Deconstruction isn't a crisis of faith, it's a process, and it turns out that process has stages. this week jaisa and rachael walk through the five researched stages of faith deconstruction and reconstruction, and share where they've each landed. It starts with the catalyst, the wound or question or piece of biblical history that first makes you pause. then questioning and research, where the anxiety of "is any of this true?" lives. then grief, because deconstruction really does cost you certainty, community, and the version of god you were handed. then deconstruction proper, where you decide what stays and read scripture through the fourfold lens the early church used. and finally reconstruction or release, and the question underneath all of it: what does faith look like when it's chosen, not inherited? Our friend Joash P. Thomas is back on Spirit Outspoken. He's a priest, a public theologian, and the author of The Justice of Jesus, and this conversation goes deep into mysticism, empire, and the parts of church history nobody taught us in Sunday school. We start with Mother Mary. Joash opens up about his own mystical experiences with her, and how becoming open to acknowledging the saints can be such a beautiful, supplemental expansion of our faith. Episode 86: 1493: When the Church Gave Permission for Conquest and Slavery
What if the church didn't just fail to stop white supremacy, it helped build it? In part one of this two-part series, Rachael takes you back to the very beginning. Not the Civil War. Not Jim Crow. 1493. The year the church wrote the theological permission slip for conquest, colonization, and the dehumanization of entire peoples. This episode breaks down three things most Christians were never taught. The Doctrine of Discovery. The papal bulls that gave European Christian nations divine permission to claim any land inhabited by non-Christians. This wasn't fringe theology. It shaped everything that came after. The Curse of Ham. One misread passage in Genesis became the theological engine for chattel slavery. What the text actually says required ignoring the Bible entirely to make the distortion work. The Pro-Slavery Church. Respected, credentialed, mainstream pastors and entire denominations built a sophisticated Bible-based case for slavery. One denomination was founded in 1845 specifically to protect the right of slaveholders. It is still one of the largest in America today. This is not a story about bad people doing bad things. This is about a theological system that was carefully constructed, widely taught, and built into the institutions many of us grew up in. In this episode, Rachael and Jaisa discuss the upcoming Full Moon in Sagittarius on May 31 and why this particular energy may feel especially significant for those in the deconstruction and reconstruction process. Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter, the planet of expansion, truth, questioning, wisdom, and exploration, making this a powerful time to reflect on the beliefs, identities, and narratives people may be outgrowing. They explore how this full moon invites people to stop playing small, seek deeper truth, and honestly examine what is no longer aligned spiritually, emotionally, and personally. For many reevaluating faith, spirituality, or the systems they were raised in, this energy can bring clarity, courage, and a deeper sense of inner knowing. Rachael and Jaisa also discuss how working intentionally with the rhythms of nature, like the moon, is not about worshipping creation, but about using what God already created as a sacred rhythm for reflection, release, prayer, and intentional living. Throughout scripture, the natural world is used as signs, seasons, symbols, and reminders of God’s presence, and for them, this practice simply creates intentional space each month to pause, reflect, release what is no longer serving them, and call in what they hope to cultivate.
