehonestwargamer.com/product-category/square-based/ Youtube Music Playlist for Audio Only: https://tinyurl.com/SB-YouTube-Music-Playlist Podcast on all other Platforms: https://squarebasedpodcast.podbean.com/ #squarebased #warhammertheoldworld #warhammerfantasy

NERFS!? BUFFS!? and MASSIVE core rules changes!? | Warhammer the Old World | Square Based Show
It is time! The massive FAQ and Errata for Warhammer: The Old World has finally dropped. Your Tuesday has been completely blown up, and so has ours. We are diving deep into the changes for the Core Rules, Forces of Fantasy, and Ravening Hordes to see exactly what Games Workshop has cooked up for us. *This was a live read and after recording it's come to light that there are few FAQs that, as is tradition, will require further FAQs. These include but aren't limited to: How Regeneration is supposed to work (arguably not how Val describes it), how to Wheel (as written in the FAQ the further you wheel around in one go the less you actually move), and how Cannons interact with Monstrous Creatures and Behemoths (currently the cannon ball automatically stops when Crunch happens, so that means you'd automatically hit a monstrous creature or behemoth on anything but a misfire simply by targeting their base). There are probably others, this game can be complex down in the weeds (for the writers and players alike). We'll be back in another episode to go over the top FAQ about the FAQ.* CHAPTERS 0:00 - Intro: The Massive FAQ is Here! 2:17 - TL;DR: The Biggest Changes (Deathstars, Skirmishers & Regen) 13:25 - Match Play Guide: 50% Unit Cap 15:31 - Core Rules FAQ: Saves, Skirmisher LOS & Beam Spells 20:12 - Core Rules FAQ: Wizards, Wheels & Redressing Ranks 25:34 - Core Rules FAQ: Stand & Shoot + Press of Battle Step-Ups! 30:44 - The Low Linear Obstacle Fix 35:00 - Challenges, Ambushes & Evasive Fleeing 40:16 - Move Through Cover (It's a huge buff!) 41:22 - The Regeneration Saves Deep Dive 45:51 - Skirmisher Arcs, Characters in Ranks & Shooting Characters 50:39 - Cannons vs Hills: How Strike Points Work 1:01:25 - Forces of Fantasy Errata: Poor Dwarfs 1:05:48 - Dispersed Formation (90-Degree Arc for Flyers) 1:06:56 - Empire Errata: Furious Charge & Point Changes 1:13:04 - Bretonnia, Wood Elves & High Elves Errata 1:21:29 - Forces of Fantasy FAQs: Nuln Outriders Nerfed & Orion Buffed 1:31:34 - Ravening Hordes Errata: Orcs & Goblins (Targetable Fanatics!) 1:34:42 - Giants to T7 & Warriors of Chaos Updates 1:40:36 - Beastmen Brayherds: Viletide Nerfed & Dragon Ogre Caps 1:42:51 - Tomb Kings & Arcane Journal FAQs 1:49:48 - Grand Cathay & Final Thoughts: Is the Game Better? The BEST format to start Warhammer the Old World!? | Battle March Arcane Journal Masterclass
Arcane Journal: Battle March is the best way to start playing Warhammer The Old World. But don't be fooled—while this is a small format game it is by no means stripped back. It's packed with detail, narrative flavor, and crunchy mechanics. If you are a "hobby butterfly" who wants to collect multiple factions, or if you're looking to jump into the game without committing to a massive 2,000-point army, this is exactly what you need. In this video, we're breaking down: The Lore Update: Setting the stage in 2275-2276, including Settra's forever war, Frydaal's invasion of the Empire, and Grand Cathay arriving to hold the line. Army Construction: How to build your list with new Battle March restrictions. New Magic Items: Exclusive items for small-format games. Objectives & Scoring: How to win games using Dead or Fled, Treasure Troves (40mm bases), Strategic Landmarks (100mm bases), and everyone's favorite—Baggage Carts! Random Happenings: We look at the insane new D6 tables for Disruptive Weather (Lightning strikes!), Wilderness Terrain (Watch out for the Troll's Lair), and the Chaos of War. Plus, we talk about the featured army lists from the core box and Arcane Journals, and what this means for the future of our Renegade / Legacy faction lists! CHAPTERS 0:00 - Welcome to Battle March! 3:26 - The Lore (Setting the Scene in 2275-2276) 7:35 - Army List Construction & Restrictions (400 - 750 Points) 10:29 - Battle March Exclusive Magic Items 19:30 - Featured Army Lists (Core Box & Arcane Journals) 24:29 - The Renegades & Legacy Army Lists 25:01 - Main Objectives & Scoring Victory Points 30:50 - Secondary Objectives (Raid & Burn + Baggage Carts!) 35:01 - Scenarios, Board Sizes & Setup 37:12 - Random Happenings - Disruptive Weather Table 40:40 - Random Happenings - Wilderness Terrain Table (Troll's Lair!) 43:44 - Random Happenings - The Chaos of War Table 46:56 - Secret Objectives & Final Thoughts MENTIONED IN THIS VIDEO: ► *Links to all current Renegade Drafts* https://docs.google.com/document/d/16kAE-p_CWbsH0XatDPuRao6TngSw-KSweUnJa81kOXE/edit?usp=sharing ► *Rob's Old World EVENTS in Nottingham!* https://tsnarena.com/events/category/the-old-world/ ► *Check out Rob's Event Recaps here!* https://thehonestwargamer.com/ ► Support us on *PATREON* and join us on Discord: https://www.patreon.com/Squarebased *OLD WORLD RESOURCES* ► *Square Based Comp AND Tournament Packs* https://thehonestwargamer.com/warhammer-the-old-world/square-based-comp/ ► *The Square Based FAQ:* https://www.squarebased.com/faqs ► *The Renegade Legacy Pack:* https://www.squarebased.com/ ► *Our 500pt Foray Pack:* https://thehonestwargamer.com/warhammer-the-old-world-500-point-foray/ ► *Old World Army Builder:* https://old-world-builder.com/ ► *Old World Rules Wiki:* https://tow.whfb.app/ ► *Old World Rankings (Past and Upcoming Old World Events:* https://oldworldrankings.com/ *MERCH* https://thehonestwargamer.com/product-category/square-based/ Youtube Music Playlist for Audio Only: https://tinyurl.com/SB-YouTube-Music-Playlist Podcast on all other Platforms: https://squarebasedpodcast.podbean.com/ #squarebased #warhammertheoldworld #warhammerfantasy
