Fantasy for the Ages

Jim Scriven

Jim (Father) and Zach (Son) talk about their ideas and perspectives on fantasy fiction, starting with Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time series but straying in various other directions as well. The generational difference in how they view what they read will become obvious (and entertaining, they hope!). Come enjoy our debates and explorations over what all these books mean, and see who you agree with.

Why Supergirl Failed (It's Not What You Think)

Supergirl (2026) has officially landed—and after all the controversy, online backlash, and disappointing box office, I finally sat down to see what went wrong. Was Milly Alcock REALLY the problem? Or did Supergirl have much bigger issues? In this spoiler-lite review, I break down James Gunn’s latest DC Universe adventure, starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El. And here’s the thing: this movie wasn’t nearly as bad as I’d been led to believe. But it wasn’t particularly good, either. My wife and I watched this one together, and we came away in pretty much the same place: we didn’t regret watching it. We just really wish it had been better. What did YOU think of Supergirl? Was Milly Alcock a good Kara Zor-El? Did you like this darker interpretation of the character? And why do you think the movie failed to connect with a larger audience? Let me know in the comments! Coyote vs. ACME Had NO RIGHT to Be This Good?

Coyote vs. ACME had NO RIGHT to be this good. Taking Wile E. Coyote—the perpetually unsuccessful predator who has spent decades ordering catastrophically unreliable products from ACME—and building an entire feature-length movie around him sounds like a recipe for disaster. Instead, Coyote vs. ACME somehow delivers a genuinely clever story, terrific performances, fantastic live-action/animation integration, plenty of Looney Tunes insanity...and actual emotional weight?! HOW?! In this spoiler-lite review, Jim breaks down why Coyote vs. ACME works so incredibly well, from its surprisingly strong writing and brilliant use of a completely silent Wile E. Coyote to an excellent cast led by Will Forte, Lana Condor, and an absolutely hilarious John Cena. We’ll talk about: • Why the simple premise of Wile E. Coyote suing ACME actually supports a full movie • Why keeping Coyote silent was exactly the right decision • The terrific cast and performances • Why John Cena continues to be comedy gold • The impressive blend of animation and live action • The countless treats waiting for longtime Looney Tunes fans • And how in the WORLD this movie managed to make Jim emotionally invested in Wile E. Coyote! Whether you grew up watching Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote or have barely seen a Looney Tunes cartoon in your life, Coyote vs. ACME proves that nostalgia works best when it’s supporting a genuinely good story—not replacing one. Have you seen Coyote vs. ACME? Did it surprise you as much as it surprised Jim? And after decades of defective rockets, catapults, explosives, giant magnets and assorted instruments of cartoon destruction, exactly HOW MUCH does ACME owe Wile E. Coyote? The New He-Man Movie FLOPPED — But Is It Actually Bad?

Hollywood has once again reached into the toy box, grabbed a beloved childhood franchise, and thrown a massive budget at it. But was Masters of the Universe actually worth the power? In this spoiler-lite review, Jim heads back to Eternia to discuss the 2026 Masters of the Universe movie starring Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man, Jared Leto as Skeletor, Camila Mendes as Teela, Idris Elba as Man-At-Arms, and Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn. Jim wasn’t even planning to watch this one—until a Fantasy for the Ages viewer asked what he thought about it. Apparently running a fantasy channel means you should probably watch the giant-budget fantasy movie featuring a muscular guy waving a magic sword around. Who knew? We’ll cover: ⚔️ Jim’s history with He-Man—including his inexplicable affection for the wonderfully corny 1987 Dolph Lundgren movie ⚔️ A spoiler-lite look at the story ⚔️ Five reasons you might actually enjoy Masters of the Universe ⚔️ The surprisingly committed cast and polished production ⚔️ Jared Leto having WAY too much fun as Skeletor ⚔️ That Dolph Lundgren appearance! ⚔️ Three reasons you might want to skip it ⚔️ And the biggest question of all: Did we really need another He-Man movie? Have you seen Masters of the Universe? Were you a He-Man fan growing up? And do you think this new version deserves another trip to Eternia—or should He-Man head back into the toy box? Is Gardens of the Moon REALLY the Hardest Start in Fantasy?

Is Gardens of the Moon REALLY the hardest start to a fantasy series? Steven Erikson’s opening novel in Malazan Book of the Fallen has developed an almost legendary reputation. Huge cast. Minimal exposition. Warrens. Ascendants. Gods. Empires. Ancient races. Political conflicts already underway. Characters talking about people, places, and events as though YOU should already know what they mean. For some readers, it’s exhilarating. For others…it’s enough to make them quietly put the book back on the shelf. In this episode of Fantasy for the Ages, Jim and Zach take a deep dive into the intimidating reputation of Gardens of the Moon and ask a simple question: Is the book REALLY that difficult—or has the fantasy community made Malazan scarier than it actually is? We’ll break down exactly WHY first-time readers can struggle with Gardens of the Moon, including Erikson’s limited exposition, enormous cast, complex worldbuilding, mysterious magic, and decision to drop readers directly into a story that already feels like it has thousands of years of history behind it. But we’re also separating FACT from MYTH. Do you really understand NOTHING on your first read? Do you need a companion guide? Is the confusion evidence of bad writing—or intentional storytelling? And do you really have to “survive” Gardens of the Moon before Malazan gets good? Then we widen the battlefield. Because if Gardens of the Moon isn’t fantasy’s hardest first book…what is? We’ll compare it with other challenging fantasy beginnings. Can you guess what will be coming here? And ultimately, Jim and Zach have to render a verdict: Does Gardens of the Moon actually deserve its reputation? 💬 We want YOUR take! Was Gardens of the Moon difficult on your first read? Did you love being thrown into the deep end—or nearly drown? And what fantasy series has the HARDEST first book you’ve ever encountered? Deadhouse Landing: Malazan Empire Origins You Were Never Told!

Deadhouse Landing feels like the best fan fiction ever written… except the fan writing it is actually one of the creators! In this spoiler-lite review, Jim dives into Ian C. Esslemont’s Deadhouse Landing, Book 2 of the Path to Ascendancy series, and explores how it brings the origins of the Malazan Empire to life. For longtime Malazan fans, this book is an absolute TREASURE TROVE. We finally get to see the roots of the Malazan Empire, origin stories for a ridiculous number of familiar characters, more insight into Surly, and—perhaps best of all—more of the wonderfully entertaining relationship between Kellanved and Dancer. After reading Steven Erikson’s Malazan Book of the Fallen and Esslemont’s Novels of the Malazan Empire, Jim has been working his way through the prequel material. And while Erikson’s Malazan novels often leave him impressed, wowed, and occasionally wondering whether he needs a philosophy degree… Esslemont’s books are just plain FUN. And Deadhouse Landing may be Jim’s favorite Esslemont novel yet. In this episode: • Why Jim continued with Path to Ascendancy after Dancer’s Lament • A spoiler-lite summary of Deadhouse Landing • Seven reasons to LOVE this book • The true roots of the Malazan Empire • Origin stories for SO MANY familiar characters • Why Jim finally understands Surly • Why Kellanved and Dancer remain worth the price of admission • The action, humor, and whimsical side of Malazan • Three reasons this book might NOT work for you • Why you absolutely should NOT start your Malazan journey here • Jim’s final verdict on Deadhouse Landing For Jim, Deadhouse Landing is like discovering the greatest collection of Malazan fan fiction imaginable—except it comes directly from Ian C. Esslemont, one of the two men who actually CREATED these characters, their histories, and this incredible world. The result? Dancer’s Lament was good. Deadhouse Landing was FREAKIN’ FANTASTIC. But there’s a catch: If you haven’t already read Malazan Book of the Fallen and the Novels of the Malazan Empire, Jim strongly recommends waiting. So much of the pleasure comes from recognizing these characters, places, relationships, and events—and suddenly understanding how everything you already know came together. Malazan fans: Where does Deadhouse Landing rank among Esslemont’s novels for you? And who is your favorite character to encounter in their younger, pre-Empire form? Let us know in the comments! I Read the First 5 Necroscope Books: Was the Ending Worth It?

Brian Lumley’s original Necroscope saga has reached its grand finale! After five books filled with vampires, psychic espionage, horrifying body transformations, alternate dimensions, and the increasingly complicated life of Harry Keogh, does Deadspawn actually manage to LAND THE PLANE? In this spoiler-lite review, Jim takes a look at Deadspawn, Book 5 of Brian Lumley’s Necroscope series and the conclusion to the original five-book story arc. And Lumley had a LOT to resolve. Harry Keogh is changing. E-Branch isn’t entirely sure they can trust him. Old plot threads are returning. Vampirism continues to become stranger—and considerably more disgusting—and Lumley is pulling together ideas and conflicts stretching all the way back to the beginning of the series. We’ll discuss: • How Deadspawn pays off storylines from the previous four books • Harry Keogh as…the villain?! Well, sort of. It’s complicated. • The absolutely breakneck pacing • Lumley’s endlessly inventive—and horrifying—approach to vampires • Why the ending is BRILLIANT • Why that same ending might also be a little TOO convenient • Whether Deadspawn provides a satisfying stopping point for Necroscope Jim committed to reading the original five-book Necroscope arc after loving the first book. Now that the journey is complete, was it worth it? Ohhhhh, yes. But is this really the end of Jim’s Necroscope journey? For now… Probably. Have you read Deadspawn? Did Brian Lumley successfully stick the landing? And should Jim eventually continue into the Vampire World books? Let us know in the comments! L3X1 Review: Don't Let This Cyberpunk Novel's Cover Scare You Off!

Can you really take a cyberpunk novel seriously when it has a cover like THAT? 😆 As it turns out...YES. You absolutely can. In this spoiler-lite Fantasy for the Ages review, Jim dives into L3X1 by R.C. Grabowski, an independently published cyberpunk science-fiction adventure that surprised him with fantastic worldbuilding, intense action, an intriguing mystery, and a cast of characters he genuinely enjoyed. But there’s a catch. Jim gave L3X1 only 3 stars on Goodreads—and he’s actually frustrated about it. Because underneath some questionable sexualization, shallow relationships, spectacularly over-the-top violence, and possibly the greatest plot armor in the history of cyberpunk, there’s a novel Jim thinks could have been a FIVE-STAR read. So what went right? What went wrong? And why, despite his criticisms, is Jim absolutely interested in reading the sequel? Join us for a spoiler-lite look at an indie cyberpunk novel that deserves some attention! 📚 BOOK DISCUSSED: L3X1 by R.C. Grabowski Cyberpunk / Science Fiction / Action Thriller Book 1 of the planned L3X1 Trilogy IN THIS EPISODE: ⚡ Fantastic cyberpunk worldbuilding 🔫 Intense, cinematic action 🤖 Infiltrators, augmentation & futuristic technology 🕵️ A mystery that gets more intriguing as the story unfolds 😂 Humor amid the violence and chaos 🔥 The sexual content that seriously hurt Jim’s rating 🛡️ And plot armor so powerful it may qualify as its own cybernetic enhancement A huge THANK YOU to R.C. Grabowski for reaching out and providing Jim with a beautiful signed deluxe edition of the book. As always, receiving a review copy has no impact on our opinions or ratings. Have you read L3X1? Can Harry Keogh Survive Without His Powers? | Deadspeak Analysis

Four books into Brian Lumley’s *Necroscope* series, you might think we’d have a pretty good handle on psychic espionage, conversations with the dead, and some of the nastiest vampires in horror. Apparently Brian Lumley disagrees. 😳 In this spoiler-lite review, Jim dives into *Deadspeak*, Book 4 of the original five-book *Necroscope* arc—and the larger story is becoming clearer, stranger, and considerably more dangerous. Harry Keogh has a BIG problem: what happens when the Necroscope loses the very powers that made him the Necroscope? And more importantly... *WHAT IN THE WORLD IS HARRY THINKING?!* Jim discusses: • 🧛 Why Lumley’s vampires remain unlike almost anything else in vampire fiction • 💀 What happens when Harry Keogh has to operate without his usual abilities • 🧠 How the psychic-spy elements continue to distinguish *Necroscope* from other horror series • 📚 How *Deadspeak* builds brilliantly upon the first three books • 🩸 The expanding history and mythology of Lumley’s vampires • ⚡ Why the brisk pacing makes this series so ridiculously easy to keep reading • 🤔 Why parts of *Deadspeak* clearly point toward the original arc’s conclusion in Book 5 • 😱 And the decision Harry makes that had Jim practically yelling, “NO, HARRY! NO!” *This review is SPOILER-LITE.* We’ll discuss the premise, characters, themes, and Jim’s overall reaction without revealing the book’s biggest surprises. If you’ve read *Deadspeak*, where does it rank among the original *Necroscope* novels for you? Oath of Gold Review: THIS Is How You Write a Paladin!

Can a fantasy hero be genuinely good—humble, selfless, faithful, and committed to doing what’s right—and still be fascinating? Elizabeth Moon’s Oath of Gold answers that question with a resounding YES. In this spoiler-lite review, I’m wrapping up The Deed of Paksenarrion trilogy, a classic fantasy series that has thoroughly won me over. After everything Paks endured in Divided Allegiance, Oath of Gold brings her journey to a powerful conclusion—and delivers one of the most compelling portrayals of a paladin I’ve encountered in fantasy. We’ll talk about: ⚔️ The tremendous payoffs Moon delivers after three books 🛡️ Why Paks’s goodness, humility, and conviction make her MORE interesting, not less 🔥 The extraordinary role of sacrifice in her journey ✨ Faith, service, and living for something greater than yourself 🏰 The increasingly rich worldbuilding of Elizabeth Moon’s classic fantasy setting 😬 And why some of what Paks endures may be too much for certain readers I’ll also discuss a potential criticism involving Paks’s agency, why the trilogy’s unapologetically classic approach to fantasy will delight some readers and turn off others, and whether Oath of Gold sticks the landing after everything the first two books set in motion. For me, this trilogy has done something particularly dangerous: it convinced me to add Elizabeth Moon’s other books set in this world to my TBR. Because clearly that pile needed help getting larger. Have you read The Deed of Paksenarrion? Is Paks one of the greatest paladins in fantasy? And which book in the trilogy is your favorite? The Gunslinger: Why It’s a Polarizing Start to The Dark Tower

“The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed.” With one of the most iconic opening lines in modern fantasy, Stephen King launched readers into The Dark Tower, a sprawling, strange, genre-defying epic unlike almost anything else he has ever written. In this episode of Fantasy for the Ages, Zach and Jim take a spoiler-lite look at The Gunslinger, the first book in King’s legendary Dark Tower series. Jim comes to this one as a longtime Dark Tower fan who has journeyed to the Tower multiple times. As a first-time reader, Zach brings his own perspective to Roland Deschain’s haunting trek across a dying world. Together, we dig into what makes The Gunslinger so memorable — and why it can also be such a challenging introduction to the series. For readers encountering The Dark Tower for the first time, we’ll keep the major revelations ahead safely out of reach. And for Constant Readers who already know that Ka is a wheel, there should be plenty here to revisit and debate. Whether you love The Gunslinger, struggled with it, or have been wondering for years whether it’s finally time to begin the journey toward the Dark Tower, join us for the discussion. 👇 YOUR TURN: What do you think of The Gunslinger? Where does it rank among the Dark Tower books—and would you recommend it to someone completely new to Stephen King? Why Divided Allegiance Is Such a BRUTAL Fantasy Sequel

Divided Allegiance takes everything Elizabeth Moon established in Sheepfarmer’s Daughter and asks a much harder question: What happens when Paksenarrion leaves behind the life that made her a warrior and begins searching for what she’s truly meant to become? In this spoiler-lite review, Jim continues his journey through Elizabeth Moon’s classic The Deed of Paksenarrion trilogy with Book 2, Divided Allegiance. After absolutely loving the classic fantasy charm of the first novel, expectations were high—and there was no chance Jim was waiting long to continue! We’ll look at how Divided Allegiance expands Paks’s world, why her sincerity and goodness make her such an appealing protagonist, Elizabeth Moon’s rich but accessible prose, and the surprising brutality Moon is willing to inflict upon her heroine. This is a considerably bigger—and at times darker—story than its predecessor, and it sets the stage beautifully for the trilogy’s conclusion, Oath of Gold. Is Divided Allegiance another classic fantasy winner? And does it make Jim even more excited to finish The Deed of Paksenarrion? Watch and find out! 💬 Have you read Divided Allegiance? How does it rank among the three Paksenarrion books for you? Talisman: A Time Travel Mystery – A Hidden Gem or Just Another Paradox?

Time travel stories can be dangerous territory. Paradoxes, alternate timelines, confusing rules—and sometimes enough plot holes to swallow the entire space-time continuum! So what happens when Jim takes a chance on Talisman: A Time Travel Mystery by Tom Catalano? In this spoiler-lite review, Jim looks at Catalano’s accessible blend of mystery, thriller, and science fiction, centered around a mysterious golden artifact with an extraordinary connection to time. After the author reached out and offered a review copy, Jim decided to venture a little outside his usual reading territory—and see whether this time-travel mystery was worth the risk. We’ll discuss:⏳ The mysterious time-travel premise📖 Catalano’s simple, accessible writing style🕰️ The novel’s approach to timelines and changing events🏃 Why the pacing keeps the story moving👤 Where the characterization falls short🤔 Whether the book offers enough depth for more demanding readers⭐ And Jim’s final verdict: Is Talisman worth your time? This isn't a dense, mind-bending examination of temporal physics. Instead, Talisman offers a quick, straightforward speculative mystery that asks a wonderfully dangerous question:What would YOU do if you possessed something that allowed you to mess with time?Join Jim for the review—and then tell us in the comments: Do you enjoy time-travel stories, or do you normally stay far, far away from them? ⚔️ GODSGRAVE — Does Nevernight Get Even Better? ⚔️

Jay Kristoff certainly didn’t ease off the accelerator. After Nevernight introduced us to Mia Corvere, the deadly Red Church, and one of the bloodiest, snarkiest revenge quests in modern fantasy, Godsgrave takes the Nevernight Chronicle in some VERY different directions. In this episode of Fantasy for the Ages, Zach returns to share his spoiler-lite thoughts on Godsgrave, Book 2 of Jay Kristoff’s Nevernight Chronicle. He loved Nevernight — but does the sequel live up to that impressive beginning? Or does it do something even better?Jim hasn’t read the trilogy yet, so he’s coming at this one from the perspective of someone trying very hard to decide just how quickly these books need to move up his already dangerously overloaded TBR. And based on what Zach has to say about Godsgrave… that decision may be getting easier. We discuss:⚔️ How Godsgrave builds upon Nevernight🏛️ The book’s dramatic new setting and direction🩸 Mia Corvere’s continued development🔥 The action, violence, intrigue, and VERY adult content😂 Kristoff’s distinctive humor and footnotes📚 Whether Book 2 avoids the dreaded middle-book slump⭐ Zach’s final rating and recommendation🤔 And whether Jim is now officially running out of excuses not to start this trilogy! This is a spoiler-lite review, so if you haven’t read Godsgrave yet, you can join us without having the book’s biggest surprises ruined.Have you read Godsgrave? Everything You Need to Know About Too Like the Lightning (Spoilers)

Jim is joined by Matt from Geaux Read Books and Derek from D&J’s Epic Quest to tackle one of the strangest, smartest, most ambitious—and potentially most frustrating—science fiction novels we’ve discussed on Fantasy for the Ages: Ada Palmer’s Too Like the Lightning. And this time, the spoilers are completely unleashed. The first novel in Palmer’s Terra Ignota series throws us into a 25th-century Earth where nations as we know them have largely disappeared, people organize themselves into global “Hives,” religion is intensely private, gendered language has become taboo…and our narrator, Mycroft Canner, may not exactly be the person you want guiding you through any of it.So naturally, we have A LOT to talk about. In this full-spoiler discussion, Jim, Matt, and Derek dig into:⚡ Our overall reactions to Too Like the Lightning🌎 Ada Palmer’s wildly ambitious vision of the future🧠 Whether the enormous amount of worldbuilding enhances—or overwhelms—the story👀 Mycroft Canner and the question of the unreliable narrator⚖️ The novel’s complicated approach to morality, crime, punishment, and power⛪ Religion, faith, and why Palmer’s future society treats them so carefully♂️♀️ Gender, identity, and Mycroft’s deliberately provocative use of language🏛️ The Hives and whether this political system actually makes sense😲 Bridger, miracles, and the increasingly bizarre implications of what is happening📚 The book’s unusual 18th-century-inspired narrative style🐢 Pacing—and whether you need some serious patience to get through this one🔥 What worked brilliantly for each of us…and what absolutely did not➡️ And, most importantly: Are we interested enough to continue the Terra Ignota series?SPOILER WARNING: This is a FULL SPOIL discussion. Is Magic in Fantasy Actually Dangerous? A Christian Perspective

Can Christians love fantasy filled with elaborate magic systems without compromising their faith? Or is there a point where fictional magic crosses a spiritual line? In this episode of Fantasy for the Ages, Jim tackles a question that has followed Christian fantasy fans for decades: Are faith and fantasy truly compatible? We move beyond the old “magic = bad” debate to look at what fantasy stories are actually doing with magic. Along the way, Jim explores Tolkien’s concept of subcreation, the difference between fictional magic that functions almost like physics and magic tied to worship or occult practices, and why the moral framework surrounding supernatural power may matter far more than whether somebody happens to be throwing fireballs. We’ll also discuss: ⚔️ The lingering influence of the Satanic Panic on Christian attitudes toward fantasy 🧙 Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and the Christian tradition of imaginative storytelling ✨ Hard vs. soft magic systems—and why Brandon Sanderson provides some fascinating examples 🙏 The difference between depicting occult practices and encouraging them📖 How Christians can develop a thoughtful framework for discerning what they read ❤️ Why the better question may be not “Does this story contain magic?” but “What is this story doing to my heart?” 🌎 How fantasy can open surprisingly powerful conversations about morality, sacrifice, redemption, good, evil, and ultimately the Gospel Jim also considers why Christians can arrive at different boundaries in matters of conscience—and why those disagreements should produce thoughtful conversation rather than judgment. So where do YOU draw the line? Has fictional magic ever made you uncomfortable? Or has fantasy actually strengthened your appreciation for faith, creation, sacrifice, and redemption? Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 Review — Not as Good… But CLOSE!

Freddy Fazbear got me once… could he do it AGAIN? 😱🐻 After being genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed the first Five Nights at Freddy’s movie, I jumped straight into Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 (2025) the very next day. And remember—I’ve never played the games, so I’m experiencing this increasingly bizarre mythology completely through the movies! In this spoiler-lite review, I’m digging into what worked, what didn’t, and whether this sequel manages to escape the dreaded horror-sequel curse. We’ll talk about: 🎬 The returning characters that made the first movie work 🤖 More fantastic animatronics and creature effects 👻 A MUCH bigger mythology—and yes, a creepy ghost marionette ⭐ Vanessa’s expanded role 😬 Why these movies still aren’t quite scary enough ⏱️ Some sequel-sized pacing problems 🔥 And whether Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 lives up to the surprisingly enjoyable original I didn’t think the sequel quite matched the first film—but it came awfully close. Somehow, despite starting this journey completely skeptical of supernatural pizza-restaurant mascots, I’m now invested in this franchise. Freddy still delivers! Have you seen Five Nights at Freddy’s 2? Which movie do you prefer? And if you’re a fan of the games, how do you think the movies are handling the lore? The Greatest Fantasy, Science Fiction, and Horror Debut Novels of the 2010s

The 2010s introduced an extraordinary generation of fantasy, science-fiction, and horror authors—but which debut novels made the strongest lasting impression? In this episode, Jim travels year by year through the decade, selecting the best debut fantasy novel, science-fiction novel, and horror novel published in every year from 2010 through 2019. Thirty winning books — plus thirty runners-up representing some of the decade’s closest decisions. Every eligible book had to meet one strict requirement: it must have been the author’s first published novel of any kind—not merely a first book in a series, first adult novel, first speculative novel, or first release from a major publisher. The selections balance: • The quality of the debut itself • Awards and professional recognition • Originality and influence • Continued readership • Long-term reputation • The importance of the career, series, or fictional universe it launched Some winners became major bestsellers. Some launched beloved series. Some transformed their genres. And a few remain remarkable books still waiting for more readers to discover them. Jim also examines what changed across speculative fiction during the decade and reveals his personal fantasy, science-fiction, and horror picks from among all thirty winners. Which selection did Jim get exactly right? Which runner-up deserved the victory? And what overlooked debut from the 2010s should have made the list? I Was WRONG About the Five Nights at Freddy’s Movie!

I completely dismissed Five Nights at Freddy’s when it hit theaters in 2023. Killer animatronics at a creepy old pizza restaurant? The trailers did absolutely NOTHING for me. Well… apparently I was wrong. In this spoiler-lite Fantasy for the Ages review, Jim finally checks out Five Nights at Freddy’s, starring Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio, and Matthew Lillard—and discovers a horror movie that’s far more entertaining, creative, and surprisingly heartfelt than expected. We’ll dig into what makes the movie work, including the wonderfully creepy animatronics, the mystery surrounding Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, some familiar actors in unexpected roles, and an excellent young performance from Piper Rubio. We’ll also talk about where the movie struggles, why its bizarre premise requires a healthy dose of suspension of disbelief, and whether seasoned horror fans will actually find it scary. And one important disclaimer: I’ve never played the Five Nights at Freddy’s video games. This review comes entirely from the perspective of someone experiencing this world for the first time through the movie. So, can a horror movie about murderous pizza-restaurant mascots actually have charm and warmth? Apparently YES. And it surprised me enough that I immediately moved on to the sequel! Have you seen Five Nights at Freddy’s? Were you already a fan of the games, or did you discover Freddy and the gang through the movie? Zach has entered the Church of Nevernight… and apparently he’s ready to evangelize. 😄 In this episode of Fantasy for the Ages, Zach takes the lead as we dive into Nevernight by Jay Kristoff, the first book in the Nevernight Chronicle—and a dark fantasy packed with assassins, revenge, deadly training, vicious competition, plenty of blood, and Kristoff’s famously snarky style. Zach recently finished the book and LOVED it, so he breaks down what made Nevernight work so well for him. We talk about Mia Corvere and her quest for vengeance, the distinctive world Kristoff has created, the assassin-school setting, the unusual narrative style and footnotes, the characters, the darkness, and all the wonderfully deadly craziness that comes with becoming one of the Red Church’s finest killers. And Jim? He hasn’t read Nevernight yet—but every Jay Kristoff book is already on his TBR, so Zach gets the opportunity to make the case for why this one needs to move significantly closer to the top of the pile. Is Nevernight worth starting? Is the darkness part of the appeal—or potentially a reason to stay away? And does Zach’s enthusiasm finally push Jim into beginning the Nevernight Chronicle? We keep this discussion spoiler-lite, so you can safely watch if you’re considering reading the book yourself. If you’ve read Nevernight, tell us what you thought!
