    266/365: Laurie Schneider, Derry City

    Faced with an all too common reality these days, Laurie had to make some risky decisions. The house she was renting with her 3 children in Dublin was being sold. Unless you’ve been lucky enough to live under a rock, you’ll know that the housing crisis is crippling so many people. Dublin became unaffordable for her, so she set her sights on somewhere new. Now, 4 years later, she runs a successful Pilates studio (with her pal Louise) in Derry city. Her children have adjusted to their new schools and college and she feels a little more stable and secure than she did in Dublin.     When Gugai’s Mother held her little newborn son in her arms for the first time, she looked down and said “oh my little Gugai”. Gugai, if you don’t know, means “Little Egg” in Irish. I guess he took this name to heart and you’ll understand once you press play on this episode and hear all about his undying devotion to and absolute fascination with his chickens. Gugai is a music promotor, venue owner and label boss in Galway. Many people know him through music, but we don’t even touch upon tunes in our chat today. It’s all chickens, chickens, chickens.     263/365: Shelly Coen, Inismacateer island, Lough Corrib

    Shelly has led a broad life of travels, moving from country to country. She found her love in Vienna, had a child and returned back to the place she loves most, Ireland. It’s a simple but gorgeous story. She lives on a tiny island in the middle of a lake, where people have boats at the end of their driveways that lead straight into the water. It feels almost eerier like suburban America (or maybe I’ve been watching too many Dawson’s Creek re-runs).     262/365: Jake Reynolds, Wicklow

    Jake’s story will break your heart but it’s an important one to hear. In the last few years, Jake has lost 3 important people in his life. His friend, Paddy, his Brother, Shane and also his Mother. Jake’s Mother is Sinead O’Connor, and while we of course chat about Sinead in this episode, Jake wanted to take this opportunity to shine a light on his brother’s short life. Shane suffered with his mental health and spent time in the foster care system, something that Jake tried his best to pull him out from. I can only imagine the pain that Jake has felt these last few years, dealing with such an enormous amount of grief and loss. In a bid to cope with it all, he has surrounded himself with his beautiful family, in a rural part of Ireland, backed onto a woodland full of nature.     Matthew is a recent addition to the rural West. Like so many, he fell in love with an Irish girl in London. They had a baby and then she heard the call to come home, and Matthew followed.     260/365: Maria Drzazga, Galway

    Maria works in Galway University, surrounded by tall buildings covered in ivy. In true Galway style, it was absolutely pouring with rain when we met for our chat. Originally from Poland, she always had itchy feet and knew she wanted to travel. In the middle of her law degree she took off to go and live and work in a hostel in Buenos Aires. Once she had her travels out of her system, she returned to work in a law firm. One evening, her housemates brought home a lovely Irish man with the intention of setting her up, and sure didn’t they only fall in love, get married and move to Ireland.     I once lived on a tour bus with Murt and 8 other men! We travelled around the world doing hundreds of concerts together. While I dipped in and out of the music industry, Murt has been a roadie his whole life with many amazing bands. To get specific and use his professional title, he's a guitar tech (probably one of the best around). It takes a certain type of person to be able to tour. They need to be smart, confident, adaptable, have a thick skin and also be bit of a buzzer. Murt has it all in spades, especially after a glass of merlot. She is a huge part of their lives and was the little girl who made Cathy “into a Mother”. We chat about what life is like after losing a baby, how perspective shifts, and even friendships change.     252/365: Angela Carney, Co. Mayo

    Angela invited us to her home for the chats. She has a beautiful cottage, surrounded by bog, in very rural Ireland. The fire is on and the tea is flowing. She has created a slow life here, one that’s very far from her previous life. Angela used to run her own very successful vegan food business. It was a triumph and had her up and back to Dublin all the time. It was chaotic and stressful, and something she didn’t really enjoy doing. Along with the business stress, came an addiction relapse. Angela would abuse drugs and alcohol to get her through the days and tried time and time again to break the cycle. It wasn’t until her lowest moments, alone in her cottage, that she would stumble upon meditation and the ability to change your neural pathways. She began researching and practicing until it saved her life. She has since trained as a hypnotherapist and helps other addicts get back to where they need to be. He went out into rural communities, interviewing folk with "the cure”. A rapidly disappearing part of Irish culture.     250/365: Caitriona Gray, Co. Mayo

    Like a lot of people, Covid changed things for Caitriona, but in a really lovely way. Her work went mostly remote, which made her really look at where she was in the world. After great consideration with her husband, they packed up their lives in Dublin, along with their 1 year old, and moved West to open a cafe. She now gets the best of both worlds, occasionally popping up to Dublin for work, taking in the buzz of the city, and then retreating to Louisburgh when she’s had enough. The dream!     249/365: Francis Van Maele, Achill Island

    Francis founded the Red Fox Press book publishing and gallery when he landed in Ireland from Belgium back in 2002. Shortly after he met Antic-Ham and convinced her to also move to Ireland. Together they run the most wonderfully artistic enterprise, publishing art books, taking photos, making screen prints and selling vintage cameras. Francis has the largest collection of polaroid and instant cameras I’ve ever witnessed. Thousands of them, ranging in uses, from dentist cameras to police mugshot cameras.     248/365: Antic-Ham, Achill Island.

    On our travels through the West coast we got wind of a very unique gallery/shop on Achill Island, owned by a couple, Ham and Francis (Francis’ story will follow tomorrow). We walked into Red Fox Press and instantly knew that we were in the right place. The gallery is an analogue dream. It’s filled with hand drawn illustrations, vintage cameras and tiny art books, hundreds of them. Antic-Ham is an artist, illustrator, photographer and publisher. When she’s not greeting customers in the shop, she’s out the back, hand sewing book bindings or painting her unique style of imagery. She’s an extremely warm and friendly woman, with a smile that spreads across her face when she talks about Francis.     247/365: Miriam Byrne, Achill, Co Mayo

    If you ever need to feel the sunshine in Achill, visit Miriam. She's a salt of the earth Dub who came from Crumlin to reconnect with the Irish language. She sold up her business and found a derelict house in the Wild West that she breathed life into once again. Part of her day to day now is doing a bit of community outreach. She acts like a point of contact for anyone who might be feeling a bit lonely or isolated (which I imagine could be a lot of folk in the summer months). When she's not out chatting, she's utilizing every second of her life.
