S04E06 - Bonus Episode! Monster Magnet ’Superjudge’
Time to get spaced out and explore the world of Monster Magnet's 1993 album 'Superjudge' as requested by one of our listeners. Basically he made a big enough donation to the show via our PayPal that we couldn't say no but luckily we didn't actually want to because we both love a bit of Monster Magnet. So indulge us chatting about a load of stoner rock and big weird riffs, psychedelic nonsense and lyrics that run the gamut from having sex with the Andromeda Galaxy to becoming an ape. Nope, not a clue. Normal service will be resumed for our next episode but this one was a lot of fun for us to do, hope you enjoy it as well. S04E05 Suede 'Suede'
We are back after a short break to have a look at what the big deal was about Suede's debut, self-titled album which was released in April 1993. Krister remembers really liking those big three first singles while Dave remembers actively hating the band and all they stood for when he was an angry 17 year old. We also get the chance to chat about Tool, David Essex and Jade in the course of the show which must surely be the first time those three have ever been in the same sentence. And we really must thank Stephen and Remfry from the brilliant Riot Act podcast for letting us join them on their 90s One Hit Wonders special episode - we've seen loads of new listeners come on board after hearing us on there so we hope you enjoy what we're doing as well! In this episode we get to talk about Depeche Mode AGAIN which is always fun - after our special on 'Violator' in season one how will this fare in comparison? We have invited a very special guest to discuss it with us, the wonderful comedian/podcaster/DJ/general music nerd Rich Wilson. As you'll be able to tell, we had a lot of fun recording this one. S04E03 Lenny Kravitz 'Are You Gonna Go My Way'
THAT RIFF! THAT STYLE! THOSE FLARES! With Lenny Kravitz's 'Are You Gonna Go My Way' we may be checking out an album from 1993 but it's one that was trying to sound like it was from 1970 in the first place so buckle up for double time-travelling. Krister had never heard the whole album before and Dave only had the vaguest of memories of it so we went in pretty blind, hoping for a sea of big guitar rock and Hendrix-style solos all over the place but found something much more calm and reigned-in which was very unexpected. But we also get to chat about Naughty By Nature, Right Said Fred (and a potential name for a tribute act) and Mark Lanegan. S04E02B East 17 Addendum Bonus
Just a quickie here - it was pointed out to us after we released our 'Walthamstow' episode that the version of 'It's Alright' that we talked about (and the one that everyone knows) wasn't the original version that was on the first release of the album. We then listened to the original version and decided it was so terrible that we really should make all of you listen to it as well. S04E02 East 17 ’Walthamstow’
Get out your stupid hats and prepare to be "sung" at by a load of teenagers from East London. Yes, it's been a while since we've done a full on 'pop' album but here we are with one of the biggest boy bands in the UK in the 90s and their debut album 'Walthamstow'. Containing their hits 'Deep', 'House Of Love' and 'It's Alright' as well as quite a lot of utter nonsense, we dig in to see how this bad boy sounds 30 years after release. It's quite something. But as well as marvelling at how East 17 maintained a career we discuss bands like Dinosaur Jnr and Belly; Dave effuses about one of his all time favourite albums 'Slip' by Quicksand; and Krister reveals that he still has absolutely no idea how to pronounce Einsturzende Neubauten. S04E01 Little Angels 'Jam'
WHAT THE HECK? Yes indeed, it's the first episode of Season 4! We've finished with the music of 1992 and are casting it off like a bootleg T-shirt that you bought outside the gig but then lost all of its backprint and one of its sleeves after just one wash. And here we are looking down the barrel of a very exciting 1993 with so many amazing bands and new genres appearing almost weekly, a brand new world. So obviously we're starting this journey off with Little Angels and their album 'Jam' which it turns out, no really, got to number one in January 1993. I know. It's a band and a genre that both of us thoroughly ignored at the time so neither of us had any clue what this was going to sound like - well I mean, that's not strictly true but you know what we mean. But along the way we do get to chat about other bands like Apache Indian, Jesus Jones and The The so that's always a treat. Another bonus for you to wrap up season three - this week we're doing a listener's choice of Sugar's 1992 debut album 'Copper Blue'. Both Dave and Krister remember this from the time but haven't revisited it in many years so it's all very fresh to our ears. S03E20 BONUS EPISODE - Mr Bungle 'Mr Bungle'
We're back with a very special bonus episode and you can interpret "special" any way you want. At the behest of a podcast listener who donated a far too generous amount of money to our paypal link we are covering an album of his choosing. It's possible he chose this particular one because he is a massive fan and knows that Dave is as well or it's possible that he knows how much Krister was likely to absolutely hate it. Who knows, it's a proper mystery. Either way we hope you enjoy listening to us discuss this one but since the album is definitely an acquired taste and the episode is easily one of our most self-indulgent ones to date we won't mind if you skim this one or have to give up before the end. S03E19 ABBA 'Gold'
Merry Christmas! Ho Ho Ho! Etc! Welcome to our festive themed special all about ABBA 'Gold', their Greatest Hits which was released in 1992 and became one of the best selling albums of all time. We've got a very special guest helping us out on this one in the form of comedian Sean McLoughlin who is a big ABBA fan, as is Krister. However, Dave fucking hates ABBA. Like really hates them. So we decided to do this special and take on the forms of Christmas joybringers, trying to convince Dave that he's just being an ABBA grinch and should let them into his life at this time of goodwill and wonder. How successful we were in that task, you'll find out soon enough. Massive thanks once again to Sean for joining us on this one, it was an absolute treat to have him on, he's genuinely one of the funniest comics around today so do check him out when live gigs start happening again. In the meantime you can hear his comedy album 'Support Act' on Spotify and watch his hour long special 'Hail Mary' on Youtube. Honestly, we cannot say enough good things about this guy and we hope you enjoy him on this episode as much as we did recording it with him. Well we've done all of the UK number one albums of 1992 so as is now customary we're rounding up this season with a two-part episode of our own choices of what we reckon the best albums released that year were. Or our personal favourites at least - some of our choices probably wouldn't make any other proper Best Of list. We've also invited some special guests to drop in with their favourites - on this episode you'll hear from: Andy Copping, the man who runs Download Festival and has been booking live acts in the UK for more years than we care to imagine; Rich Wilson, stand-up comedian and the podcaster behind the Insane In The Men Brain and Insane In The Fem Brain podcasts; and Carla & Zoe from Number One Rerun podcast who are another pair of podcasters looking back at pop culture from the past who love a terrible joke just as much as we do. We also asked our listeners for their top five lists before we recorded this episode and we've put up all the submissions we got on our website so you can see the sort of stuff that everyone else is into. S03E17 Bon Jovi 'Keep The Faith'
It's Bon Jovi's big return after their 80s heyday - Jon Bon Jovi has cut off his big hair and the band has decided to go for a "more mature" sound in this post-grunge world of 1992. Great. Dave was a big fan of these guys in the 80s while Krister was a lot more ambivalent and had never heard this album before listening for the show. But in between talking about Bon Jovi's more grown-up attitude and divergence from their poodle-pomp reputation we get the chance to mention albums by Ice Cube and Dr Dre and singles by the likes of Charles & Eddie, Wrexxx n Effect and U2 among many others. S03E16 Bonus Episode - Rage Against The Machine S/T
Yes yes yes, we know that this was never a number one UK album and therefore it doesn't fit our remit, but our podcast, our rules. Both Dave and Krister are such big fans of this album that we decided to do a full bonus episode on it to give it the props it deserves. And not only that but we were lucky enough to persuade the legendary man behind Download Festival, Andy Copping to come and talk to us about his recollections of the album coming out back in 1992 and all the times he's put the band on from his days of booking gigs at Nottingham Rock City up to getting them to headline Download in 2010. We've included about half of the full chat in this episode but we'll put the whole thing out by itself in a couple of days so that you can hear all of Andy's thoughts and stories. S03E15 Prince 'Love Symbol'
We are back with a much more frivolous and light-hearted episode than our previous one so you can expect many more smutty jokes and terrible puns throughout alongside our usual incisive music knowledge and expertise. Ahem. This week we are listening to and chatting about Prince's 'Love Symbol' album which Dave has vague memories of from back in 1992 and Krister has definitely never heard before in his life. And because it's Prince, and you can't tell him what to do, there are 18 tracks on the album across about 50 different genres. So plenty to get stuck into, alongside the whole thing about it being a rock opera soundtrack to another flopped Prince movie. We do also get the chance to talk about things like Madonna, Temple of The Dog and that awful rave version of the Tetris music so there's something to look forward to. S03E14 REM 'Automatic For The People'
Well this is a massive album and deserves a lot of time devoted to it, so we did. Fair warning - there are some subjects touched upon in our discussion that might be a bit too much for some people; the album itself is all about death, mortality, suicide, pain, grief etc and so we talk about our own issues and experiences with such things so if you think this might be a bit too heavy for what is normally quite a jaunty podcast with too many jokes about farts and dicks then we understand if you want to skip it. But there are also a load of stupid things we talk about as well in amongst the more heavy bits. Just so you know. We do also get the chance to talk about other bands such as The Prodigy, Suede and the Jesus Lizard so that's something to get your teeth into as well. S03E13 Mike Oldfield 'Tubular Bells II'
It was 1992, a time of musical turbulence and experimentation, when new and exciting bands were cutting through the dead weeds of a changing music industry and forever leaving their mark on a brave new world. So what better time for Mike Oldfield to have a number one album with his long-awaited sequel to 1973's original 'Tubular Bells'. We had no idea what to expect from this one, as you'll find out pretty much straight away, but we were definitely interested to see what made it such a big deal upon release. Along the way we also chat about the likes of The Shamen, Brand New Heavies and Skid Row among other people in the charts at the time. Special Download Festival Episode
Because no festivals are happening this year Dave and Krister wanted to have a very quick chat about some of their favourite times from previous years at Download watching some of the best rock and metal bands of the 90s. This is just a one-off special, totally fine if you want to skip two middle aged men reminisce about getting drunk in a field and loving live music. Also, this was recorded over Zoom using that audio output so the sound quality is slightly lower than usual. The quality of the chat is its usual rubbishness though, that's not changed.
