S02E18 Erasure 'Chorus'
Continuing in the 'pop' vein for a minute, this week we're listening to Erasure's album 'Chorus' which came out in October of 1991. Neither of us were familiar with this one at all so it was very new and fresh all round. But did we enjoy it? Is it all as good as the classics we knew like 'A Little Respect' and 'Stop'? We shall have to see. And this week we get the chance to chat about other stuff like Teenage Fanclub, Slayer and Carcass so there's definitely some guitar music mixed in for good measure. S02E17 Simply Red 'Stars'
Or lordy, it's only Hucknall and co. Leading up to this episode we were pretty sure we were going to hate this album as it was the antithesis of everything we liked in 1991, so what do we reckon on giving it a go in 2019? S02E16 Nirvana 'Nevermind' Bonus Episode
We KNOW! Stop shouting at us - yes it's another bonus episode on an album that wasn't actually ever number one, but how could we NOT? This album meant an awful lot to both Dave and Krister on their musical journeys and so they revisit it to talk about how important it is but also to see if it stands up as a full album nearly 30 years later. It's not too much of a spoiler to say that they're both very pleased with this re-listen. And since it's a bonus episode there isn't a playlist this week for, just go and listen to your copy of Nevermind along with us. You know you've got one. Oh, and turn it up fucking loud.

S02E15 Bryan Adams 'Waking Up The Neighbours'
The most Canadian thing to happen to our podcast to date, this episode is all about Bryan Adams' 1991 megahit 'Waking Up The Neighbours' which does indeed feature THAT song. Does the rest of the record stand up against such a world-beating single? Would you want it to? We should probably point out that we do make a few jokes in this one at the expense of Canadians but we don't mean it. We love you really. Please don't write us any angry letters. S02E14a Guns & Roses 'Use Your Illusion II'
Dave's been looking forward to this one for weeks - G'n'R are one of his favourite bands of all time and he played this album over and over in his youth so he's got LOTS to say about it. Krister had never heard it before now and only really knows the big tunes off 'Appetite For Destruction' so he was pretty nervous going into this one. Will it be as good as Dave remembers? Will it be as bad as Krister fears? Amidst all the discussion of why Axl Rose is such a dickhead sometimes we manage to fit in chat about Soundgarden, Rozalla and Prince as well. S02E13 Dire Straits 'On Every Street'
After the all-conquering monolith that was 'Brothers In Arms', Dire Straits returned in 1991 with the long-awaited follow-up 'On Every Street'. So is it as good? Did it spawn another groundbreaking cartoon video of removal men carrying fridges? The answer to at least one of those questions is "no". But while talking about it we do get the chance to chat about other things such as Marky Mark & the Funky Bunch, Mr Bungle's first album and finding out that NIN's 'Pretty Hate Machine' came out two years before Dave thought it did. Mind BLOWN. S02E12 Metallica 'Metallica'
Oh boy, this is a big one! Dave is a huge Metallica fan already and Krister likes a lot of the big tunes but how will he get on with the full album? Is it as good today as Dave remembers from when he was a teenager? I mean, probably, yeah. Listen as we discuss whether Metallica ripped another band off for 'Enter Sandman'; is Kid Rock's use of the 'Sad But True' sample a legally punishable crime; is that REALLY an actual song about turning into a werewolf? S02E10 Seal 'Seal'
After two (quite self-indulgent, we know) episodes which weren't strictly about number one albums of the 90s we are back on track with a listen to Seal's debut self-titled album which was number one for three weeks in mid 1991. We both remember and like the single 'Crazy' - will the rest of the album hold some previously unknown (to us) delights? We shall see. While we're here we also talked about Skid Row, Type O Negative and the infamous second NWA album in quite some depth. Oh, and Crystal Bastard Waters as well. S02E09a Bonus Episode Part One - Eurythmics Greatest Hits and Primus 'Sailing The Seas Of Cheese'
We know, we know - we're not supposed to do episodes on Greatest Hits or compilations but the Eurythmics album was number one for ten weeks in total and during that time two of our very favourite albums were released so we thought we'd take the chance to bend the rules and put out a couple of bonus episodes to wax lyrical about them. This week you'll hear us talking about Eurythmics (albeit quite briefly) and then you'll hear us going on at length about one of Dave's favourite albums, Primus's 'Sailing The Seas Of Cheese'. He chooses five tracks from it as a sampler which we have a listen to and discuss. We also have a talk about loads of other really great albums that came out in this ten week period of 1991 - it's genuinely an exciting time for music so please forgive us as we get excited about things that we love. S02E08 R.E.M. 'Out Of Time'
HOLD THE PHONE. Has 1991 finally given us what could actually be described as a 'classic album'? Well, both Dave and Krister remember it fondly and it's certainly touted as a classic but does it stand up to scrutiny nearly 30 years later? We shall see. The conversation takes us down the usual strange pathways making mention of the likes of Chesney Hawkes and Megadeth and we also see Dave making a comparison between one of the REM songs and a certain Kenny Loggins tune - is he right or just mental? S02E06 Chris Rea 'Auberge'
Do you like slide guitar? Do you like racing cars? Do you like a man who sounds like he smokes 60 a day, every day? Then have we got a treat for you! Next in line for our listening pleasure is 'Auberge' by Chris Rea which was number one in March 1991 for one week only. However, not to get all clickbaity on you but what you hear in this week's episode may surprise you. It certainly surprised us. Alongside Mr Rea we discuss the likes of Ice Cube, The Eagles and FishMonkeyMan. Don't pretend you don't remember FishMonkeyMan. Come on now. We do also have to apologise for playing what is probably one of the worst songs of 1991, if not the whole decade - sometimes being for charity just isn't enough of an excuse. Remember Oleta Adams, from back in 1991? Of course not. Remember her song though, the big hit? No? It was called 'Get Here'? There you go, now you're on board. Well it turns out she has an album that got to number one for one week in February 1991 so we had to listen to the whole thing. S02E03 Jesus Jones 'Doubt'
Welcome to episode three of our new season and enjoy taking a step back in terms of audio quality for one week because we recorded this one out of sequence, before we upgraded our microphones. Hurray! But ignore that if you can as we are joined by our first ever GUEST on the podcast, Si Sharp, to delve into the guts of Jesus Jones' album 'Doubt' from February 1991. Si is an expert on many musical topics and genres but has a special place in his heart for this particular sort of indie stuff, it's what he grew up on and loved dearly. S02E01 Enigma 'MCMXC AD'
We are back after our break with a new season and a new year's worth of number one albums to listen to. 1991 kicks off with Enigma's debut album and it definitely makes a big impression on Dave and Krister as you will hear. You may also hear that the sound quality has improved a bit and we no longer sound like we're recording in a bucket in a field. Or at the very least, a better quality bucket. Hurrah for new equipment. As well as discussing Enigma and why you'd want to listen to monks chanting over a breakbeat we also chat about Gang Starr, Robert Palmer and C&C Music Factory.
