Mearsheimer Predicted Ukraine’s Collapse—He Was Wrong Again

John Mearsheimer has repeatedly predicted that Ukraine would collapse, lose the war, or become incapable of holding the line. Yet Ukraine remains standing—and Mearsheimer has now predicted that Russia will control all of Donbas by the end of 2026.

In this video, I examine his record, challenge his latest prediction, and explain why an intelligent and accomplished scholar can continue reaching the same failed conclusion. My argument is not that realism offers nothing useful. It is that Mearsheimer’s theoretical lens causes him to discount leadership, national will, adaptation, technology, institutional performance, and the possibility that Russia is far weaker than its material size suggests.

I also explain Gareth Morgan’s warning that “a way of seeing is a way of not seeing.” Every framework illuminates certain realities while obscuring others. The real test of an analyst is whether he changes his conclusions when the evidence changes.

Mearsheimer says Russia will control all of Donbas by the end of the year. I am publicly challenging that prediction—and offering a $1,000 wager benefiting humanitarian relief in Ukraine.
