John Stossel on Odysee

John Stossel

After 40+ years of reporting, I now understand the importance of limited government and personal freedom.

------------------------------------------
Libertarian journalist John Stossel is a zealous advocate of free markets, a syndicated columnist and Fox News contributor. Prior to joining Fox, John co-anchored ABC’s primetime newsmagazine show, 20/20.

Stossel’s economic programs have been adapted into teaching kits by a non-profit organization, "Stossel in the Classroom." High school teachers in American public schools now use the videos to help educate their students on economics and economic freedom. They are seen by more than 12 million students every year.

Stossel has received 19 Emmy Awards and has been honored five times for excellence in consumer reporting by the National Press Club. Other honors include the George Polk Award for Outstanding Local Reporting and the George Foster Peabody Award.

Ep. 48 The Case for Economic Freedom: Why Governments Often Make Prosperity Harder

Politicians always want to “improve” our economy. But again and again, they make things worse. “The more we move away from free markets, the worse things become” says economist Don Boudreaux, author of “The Triumph of Economic Freedom."Boudreaux explains how government intervention made the Great Depression last longer, caused the Great Recession, and more.He also debunks myths like the "growing gap" between rich and poor:“If you look at the data, that growing gap isn’t growing. That gap is due to a statistical illusion.” In this podcast, we talk about “The Triumph of Economic Freedom" and debunk myths about poverty, AI taking jobs, and the dumb ways politicians claim to “improve" the economy. ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JxZCwps6DZI

UPDATE: Rent Control Fails Again, Politicians Learn Nothing

A few years ago, St Paul, Minnesota passed the strictest rent control in the country. Politicians promised it would "end profiteering." Activists cheered. Here's what really happened. --------------------- To make sure you receive weekly video from Stossel TV, sign up here: https://www.johnstossel.com/#subscribe-form --------------------- "This is such a step backwards," economist Salim Furth of the Mercatus Center told me when the law passed, “it's going to hurt renters!” He was right. Developers fled. New construction fell. Now residents complain, "The lack of housing... it's a crisis." The mayor who once supported the law had second thoughts. Now, St Paul's city council has voted to loosen the law. I'd think other politicians would learn from St Paul's failure. But no, my socialist mayor just froze rent on a million apartments in New York City! Above, we cover how rent control failed in St Paul, and why New York will be next. ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZ-fFbdf9hw

Net Zero Is Dying: Blackouts, High Costs & the Politicians and CEOs Who Quietly Changed Their Minds.

We were told climate change is an “existential” threat. So governments everywhere pledged to go net-zero and stop increasing emissions. It didn't work. --------- To make sure you receive weekly video from Stossel TV, sign up here: https://www.johnstossel.com/#subscribe-form ———— Net-zero was pushed again and again. President Biden pledged the USA would go net-zero by 2050. Obama bragged about how, “700 cities in more than 50 countries have pledged to reach net-zero.” For a while it seemed like that might happen. Some European countries claimed to get 60% of their power from renewables. But then they faced soaring energy costs and blackouts. “The power outages are the starkest illustration of bad electricity policy,” says energy expert Alex Epstein. “But you can avoid power outages with these bad policies. What you can't avoid is scarcity and rationing and poverty.” In the video above we break down those consequences, explain why net-zero fails, and cover the governments (and businesses) walking back their net-zero push. ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cj0r-huZlpY

UPDATE: Why Colleges Are Bringing the SAT Back (and Why Woke Schools Banned It)

Did you know the SAT is racist? Years ago, claims of racism led MOST colleges to stop requiring the test. Now, 5 years later, the SAT is making a comeback. _ _ _ _ _ _ To make sure you receive weekly videos from Stossel TV, sign up here: https://www.johnstossel.com/#subscribe-form _ _ _ _ _ _ Activists said ditching the test "would allow more students to be accepted into a wider range of colleges." Sounds nice. But in reality: “It’s about making these campuses look right, using them to make your college catalog look more colorful,” says Jason Riley of The Wall Street Journal. “It’s not about learning.” Mismatching students and schools only hurt minority kids. "They're being set up to fail," says Riley. "It's not working!" It wasn't, and now schools finally acknowledge that. Columbia admits test scores were a "useful indicator." No kidding. Every Ivy League has brought back testing, and other schools are following suit. Full update in my video above. ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5U2438YCbg

Why Delivery Drones Are Rare (Government Slowed Them Down) and Why We Should Build More

The future of delivery is here: Drones! But only if government gives permission. _ _ _ _ _ _ To make sure you receive weekly videos from Stossel TV, sign up here: https://www.johnstossel.com/#subscrib... _ _ _ _ _ _ Drones deliver pizza, burgers, packages, even groceries! All faster and more efficiently than cars. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos assumed we’d have delivery drones by 2018. Why are they still not common? “Confusing regulations,” says Adam Thierer, author of Permissionless Innovation. The FAA requires complex permits to fly drones farther than the operator can see them. The rules are so complex, only 8 companies have gotten permissiion. “It takes a lot of work from a company with the size and resources like Amazon to get these limited permits,” says Thierer. In the video above: the ups and downs of delivery drones, and how Trump is trying to cut regulations. ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwnK_DuK4ac

Ep. 47 Buffaloed: How a Climate Scientist Was Attacked by the White House, Congress & His Own Uni...

Fearmongering media say climate change is “our greatest threat in thousands of years.” Climate change is real, but is it the apocalypse? Climate researcher Roger Pielke Jr. doesn’t think so. But just expressing skepticism got him attacked by our government. Al Gore blamed extreme weather on climate change. “Every storm is different now because it takes place in a warmer and wetter world.” But that isn’t true.Roger Pielke Jr explains: "we haven’t observed changes in the frequency or intensity (of storms) that are beyond natural variability." He adds, “The increasing impacts of extreme weather…are due to what we build, where we build, how much wealth we have in harm’s way.” In other words, weather costs more because people build more expensive properties in risky places. Pielkie's research has won awards and is cited by the U.N. climate committee. Still, activists hate it. A congressman investigated him, and the University of Colorado shut down his research center. Pielke didn’t back down. Now, the American Enterprise Institute supports his work. “You can’t be cancelled," says Pielke, "You can let them cancel you, but you can’t be cancelled.” His full story in the podcast above. ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwmZ6noDn00
