Reconnecting With Intuition: Barbara Howlin on Trusting the Whisper

That split-second feeling, the one where your body says yes before your mind catches up, is easy to override. Host Sreemedha talks with Barbara Howlin, a Reiki master, human design specialist, and founder of The Howling Hive, about why so many of us have lost touch with intuition, and how it actually speaks differently depending on the person. Barbara breaks down human design's concept of "authority," the different places intuition tends to show up in the body (emotional, gut, or that quieter intuitive spleen), and offers simple, low-pressure ways to start rebuilding trust in that inner signal, without turning it into another self-improvement project. This is a grounded, practical conversation about remembering something you already know how to do. About the Guest: Barbara Howlin is a Reiki master, human design specialist, and founder of The Howling Hive, where she has spent the past decade helping creatives and leaders reconnect with their intuition and live from a more authentic, embodied place. Her book, Can It Be That Easy?, is out November 1st. Key Takeaways: Intuition rarely delivers the whole plan at once. It tends to offer just the next single step, and trusting that one step is often what makes the rest unfold. In human design, intuition shows up through different "authorities": emotional (needing time to sit with a feeling), sacral or gut (responding strongly to specific options rather than open-ended questions), or the quieter intuitive/spleen type that requires stillness to hear. A simple daily practice: take a "sacred pause" before decisions. Moving fast is often exactly what drowns out the signal. If you feel disconnected from your intuition, try literally looking up, away from screens, toward the sky or a tree. It's a small, physical way to reconnect with something bigger than the immediate moment. One way to tell intuition apart from fear: intuition tends to feel expansive and possible, never like scarcity or lack. If a thought feels like lack, it's worth questioning it. If you have a lot of physical energy and don't move your body enough during the day, that energy often ends up spinning in your head instead. Sometimes the answer really is just to go for a walk. Why Retreat Highs Fade: Carmela Fortin on Lasting Wellness Change

You book the retreat, clear your calendar, do the yoga, journal by the ocean, and come home feeling reset. Then a week or two later, it all quietly slips away. Host Sreemedha talks with Carmela Fortin, a certified executive and organizational change management coach and co-founder of Crescent, about why that gap between the retreat high and real life isn't a willpower problem. It's a design problem. Carmela spent over a decade in tech before becoming a change management coach, and she saw the same pattern everywhere: smart, driven people who could optimize an entire company but couldn't make a wellness habit stick past the flight home. This conversation is about what actually closes that gap, and why bringing the human back into the process, not another app or checklist, might be the real answer. About the Guest: Carmela Fortin is a certified executive and organizational change management coach, AI advisor, and co-founder of Crescent, an end-to-end retreat lifecycle management platform built to help wellness practices continue after a retreat ends. She also co-founded Aloha Reset Retreats in Oahu, Hawaii, and hosts The AI Marketing Coach Podcast. Key Takeaways: The retreat itself usually isn't the problem. What's missing is a structure for carrying those practices, teachings, and connections into ordinary daily life afterward. Even highly disciplined, "optimized" people struggle here. Carmela saw this pattern repeatedly with founders and executives in tech who could scale a company but not a personal wellness habit. Wellness integration isn't about adding another checklist. It's about keeping a real relationship (with a teacher, a retreat community, or a practice) alive after the retreat ends, rather than starting from scratch every time. If you're overwhelmed by wellness options, look for the ones that involve staying connected to actual people you trust, not just more videos or content to consume alone. Change of any kind, whether personal or organizational, needs its own management. Skipping that step is often why transformation doesn't hold. You don't need a perfect plan to start. Small, steady steps carry people further than waiting for the right moment ever does. Post-Traumatic Joy Overload: Frannie Sheridan on Healing Through Fun

What if healing didn't have to look serious, heavy, or perfectly composed? Host Sreemedha talks with Frannie Sheridan, an international stress management expert and author who spent over three decades turning inherited trauma into what she calls PTJO, Post-Traumatic Joy Overload. Raised in a family shaped by secrecy and a parent's unspoken PTSD, Frannie eventually found that the fastest way out of survival mode wasn't more seriousness. It was play. Key Takeaways: Healing doesn't require staying heavy the whole way through. Humor and play can be a legitimate, fast doorway out of survival mode, not a way of avoiding what happened. The stories we've been quietly telling ourselves, often without realizing it, shape our reality. Changing that pattern takes repetition, the same way building muscle does. Try a simple breath-and-hum practice: breathe in through the nose while picturing a color that feels good, hold briefly, then hum on an exhale. A few rounds can shift your nervous system in minutes. Gratitude doesn't need to be elaborate. Three minutes, a few times a day, naming ordinary things you're thankful for can meaningfully lower stress over time. Movement changes physiology fast. Simple, even silly, movement paired with music can shift you out of a low mood before you've had time to think your way out of it. Different tools work for different people and different moments. If one technique doesn't land for you right now, that's normal. Try another. Early Language Development: Jeaneen Tang on Raising Confident Talkers

The first time a child in your life says a full sentence can feel like magic, something that just happened on its own. Host Somya talks with Jeaneen Tang, a speech-language pathologist with over 20 years of experience, about why that magic actually starts building much earlier than most parents realize, and why waiting to "see if they catch up" often costs families precious time. Jeaneen speaks candidly about her own son's traumatic brain injury and stroke at 13 months old, the surprising ways well-meaning parents can accidentally slow language development by anticipating a child's every need, and simple, natural ways to build vocabulary into everyday moments like snack time and story time. This is a warm, practical conversation for any parent, caregiver, or educator who wants to support a child's communication before it becomes a formal concern. About the Guest: Jeaneen Tang is a speech-language pathologist with over 20 years of experience working with children from early intervention through school age. After her own son suffered a traumatic brain injury and stroke at 13 months old, she wrote Play, Dumb, and Sabotage, a conversational handbook that empowers parents, caregivers, and educators to build language development through everyday, intentional interaction. Key Takeaways: Language doesn't just happen naturally the way some parents assume. Like rolling over or crawling, it needs to be nurtured through talking, singing, and interacting, starting even before birth. Watch for a real first word around 12 months (with a healthy range of 10 to 14 months). If it's not there, it's never too early to check in with a professional, even just for reassurance. One surprising cause of delayed talking: parents who anticipate a child's every need so well that the child never has to ask for anything. Stepping back deliberately, like leaving a little out of reach at snack time, can encourage a child to communicate. Watch for two different patterns: kids who understand everything but aren't yet expressing it (these often catch up quickly), versus kids who are delayed in both understanding and expression (these may need longer-term support). Build vocabulary into ordinary moments. Hold up two choices, like two shirts or two foods, about shoulder-width apart so you can see where your child is looking, and narrate accordingly. If progress feels slow, lean on both professionals and a community of other parents going through something similar. Staying calm yourself, especially during a child's frustration, tends to help them stay calmer too. Anticipatory Grief: Theresa Evans on Loving Someone Toward the End

Some losses arrive with a date and a time already attached. Host Sreemedha talks with Theresa Evans, a former critical care nurse and author, about what it was like to know the exact day her mother would die through Canada's medical assistance in dying program, and how she spent the three months leading up to it. Rather than let grief take over early, Theresa and her sisters chose to pour their attention into making that time a celebration of their mother's life. This is a tender, unflinching conversation about anticipatory grief: the loss you live through before it happens, the strange gift of knowing your time is limited, and why having honest conversations about how someone wants their end of life to look can change everything for the people who stay behind. About the Guest: Theresa E. Evans is a former critical care nurse and the author of Choosing to Die: A Daughter's Story of Supporting Her Mother's End of Life Through Assisted Death. She spent the final three months of her mother's life supporting her through Canada's medical assistance in dying program and now writes and speaks about anticipatory grief, presence, and end-of-life care. Key Takeaways: Knowing the exact date someone you love will die can bring a strange gift: it can make you more present than you've ever been, because you know the moments are limited. Making the end of someone's life "about them, not about us" means setting aside our own grief in the moment, when possible, so they don't feel they have to take care of us. Have the hard conversation about how someone wants the end of their life to look before it's happening, not during. It gives everyone time to prepare mentally and emotionally. Grief doesn't have to be treated as something to escape. Letting yourself feel it fully, even physically, can be part of honoring how important the relationship was. The good memories tend to outlast the hard ones. Laughter, small rituals, and moments of closeness can exist right alongside the heaviest grief. Families that avoid conflict and stay focused on the dying person, rather than disagreements among themselves, tend to look back with far more peace. Paying Attention: Matt Thomas on Awareness and a Well-Lived Life

Most of us eat breakfast while scrolling, walk without seeing, speak without listening. Host Avik talks with Matt Thomas, a poet, farmer, and engineer from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, about what it actually means to be present, and why "mindfulness" doesn't mean having an empty mind. Matt's own wake-up call came around age 48, when he realized he'd never truly held onto his youth and worried he'd reach old age with the same regret about middle age. His answer wasn't some elaborate practice. It was simpler and harder: pay attention. To groceries, to a spouse's story about their day, to the ache in your legs after a long walk. This is a grounded, unpretentious conversation about noticing your own life while you're still living it. About the Guest: Matt Thomas is a poet, smallholder farmer, and engineer living in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. He writes about home, time, and attention, and is the author of the poetry collection Disappearing by the Math (2024), with a second collection, Cicada, Dog & Song, forthcoming from Serving House Books. Key Takeaways: Mindfulness isn't a blank mind. Thoughts about dinner or your to-do list will still show up. The practice is letting them pass through instead of grabbing onto each one. A useful test for whether you're actually paying attention: can you recall your day in detail at night, including how your body felt, not just what you did? Ordinary chores and errands are where most of us check out completely. They're also the easiest place to practice noticing again. People, especially in close relationships, often tune out the most around family. Try actually listening to what your partner or kid tells you, and quiz yourself on it later. Setbacks are guaranteed, not exceptional. Expecting them ahead of time (the way a farmer expects things to break) makes them far less destabilizing when they happen. There's no universal formula for a well-lived life. The real question to ask yourself daily: is there something I could change a little to bring myself more happiness, without hurting anyone else? 8 Years at Sea: Alison Gieschen on Freedom, Risk, and Starting Over

Most people picture life on a sailboat as sunshine and calm harbors. Host Avik talks with Alison Gieschen, a former schoolteacher and equestrian who sold everything with her husband Dan and sailed off to circle the globe, about the version most people don't picture: broken engines, dangerous inlets, and seven months stranded waiting for a spare part. Eight years and fifty countries later, Alison says the peace she found wasn't the absence of struggle. It was knowing she could handle it. This conversation is for anyone sitting on a dream they keep putting off. Alison and her husband made the leap in their mid-fifties, with no guarantee it would work, just a plan, a list, and the willingness to start before they felt ready. About the Guest: Alison Gieschen is a former schoolteacher and internationally successful equestrian who, alongside her husband Dan, sold everything to sail around the world, visiting over 50 countries across five continents. She writes about the lessons of that journey and is the author of several books, including the sailing memoir series Riding the Waves of Reality. Key Takeaways: The freedom people imagine in a life like this isn't the absence of hard moments. It comes from trusting yourself to handle whatever the hard moment turns out to be. If you're waiting for a dream to feel less risky before you start, that feeling may never fully go away. Alison and her husband left in their mid-fifties with a plan, not a guarantee. Turn a big dream into something workable: set a timeline, however long you need, and build it out into concrete lists you can actually check off. You're not too old. Alison has met sailors in their 70s and 80s living the same lifestyle. If you're physically and mentally able, age isn't the barrier it feels like. Constant change can actually be grounding once you adapt. Alison describes happiness as a state of mind you carry with you, not something tied to a specific place or plan going right. When setbacks hit, and they will, knowing they're part of the deal in advance makes them easier to sit with. Research what you're getting into so the hard parts don't blindside you. Family Enmeshment: Ryan Slobodian on Guilt, Loyalty, and Self

There's a kind of family closeness that looks like love but leaves you feeling stuck: a parent who needs you more than you need them, guilt that follows every boundary, a habit of keeping someone else comfortable until you forget what you actually want. Host Avik talks with Ryan Slobodian, a registered clinical counselor and founder of Stone Reef Psychotherapy, about enmeshment: the blurry, guilt-bound version of family closeness that can quietly shape everything from your career choices to your romantic relationships. Ryan breaks down how enmeshment usually forms, the roles people get assigned in childhood (the golden boy, the caretaker, the peacekeeper), and why cutting a family off entirely often isn't the healthiest first move. This is a compassionate, clear-eyed look at what it actually takes to love your family and still have a self of your own. About the Guest: Ryan Slobodian is a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) and Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT) in British Columbia, and founder of Stone Reef Psychotherapy. He specializes in helping adults untangle enmeshment, guilt, and divided family loyalties so they can build more autonomous, passionate lives and relationships. Key Takeaways: Healthy closeness doesn't come with guilt attached. Enmeshment is closeness that's ruled by guilt or fear of retribution whenever someone tries to live their own life. Enmeshment often starts small: a distant or checked-out parent leaves an emotional gap, and a child steps in to fill it, taking on a role like the caretaker, the peacekeeper, or the golden child. A common early sign shows up in romantic relationships: a partner who feels like they can never quite be the priority, or who notices ambivalence and difficulty committing. Cutting a family off entirely isn't always the healthiest first step. Taking space to figure out who you are, separate from inherited roles, can be more powerful than full separation. Much of the guilt people feel about creating distance from family is actually misplaced shame, the belief that wanting separateness makes you a bad person. Recognizing that distinction matters. You're allowed to take space to figure out your own identity without deciding you need to cut people off completely. Define what kind of relationship actually works for you. How to Rebuild Your Identity After Trauma: Richard Lobo on Shadow Work and Authenticity

How do you rebuild your identity after trauma, loss, or a major life transition? In this episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Avik Chakraborty speaks with Richard Lobo, bestselling author of The Trifecta Code, about trauma, shadow work, emotional healing, authenticity, and turning pain into purpose. After losing both parents, experiencing the end of his marriage, and watching the identity he had built begin to collapse, Richard faced a difficult choice: continue performing behind an emotional mask or confront the pain he had suppressed for decades. Richard shares how writing his memoir helped him examine family trauma, grief, guilt, shame, relationships, self-worth, and the stories he had been telling himself. He explains why many people hide behind socially acceptable identities, how emotional suppression can affect relationships, and why facing difficult emotions became an important part of his personal transformation. This conversation explores the connection between trauma and identity, the meaning of shadow work, and how honest storytelling can help people understand their past without allowing it to control their future. What Is Shadow Work? Shadow work is the process of recognizing and exploring the emotions, fears, beliefs, and parts of ourselves that we may have rejected, hidden, or suppressed. Richard discusses shadow integration through the lens of his own lived experience and explains how examining these hidden patterns helped him reconnect with his authentic self. What You Will Learn in This Episode: • How trauma and grief can reshape personal identity • Why people develop emotional masks and false narratives • What shadow work and shadow integration mean • How guilt and shame can keep people emotionally stuck • Why authenticity is different from oversharing • How childhood experiences can influence adult relationships • The difference between quitting and surrendering what no longer serves you • How memoir writing and storytelling can support self-reflection • Why rebuilding your life begins with telling yourself the truth • How pain, loss, and personal crisis can become catalysts for purpose Richard also discusses The Trifecta Code, his memoir and personal transformation framework. The book explores how the loss of his parents, marriage, and former identity became a turning point that led him toward deeper self-awareness, authenticity, and purpose. This episode is for anyone navigating trauma, grief, identity loss, divorce, emotional suppression, burnout, or a major life transition. It is also for listeners interested in shadow work, authentic living, personal growth, memoir writing, emotional resilience, and transforming pain into purpose. Your past is part of your story, but it does not have to write every chapter that follows. About Richard Lobo: Richard Lobo is the author of The Trifecta Code. The Hidden Cost of Getting Even | Karen Bentley

What if the way you get what you want matters just as much as getting it? In this episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, Avik speaks with bestselling author, educator and WarriorSTRONG creator Karen Bentley about a deceptively simple practice: harmlessness. Karen isn't talking only about obvious violence. She focuses on the everyday ways people use anger, sharp words, judgment, revenge, manipulation or even an irritated tone to influence other people. These reactions can feel fast and effective, but Karen argues that they often come with an internal cost. She calls our automatic, self-protective reaction pattern the "ego robot": the part of us that immediately wants to retaliate, correct someone, label them or get even when we feel crossed. Her alternative isn't passivity. It's creating enough awareness and pause to recognize the impulse and choose what happens next. Karen also introduces a memorable leaking rowboat metaphor. In her WarriorSTRONG framework, harmful habits create "leaks" that drain what she calls our life energy. You might be journaling, eating well, practicing affirmations and doing other positive things, but Karen's argument is that stopping the behaviors that drain you can be just as important as adding new ones. And her practical starting point is surprisingly manageable: choose one behavior you want to stop and stop it for five consecutive days. Not your hardest habit. Start with something you genuinely believe you can change. About Karen Bentley: Karen Bentley is a two-time bestselling author, educator and entrepreneur and the creator of WarriorSTRONG Training and The LOVE Experience. Her latest book, The WarriorSTRONG Manifesto, presents her framework around self-mastery, harmlessness, discipline and what she calls life-energy conservation. The WarriorSTRONG Manifesto reached the #1 bestseller position on Amazon following its April 2026 publication. Bentley earned her bachelor's degree in education and exercise physiology from Northeastern University. Key Takeaways: Harmlessness isn't only about avoiding obvious violence. It can involve everyday words, judgments, tones and retaliatory behaviors. Fast, harsh responses may produce an immediate result while still leaving an emotional cost. Karen calls automatic revenge, correction and self-centered reactions the "ego robot." The goal isn't necessarily to eliminate every reactive thought. It's to create enough pause to choose what happens next. Harmlessness isn't the same as letting people walk over you. Karen connects harmlessness with self-respect: how you behave when nobody is watching affects how you feel about yourself. Tone of voice can communicate anger even when your actual words appear acceptable. Awareness is difficult because many everyday reactions happen automatically. Meditation can be one tool for creating space between an impulse and your response. Karen's practical challenge is to stop one manageable behavior for five consecutive days and use that achievement as evidence that change is possible. Breaking the Doom Scroll: Sam Brooks on Building a Good News Habit

Open your phone, check the headlines for thirty seconds, and you'll probably close the app feeling worse than when you started. Host Avik talks with Sam Brooks, a former screenwriter and story editor who spent years inside the recommendation algorithms of digital publishing and gaming, about why the news makes the world feel more broken than it actually is, and what he did about it: he built Rally, an app that surfaces genuinely hopeful, verified news stories every day. Sam doesn't pretend the world's problems don't exist, and he's clear that a good news feed is not a substitute for therapy. What he offers instead is something smaller and more useful: a simple, low-effort way to shift what you see first thing in the morning, and why that one shift can change more than you'd expect. About the Guest: Sam Brooks is a former screenwriter and story editor who moved from Los Angeles to Berlin. He worked inside recommendation algorithms in digital publishing and gaming before building Rally, a free app that surfaces vetted, hopeful news stories from trusted publishers around the world without sugarcoating reality. Key Takeaways: The gap between how bad the world feels and how it actually is often comes down to how news reaches us now: constant, algorithm-driven, and rewarded for triggering strong reactions. You don't need to disconnect from news entirely. The goal is being informed without being submerged in it. Try attaching a short "good news" habit to something you already do every morning, like checking your phone or having your first coffee. Small and automatic beats ambitious and occasional. A good news habit isn't a cure and it isn't therapy. When something genuinely bad happens, let yourself feel it, and lean on real support systems and professionals when you need to. A helpful rule of thumb: roughly 80% of what we worry about never happens. Take news for what it is, without spinning it into predictions about the future. Keep it brief. Even 3 to 5 minutes of intentionally positive content in the morning can shift how the rest of your day feels. Finding Your Power: Noreen Noble on Somatic Work and Self-Trust

A lot of people hear "step into your power" and assume it means becoming someone entirely different. Host Somya talks with Noreen Noble, author of The Superhero Inside, about why that's backwards. Noreen researched dozens of superhero origin stories and found they fall into nine categories, the same categories she believes shape how real people come into their own power. Her core message: it's already in you, you just have to find it. The conversation moves from mindset into the body, covering why so many of us live too much in our heads, a simple breathing technique that calms the nervous system in real time, and why so many women (specifically) struggle to name even five things they actually want. If you've felt disconnected from yourself lately, this episode offers a gentle, practical way back. About the Guest: Noreen Noble (also known professionally as Noreen Leilani) is the author of The Superhero Inside, a book exploring mindset, somatic practices, and energetic work that helps people reclaim their power and shape their reality. She works as a coach helping clients reconnect with their bodies, their intuition, and their sense of self. Key Takeaways: Your power isn't something you build from scratch. It's already shaped in you, often from childhood, and the work is remembering it, not manufacturing it. When you're stuck in your head, get into your body. Somatic tools like breathwork, movement, sound, or touch can bring you back to the present moment. Try this breath practice anywhere: inhale through your nose, hold briefly, then exhale for twice as long as the inhale. It signals to your nervous system that you're safe. If you can't easily name five things you want just for yourself, that's worth noticing. It may point to a deeper disconnection from your own desires. Start noticing where emotions show up in your body. Simple practices like rubbing your hands together and noticing the sensation build this awareness gradually. How you see your own identity shapes what you experience as your reality. Shifting how you think about yourself is often the first domino to fall. Meaningful Workplace Recognition: Julie Tylman on Building With Purpose

Eleven years into building a company with a co-founder, most people expect Julie Tylman to have some secret formula for making it all look easy. She doesn't, and that's kind of the point. Host Sreemedha talks with Julie, co-founder of Group Together, about what it actually takes to sustain a business partnership, and why so many workplaces struggle to make people feel genuinely valued even when they're trying hard to. Julie shares how a card meant for kids' birthdays became a lifeline for isolated remote workers during the pandemic, why she made a hard call to give away a core product for free, and what she's learned about staying committed when a plan doesn't survive contact with reality. This is a conversation about the small, human gestures that hold teams and partnerships together. About the Guest: Julie Tylman is co-founder of Group Together, a platform that helps companies and individuals celebrate milestones and show appreciation through group cards and gifts, without the waste and transactional feel of typical corporate recognition. She and her co-founder have run the company together for 11 years. Key Takeaways: Long-term business partnerships don't run on perfect harmony. They run on shared vision, mutual respect, and a working process for compromise when you disagree on how to get there. Recognition becomes hollow at scale unless it's made personal again. A generic badge or gift card can feel transactional; a specific message about what someone actually did doesn't. If you can't change the culture around you, you can still start small. One card, one message, one person noticed, can be the beginning of a shift. Sustainability and meaning aren't opposites. You can strip out waste without striping out the feeling of being celebrated. Hard calls made for your customers, even ones that hurt the business short-term, can turn into the foundation of what your company becomes. When things get harder than expected, stay close to the people you're building for. Their feedback is often what shows you the way through. Stuck Beliefs: Liz Coleman on Quieting Overthinking and Self-Trust

If you look calm on the outside but your mind won't stop running the same loop at 3am, this episode is for you. Host Avik talks with Liz Coleman, a certified transformational life coach with a degree in psychology, about the quiet beliefs that keep high-functioning people stuck long after the surface problems get "handled." Key Takeaways: Overthinking usually isn't about your schedule. It's the quiet "I have to" stories running in the background that make everything feel heavier than it is. Try flipping the script from "I have to" to "I get to." That one shift can lighten a task without changing anything about it. Healing works best when mind and body move together. Add movement, breathing, or a short walk alongside any mindset work you're already doing. When stress hits in the moment, try the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding method: five things you see, four you hear, three you touch, two you smell, one you taste. Learning to tell your own intuition apart from an old childhood belief starts with asking where a "rule" you're following actually came from. Setbacks are part of the journey, not proof you're broken. Look back at how far you've come, then return to whatever practice was already working. Reclaiming Your Identity: Holly Fair on Healing, Self-Love, and Your Crown

What if rebuilding your life didn't require grit and willpower, but something as simple as a smile? Host Ria talks with Holly Fair, a Tony Robbins-trained transformation coach and founder of Fire Up Life, about reclaiming identity after childhood abuse, divorce, infertility, and profound loss. Holly lost 150 pounds and wore an actual crown every day for two years as a daily practice in becoming who she wanted to be. This conversation moves past the perfectionism that keeps so many people stuck, and into something gentler: joy as the doorway to lasting change. Holly shares the moment she stood on stage in front of 5,000 people and chose a new identity for herself, and what that choice has meant every day since. About the Guest: Holly Fair is a Tony Robbins trainer, certified life coach, and founder of Fire Up Life. She lost 150 pounds and wore a crown every day for two years as part of reclaiming her identity after surviving childhood abuse, divorce, infertility, and profound loss. She now coaches women through midlife transitions, helping them reconnect with their authentic selves. Key Takeaways: Perfectionism is often the real block to change, not lack of willpower. Give yourself permission to wobble the way you would learning any new skill. Try Holly's "smile through hard things" practice. Smiling doesn't erase a hard moment, but it changes how you move through it. If you're rebuilding your identity, take an honest inventory of what you love about yourself, including the parts you've been told are "too much." Choosing a new identity doesn't require a grand gesture. Small, consistent acts of showing up for yourself compound into real transformation. You don't have to wait until you've healed, lost the weight, or fixed the thing to start treating yourself like the person you're becoming. Start today, with something small. Healthy Boundaries Without Guilt: Glen Alex on Redefining Self-Respect

If you've ever said yes when you meant no, and then spent the rest of the day resenting it, this episode is for you. Host Somya sits down with Glen Alex, LCSW, author and boundaries educator, to unpack why healthy boundaries have nothing to do with being cold or selfish, and everything to do with keeping yourself safe. Glen breaks down the two most common boundary breakers she sees in her practice, oversharing and over-yessing, and walks through the difference between appropriate guilt and the kind that just keeps you stuck. If you're ready to stop apologizing for choosing yourself, this conversation offers a clear, compassionate place to start. About the Guest: Glen Alex is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and author who has spent years studying what it means to live with boundaries that support both connection and self-respect. She is the author of Living in Total Health and Living Boundaries, and offers complimentary consultations through her practice. Key Takeaways: Boundaries aren't walls built to keep people out. They're agreements you make with yourself about what you will and won't carry. Watch for the two most common boundary breakers: oversharing (giving people ammunition before trust is earned) and over-yessing (saying yes when the honest answer is no). Learn to tell appropriate guilt (your conscience flagging a real value you violated) apart from inappropriate guilt (a looping "I should" that has no corrective action attached). Start where the discomfort actually is. If anxiety or burnout is showing up, trace it back to the specific relationship or ask that needs a boundary. Slipping up doesn't mean you failed. The moment you notice, you step back in, no self-punishment required. A boundary only holds if your "why" is strong enough to outlast the pushback from people used to getting their way. Can Fiction Help Us Understand Our Mental Health? | Nneka Oluoha on Healthy Mind, Healthy Life

Sometimes the feelings we cannot explain directly become easier to recognize when we meet them inside someone else's story. In this episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Swati sits down with Nigerian American author and physician Nneka Oluoha to explore how fiction can create a safer reflective space for conversations around mental health, emotional struggle, family relationships and healing. Nneka shares how her upcoming novel, Live for Me, Nkem, explores depression, motherhood, marriage, cultural expectations and the struggles people can carry quietly behind closed doors. Rather than announcing everything a character is experiencing, she uses story, behavior and perspective to allow readers to gradually understand what is happening. The conversation explores why people sometimes remain silent when they are struggling, what happens when we recognize ourselves in fictional characters, and how stories can give us language for emotions we have never been able to describe. Nneka also speaks candidly about the emotional weight of writing difficult material. While writing from the perspectives of children affected by a parent's mental health struggles, she found some sections especially difficult. Her response was not to force the work, but to pace herself, walk, spend time in nature, lean on supportive relationships and sometimes put the manuscript away until she could return with greater clarity. Importantly, Nneka emphasizes that fiction is not a clinical textbook or a substitute for professional mental health support. Characters make mistakes, hold false beliefs and take actions that should not automatically be treated as real-world guidance. About Nneka Oluoha: Nneka Oluoha is a Nigerian American writer and physician. She completed medical school in Nigeria before moving to the United States, where she completed an internal medicine residency and now works as a hospitalist. Her writing is influenced by her Igbo heritage and an interest in family dynamics, identity, cultural expectations and the silent battles people carry. Her novel Live for Me, Nkem explores depression, marriage, motherhood, family expectations and hidden emotional struggles, and is scheduled for publication by Koehler Books on September 9, 2026. Key Takeaways: Fiction can create emotional distance that makes difficult experiences easier to explore. Recognizing yourself in a character can give language to feelings you have struggled to name. Human beings are complicated, and powerful characters rarely fit neatly into "good" or "bad." Silence may come from pain, fear, unreadiness or not feeling safe enough to revisit an experience. Stories can encourage reflection without becoming instructions for how someone should manage their mental health. Emotionally demanding creative work sometimes requires rest rather than more pressure. Walking, nature, supportive relationships and intentional breaks helped Nneka reconnect with her writing. Stepping away is not always giving up. Sometimes distance is what allows clarity to return. Chapters: 03:03 Why stories can help us approach difficult emotions 04:49 The power of fiction in mental health conversations 06:28 Writing complex characters without reducing them to good or bad 08:10 What can sit underneath emotional silence 09:40 Writing what a character isn't ready to say 11:28 When readers recognize themselves in a character 13:21 Can fiction give us language for difficult feelings? 15:27 Fiction as reflection, not a replacement for care 17:20 How readers responded to Live for Me, Nkem 19:14 The emotional cost of writing heavy material 21:50 Why stepping away can help writers move forward 23:39 Where to find Nneka and her book Connect With Nneka: Nneka Oluoha's official website Nneka Oluoha on Goodreads Instagram as @nneka.oluoha. Her book is available for pre-order ahead of its September 9 release. Want to be a guest on Healthy Mind, Healthy Life? Restored by the Storm: Navigating Life's Unexpected Challenges, with Bill Derrick

We all have a plan until life decides otherwise. One phone call, one diagnosis, one unexpected loss, and suddenly the path we thought we were on doesn't look the same anymore. Maybe navigating unexpected challenges isn't about having the perfect plan, maybe it's about learning how to find your footing when the plan changes completely. Bill Derrick, a business leader who guided his family's construction company through the Great Recession before later being diagnosed with incurable blood cancer, joins host Swati to talk about what resilience actually looks like day to day, why hiding struggle rarely works in the long run, and what he's learned about the two things we can always control: attitude and effort. About the Guest: Bill Derrick is a Christian business leader, author, and public speaker who led his family's construction and real estate firm, Derrick Companies, through the Great Recession, and later navigated a diagnosis of multiple myeloma, an incurable blood cancer. He is the author of Restored by the Storm: Navigating Through Life's Unexpected Challenges. Key Takeaways: Being told "you'll look back and this will be the best thing that happened to you" rarely helps, empathy and a genuine offer to help mean more. There are two things you can always control, no matter what's happening around you: your attitude and your effort. Hiding a struggle might work short term, but eventually it shows up in performance, tardiness, or how you treat people, it rarely holds up long term. The storm always ends eventually, even when it feels permanent, situations change and you'll end up somewhere different than where you started. Progress often looks like two steps forward, one step back, a setback doesn't erase how far you've already come. Parenting Through Medical Crisis: What Comes After Survival, with Reasa Selph

You think you know what matters until the phone rings at 2am, until the monitors start beeping faster, until a doctor looks at you and says we need to move now. But what happens after the immediate crisis is over? Survival doesn't always mean everything suddenly feels okay. Reasa Selph, a Texas marketing strategist and patient advocate whose son Nicholas nearly died from septic shock in December 2023, joins host Swati to talk about the 34 days that followed, the emotional toll that surfaced only after coming home, and how the experience turned into advocacy work aimed at protecting other families from the same outcome. About the Guest: Reasa Selph is a Texas-based marketing strategist, patient advocate, and podcaster, and the founder of Reasa's Pieces. After her son Nicholas was twice sent home from an emergency room before going into septic shock on Christmas Day 2023 and spending 34 days in intensive care, she became a vocal advocate for pediatric patient safety, supporting proposed Texas legislation, known as Nicholas' Law, requiring hospitals to disclose their pediatric emergency care capabilities to parents. Key Takeaways: Leaving the hospital doesn't mean the hard part is over, aftercare, second opinions, and emotional recovery often bring a whole new kind of work. Trusting your instincts as a parent matters, if something doesn't add up, it's okay to ask for the records, ask questions, or seek another opinion. The toll of survival mode is often invisible until afterward, both Reasa and her son needed therapy to process what they'd been through. Advocacy doesn't require expertise, it can start with writing things down, asking to see test results, and speaking up when something feels off. Healing doesn't mean the fear disappears completely, it means learning to meet it differently when it resurfaces. When You've Changed, But Everyone Still Sees the Old You, with Dawn Stebbing

Have you ever felt like you've changed, but the people around you still treat you like the person you used to be? You've become more confident, set healthier boundaries, changed the way you think, but every time you go back home or walk into work, it's like everyone is still reading an old version of your story. Dawn Stebbing, a voice and visibility strategist who has spent 16 years helping accomplished women be seen and heard at the level they actually operate at, joins host Shivam to talk about why growth doesn't automatically get noticed, how to close the gap between who you're becoming and how others still see you, and why some relationships naturally fall away as you change. About the Guest: Dawn Stebbing is a speaker, voice and visibility strategist, and certified international image consultant who spent 16 years as President of the Chicago chapter of the Association of Image Consultants International. She is the creator of the Visibility Code framework and the author of The Power Is in the Pearl, helping professional women align their presence, communication, and message with the leader they've become. Key Takeaways: First impressions speak before you say a word, how you show up communicates something whether you intend it to or not. Growth requires stepping out of comfort into the unfamiliar, it's scary, but that discomfort is a sign of progress, not failure. Not everyone will grow with you, and that's okay, some people become your cheerleaders, others quietly fall away, both are part of the process. Sharing your story, even in small pieces with one trusted person, is often the first step to reclaiming a voice you've silenced. Small shifts like genuinely saying thank you can change how people respond to you, changing yourself first often changes the pattern around you.
