S2 E5 - Exploring aesthetics, Aphrodite and being perceived (ew)
WE ARE BACK! Yes yes I know I said I’d get back into regular podcasting, but I still haven’t got the balance right! I’m hoping I’ll be back on the bandwagon very soon. In this episode I chat a little about where I’ve been, before moving onto discuss my own personal journey combining aesthetics with Aphrodite work. I speak about how Aphrodite pushes us to consider our own connection to visibility and being perceived, as well as owning the “downsides” to magic, witchcraft, and “achieving” the work we have set out to do - including with this particular work, understanding the sexualisation of my own body & clothing, past and present. Dressing in ways that make me feel confident and powerful, on one hand helps me to heal my visibility wound, and on the other, DOES inherently attract more danger and attention I don’t want. I also speak about my own journey understanding my gender, and the difference between my gender and how I physically present to the world. S2 E2: Queering Aphrodite - Aphrodite as a Queer & Trans Icon
How is Aphrodite linked with queerness and transness? How can we explore the Goddess of Love through a queer lens, exploring Her history and mythology with a specific eye to how She subverts gender norms, challenges heteronormativity, and how queerness is distilled through all that She is. In this episode, I chat about my own journey with understanding my queerness and my non-binary identity through my work with Aphrodite, and then we dive into how Aphrodite could be linked to these themes: through Sappho’s connection to Her, through the history of one of Her spiritual predecessors, Inanna, and through Aphrodite’s depiction as Aphroditos, a “male” version of the Goddess. I also chat about Her child, Hermaphroditus, and Her lover Adonis, who could also be read as non-binary (more on that in the episode!). This episode hopes to serve as aN introductory resource for folks looking to connect to these lesser known and spoken about aspects of Aphrodite, from a witchcraft and spiritual perspective.
