3 Secrets of Community Building -- by Seth Resler

This episode is not a mastermind discussion. I've edited down a presentation we had with Seth Resler about building Community. Building Community is not necessarily something a Podcast Editor does, but this could be another feather in your skillz cap. For example: Many of Steve Stewart's clients aren't creating podcasts for ad revenue - they're building their brand and a community behind their niche or their mission. Success is found there! At the end, Steve shares how community changes his life and opened the door to a new career in a medium we all love! Key moments: (00:00) From Audience to Community (01:46) The ROI Challenge in Podcasting (08:33) Secret #1: Rules Are Different for Community vs Audience (17:17) Secret #2: The right 100 people beats the wrong 10,000 (24:42) Secret #3: Community is more sustainable than Audience (39:14) Join Podcast Editor Communities Core Lessons: Distinguish between audience and community. An audience consumes content one-way, while a community fosters peer-to-peer relationships within a shared space. Prioritize the right members over large numbers. Thoughtful exclusion ensures the group remains aligned with a specific mission, increasing the value of every interaction. Create a container, not just an engine. Build a space where members contribute and support one another, reducing the creator’s burden to constantly produce new content. Focus on ROI through community-led revenue. Direct monetization includes charging for access or connecting sponsors with a niche group, while indirect benefits include better retention and product insights. Avoid community vanity. Only build a community when a clear mission exists that benefits the members, rather than simply checking a box for growth metrics. Finding a New Job in Podcast Production, with Carrie Caulfield

#127: Carrie Caulfield is back to give a behind-the-scenes look at what it actually takes to grow beyond "just" editing. She talks about how she went from editing simple interview shows to landing a major role with the Legal Media Network—all sparked by a note in the Podcast Editors Club Facebook group with a pitch. Carrie didn’t wait until she felt “ready.” Instead, she kept saying yes to opportunities, learning as she went, and building her confidence through experience rather than formal training. As her career progressed, she naturally moved beyond editing into storytelling, production, and eventually leadership. Now, she’s overseeing large-scale operations, managing teams, and helping shape content for hundreds of clients. Through it all, she keeps coming back to the same idea: growth comes from being willing to figure things out, even when you’re unsure. Her journey is a reminder that skills build on each other, and if you stay curious and open to stretching yourself, you can turn a small starting point into something much bigger. Key moments: Carrie secured her current role by proactively pitching herself She transitioned into narrative storytelling and full-scale production work Her experience shows that editing skills can evolve into broader storytelling and leadership capabilities She now oversees production for nearly 200 clients, managing teams, workflows, and content strategy A major success factor has been willingness to learn on the fly and take on challenges without waiting for formal training Resources mentioned in the show: Carrie Caulfield, Director of Production, The Legal Media Network @TheCarrieCaulfield (IG, Threads) https://carriecaulfield.notion.site Our Editor for this episode: This episode of the Podcast Editors Mastermind was edited by Alejandro Ramirez. The Ultimate Guide to Podcast Chapters, with Daniel J. Lewis

#122: Are Podcast Chapters a good thing? Most people would say "Of course they are". Steve has reservations, mostly because chapters help listeners more easily skip ads, and that's not a good thing for clients who have ads in their show. However, Podcast Chapters are useful. And very cool...especially when you hear about what can be done with Chapter Images (see chapter #11 of this episode)! In our conversation with Daniel J. Lewis, we talk through all the ins and outs of podcast chapters, their benefits, and how they can transform your client's show into a more interactive experience for your audience. Key takeaways: Podcast chapters enhance navigation and engagement They allow for additional multimedia elements, enriching the listener experience Properly structured chapters can improve retention and manage ad placements effectively Key Moments (aka: Chapters): (00:00) Daniel J.
