A Gentle Touch: Love Languages in Action

“All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others.” - 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (NLT) Sometimes the most loving thing you can do for someone is stop trying to fix their problem and simply be with them. When someone we love is hurting, frustrated, grieving, or just having a bad day, our instinct can be to offer advice, find a solution, or help them see things differently. But sometimes what they really need is much simpler: our presence. A listening ear. Or maybe just a hug. In this episode of Doable Discipleship, Jason explores what we can learn from Job’s friends, who actually got things right before they got them very, very wrong. When they first arrived, they entered into Job’s grief, sat beside him, and remained silent for seven days. It was when they started talking that things began to fall apart. In this episode, we explore: -Why our instinct to “fix” someone’s pain can sometimes get in the way of loving them well -What Job’s friends teach us about the ministry of presence -Why carrying someone’s burden doesn’t necessarily mean trying to remove it -How understanding the ways people give and receive love can help us care for them better -The power of a hug, a gentle touch, or simply sitting with someone who is hurting -How the comfort we receive from God equips us to comfort others Scripture calls us to carry one another’s burdens and to “mourn with those who mourn.” Sometimes discipleship looks less like having the right thing to say and more like being willing to sit beside someone in whatever they are carrying. Ultimately, we love others out of the overflow of the love and comfort we have first received from God. As we abide in Christ and experience His care for us, we can learn to enter into the lives of others with a different goal: not necessarily to fix the problem, but to love the person in the way they most need to be loved. Jesus Looked at Him and Loved Him

“Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. The Invitation to Confession with Jamin Goggin (Rewind)

“The act of confessing our sins to one another is a graced invitation to practice the way of faith, hope, and love. The soul tempted to despair will be particularly allergic to ecclesial confession, but it is here that they will find great remedy for their agonizing condition. For in confessing their sins to one another, they are heard with the faith of fellow saints, they are encouraged by the hope of fellow pilgrims, and they are loved with the charity of brothers and sisters.” - Pastoral Confessions Confession is not an easy topic - but it is a healthy topic. Oftentimes when the topic of confession is brought up, it’s met with one of two responses: 1. "My walls are now up and I’m tuning out what is being talked about." 2. "This is so true and important and a lot of other people have things to confess." But like I said, confession is healthy. And even more than that, confession is necessary. Now I may be biased, but one of the best books on confession releases one week from today - Pastoral Confessions written by my friend Jamin Goggin. Jamin has been on this podcast a few times in the past. He’s an associate professor at Talbot School of Theology, Director of the Healthy Pastor Initiative for Finishing the Task, and one of the most thoughtful theologians I know. In today’s conversation Jamin and I talk about what led him to write about confession, the real human struggles with sin and confession, some ways we can more normalize confession, and much more. The Urgency of Grace in a Worn-Out World (Rewind)

The 𝐼𝑠-𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑠 of God: What it Means to be 𝐵𝑒𝑖𝑛𝑔 Itself with JD Lyonhart

And to show that we can do so in a worshipful, honoring, reverent way. When I first met author and professor J.D. Lyonhart last year to talk about his book The Journey of God, I knew I met a fellow compatriot in this mission. His books are incredibly fun and funny, while wrestling with deep philosophical, Biblical issues. His latest book is called Zeus was an Atheist: An Odd Retelling of the Moses Story. Even the title elicits a chuckle. The book puts you in the mind of Moses, not from a “this is surely what he was thinking” standpoint, but, yes, an odd retelling standpoint. We walk with Moses through all of the Exodus events you know, but listen as Moses wrestles with, meditates on, and acknowledges who God is - Being, Beauty, Goodness, Truth, Justice. J.D. Lyonhart is Associate Professor of Religion and Philosophy at the University of Jamestown a Fellow at the Cambridge Centre for the Study of Platonism at Cambridge University, and cohost of the Spiritually Incorrect Podcast. Navigating the Bible: The Message of the New Testament with Ben Witherington III

In August of 2024 I started a series called Navigating the Bible with the goal of talking about every book of the Bible. I didn’t know at the time how long it would take. I didn’t know who would say yes to coming on with me to talk about these books. But now, just about two years later, this is the final episode of the series. I may do some additional episodes down the line about to add things here or there, but today’s episode is a bit of a capstone for the Navigating the Bible series. The New Testament is, rightfully so, all about Jesus. The Gospels are the accounts of Jesus’ life and ministry on earth. The epistles are about the living out the reality of Jesus. Navigating the Bible: Revelation

“Then I looked again, and I heard the voices of thousands and millions of angels around the throne and of the living beings and the elders. And they sang in a mighty chorus: ‘Worthy is the Lamb who was slaughtered - to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing.’ And then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea. They sang: ‘Blessing and honor and glory and power belong to the one sitting on the throne and to the Lamb forever and ever.’” - Revelation 5:11-13 Revelation, the final book of the Bible, and perhaps the most, “what am I to do with this?”. Revelation is known for its complexity, but, at its heart, is a beautiful message of hope, worship, and love. I’m going to be up front with you: if you are looking for insight and answers to all of the many elements of Revelation, this is not the podcast for you. We won’t be talking about seals, beasts, dragons, the 144,00 - you know, what some people may call the greatest hits of Revelation. Navigating the Bible: 1, 2 & 3 John

“Dear friends, I am not writing a new commandment for you; rather it is an old one you have had from the very beginning. This old commandment - to love one another - is the same message you heard before. Yet it is also new. Jesus lived the truth of this commandment , and you also are living it. For the darkness is disappearing, and the true light is already shining.” 1 John 2:7-8 John’s epistles, 1, 2, and 3 John, are a beautiful extension from John’s Gospel. John continues his central themes of abiding and living out the call to love one another while spending considerable time on a new theme: confidence in salvation. John talks a lot about sin, about false teachers, about issues of the heart - but he does all of this under the cloak of what it means to be a child of God, to be in fellowship with Jesus, and to love one another. Navigating the Bible: 2 Peter/Jude

“In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone. The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” 2 Peter 1:5-8 I’m going to start with something obvious. 2 Peter and Jude aren’t next to each other in the biblical order. So, why are these books so often linked? Wouldn’t it make more sense to do 1 Peter and 2 Peter together? Our guest today does well to explain why these letters are linked but I’ll spoil a little of it here because these letters hit hard on a similar theme: pursuing virtue. These are letters of encouragement - reminders to readers to be aware of false teachers and the trappings of the world and to focus steadfastly on the virtuous way of Christ. These letters are beautiful reminders of God’s love for you as you continue to, quoting Peter, “make every effort to be found living peaceful lives that are pure and blameless in his sight.” To help us navigate 2 Peter and Jude is Peter Davids, retired Professor of Christianity at Houston Baptist University while also have taught at Regent College, Trinity School, and Canadian Theological Seminary and is author of a commentary on 2 Peter and Jude. Before we dive in with Peter, a quick note: When we recorded Peter was mid-move so his internet connection was a little spotty. Navigating the Bible: 1 Peter

“All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with great expectation, and we have a priceless inheritance - an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay.” - 1 Peter 1:3-4 After reading so many letters from Paul, a brief stop in Hebrews, and then a letter from James, we now get to hear from Peter. 1 Peter is a letter of hope - a letter of what it means to be called the family of God and to live that out. It’s a letter of what it means to be a Christian, particularly being a Christian in a time of suffering and persecution. It’s a letter about how to treat one another. It’s a letter about identity, being both living stones and humble sheep. This letter is only five chapters long but it paints a beautiful picture of the Christian life. To help us navigate 1 Peter is Dr. Jeanine Brown, Professor of New Testament at Bethel Seminary and she is currently working on a commentary on 1 Peter. Navigating the Bible: James

“What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone? Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing, and you say, ‘Good-bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well’ - but then you don’t give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do? So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless.” James 2:14-17 I think many people probably fall into one of two camps about James: it’s either one of their favorites or they bristle against it a little bit. This is because James does not pull any punches about what it means to live in a way that focuses and cares for other people. He says, “faith is dead without good works.” He says, “His actions made his faith complete.” He says, “I will show you my faith by my good deeds.” All of this is in the context of what James has to say about helping the poor, the widows and the orphans, and what he has to say about how we handle persecution and trials and what he has to say about how we speak. James is an in your face book in the best of ways. Navigating the Bible: Hebrews

“There were many priests under the old system, for death prevented them from remaining in office. But because Jesus lives forever, his priesthood lasts forever. Therefore he is able, once and forever, to save those who come to God through him. He lives forever to intercede with God on their behalf.” - Hebrews 7:23-25 The book of Hebrews is an interesting first step out of Paul’s letters. In many ways, Hebrews may be even better read earlier in a New Testament reading because it has a heavy focus on Old Testament stories. Hebrews reads like a connector or bridge between Old and New Testaments while, at its heart, being a book of comfort - a book reminding of God’s faithfulness; a book continuously pointing to Christ. Navigating the Bible: Philemon

“I appeal to you to show kindness to my child, Onesimus . . . I wanted you to help because you were willing, not because you were forced . . . He is no longer like a slave to you. He is more than a slave, for he is a beloved brother, especially to me. Now he will mean much more to you, both as a man and as a brother in the Lord.” Philemon vs. 10, 14, and 16. The book of Philemon is unlike any of Paul’s other letters. Or, perhaps I should say it this way, it is unlike any of Paul’s other full letters. We’ve seen Paul admonish or encourage specific people amidst some of his other letters, but here we have a standalone letter from Paul to Philemon asking him a favor regarding Philemon’s slave, Onesimus. This letter is important for many reasons as it teaches us from multiple different angles. What can we learn from what Paul is saying to Philemon? What can we learn from what Paul is saying about Onesimus? And what can we learn from how Paul says these things? Navigating the Bible: Pastoral Epistles

“The purpose of my instruction is that all believers would be filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith. But some people have missed this whole point. They have turned away from these things and spend their time in meaningless discussions. They want to be known as teachers of the law of Moses, but they don’t know what they are talking about, even though they speak so confidently.” - 1 Timothy 1:5-7 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, and Titus are often called the Pastoral Epistles and it’s not too hard to see why. These are letters Paul is writing to his brothers in the faith, Timothy and Titus and right away you see they read differently than the other Pauline letters we’ve been focused on. In the previous letters, Paul was writing to churches - encouraging his church plants as they continue to grow and do ministry without him. In these letters, Paul is mentoring Timothy and Titus in a beautiful way as they minister and the truths he anchors in are still perfectly relevant to us today. Navigating the Bible: 1 & 2 Thessalonians

“So we keep on praying for you, asking our God to enable you to live a life worthy of his call. May he give you the power to accomplish all the good things your faith prompts you to do. Then the name of our Lord Jesus will be honored because of the way you live, and you will be honored along with him. This is all made possible because of the grace of our God and Lord, Jesus Christ.” - 2 Thessalonians 1:11-12 1 and 2 Thessalonians, besides being perhaps the hardest books to say, is a fascinating look at some of Paul’s earliest letters in his ministry journeys. For these letters, as we’ll see from our conversation today, context is highly important because Paul is writing to a new church, new Christians, living in Macedonia during the Roman empire. So as you read these letters, you see Paul showing love and care for a new congregation - answering questions and speaking to issues that were incredibly relevant to their context. But as we’ve said many times, these letters were written to that church, but they are still for us. So how do the themes Paul presents in these letters of remembering, persecution, encouragement, hope and more speak to the Thessalonians and for us? And what is to be done with 2 Thessalonians chapter 2 and the man of lawlessness? Navigating the Bible: Colossians

“So we have not stopped praying for you since we first heard about you. We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding. Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and your lives will produce every kind of good fruit. All the while, you will grow as you learn to know God better and better.” - Colossians 1:9-10 Colossians, to me, seems a bit like a hidden gem amongst the Epistles. It doesn’t have the heft of Romans or the well-known passages like Corinthians. It doesn’t seem to be as popular to read as Galatians, Ephesians or Philippians. It kind of feels like when you’re told we’re going to be studying Colossians it’s met with a . . . yay . . .. But when I went back into Colossians to prepare for this episode, I was surprised to see just how many notes and underlines and whatnot I had made the last time I went through the book. Pound for pound it might be my most underlined Epistle by percentage. Paul’s letter to the Colossians is focused on what it truly means to live in the new life - to live in the way of Christ. Navigating the Bible: Philippians

“And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me - everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.” - Philippians 4:8-9 I think Philippians has a special place in a lot of people’s hearts. This letter from Paul just tends to bring a smile to people. And I think that’s for a couple of reasons. One: it’s a book about joy. Paul mentions a few times to rejoice or that he rejoices and that talk about joy just tends to perk you up. Second: It’s a book of encouragement. Paul continuously points the readers back towards Christ and, in the NLT at least, the section heads include: “Paul’s Joy is that Christ is Preached,” “Have the Attitude of Christ,” “Shine Brightly for Christ,” and “The Priceless Value of Knowing Christ.” Pretty focused and encouraging if I do say so myself. To guide us through Philippians today is Dr. Matthew Harmon, Professor of New Testament Studies at Grace College and Theological Seminary and author of a commentary on Philippians. Navigating the Bible: Ephesians

“God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” Ephesians 2:8-10 Ephesians is, in my view, quite popular right now. There have been a number of new books out recently focused on Ephesians and I’ve seen many churches preaching on the book lately. I would say it as Ephesians is having a moment right now. So what is it about Ephesians that is drawing this attention lately? My guest and I discuss this question in this conversation, but it’s worth noting that Ephesians is about union with Christ, the power of the Spirit, growing in Christlikeness, and unity in the church. Ephesians is a remarkable letter highlighting so many truths for the church to continue to go back to again and again. To help us navigate Ephesians is Dr. Constantine Campbell, Professor of Biblical Studies and Research Director at Australian University College of Divinity. Dr. Campbell has written many books including a commentary on Ephesians. He also teaches jazz performance and saxophone at the Australian National University School of Music so I made sure to ask him about the relationship between Jazz and Ephesians. Navigating the Bible: Galatians

“Don’t be misled - you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant. Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful nature will harvest decay and death from that sinful nature. But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit. So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.” Galatians 6:7-9 Paul’s letter to the Galatians is an early treatise on justification by faith, not by works. Over and over again in this letter the apostle Paul is teaching and reminding us that the law is not what saves us - faith in Christ is what saves. Paul addresses this topic from many different angles, highlighting this truth in many different ways. So our guest today is here to navigate why this was so important. Why is Paul focusing-in on this message so much and what other themes is Paul pointing to in this letter?
