Fantasy for the Ages

Jim Scriven

Jim (Father) and Zach (Son) talk about their ideas and perspectives on fantasy fiction, starting with Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time series but straying in various other directions as well. The generational difference in how they view what they read will become obvious (and entertaining, they hope!). Come enjoy our debates and explorations over what all these books mean, and see who you agree with.

Talisman: A Time Travel Mystery – A Hidden Gem or Just Another Paradox?

Time travel stories can be dangerous territory. Paradoxes, alternate timelines, confusing rules—and sometimes enough plot holes to swallow the entire space-time continuum! So what happens when Jim takes a chance on Talisman: A Time Travel Mystery by Tom Catalano? In this spoiler-lite review, Jim looks at Catalano’s accessible blend of mystery, thriller, and science fiction, centered around a mysterious golden artifact with an extraordinary connection to time. After the author reached out and offered a review copy, Jim decided to venture a little outside his usual reading territory—and see whether this time-travel mystery was worth the risk. We’ll discuss:⏳ The mysterious time-travel premise📖 Catalano’s simple, accessible writing style🕰️ The novel’s approach to timelines and changing events🏃 Why the pacing keeps the story moving👤 Where the characterization falls short🤔 Whether the book offers enough depth for more demanding readers⭐ And Jim’s final verdict: Is Talisman worth your time? This isn't a dense, mind-bending examination of temporal physics. Instead, Talisman offers a quick, straightforward speculative mystery that asks a wonderfully dangerous question:What would YOU do if you possessed something that allowed you to mess with time?Join Jim for the review—and then tell us in the comments: Do you enjoy time-travel stories, or do you normally stay far, far away from them? ⚔️ GODSGRAVE — Does Nevernight Get Even Better? ⚔️

Jay Kristoff certainly didn’t ease off the accelerator. After Nevernight introduced us to Mia Corvere, the deadly Red Church, and one of the bloodiest, snarkiest revenge quests in modern fantasy, Godsgrave takes the Nevernight Chronicle in some VERY different directions. In this episode of Fantasy for the Ages, Zach returns to share his spoiler-lite thoughts on Godsgrave, Book 2 of Jay Kristoff’s Nevernight Chronicle. He loved Nevernight — but does the sequel live up to that impressive beginning? Or does it do something even better?Jim hasn’t read the trilogy yet, so he’s coming at this one from the perspective of someone trying very hard to decide just how quickly these books need to move up his already dangerously overloaded TBR. And based on what Zach has to say about Godsgrave… that decision may be getting easier. We discuss:⚔️ How Godsgrave builds upon Nevernight🏛️ The book’s dramatic new setting and direction🩸 Mia Corvere’s continued development🔥 The action, violence, intrigue, and VERY adult content😂 Kristoff’s distinctive humor and footnotes📚 Whether Book 2 avoids the dreaded middle-book slump⭐ Zach’s final rating and recommendation🤔 And whether Jim is now officially running out of excuses not to start this trilogy! This is a spoiler-lite review, so if you haven’t read Godsgrave yet, you can join us without having the book’s biggest surprises ruined.Have you read Godsgrave? Everything You Need to Know About Too Like the Lightning (Spoilers)

Jim is joined by Matt from Geaux Read Books and Derek from D&J’s Epic Quest to tackle one of the strangest, smartest, most ambitious—and potentially most frustrating—science fiction novels we’ve discussed on Fantasy for the Ages: Ada Palmer’s Too Like the Lightning. And this time, the spoilers are completely unleashed. The first novel in Palmer’s Terra Ignota series throws us into a 25th-century Earth where nations as we know them have largely disappeared, people organize themselves into global “Hives,” religion is intensely private, gendered language has become taboo…and our narrator, Mycroft Canner, may not exactly be the person you want guiding you through any of it.So naturally, we have A LOT to talk about. In this full-spoiler discussion, Jim, Matt, and Derek dig into:⚡ Our overall reactions to Too Like the Lightning🌎 Ada Palmer’s wildly ambitious vision of the future🧠 Whether the enormous amount of worldbuilding enhances—or overwhelms—the story👀 Mycroft Canner and the question of the unreliable narrator⚖️ The novel’s complicated approach to morality, crime, punishment, and power⛪ Religion, faith, and why Palmer’s future society treats them so carefully♂️♀️ Gender, identity, and Mycroft’s deliberately provocative use of language🏛️ The Hives and whether this political system actually makes sense😲 Bridger, miracles, and the increasingly bizarre implications of what is happening📚 The book’s unusual 18th-century-inspired narrative style🐢 Pacing—and whether you need some serious patience to get through this one🔥 What worked brilliantly for each of us…and what absolutely did not➡️ And, most importantly: Are we interested enough to continue the Terra Ignota series?SPOILER WARNING: This is a FULL SPOIL discussion. If you haven’t read Too Like the Lightning, we strongly recommend doing so before joining us. Is Magic in Fantasy Actually Dangerous? A Christian Perspective

Can Christians love fantasy filled with elaborate magic systems without compromising their faith? Or is there a point where fictional magic crosses a spiritual line? In this episode of Fantasy for the Ages, Jim tackles a question that has followed Christian fantasy fans for decades: Are faith and fantasy truly compatible? We move beyond the old “magic = bad” debate to look at what fantasy stories are actually doing with magic. Along the way, Jim explores Tolkien’s concept of subcreation, the difference between fictional magic that functions almost like physics and magic tied to worship or occult practices, and why the moral framework surrounding supernatural power may matter far more than whether somebody happens to be throwing fireballs. We’ll also discuss: ⚔️ The lingering influence of the Satanic Panic on Christian attitudes toward fantasy 🧙 Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and the Christian tradition of imaginative storytelling ✨ Hard vs. soft magic systems—and why Brandon Sanderson provides some fascinating examples 🙏 The difference between depicting occult practices and encouraging them📖 How Christians can develop a thoughtful framework for discerning what they read ❤️ Why the better question may be not “Does this story contain magic?” but “What is this story doing to my heart?” 🌎 How fantasy can open surprisingly powerful conversations about morality, sacrifice, redemption, good, evil, and ultimately the Gospel Jim also considers why Christians can arrive at different boundaries in matters of conscience—and why those disagreements should produce thoughtful conversation rather than judgment. So where do YOU draw the line? Has fictional magic ever made you uncomfortable? Or has fantasy actually strengthened your appreciation for faith, creation, sacrifice, and redemption? Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 Review — Not as Good… But CLOSE!

Freddy Fazbear got me once… could he do it AGAIN? 😱🐻 After being genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed the first Five Nights at Freddy’s movie, I jumped straight into Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 (2025) the very next day. And remember—I’ve never played the games, so I’m experiencing this increasingly bizarre mythology completely through the movies! In this spoiler-lite review, I’m digging into what worked, what didn’t, and whether this sequel manages to escape the dreaded horror-sequel curse. We’ll talk about: 🎬 The returning characters that made the first movie work 🤖 More fantastic animatronics and creature effects 👻 A MUCH bigger mythology—and yes, a creepy ghost marionette ⭐ Vanessa’s expanded role 😬 Why these movies still aren’t quite scary enough ⏱️ Some sequel-sized pacing problems 🔥 And whether Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 lives up to the surprisingly enjoyable original I didn’t think the sequel quite matched the first film—but it came awfully close. Somehow, despite starting this journey completely skeptical of supernatural pizza-restaurant mascots, I’m now invested in this franchise. Freddy still delivers! Have you seen Five Nights at Freddy’s 2? Which movie do you prefer? And if you’re a fan of the games, how do you think the movies are handling the lore? The Greatest Fantasy, Science Fiction, and Horror Debut Novels of the 2010s

The 2010s introduced an extraordinary generation of fantasy, science-fiction, and horror authors—but which debut novels made the strongest lasting impression? In this episode, Jim travels year by year through the decade, selecting the best debut fantasy novel, science-fiction novel, and horror novel published in every year from 2010 through 2019. Thirty winning books — plus thirty runners-up representing some of the decade’s closest decisions. Every eligible book had to meet one strict requirement: it must have been the author’s first published novel of any kind—not merely a first book in a series, first adult novel, first speculative novel, or first release from a major publisher. The selections balance: • The quality of the debut itself • Awards and professional recognition • Originality and influence • Continued readership • Long-term reputation • The importance of the career, series, or fictional universe it launched Some winners became major bestsellers. Some launched beloved series. Some transformed their genres. And a few remain remarkable books still waiting for more readers to discover them. Jim also examines what changed across speculative fiction during the decade and reveals his personal fantasy, science-fiction, and horror picks from among all thirty winners. Which selection did Jim get exactly right? Which runner-up deserved the victory? And what overlooked debut from the 2010s should have made the list? I Was WRONG About the Five Nights at Freddy’s Movie!

I completely dismissed Five Nights at Freddy’s when it hit theaters in 2023. Killer animatronics at a creepy old pizza restaurant? The trailers did absolutely NOTHING for me. Well… apparently I was wrong. In this spoiler-lite Fantasy for the Ages review, Jim finally checks out Five Nights at Freddy’s, starring Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio, and Matthew Lillard—and discovers a horror movie that’s far more entertaining, creative, and surprisingly heartfelt than expected. We’ll dig into what makes the movie work, including the wonderfully creepy animatronics, the mystery surrounding Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, some familiar actors in unexpected roles, and an excellent young performance from Piper Rubio. We’ll also talk about where the movie struggles, why its bizarre premise requires a healthy dose of suspension of disbelief, and whether seasoned horror fans will actually find it scary. And one important disclaimer: I’ve never played the Five Nights at Freddy’s video games. This review comes entirely from the perspective of someone experiencing this world for the first time through the movie. So, can a horror movie about murderous pizza-restaurant mascots actually have charm and warmth? Apparently YES. And it surprised me enough that I immediately moved on to the sequel! Have you seen Five Nights at Freddy’s? Were you already a fan of the games, or did you discover Freddy and the gang through the movie? Nevernight: This Is Why You Need To Read It Immediately (Zach's Review)

Zach has entered the Church of Nevernight… and apparently he’s ready to evangelize. 😄 In this episode of Fantasy for the Ages, Zach takes the lead as we dive into Nevernight by Jay Kristoff, the first book in the Nevernight Chronicle—and a dark fantasy packed with assassins, revenge, deadly training, vicious competition, plenty of blood, and Kristoff’s famously snarky style. Zach recently finished the book and LOVED it, so he breaks down what made Nevernight work so well for him. We talk about Mia Corvere and her quest for vengeance, the distinctive world Kristoff has created, the assassin-school setting, the unusual narrative style and footnotes, the characters, the darkness, and all the wonderfully deadly craziness that comes with becoming one of the Red Church’s finest killers. And Jim? He hasn’t read Nevernight yet—but every Jay Kristoff book is already on his TBR, so Zach gets the opportunity to make the case for why this one needs to move significantly closer to the top of the pile. Is Nevernight worth starting? Is the darkness part of the appeal—or potentially a reason to stay away? And does Zach’s enthusiasm finally push Jim into beginning the Nevernight Chronicle? We keep this discussion spoiler-lite, so you can safely watch if you’re considering reading the book yourself. If you’ve read Nevernight, tell us what you thought! Did you love Mia’s story as much as Zach did? And where does the Nevernight Chronicle rank among Jay Kristoff’s work? 👍 LIKE the video if you enjoy our reviews. 🔔 SUBSCRIBE and hit the notification bell for more fantasy, science fiction, and horror. 💬 And definitely jump into the comments—we love talking books with you! The vampire apocalypse has reached its end! 🧛‍♂️🌑 In this spoiler-lite review, Jim dives into The Night Eternal by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan, the third and final book in The Strain Trilogy. Magic Burns Review: A Massive Upgrade for Kate Daniels

🔥 BOOK 2 DELIVERS! 🔥 Jim is continuing his journey through the Kate Daniels series with Magic Burns by Ilona Andrews—and this second installment takes a noticeable step up from Magic Bites! Magic and technology are constantly battling for dominance in this post-apocalyptic version of Atlanta, but now a massive magical flare is approaching. That means stronger magic, increasingly dangerous supernatural threats, ancient mysteries…and, naturally, Kate Daniels finding herself directly in the middle of ALL of it. In this spoiler-lite review, Jim breaks down: ⚔️ Why Magic Burns improves on the first book 🔥 The fantastic magic-vs.-technology worldbuilding 🦁 Kate and Curran's increasingly entertaining relationship 🔍 The mysteries surrounding Kate—and why their slow reveal is working ✨ How the magical flare expands the possibilities of this world 🏃 Why the pacing works so much better this time around 📚 And whether Jim is officially committed to finishing all TEN Kate Daniels novels! As a longtime fan of The Dresden Files, Jim is finding plenty to enjoy in Ilona Andrews' distinctive take on urban fantasy. Two books in, the big question is becoming less “Will I continue?” and more “Just how good is this series going to get?” Have you read Magic Burns? Did you think it was an improvement over Magic Bites? And without spoilers for later books, where does it rank among your favorite Kate Daniels novels? John Scalzi’s Old Man’s War series was finished. Or so we thought. Ten years after The End of All Things, Scalzi unexpectedly returned to the universe with The Shattering Peace, the seventh Old Man’s War novel. The Brutal Truth About The Wolf Den: Should You Read It?

What happens when historical fiction takes you into one of the darkest corners of ancient Pompeii—and refuses to look away? In this spoiler-lite Fantasy for the Ages review, Zach takes the lead on Elodie Harper’s The Wolf Den, the first book in her acclaimed trilogy about women struggling to survive, endure, and reclaim some measure of control over their lives in ancient Rome. Our central character, Amara, is an educated young woman who has been sold into slavery and forced to work in a Pompeian brothel. Her circumstances are brutal—but Amara is intelligent, ambitious, resourceful, and determined that the Wolf Den will NOT define the rest of her life. Zach breaks down what makes this novel such a compelling read, while Jim faces an entirely different question: Can Zach actually convince him to add it to his already mountainous TBR? We discuss: 🏛️ Elodie Harper’s immersive recreation of ancient Pompeii 🐺 Amara and the women of the Wolf Den 💔 The novel’s difficult and sometimes brutal subject matter 🤝 Friendship, survival, ambition, and resilience ⚖️ Power, slavery, class, and the struggle for agency 📚 Why Zach recommends the book 👍 Who might LOVE The Wolf Den 👎 Who should probably stay away 🤔 And whether Zach can convince Jim that this historical novel belongs on his TBR! The Wolf Den isn’t exactly the kind of book Jim normally reaches for—but Zach makes a surprisingly compelling case. Does he actually succeed? Have you read The Wolf Den? What did you think? And if you’ve completed the entire trilogy with The House with the Golden Door and The Temple of Fortuna, which book was your favorite? The Mummy 2026 Is Good Horror… But a BAD Mummy Movie

Lee Cronin has dug up The Mummy for a whole new generation—and this is DEFINITELY not the mummy movie you remember! 😱 In this spoiler-lite review, Jim takes a look at Lee Cronin’s The Mummy (2026), the dark, twisted new reimagining from Blumhouse and Atomic Monster. With the director of Evil Dead Rise behind the camera, you can probably guess this isn't exactly Brendan Fraser battling Imhotep while delivering one-liners. We’re talking: ⚰️ How this version completely reinvents Mummy mythology 😱 The seriously disturbing horror Cronin brings to the story 🎭 Strong performances and surprisingly deep worldbuilding 🩸 Some spectacular—and VERY nasty—effects 🏺 How it compares to previous Mummy movies 🤔 Why Jim thinks this is good horror… but a bad Mummy movie 😬 And an ending that requires a LOT of suspension of disbelief Jim has loved the classic Universal Monsters for decades, enjoyed the Brendan Fraser Mummy trilogy, survived the attempted Dark Universe reboot, and appreciated Cronin's Evil Dead Rise. So where does this bizarre new interpretation fit? Is Lee Cronin’s The Mummy a bold reinvention—or did it stray too far from what makes The Mummy… The Mummy? Did John Scalzi Actually Stick the Landing? | The End of All Things Review

The end of a series comes with PRESSURE. After six books of soldiers, aliens, interstellar politics, conspiracies, and John Scalzi’s trademark sarcasm, could The End of All Things actually stick the landing for the original Old Man’s War story arc? In this spoiler-lite Fantasy for the Ages review, Jim dives into the sixth Old Man’s War novel and looks at how well Scalzi brings together the pieces established throughout the series—especially those set up in The Human Division. We’ll talk characters, pacing, humor, the interconnected novella structure, the resolution of the massive conflict, and whether the finale delivers a satisfying payoff. And yes, we know: “The End” wasn’t REALLY the end! Ten years later, Scalzi returned to the Old Man’s War universe with The Shattering Peace in 2025. The Best of Kurt Russell: Ranking His Genre Masterpieces & Messes

Kurt Russell has been a staple of science fiction, fantasy, and horror for DECADES—and somehow, whether the movie is a masterpiece or a mess, Kurt Russell is almost always great. But which of his genre movies is the BEST? And how many have you actually seen? In this Fantasy for the Ages Jim solo episode, I’m ranking EVERY Kurt Russell SFF & horror movie from worst to best! Along the way, I’m also giving Kurt a separate letter grade for his individual performance—because sometimes Kurt Russell is MUCH better than the movie he’s in. We’re talking iconic roles and cult favorites from across his incredible career, including: 🎬 The Thing 🐍 Escape from New York 👽 Stargate 🚛 Big Trouble in Little China 🩸 Bone Tomahawk 🚗 Death Proof 🪖 Soldier 🌎 Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 🦊 The Fox and the Hound 🎅 The Christmas Chronicles 🦸 Sky High…and more! Then, after ranking the movies themselves, I flip the question around: What happens if we ignore the quality of the MOVIE and rank Kurt Russell’s performances instead? That gives us a very different Top 10! Finally, I reveal my own three FAVORITE Kurt Russell genre movies—and critical consensus gets absolutely NO vote in that one. How many of these have YOU seen? What’s your favorite Kurt Russell SFF or horror movie? And what is his single greatest genre performance: MacReady? Snake Plissken? Jack Burton? Todd? Stuntman Mike? Somebody else? I Wasn't Expecting Alien: Earth to Be THIS Good

Could an Alien TV series actually live up to one of the greatest sci-fi horror franchises of all time? I'll admit it—I was skeptical. I've been an Alien fan for years. I own most of the films, I've even enjoyed the Alien vs. Predator entries for what they are, and I've always believed that Ridley Scott's original Alien remains the gold standard because it embraced horror first and science fiction second. So when Alien: Earth was announced, I wasn't convinced a television series could capture that same atmosphere. After waiting until every episode had been released, I finally sat down and (mostly) binged the entire first season—and I came away genuinely impressed.
