REACT: Buried Bible Podcast on Divorce, Remarriage

On the Buried Bible Podcast ( ⁨@BuriedBiblePodcast⁩ ), archeologist, author, and professor Dr. Mark Chavalas ( ⁨@MarkChavalas⁩ ) brought his expertise to answer an ancient question: What does the New Testament teach about divorce and remarriage? Now, I react to Dr. Chavalas's answers with a different perspective so that you can compare our views. Divorce and Remarriage: When Biblical Interpretation and Moral Intuition Differ

How do we address a circumstance where our reading of the Scriptures disagrees with the adjudication made by our internal sense of right and wrong? This is an important question when reading the New Testament on divorce and remarriage. The practice of divorce and remarriage is common today. The justifications given for it are many. Yet, Jesus teaching seems to differ with the common practice and rationale. More surprising is Jesus's apparent call to divorce remarriages, since he calls them adultery and no one at the time would think Jesus meant to continue a relationship he called adultery. What about the children? What about the disruption? I had to navigate these questions as I wrote my book on this subject. In this episode, I will explore the importance of these questions (dismissing them is a mistake) and how I arrived at my conviction, premised on the Scripture, that adulterous remarriages must be divorced. REACT: The Master's Seminary on Divorce (Dr. Bryan Murphy)

Pastor John MacArthur's seminary, which he founded in 1986, recently released a video featuring Dr. Bryan Murphy's teaching on divorce and remarriage. His interpretation is similar to most evangelicals. I respond to his view so that you can see the contrast and determine which view is closer to the original intent of the biblical authors. David Brainerd: Divorce is Required for Some Remarriages

Jonathan Edwards preached the funeral of famed missionary to the Native Americans: David Brainerd. Edwards also compiled Brainerd's biography, which received acclaim widely. But, few today know that David Brainerd recorded how, when revival came, adulterous remarriages were divorced. David Brainerd insisted on it. Dr. Benjamin Mayes recently wrote a book on divorce and remarriage. His book is premised on historic Lutheran views that have been mostly forgotten in modern Protestantism. Over three episodes, I will react to Dr. Mayes. In this episode, I react to Dr. Mayes's teaching that Jesus permits divorce and remarriage for adultery and Paul permits divorce and remarriage for abandonment. I disagree with both of those claims. I heartily welcome Dr. Mayes emphasis on the ongoing nature of adultery in those marriages Jesus forbade seven times across four passages (Mat 5:32, 19:9, Mar 10:11-12, Luk 16:18). However, I contend that *all* remarriages which Jesus called adultery ought to be divorced while a prior valid spouse lives whereas Dr. Mayes argues only *some* of these adulterous remarriages ought to be divorced. Jesus Rejected Divorce for Adultery

In Mat 19:3, the Pharisees ask Jesus about divorcing for "any cause." Jesus said no. Then, in Mat 19:7 the Pharisees asked about divorcing for the reason Moses (allegedly) commanded. They thought Moses commanded divorce when the woman committed adultery. Jesus rejected that reason for divorce in Mat 19:8. That means the exception clause in Mat 19:9 cannot refer to adultery since Jesus just rejected divorcing for adultery. But, how does that square with the view from John Calvin and others that the Mosaic reason for divorce (ervat dabar in Deu 24:1) couldn't have been for adultery since that received capital punishment (Lev 20, Deu 22, Num 5)? I address that question in this episode of Divorce Your Remarriage. REACT: Corey Minor on Divorce and Remarriage (SmartChristians Podcast)

Corey Minor runs the large SmartChristians podcast and in May 2026, he uploaded an episode about divorce and remarriage ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uSMy4L-fmE ). REACT: Dr. Hershael York on Civilly Unrecognized Marriages

Dr. Hershael York of Southern Seminary on the Pastor Well podcast ( https://youtu.be/athpYa7A6bE?si=3Bmk5HxIXKmArTSK ) provided pastors with advice regarding an unusual question: How should a pastor respond to an older couple who want to cohabitate and call it marriage? In this scenario, the older couple is often incentivized by pension rules to forgo legally remarrying. To keep the pension money and cohabitate, the couple wonders if they can be validly remarried (and have sex) without getting a marriage license. Dr. York provides his advice and I react to his comments. REACT: Adam Robinson on Divorce and Remarriage

YouTuber Adam Robinson discussed Jesus's teaching on divorce and remarriage ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7bMesTO44A ). In his presentation, Adam summarized Jesus's teaching in a way that gave the man more rights than the woman. In doing so, Adam recognized that Jesus's exception clauses in Mat 5:32, 19:9 only provide the man the right to divorce and remarry in the exceptional scenario, not the woman. This poses an insurmountable gender problem for the "adultery" view of the exception clause. Adam "bites the bullet" by accepting a gendered exception despite its inconsistency with the New Testament's gender neutral morality on divorce and remarriage. However, this gender problem is remedied under the "already married" view of the exception clause, as I explain in this episode. REACT: Churches of Christ Remarriage Interpretations

The Churches of Christ inherited a culture of independent thinking from their Restorationist Movement roots. That culture, along with their inherited opposition to denominationalism, creeds, and other instruments of constraint (and unity) causes them to read the Scriptures afresh. That has resulted in a significantly more restrictive view on divorce and remarriage than evangelicalism's majority view. However, not all Church of Christ pastors agree. Pastor Mike Hisaw, on his Progressive Primitivist channel ( @TheProgressivePrimitivist ), shared his current view that a remarriage is a mere one-time act of adultery. The Gospel Broadcast Network ( @GBNTVA ), a major Church of Christ channel, publicly "corrected the error" of Pastor Mike Hisaw. I react to both views, sharing where I agree and disagree.
