Cool Worlds

Cool Worlds

Space, astronomy, exoplanets, astroengineering and the search for extraterrestrial life & intelligence.

The Cool Worlds Lab (http://coolworldslab.com), based at the Department of Astronomy, Columbia University, is a team of astronomers seeking to discover and understand alien worlds, particularly those where temperatures are cool enough for life, led by Professor David Kipping.

    Semantics

Lately there has been a growing push-back from the exoplanet community for astronomers to stop using the phrase "Earth-like". In this video, we get into the arguments being made and some reasons why I am personally finding the movement unpalatable. This is a topic ripe for public discussion so please watch through then let us know in the comments section what your opinion is! The Habitable Zone: Undergraduate Outreach Project

This semester I taught "Exoplanets & Astrobiology" at Columbia and decided to do something a bit non-traditional and ask my class to make outreach videos in any style they want about a topic we covered in class. This video, by Elliotte Jun Beom Lee, Natalie Gaisser & Huiying Zhang was voted the class favorite and so I decided to upload it on the Cool Worlds channel to share with everyone! Let us know what you think and if you have any questions about habitable-zones. Is It Possible to Learn The Language of Planets?

Could we learn to "speak planet"? Computational linguistics is now found in your smart phone, car and speakers, making sense of our speech and text. Could these same algorithms make sense of exoplanets? Join us today as we explore a radical new research idea recently published by the Cool Worlds Lab. Written and Presented by Dr Emily Sandford. What If Intelligence Re-Emerges?

Visit our sponsor, Brilliant.org: https://brilliant.org/CoolWorlds. Astronomers are on a quest to search for life in the Universe. Two different pathways lay ahead for this hunt, biosignatures and technosignatures. Today, we discuss the arguments for and against each and consider that intelligence could be a far more persistent phenomenon that we might naively think - with important consequences for astronomers... Head to an exoplanet seminar or conference and you'll constantly hear astronomers talking about "the Cosmic Shoreline". But - what the heck is that? Why is it so important? How to Characterize Proxima b's Atmosphere

As regular watchers of the channel may remember, this summer astronomers announced the discovery of a potentially Earth-like planet orbiting our nearest star, Proxima Centauri. Sadly, research at the Cool Worlds Lab was unable to find any evidence that Proxima b transits its star, which is a blow for those hoping for near-term characterization of its atmosphere. But! Dr Jayne Birkby comes to the rescue and explains here how an alternative technique should work if we can wait a few years! Thanks to Jayne for visiting the lab and giving us all some hope for Proxima! ::More about this Video:: ► Dr Jayne Birkby homepage: http://home.strw.leidenuniv.nl/~birkby/wordpress/ ► Snellen et al. Is Messaging Aliens a Bad Idea?

We listen, but we don't send. Why do we expect aliens to transmit if we don't? Many have voiced concerns about any programs designed to broadcast our presence - afterall, they may not be friendly. Although it may be a popular idea in science fiction, what do scientists say about this scenario? Today we explore the arguments for and against messaging, and what it might imply about the type of civilization that chooses to engage in messaging... Written and presented by Prof David Kipping. How Thermodynamics Holds Back Negative Carbon Tech

Go to our sponsor https://betterhelp.com/coolworlds for 10% off your first month of therapy with BetterHelp and get matched with a therapist who will listen and help. Direct Air Capture (DAC) has been getting more and more attention over the last few years. Could we avert climate change by pulling carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere? Could we not just stop, but actually *reverse* the damage done? Unfortunately, most don't fully appreciate just quite how much CO2 we've emitted and the outrageous scale of the problem facing us. Today, we apply the fundamental principles of thermodynamics to question whether this is even feasible. Written & presented by Prof. David Kipping. Edited by Jorge Casas. What's Stopping Us From Building a Warp Drive?

Get a 7-day free trial and 25% off Blinkist Annual Premium by clicking here: https://www.blinkist.com/coolworldslab A faster-than-light (FTL) warp drive would arguably represent the most important invention of all time. In 1994, Miguel Alcubierre gave all of us hope as he found a solution within general relativity that would cause the necessary warping of space. But after nearly 30 years of further study, what does our current understanding of physics say about the feasibility of a warp drive? Written & presented by Prof. David Kipping. Visit our sponsor, Private Internet Access to get digital privacy for $2.08/month: https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/CoolWorlds The search for alien intelligence is usually a framed as a search for life around other stars. But some have suggested that we should look within the Solar System instead - seeking so-called "Lurkers", alien probes sent here to monitor us.
