Are We Automating Away Our Humanity? The Leadership Question AI Cannot Answer

This episode of the Impactful Teamwork podcast explores whether organisations are “automating our way out of humanity” as AI accelerates. Julia highlights rare agreement among AI leaders—Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI’s Sam Altman, and Elon Musk—on the need to pace AI development, noting Amodei’s argument that governance and safeguards are lagging behind capability. The episode argues the biggest AI leadership challenge is human, not technological: efficiency can become a dangerous addiction, and outsourcing friction may also outsource connection, trust, empathy, and wisdom. Drawing on King Charles’ comments about “emotional excellence” and nature’s balance, plus lessons from horse herds, it proposes leaders anticipate what AI changes, intentionally design what AI handles vs. what remains human, and implement through experimentation while measuring impacts on connection and thinking. 00:55 AI Moving Too Fast 03:10 Wisdom Over Efficiency 06:42 Harmony And Humanity 09:35 Horses And Connection 12:13 The Great AI Paradox 15:07 Reinventing Leadership Teams 18:30 Implementing AI Wisely 21:09 Nature Seasons And Pause 21:59 Three Leadership Questions 23:20 Deliberately Human Future Connect with Julia: Website LinkedIn Facebook Instagram Take the IMPACTFUL Teamwork Quiz to assess your team's communication, creativity culture, goal clarity, and conflict resolution skills! The Environment You Create Impacts The Candour In Your Business

Host Julia Felton argues that silence on leadership teams is often a rational response to the environment leaders create, not a lack of courage, and that psychological safety is built continuously through everyday interactions. Citing Kurt Lewin’s idea that behaviour is a function of the person and their environment, she describes Amy Edmondson’s hospital findings that better teams report more errors because admitting mistakes is survivable, warning that “clean” error logs may signal suppression. Using horse-based examples and Nokia’s 2005–2010 smartphone decline research, she shows how fear and misaligned pressure distort information flow and decision-making. Julia highlights four environmental design factors: leaders’ first three-second reaction to bad news, what happens to information after it’s raised, reward structures that discourage experimentation, and what happened to the last truth-teller. She closes with a “Cafe moment” story illustrating how shared frameworks change conditions and enable feedback. 00:46 Why Leaders Miss Bad News 02:03 Rethinking Psychological Safety 03:05 Leadership Quote And Environment 05:38 How Reactions Shape Silence 07:34 Behavior And Environment Research 08:47 Amy Edmondson Error Reporting 11:26 Horses Tell The Truth 12:53 Horse Lessons For Teams 15:46 Nokia Fear And Failure 18:51 Four Environment Components 22:14 Cultural Zones And Modes 23:41 Steve Cafe Moment Story 25:16 Weekly Challenge Reflection 26:17 Wrap Up And Next Steps Connect with Julia: Website LinkedIn Facebook Instagram Take the IMPACTFUL Teamwork Quiz to assess your team's communication, creativity culture, goal clarity, and conflict resolution skills! Learning From Failure: How Psychological Safety Helps us Build Innovative Teams

On the Impactful Teamwork podcast, host Julia Felton interviews Rachel Franco, founder of Fail Smarter, about why teamwork and learning from failure are competitive advantages. Franco shares how her Fortune 500 innovation enablement work and a Northwestern capstone on barriers to learning from failure led her to focus on helping leaders and teams overcome fear of failure so they can innovate. The conversation emphasises psychological safety—making it safe to speak up with ideas, concerns, and mistakes—through leader role-modelling, thoughtful responses, and measurement using Amy Edmondson’s Fearless Organization Scan. Franco cites data linking high psychological safety to lower turnover and higher engagement, productivity, learning agility, and skill application, and notes Google’s Project Aristotle finding it is the top factor in team effectiveness. They discuss practical blockers like lack of time, incentives, cross-team communication, weak user-centered thinking, rushed postmortems, and poor follow-through on ideas, plus experiential learning via the “failure toy” workshop and Fail Smarter’s quiz. 00:45 Meet Rachel Franco 01:27 Why Fail Smarter 04:59 Fear of Failure Culture 06:43 Psychological Safety Basics 09:00 Measuring Safety and Incentives 12:31 Stats That Prove It 17:06 AI Era Needs Experimentation 18:58 Why Projects Fail 21:05 Everyone Can Innovate 23:39 Ideas Need Follow Through 26:20 Failure Toy Workshop 29:34 Accountability and Smart Risk 31:03 Where to Find Rachel You can connect with Rachel at https://www.linkedin.com/in/rachelfranco/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/rachelfranco/ Connect with Julia: Website LinkedIn Facebook Instagram Take the IMPACTFUL Teamwork Quiz to assess your team's communication, creativity culture, goal clarity, and conflict resolution skills! Your Leadership Team Is Not Under-Led. It Is Over-Ranked.

The episode argues that teamwork is a key competitive advantage and that many organisational problems—failed change initiatives, low engagement, and poor collaboration—reflect outdated leadership models. Drawing from June Gunter’s book "Chaos to Clarity" and the host’s training with horses, it introduces the diamond model of shared leadership based on herd dynamics: the lead mare provides direction from the front, the lead stallion protects and unifies from behind, and sentinels lead from the middle with awareness, advocacy, and integration of newcomers. The host recounts executives observing wild horses at Return to Freedom and seeing the diamond formation in action during uncertainty. The episode emphasises roles over ranks, the capabilities of attention, direction, energy, and congruence, and invites listeners to assign diamond roles to tackle a current team challenge. 00:00 126 - Chaos to Clarity 00:33 The Diamond Model 01:02 Shared Leadership 02:54 Three Positions of Leadership 04:20 The Lead Mare 05:08 The Lead Stallion 06:27 The Sentinels 07:56 Return to Freedom 11:05 Followship 13:43 The Business Case 14:35 This Week's Challenge 15:20 Closing Reflections Connect with Julia: Website LinkedIn Facebook Instagram Take the IMPACTFUL Teamwork Quiz to assess your team's communication, creativity culture, goal clarity, and conflict resolution skills! Your Best Engineer Is Not Your Next Leader with Craig Bromage

Host Julia Felton welcomes Craig Bromage, Head of Infrastructure and Platforms at National Highways and creator of The Everyday Leader, to discuss teamwork and leadership. Craig reflects on nine years in the RAF, noting promotions often tied to courses, time served, and poor management with little HR correction, and contrasts this with civilian leadership development. They explore how technical experts are frequently promoted into management without the right skills, creating bottlenecks and divided focus, and argue for rewarding technical excellence without forcing people leadership. Craig’s leadership philosophy centres on “everyday” leadership, psychological safety, honest feedback, and being paid for outcomes not outputs, including the value of reflection and time away for clarity. They discuss AI adoption pitfalls such as sloppy, unchecked outputs, the need for human sanity checks and guardrails, and how AI may reshape jobs. The episode closes on authenticity, vulnerability, and congruence as trust builders, with insights from Julia’s horse-based leadership work. 01:26 RAF Leadership Lessons 04:19 Promotion Pitfalls 09:43 Everyday Leader Mindset 13:43 SMART Clarity Story 16:44 Outcomes Reflection 18:25 AI Adoption Risks 30:50 Remote Work Relationships 34:47 Horses Authentic Leadership 39:14 Closing Takeaways You can connect with Craig and read more about The Everyday Leader at https://www.linkedin.com/in/craig-bromage-0721192/ Connect with Julia: Website LinkedIn Facebook Instagram Take the IMPACTFUL Teamwork Quiz to assess your team's communication, creativity culture, goal clarity, and conflict resolution skills! Your Leadership Team Is Not Misaligned. It Is Far Too Agreeable

This episode argues leadership teams are often not misaligned but overly “agreeing,” confusing verbal consent with true alignment, which is behavioural, accountable, and must hold under pressure. It explains how meetings can produce nodding and positivity yet no change in the following weeks, because silence is treated as consent, seniority distorts discussion, offsite decisions don’t survive real-world conditions, and agreement avoids hard trade-offs. Citing Gallup mid-2026 data (49% know what’s expected; 31% US engagement; 20% global engagement in 2025) and ILM research attributing 86% of business failure to silos and poor collaboration, it links clarity and alignment to engagement and cross-functional unity. It connects AI adoption to leadership clarity (KPMG: 7% measurable AI ROI) and uses horse-herd alignment and a “Cafe moment” case to illustrate shared language and feedback. It closes with three tests: independent priorities list, fortnight calendar change, and a dissent audit. 00:49 Agreement Isn’t Alignment 01:14 Why Nothing Changes After Meetings 02:33 Defining Alignment Under Pressure 05:26 The Data Behind Misalignment 09:10 Four Signs You’re Only Agreeing 13:35 Tolerable Culture Warning 14:46 AI Rollouts Expose Alignment Gaps 18:21 Horse Herds and True Alignment 20:33 Energy Beats Words in Leadership 22:50 Cafe Moment Shared Language 24:56 Three Tests to Build Alignment 27:29 Wrap Up and Call to Action Connect with Julia: Website LinkedIn Facebook Instagram Take the IMPACTFUL Teamwork Quiz to assess your team's communication, creativity culture, goal clarity, and conflict resolution skills! Servant Leadership: The Strategy That Builds Businesses Worth Buying with David Guttman

On the Impactful Teamwork podcast, Julia Felton interviews David Guttman, a three-time Inc. 500 entrepreneur with multiple eight- and nine-figure exits, about servant leadership and building high-performing teams. Guttman shares how a misdiagnosis of terminal cancer at 24 prompted him to shift from achievement-obsession to putting coworkers first, arguing leaders serve their people and that caring can’t be faked. They discuss authenticity, trust, assuming positive intent, and the ripple effect of leadership on employees’ lives, plus the importance of hiring for humility and curiosity and firing quickly when culture fit is wrong. Guttman outlines practical scaling practices: bottoms-up budgeting and forecasting, financial literacy for all employees, quarterly board meetings, broad equity ownership, transparent all-hands updates, and internal/external core values reinforced through peer-given awards. He also offers his “Anti-MBA” course and community access. 00:45 Meet Dave Guttman 01:57 Cancer Wake Up Call 03:24 Servant Leadership Basics 07:10 Relationships Build Loyalty 08:56 Hire Right Fire Fast 12:00 Humility Curiosity Gen Z 14:53 Assume Positive Intent 17:24 Radical Transparency Trust 19:37 Scaling to Exit Playbook 22:13 Equity Budgets Core Values 28:03 Decision Making Culture 32:13 Servant Leader Accountability 33:53 Anti MBA Offer 35:24 Final Challenge Outro You can connect and learn more about Dave's work here - https://www.linkedin.com/in/drguttman/ Connect with Julia: Website LinkedIn Facebook Instagram Take the IMPACTFUL Teamwork Quiz to assess your team's communication, creativity culture, goal clarity, and conflict resolution skills! Leading Through Care and Presence: Horse Wisdom with Kelly Wendorf

Host Julia Felton welcomes Kelly Wendorf, founder of Equus and author of "Flying Lead Change: 56 Million Years of Wisdom for Leading and Living," to discuss how horses and nature inform leadership and teamwork. Wendorf shares her journey from equestrian ambitions to coaching and equine-facilitated leadership, emphasizing experiential learning and presence. They explore modern disruption as a catalyst for evolution using nature’s adaptive cycle (new beginnings, growth, consolidation, letting go) and the “messy middle” of change, plus the metaphor of a flying lead change for collective pivots amid climate change, AI, war, and unrest. Wendorf outlines five principles from horse culture—safety, connection, peace, freedom, and joy—led through care and presence rather than dominance, and defines “rewilding” as dismantling constraining social constructs to return to an innate, creative self. She invites listeners to engage via equusinspired.com, virtual courses, newsletters, and ranch retreats in Santa Fe. 00:00 Teamwork Advantage 00:50 Meet Kelly Wendorf 01:58 Calling And Origins 05:01 Coaching With Horses 06:47 Service And Adaptability 10:08 Presence Over Engagement 11:58 Adaptive Cycle Explained 14:34 Flying Lead Change Metaphor 19:22 Horse Culture Principles 22:20 Care Over Dominance 23:14 Darwin and Power With 24:49 Trauma Shifted Leadership 26:30 Care Is Not Soft 27:36 Regenerative Business Model 29:57 Courage to Change 31:26 Messy Middle Cycle 35:26 Rewilding Leaders Defined 38:25 Book and Next Steps 39:41 Final Invitation and Outro Connect with Julia: Website LinkedIn Facebook Instagram Take the IMPACTFUL Teamwork Quiz to assess your team's communication, creativity culture, goal clarity, and conflict resolution skills! AI And Organisational Culture: Why It Amplifies Whatever You Already Are

The episode argues teamwork is a key competitive advantage amid record-low global engagement (20%) and falling manager engagement (30% to 22%), noting managers drive 70% of team engagement variance and disengagement costs an estimated $10 trillion annually. It warns leaders that AI won’t fix culture but will amplify it, making intentional culture design urgent. Drawing on Peter Matthies and the Conscious Business Institute, it outlines four culture levels: Level 1 output culture (mechanistic, results-only, people as resources; AI accelerates volume and can fuel exhaustion) Level 2 intentional culture (purpose and discernment guide AI as collaborator but trust and wellbeing may still lag) Level 3 human-centric culture (people at the center, psychological safety, honest feedback) Level 4 higher-purpose culture (massive transformational purpose enabling creativity and shared leadership, modeled by horse herds). It closes with actions: make culture explicit, let teams define “rules,” and connect culture to purpose, plus an audit call-to-action. 00:00 Why Teamwork Wins 00:46 Engagement Crisis 02:27 AI Amplifies Culture 03:44 Four Culture Levels 06:19 Level One Output 10:29 Level Two Intention 13:37 Level Three Human Centric 16:19 Horses Reveal Truth 19:32 Level Four Higher Purpose 23:06 Leading Across Levels 25:47 Three Culture Shifts 29:22 Purpose Driven Turnaround 31:29 Final Questions Next Steps 32:46 Closing Thanks Connect with Julia: Website LinkedIn Facebook Instagram Take the IMPACTFUL Teamwork Quiz to assess your team's communication, creativity culture, goal clarity, and conflict resolution skills! Business Energetics and the Power of Empowerment

On the Impactful Teamwork Podcast, host Julia welcomes Jean Walters, a personal growth consultant and seven-time Amazon best-selling author, to discuss teamwork as a competitive advantage and how “business energetics,” universal laws, and metaphysics influence organisational success. Jean argues that everything is energy and that leaders can either work with it consciously or suffer its effects, emphasising gratitude, positivity, and empowerment over criticism. She shares an exercise contrasting emotions like anger vs. peace to help skeptics experience energy’s impact, and a story illustrating how negativity affected health. They explore leadership practices such as living and repeatedly communicating mission statements, recognising employees’ unique talents and interests, using personalised motivation, hiring complementary strengths, and building relationships through attention.Jean also covers overcoming rejection in sales, taking responsibility for one’s mood, using forgiveness to shift workplace dynamics, and limiting negative news consumption. Visible, Honest, and Wrong — Why Certainty Is Costing You Credibility

Julia Felton explores two research findings: 65% of leaders would rather appear decisive and be wrong than admit uncertainty and be right, and “invisibility is no longer read as neutral” but as avoidance. Drawing on a Forbes article by Doug Melville, she argues that C-suite credibility now depends on visible, human storytelling aligned with operational truth, not polished messaging, especially amid rapid change like AI and expectations of headcount reduction. She contrasts this with the “decisiveness crisis” research on “certainty theatre,” linking it to shame, threat responses, and transformation failure driven by uncertainty resistance. Felton argues the real issue is teamship: performing certainty trains teams not to surface doubts, undermining co-ownership. She invites leaders to name a current unknown aloud as an invitation to think together and suggests modeling “I’m not sure” without apology. 03:14 Visibility Is Credibility 07:03 Imperfect Presence Builds Trust 10:57 The Decisiveness Crisis 13:46 Shame And Certainty Theater 16:56 Where Research Meets Reality 19:02 Teamship And The Horse Herd 20:39 Make Uncertainty Safe 21:58 Weekly Challenge And Close 23:51 Final Takeaways And Next Steps Connect with Julia: Website LinkedIn Facebook Instagram Take the IMPACTFUL Teamwork Quiz to assess your team's communication, creativity culture, goal clarity, and conflict resolution skills! Overcoming Decision Fatigue To Prevent Decision Paralysis

Carrie Gallant and Julia Felton collaborate on a joint episode of The Tall Poppy Revolution Radio Show and the Impactful Teamwork Podcast to discuss how leaders can create conditions for better decision-making amid uncertainty and pressure. They explore decision fatigue, reluctance to decide, and how inaction is still a decision, linking these patterns to engagement, agency, and culture. They argue that consultative decision-making, context, and psychological safety improve buy-in and reduce bottlenecks at the top, while frontline input often leads to better outcomes. They also highlight that decisions are influenced by emotions, intuition, and energy, using stories from workplace leadership, hiring, and horse-assisted work to emphasise stillness, somatic intelligence, and adaptability, concluding with resources for strategic conversations and Julia’s team roadmap and quiz. 02:10 Decision Fatigue Today 03:50 Doubt and Agency 05:48 Engagement and Ownership 10:50 Consultative Decisions 16:09 Context and Buy In 17:14 Emotions Drive Choices 20:14 Gut Instinct Hiring 23:07 Energy and Culture Fit 25:11 Horses Sense Energy 25:45 Firefighting Leadership 26:37 Laser Focus Purpose 27:23 Undecided Energy Lesson 28:25 Human Design Blueprint 30:41 Intuition Inner Teacher 31:29 Stillness And Flow 34:22 Decision Speed Myth 39:51 Psychological Safety Culture 42:48 Adapting In Change 44:04 Closing And Resources Connect with Julia: Website LinkedIn Facebook Instagram Take the IMPACTFUL Teamwork Quiz to assess your team's communication, creativity culture, goal clarity, and conflict resolution skills! Leadership Fatigue: The Problem Nobody Wants to Admit

Julia Felton argues that the UK has a leadership problem driven by chronic, unrelenting pressure that the nervous system isn’t designed to sustain, leading to slower decisions, reduced trust, political caution, and emotional exhaustion. She contrasts short-term pressure (where humans perform well) with long-term dysregulation that organisations often suppress through policies and norms, creating numbness that looks like professionalism. Felton explains why AI cannot solve trust deficits or poor collaboration, citing Gallup engagement data and failure rates tied to silos, and notes AI can’t “read the room” or detect safety and withdrawal. She describes how horses provide immediate, unedited feedback on presence, coherence, and trust, shares a client example revealing hidden indecision, and advocates distributed, shared leadership via her Unbridled Teamship roadmap. 00:00 Teamwork Advantage 00:46 LinkedIn Leadership Storm 03:08 Chronic Pressure Biology 04:43 Suppressed Emotions Culture 06:03 Why AI Falls Short 09:09 Horses As Mirrors 11:08 Arena Breakthrough Story 13:06 Rethinking Leadership Models 14:55 Distributed Leadership Lessons 16:45 Building Team Resilience 18:51 Team Audit Invitation 20:06 Wrap Up And Subscribe Take the Turbocharge Your Team audit at www.businesshorsepower.com/quiz Connect with Julia: Website LinkedIn Facebook Instagram Take the IMPACTFUL Teamwork Quiz to assess your team's communication, creativity culture, goal clarity, and conflict resolution skills! Why Sales Team Culture Decides Performance More Than Talent Does

On the Impactful Teamwork Podcast, host Julia Felton interviews sales-team coach Luke Jorgenson, who spent 10 years in US door-to-door solar sales, about resilience, coaching, and building high-performing sales teams. Luke explains how repeated rejection builds a “sales muscle” and says leaders should help new hires break fear quickly by getting them in the field with support and mentoring. He argues coaching should be normalised in business, as in sports, to accelerate learning and uncover blind spots. Luke shares his “Proven Five Sales Systems” framework—compensation, incentives, sales training, team culture, and leadership mentoring—emphasising a holistic approach where culture and environment can be the biggest sales drivers. Has Your Org Chart Outlived Its Use? What the Herd Already Knows

The episode argues that teamwork is a key competitive advantage and explores why work often gets stuck departments due to unclear ownership and accountability. Drawing on Deloitte’s 2026 Human Capital Survey, it highlights that 66% of C-suite leaders say pushing beyond traditional functions (HR, finance, IT, legal, procurement) is critical, yet only 7% report real progress, creating a 59-point gap. It describes simultaneous pressures on functions—cost-cutting via shared services and automation, alongside executive calls for substantial reinvention—while noting structure and “turf” impede change. Using a horse herd and the diamond model of shared leadership as an analogy, it contrasts “running the business” (repeatable work suited to automation) with “growing the business” (cross-functional work requiring dynamic leadership). Examples include Moderna, Unilever, Cisco, Workleap, and Highmark Health, and the host invites listeners to assess where energy leaks and consider the Unbridled Teamship roadmap and a team audit. 00:46 Work Stuck Between Teams 01:34 Deloitte Gap Revealed 03:30 Why Functions Strain 07:09 Running Versus Growing 09:44 Horse Herd Leadership 12:28 Tension And Delays 16:36 Decouple Expertise 20:35 Turf And Clarity 23:16 Unbridled Adaptability 26:56 Key Takeaways 28:14 Teamship Invitation Connect with Julia: Website LinkedIn Facebook Instagram Take the IMPACTFUL Teamwork Quiz to assess your team's communication, creativity culture, goal clarity, and conflict resolution skills! Breathwork for Leaders: Regulate Stress, Boost Performance & Build Impactful Teams

Host Julia Felton welcomes high-performance coach and breathwork expert Lucas Kulbis to discuss how breathwork helps leaders regulate stress and improve team performance. Lucas shares his journey from an AI-focused computer science path and startup burnout to discovering breath as a foundational tool for state control, presence, and resilience. They explain how shallow breathing can reinforce anxiety and how intentional breathing can shift the nervous system from fight-or-flight (amygdala-driven) to calmer, clearer decision-making (prefrontal cortex), supporting emotional regulation and co-regulation with others. Lucas teaches practical techniques including the physiological sigh for rapid resets, a bedtime diaphragm-breathing practice to improve sleep, and coherence breathing (about 5.5 seconds in and out) to align heart, breath, and brain. He also describes client results, including a 10X revenue increase alongside broader life improvements, and invites listeners to his free Skool community and coaching. 00:00 Teamwork Advantage Intro 00:46 Meet Lucas Kulbis 01:55 From Startup to Burnout 02:45 Why Breath Matters 04:03 Breathwork for Leaders 05:02 Stress Reset Framework 08:54 Safety and Co Regulation 12:06 Neuroscience of Breathing 15:52 Crisis Breath Exercise 20:02 Sleep and Daily Habits 21:21 Client Results and Revenue 25:19 Coherence Breathing Basics 28:43 Resources and Closing Connect with Julia: Website LinkedIn Facebook Instagram Take the IMPACTFUL Teamwork Quiz to assess your team's communication, creativity culture, goal clarity, and conflict resolution skills! Why Your Leadership Team Is Accountable for Everything and Owns Almost Nothing

This episode of the Impactful Teamwork podcast explores “decision drag,” where routine decisions climb back up the hierarchy and leave leaders returning from holiday to a backlog of unresolved calls. Citing McKinsey research that executives spend 37% of their time on decisions that could be made lower down, the host explains how leaders inadvertently train teams to wait, creating an accountability trap that limits scale. Julia reframes accountability as proactive ownership of outcomes (not blame), distinguishes it from responsibility, and outlines three levels—individual (clarity, capability, psychological safety), team (mutual investment or “teamship”), and organizational (systems that reward or punish ownership). Julia shares five behaviours of high-accountability teams and three immediate actions: publicly declare ownership, stop rescuing, and review weekly “committed vs delivered,” plus an invitation-only forum on June 17. 00:49 Holiday Decision Pile 02:42 Decision Drag Costs 04:51 Accountability Trap 06:52 Redefining Accountability 07:46 Responsibility vs Ownership 10:06 Three Accountability Levels 10:51 Individual Accountability شروط 12:31 Team Accountability Teamship 14:13 Organizational Systems Matter 15:41 Five High Accountability Habits 16:00 Public Ownership 16:51 Stop Rescuing 18:02 Monday Momentum 18:36 Challenge Every Direction 20:27 Named Owner When Wrong 21:26 Three Actions Now 23:41 Executive Forum Invite 25:21 Final Leadership Takeaway Connect with Julia: Website LinkedIn Facebook Instagram Take the IMPACTFUL Teamwork Quiz to assess your team's communication, creativity culture, goal clarity, and conflict resolution skills! Regenerative Leadership: What Nature Already Knows (That Most Businesses Don't)

In this Impactful Teamwork episode, Julia Felton explores what nature teaches about regenerative leadership, inspired by adopting a lamb named Charlie and observing Canadian geese offspring. Using Yellowstone’s trophic cascade, she explains how removing wolves collapsed ecosystem relationships and how reintroducing them restored balance—paralleling how organisations remove key relationships and then wonder why performance collapses. She critiques extractive, command-and-control leadership that fuels silos, poor collaboration, CEO bottlenecks, and change fatigue, citing data on business failure and cross-functional unity. Drawing on lichen and horse herds, she highlights interdependence, rhythm over relentlessness, and relationships as infrastructure, and outlines three regenerative leader behaviours: investing in relationships, building “teamship,” and leading with attention. She also identifies sabotage patterns: extraction disguised as standards, busyness as avoidance, and mistaking compliance for commitment, and invites listeners to connect via businesshorsepower.com. 00:00 Teamwork Advantage 00:47 Nature Inspired Leadership 01:53 Yellowstone Regeneration 04:07 Extraction Leadership Trap 07:08 Accountability Breakdown 08:30 Lichen Interdependence 10:12 Horse Herd Teamship 13:25 Three Regenerative Principles 14:21 Regenerative Leadership Practices 18:41 Sabotage Patterns 22:49 Choose Regeneration 24:03 Closing And Subscribe Connect with Julia: Website LinkedIn Facebook Instagram Take the IMPACTFUL Teamwork Quiz to assess your team's communication, creativity culture, goal clarity, and conflict resolution skills! Mindful Leadership: Why Your Nervous System Is Shaping Your Team’s Performance

In this Impactful Teamwork episode, Julia Felton talks with neuroscience-based mindfulness expert Kelly Corbett about the inner game of leadership and how mindfulness improves presence, connection, creativity, and decision-making. Kelly explains “beginner’s mind” as approaching meetings without labels or fixed assumptions, and shares evidence that mindfulness/meditation strengthens the prefrontal cortex and executive function. She describes how reframing problems can unlock innovation, including a company that replaced harmful chemicals with water by rethinking industry standards. Practical tactics include mindful breathing—especially the “cyclic sigh” technique—to calm the nervous system, plus walking meditation and time in nature (shinrin-yoku/forest bathing) to reduce cortisol and boost natural killer cells. They discuss leader “entrainment,” gratitude practices, and how Aetna saw reduced healthcare costs and improved retention from meditation programs, with resources available at kellycorbett.com. 00:45 Meet Kelly Corbett 02:53 Mindfulness and Beginners Mind 04:30 Science and Creativity Wins 07:07 Leading With Openness 09:36 Breathwork for Calm 10:49 Cyclic Sigh Demo 14:33 Walking Meditation Nature 17:37 Gratitude and Daily Anchors 19:39 Loving Kindness Practice 23:51 Leader Entrainment Ripple 26:55 Mindfulness ROI at Work 29:11 Resources and Contact You can connect with Kelly here.
