    Climate change research at IBAHCM

    Leading up to the COP26 UN Climate Change Conference, which will be held in Glasgow between October 31 and November 12, 2021, the Naturally Speaking team felt it was only fitting to highlight some of the brilliant climate change-related research going on within the Institute of Biodiversity, Animal Health and Comparative Medicine. In this podcast, Naturally Speaking’s Taya Forde and Joey Humble are joined by a panel of our researchers to hear about the varied studies going on within the Institute in this area.     Episode 80 – A bird in the hand

    In our latest interview, Joey Humble and Taya Forde chat with Paul Baker – a Lecturer in Biological and Biomedical Sciences from Glasgow Caledonian University and self-described ‘twitcher’ (or ‘birdwatcher’ for those who don’t know the lingo!). In fact, Paul now works on several bird monitoring projects connected with the University of Glasgow. Tune in to learn why bird ringing is still a vital tool for modern ornithology, how this type of research can uncover larger population trends, and just how to tell your house sparrows from your tree sparrows. With both UK sparrow species now on the Red List of conservation concern, Paul also explains why, now more than ever, we need these types of research projects.     Episode 79- Biodiversity on campus

    Ever wondered who plants the wildflowers on campus? Or how many species you might spot on a walk around Glasgow? In this episode, Naturally Speaking’s Emma Plant and Alexa Roditi interview not one, but three guests in a roundtable discussion about wildlife on campus. Agnes Berner, the biodiversity coordinator of Glasgow University’s Environmental Sustainability Team (GUEST), and Dr Lydia Bach tell us all about the different initiatives going on across the university to promote biodiversity, and how staff and students can do their own bit to help out. Dr Stewart White, Chair of the Biodiversity Working Group, also joins us to discuss why these initiatives are so important from a research perspective. It turns out there are lots of interesting creatures and critters to be found if you know where to look – check out some of the projects and links below if you want to add your own sightings to the effort and help promote biodiversity on campus.     Episode 78 – Exmoor ponies join the University of Glasgow

    Efforts to return Scotland’s land to a more natural state could be spurred on by an unlikely helper: an independent, hardy and terribly cute breed of horse, the Exmoor pony. In this podcast, Naturally Speaking’s Joey Humble interviews PhD student Debbie Davy, a guardian and advocate for the Exmoor pony, who has recently introduced a herd to Cochno farm, a University owned site close to Glasgow. Here we learn a bit about the history, ecology and genetics of this breed. Exmoor ponies are native to the UK and although in modern times they were only found in Exmoor (South-west England), it is believed by many that their kin were widespread throughout all of the UK in ancient times. Without need of horseshoes, stables or assisted foaling, Exmoor ponies truly are a feral breed which could help promote biodiversity through their love of coarse vegetation.     Episode 75 – Killing them softly

    Killing them softly The welfare of farm animals is an issue very much in the public eye. While we often think about welfare in terms of animals’ quality of life, a less-considered aspect is the quality of death. In this episode, University of Glasgow researcher Dr Dorothy McKeegan tells us about her research in this area, which aims to ensure that the slaughter of animals for human consumption is done in the very best way possible. During this podcast, we mention the 3Rs prize (Replacement, Reduction and Refinement of use of animals for research) of the Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Body. The winners of this prize were: Seonagh Henderson, senior research support/animal health technician at the University of Glasgow, for her development of a sifting cage change method to improve welfare in laboratory rats. The concept was to remove the stress involved when transferring the rats to a clean cage, allowing them to be reintroduced into a ‘clean’, faeces-free cage that still retained their own scent. The results from this change in handling were fast and effective: the rats went from being nervous and difficult to handle to being more placid and naturally inquisitive. Correction: this recipient was incorrectly named in the interview. Prof Sue Barnett & Dr Susan Lindsay for their project “The use of cultures to study the repair of the central nervous system”. This is a tissue culture system that could allow spinal cord injuries to be studied in vitro, without the requirement of animal models.     Episode 74- Falkland foxes

    In this episode of Naturally Speaking, Mar Pineda catches up with fellow Masters of Research (MRes) student Bugge Vick to talk about some of his field work. Bugge’s research project focused on the South American grey fox (Lycalopex griseus), recently introduced onto the Falkland Islands – a remote archipelago in the South Atlantic. In this podcast, he tells us about his experience participating in population counts, and collecting scat (faecal samples) to study the fox’s diet.     Episode 73 – A genomic approach to conservation

    Species at being lost at an alarming rate around the world. Luckily, there are large-scale efforts underway to document and utilize population genetic diversity for species conservation. In this episode, we are joined by Dr Klaus-Peter Koepfli, a research scientist from the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute’s Center for Species Survival and visiting speaker within the Institute of Biodiversity, Animal Health & Comparative Medicine. Dr Koepfli tells us about the field of ‘conservation genomics’, and how documenting the genetic diversity of animals in zoos and game ranches can help protect some of the world’s most endangered species.     Episode 72 – An EPIC Undertaking

    We hope that the UK will never see another major livestock disease outbreak such as foot and mouth disease or avian influenza. But if we do, we will be much better prepared to deal with it thanks to EPIC, the Centre of Expertise on Animal Disease Outbreaks. This interdisciplinary group of researchers from several Scottish institutions, including researchers from the Institute of Biodiversity, Animal Health & Comparative Medicine, use a range of approaches to understand and mitigate disease spread to inform policy on control strategies, e.g. using animal movement data to simulate how an introduced disease would likely spread under various scenarios.     Episode 69 – SalmoSim: The creation of an artificial salmon gut

    The aquaculture industry is growing at a rapid rate, but our understanding of the factors that contribute to fish ‘performance’ – that is, how to ensure optimal health and growth – is not keeping pace. Rather than conduct costly field experiments, researchers at the Institute of Biodiversity, Animal Health & Comparative Medicine are taking a different approach. Join us as we speak to Dr Martin Llewellyn and PhD candidate Raminta Kazlauskaite about their project SalmoSim, in which they have developed an artificial salmon gut. While it sounds like something out of Franken-fish, they see this system being used for a range of applications, from studying drug stability, to the effects of pre- and pro-biotics on the microbiome, to antimicrobial resistance transfer, and ultimately to differences in fish performance through the use of different feeds.     Podcast Series: The RRS Discovery – Episode 2

    Episode 2: What lies beneath? Join us again aboard the Royal Research Ship Discovery, cruising towards the mid-Atlantic to an area known as the Charlie-Gibbs Fracture Zone. As we heard in the previous episode, this unique cruise brought together researchers from multiple disciplines to apply their specialist skills to collect data in the region. In this episode we hear from scientists bridging the gap between the physical oceanography, the chemistry and primary production, and the ecological roles of cephalopod molluscs. Far from land in the mid-Atlantic. Photo: Julie Miller We begin by hearing from Dr. Igor Belkin, our onboard Oceanographer. Igor talks us through the physical features of the ocean and in particular one of his passions, ocean fronts. Fronts – where two water masses meet – play an important role both in regulating Earth’s climate and in nutrient cycling. Which leads us on to our next team of scientists. Oceanographic satellite maps with the Discovery route in red. Credit: Igor Belkin Dr. Tom Browning and Ali Al-Hashem from GEOMAR worked around the clock in the ship’s laboratories. Their aim: to collect samples of water continually as we cruised. Tom and Ali are interested in the nutrient content of the region. Nutrient availability in the ocean is a limiting factor in the growth of algae (phytoplankton), an indicator of primary productivity and a foundational food source for other organisms further up the food-chain. Ali is also interested in looking at the chemical signature of the guano of seabirds the seabird team catch. Vlad tells us about the importance of cephalopods in the oceans, particularly deep-sea squids, their role in nutrient cycling, and their importance in the diets of apex predators.     Episode 66: The secret life of the Zoology Museum

    This podcast celebrates the past, present and future of the Hunterian Zoology Museum located in the Graham Kerr Building at the University of Glasgow. And who better than our Museum’s specialist curator to reveal the life and times of this majestic place? In this Naturally Speaking episode, Maggie Reilly tells Naturally Speaking editor Martina Quaggiotto all about the history of our Zoology Museum – from its creation in 1923 by architect John Burnet supervised by Professor Sir Graham Kerr, to its current role in providing an invaluable resource for both teaching and research at the University of Glasgow. The collection, which started with William Hunter’s personal specimens, now comprises around 600,000 specimens. It is a great showcase for the animal world – including existing and extinct species – and highlights its diversity. While recent efforts to control mosquitoes have been very successful in reducing malaria, particularly insecticide-treated bed nets, mosquito populations seem to be persisting. In this episode of Naturally Speaking, editors Ellen Hughes and Taya Forde are joined by Institute researcher Prof Heather Ferguson, along with her long-time collaborator, Dr Nico Govella of Ifakara Health Institute, Tanzania.     Podcast Series: The RRS Discovery – Episode 1

    Episode 1: The Charlie-Gibbs Fracture Zone On the 6th June 2017, an international team of scientists led by Dr. Ewan Wakefield departed Southampton on the Royal Research Ship Discovery. Their cruise number was DY080 and their aim was to gather multiple data from an area in the mid-Atlantic where the Charlie-Gibbs Fracture Zone (CGFZ) interrupts the mid-Atlantic ridge between the Azores and Iceland. In this area, polar and southern waters meet and form a perennial but moving front. Major fronts of the world’s oceans support relatively high levels of primary and secondary production and tend to be important foraging hotspots for wide-ranging higher predators, such as pelagic seabirds. Ewan and colleagues observed that tracking data highlighted the sub-Polar Front of the North Atlantic as a potentially important area for both migratory and locally-breeding seabirds. In particular, the complex region of the sub-polar front south of the CGFZ, where the North Atlantic Current crosses the mid-Atlantic ridge, is targeted by seabirds from multiple populations. In addition, a small but growing body of evidence suggests that other wide-ranging taxa, including cetaceans, tuna and marine turtles, also aggregate south of the CGFZ. As evidence from tracking data mounts, Bird Life International is preparing to submit a proposal to OSPAR to designate this area as an Important Bird Area. Despite these advances in tracking data, very few direct observations have been made of higher predators in the CGFZ. As a result there is a lack of information on predator distribution, abundance and diet – information that is necessary for effective management and protection. Observational evidence would also serve to address fundamental ecological questions, such as how oceanic higher predators partition niches, how they connect disparate ecosystems and how these processes are affected by climate change. In this episode, we hear from PSO (Principal Scientific Officer) Dr. Ewan Wakefield and Marguerite Tarzia representing Birdlife International on the cruise.
