The Government Built a National Tracking System

Joe and David return to Flock cameras and license plate readers, and this time there’s a paper trail. New reporting from 404 Media shows local police plate data is being funneled into federal surveillance centers. It goes through the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) program, a little-known drug war grant program run out of the White House. The guys break down how it works: In Georgia, cities are required to sign data-sharing agreements with HIDTA. Houston’s HIDTA office built a database combining data from Flock, Axon and other camera vendors, with links to the DEA. Every agency points to another when you ask who holds your data. They also connect it to Project Hemisphere, the same Houston office’s warrantless program covering more than a trillion AT&T call records. That leads to the bigger question: can you have a drug war without a surveillance state? Plus a white pill: in United States v. Kyle, a federal judge ruled that a warrantless Flock search violated the Fourth Amendment. The ruling threw out evidence of 91 pounds of meth, and the guys go through the bodycam footage. Communism in America?

Fresh off a Students for Liberty campus tour in Alaska, where nearly every student who came up to talk was a committed Marxist, we look at where young people are getting these ideas. Several students named two influencers: Jackson Hinkle and Hasan Piker. So we watch them and respond. We cover Hinkle’s “MAGA communism” pitch to Chris Cuomo, his claim that America is already a planned economy, and his account of what happened to Venezuela. Then we put Venezuela’s GDP next to the price of oil to show what the sanctions story leaves out. We compare Hasan Piker’s definition of socialism with Zohran Mamdani’s “dignity” version, trace China’s growth from Mao’s collapse to Deng’s market reforms, and end with the question every communist needs to answer: what caused the world GDP hockey stick, and how would central planning keep it going? Socialist, capitalist, or somewhere in between, tell us in the comments where we got it wrong. And if you’ve seen a socialist commentator who actually lays out their ideas in depth, send us the link. We want more. Does America Need a Dictator?

In this episode, we take on the growing argument that America’s political system is so broken that only a dictator or “strongman” can fix it. We unpack why that idea is gaining traction, particularly among young men who feel shut out of the economic and political system, and why frustration with corruption, housing, jobs, and the future can make radical solutions increasingly appealing. We look at lessons from the Spanish Civil War, the dangers of concentrating power in a single person, and the fundamental problem with assuming the “right” dictator will remain benevolent or willingly give up power. We also discuss the Nirvana fallacy of comparing the messy reality of constitutional government with an imaginary perfect dictatorship. Finally, we make the case that the alternative to the status quo doesn’t have to be authoritarianism. Instead, we explore rebuilding political engagement from the bottom up through stronger communities, local involvement, constitutional limits, and a popular movement focused on leaving a better country for the next generation. AI Companies go to the UN

Sam Altman, Dario Amodei, and other leaders in AI are calling for stronger international standards and safeguards—but is the push really about keeping AI safe, or about shaping who gets to control it? We break down the recent Hugging Face incident involving autonomous AI agents escaping their sandbox, what actually happened versus how the story has been portrayed, and the growing debate over open versus closed AI models. Then we dig into the push for government regulation, whether existing cybersecurity and liability laws are already equipped to handle AI-related damages, and the risk that regulation could consolidate the most powerful AI technology in the hands of a few companies and the government. Plus, why accountability and liability may matter more than trying to regulate every potential AI threat before it happens. LGBTQ Eats Their Own

What happens when a community built around inclusion turns on itself over a single night of optional masking? In this episode, we unpack the bizarre controversy surrounding Last Ditch Bar & Arts Venue, a queer bar in western Massachusetts that faced intense backlash after announcing that Saturday nights would become mask-optional. What began as an attempt to bring more customers through the door quickly spiraled into accusations of ableism, heated online attacks, an unsuccessful apology, and a marathon community meeting. We follow the story as the bar’s financial problems collide with internal community conflict, leaving its remaining owner personally responsible for a $50,000 loan and thousands in back rent. Along the way, we discuss collectivism, ideological purity, online outrage, what happens when communities struggle to tolerate disagreement, and the very real human cost for the people trying to keep the place alive. And because the story is almost too absurd not to laugh at, we brainstorm a line of Last Ditch-inspired merch—and consider whether Human Reaction might actually be able to help keep the bar afloat in the process. Democratic Socialism Is Impossible

We dig into what democratic socialism actually means, moving beyond the slogans to examine the economic system its advocates ultimately want to build. The conversation covers the push for expanded social programs, public housing, rent stabilization, nationalization of certain industries, stronger unions, and eventually an economy where workers have greater control over their workplaces. We also look at the ideological divide between social democracy and democratic socialism, including the Marxist view of class conflict and the argument for replacing traditional capitalist ownership with worker-controlled cooperatives and broader social ownership. Finally, we tackle some of the darker currents surrounding modern socialist politics, including attitudes toward political violence, the reaction to Luigi Mangione, and whether socialism can pursue radical economic change while remaining committed to democratic institutions. AI Doomers Are Going to Create the World They Don’t Want

David goes solo to break down the viral resignation of Anthropic AI researcher Jacob Coxon, who warned that the race toward superintelligence could threaten humanity. But is the sudden wave of AI doomsday coverage as organic as it appears? We look at Coxon’s background, his connections to the AI safety movement, and how quickly his resignation was amplified by media, advocacy groups, and politicians calling for regulation. David explores who benefits from framing AI as an existential threat, whether established AI companies could benefit from heavier regulation, and why government control may create risks of its own. We also dig into the broader tension between AI safety and innovation, the economic upside of AI, and whether liability and market incentives could be a better way to address real harms without handing government sweeping control over the technology. Trump Steals the PRIME Act

Beef prices are up, the meatpacking industry is dominated by a handful of major processors, and President Trump says he has a solution: give farmers and ranchers more freedom to process their own meat. But will the proposal actually address the problem—or is it another executive action that falls short of meaningful reform? David & Joe dig into how America’s meatpacking industry became so consolidated in the first place, tracing the story back to The Jungle, the creation of federal meat-processing regulations, and the increasing difficulty smaller processors face competing with massive corporations. They compare Trump’s proposal with the PRIME Act, which would give states more flexibility over locally processed meat, and question whether an executive order can accomplish reforms that ultimately require Congress. They also discuss why Trump hasn’t backed similar legislation despite having opportunities to do so for years. The conversation ultimately comes back to affordability: with beef increasingly expensive and major fast-food companies dependent on cheap meat, who actually benefits from Washington’s proposed solutions—and what would it take to create a genuinely competitive meat industry again? End of Empires Pt. 2: A New Monetary Competitor on the Horizon?

The conversation centers on China’s growing gold reserves and its effort to build an international network that makes it easier to trade between yuan, gold, and critical commodities like oil. With China accumulating gold, expanding storage capacity in Hong Kong, and developing yuan-priced gold contracts, the guys ask whether the pieces of a genuine alternative to the dollar-based financial system are beginning to fall into place. They revisit the Bretton Woods system and Nixon’s decision to end dollar-to-gold convertibility in 1971 before examining how China’s strategy differs from a traditional gold-backed currency. Rather than formally backing the yuan with gold, China appears to be building infrastructure that could make converting yuan into physical gold easier and more attractive for international businesses and trading partners. The discussion then expands to BRICS, America’s use of sanctions and the SWIFT financial system, and why countries may increasingly want alternatives to U.S.-controlled financial infrastructure. The guys consider what a gradual decline in global dollar demand could mean for Americans—including more expensive imports, inflationary pressure, diminished U.S. leverage overseas, and potentially stronger incentives for domestic manufacturing. From there, they explore China’s efforts to extend this emerging gold network through Malaysia and Africa, where Chinese companies and financial institutions are building relationships with gold producers and connecting them more closely to Chinese markets. Finally, the guys ask whether China is simply playing a longer game—building the economic infrastructure necessary to benefit from American decline rather than directly confronting the United States. They discuss the difficulty democracies have with long-term planning, America’s debt and spending problems, and whether political change will come only once these economic pressures become impossible for ordinary Americans to ignore. Is a post-dollar financial system inevitable? Maybe not. But the infrastructure for an alternative may already be taking shape. Have Women Lost Their Damn Minds? The Lindsey Clancy Affair

In this episode of Human Reaction, we take on the disturbing and deeply complicated case of Lindsay Clancy, the Massachusetts mother accused of killing her three children. We walk through the months leading up to the tragedy, including Clancy’s worsening mental health, repeated attempts to seek treatment, hospitalization, and the staggering number of psychiatric medications she was prescribed. We then break down the competing arguments at the center of the trial. The prosecution argues that Clancy was depressed and anxious but not psychotic, pointing to evidence of planning and intentionality. The defense argues that she was suffering from severe mental illness and could not understand the wrongfulness of her actions or control her behavior. We also examine questions surrounding the alleged command hallucinations she reported after the killings and whether testimony from defense experts strengthens or complicates her insanity defense. But the case has become about far more than what happened inside the Clancy home. We look at the enormous public reaction surrounding the trial, including the women gathering outside the courthouse in solidarity with Clancy and the social media posts framing her story through the lens of postpartum depression and failures of the mental-health system. That leads us into the larger cultural question: How do we acknowledge the very real struggles of postpartum depression and support mothers without allowing empathy to blur individual responsibility or turn the person who committed a horrific act into a symbol to rally around? We discuss the internet’s ability to distort our moral calculus, the difference between understanding someone's suffering and excusing their actions, and why the three children at the center of this tragedy cannot disappear from the conversation. It’s a dark episode, but one that raises difficult questions about mental health, criminal responsibility, motherhood, empathy, and what happens when a horrific criminal case becomes a cultural cause. Are We Watching the American Empire Collapse?

After a rare couple weeks off, we’re back—and apparently we picked a hell of a time to stop paying attention to the news. This week, we try to connect the dots between an increasingly shaky economy, persistent inflation, rising consumer debt, a $40 trillion national debt, and an escalating war with Iran. From food, rent, gas, and credit-card balances to the mounting pressure on the Strait of Hormuz, we look at whether these are isolated problems or signs of something much bigger. We also dig into the geopolitical consequences of the Iran war: depleted U.S. missile-interceptor stockpiles, shifting military resources away from Asia, tensions surrounding NATO, and the broader question of whether America's role as the world's dominant military and financial power is beginning to unravel. Then we zoom out to the financial system itself. With the U.S. increasingly dependent on debt and foreign demand for Treasuries, what happens if confidence in American economic and military power begins to crack? And if the current system really is a house of cards, are we headed toward a sudden collapse—or simply watching a slow unraveling that's already underway? It’s not all doom. We close with a few much-needed white pills: declining prescription drug prices, dramatically lower border releases, falling violent crime, and the possibility that a period of crisis can also create an opportunity to build something better. The empire may be wobbling—but that doesn't mean the future is already written. Fauci Pleads the Fifth: What Happens Now?

Anthony Fauci’s recent congressional testimony has reignited one of the most divisive debates to come out of the COVID-19 pandemic. After repeatedly invoking the Fifth Amendment during questioning, lawmakers and commentators are arguing over what it means, whether Congress can compel testimony from someone who has received a presidential pardon, and what—if anything—it says about accountability. In this episode, we break down the hearing, revisit the years-long debate over gain-of-function research and the origins of COVID-19, and examine the clash between Senator Rand Paul and Dr. Fauci that became one of the defining public confrontations of the pandemic. We also explore the broader questions raised by the hearing: how science, politics, and public trust became intertwined, why the lab leak theory shifted from being dismissed to being taken seriously, and whether the public is any closer to getting definitive answers. Whether you view the hearing as a legitimate search for accountability or a political spectacle, the fallout raises important questions about transparency, government oversight, and how America should prepare for the next pandemic. Can Property Rights Solve the Housing Crisis?

This week, Human Reaction takes a brief break from its usual news and politics format while David Rand and Joe are both traveling. Instead, David shares a special interview from his new project, Build the Dream, produced through the Land Liberty Movement. In this conversation with the Libertarian Christian Institute, David explains why he believes America's housing affordability crisis is fundamentally a supply problem driven by decades of restrictive zoning, land-use regulations, and government planning. Rather than focusing on popular villains like institutional investors or developers, he argues that restoring property rights and making it easier to build housing is the most effective path toward making homeownership attainable again. The discussion explores how policies like accessory dwelling units (ADUs), zoning reform, and reducing bureaucratic barriers could increase housing supply, strengthen communities, and help restore the American Dream. David also explains how churches can play a larger role in addressing housing shortages, why Montana's recent housing reforms have drawn national attention, and why housing affordability has become one of the defining political issues facing younger generations. These Mother Flockers are Tracking Us

Over 100,000 automatic license plate reader cameras are now operating across the United States, quietly collecting data on where Americans drive every day. Supporters say they're an invaluable tool for solving crimes and recovering stolen vehicles. Critics argue they're laying the foundation for a nationwide surveillance state. In this episode of Human Reaction, we break down how Flock cameras work, why they've spread so rapidly, and the growing controversy surrounding their use. They examine real-world cases of abuse—including officers allegedly using the system to stalk individuals and agencies searching camera networks in investigations far beyond violent crime. The conversation explores the constitutional questions surrounding privacy, government surveillance, private property rights, and whether Americans should accept increased monitoring in exchange for greater public safety. We also discuss Montana's approach to regulating license plate readers, potential legislative reforms, the role of warrants and transparency laws, and whether these technologies belong in public spaces at all. Can technology help reduce crime without sacrificing civil liberties? Where should the line be drawn between security and privacy? And who should decide? Birthright Citizenship, Title IX & Free Speech: SCOTUS Breaks It Down

The Supreme Court has released one of its most consequential batches of decisions in years, and we're breaking down what actually happened. We cover the rulings on transgender athletes in women's sports, birthright citizenship, campaign finance, mail-in ballots, digital privacy, the Federal Reserve, and more—explaining not just who won, but why the Court ruled the way it did. Rather than focusing on political headlines, we dig into the constitutional arguments, the justices' legal philosophies, and where the media often gets these cases wrong. Whether you agree with the outcomes or not, this episode will help you understand the reasoning behind the Court's biggest decisions and what they could mean for the future of American law and government. Michael Shermer on Truth, Skepticism, and Why Experts Get Things Wrong

What does it mean to be a skeptic in a world where institutions are losing trust, AI is becoming more human-like, and old myths refuse to die? In this episode, we sit down with bestselling author and Skeptic Magazine founder Michael Shermer to explore the ideas behind his latest book, Truth: What It Is, How to Find It, and Why It Still Matters. We discuss the role of myth and storytelling in shaping human behavior, how skepticism should be applied to modern controversies, and why truth remains essential even when certainty is impossible. Along the way, we dive into UFOs, religious belief, historical revisionism, AI consciousness, media trust, scientific authority, and the challenge of making decisions in an age of information overload. It's a wide-ranging conversation about evidence, belief, and how to navigate a world where almost everyone claims to have the truth.
