Episode 10: Self-Care Without The Buzzwords
Send us Fan Mail Self-care is supposed to help, so why does it sometimes feel gross, performative, or even weaponized? We get real about the way “just do some self-care” can land like a brush-off, especially when you’re burned out, overworked, or carrying other people’s stress all day. From our therapist perspective and our real-life mess, we break down what self-care actually means when it’s more than a buzzword. We talk about the line between true care and disguised coping, including the debate around habits people label as “self-care” that may actually be self-sabotage. We keep coming back to balance, intention, and outcomes: does it regulate your nervous system and support your mental health, or does it create regret tomorrow? Then we share our ideal self-care days, from putting the phone down and getting outside, to massages, walks, crafts, baking shows, reality TV, and the simple comfort of ending the night with a bath. We also dig into practical frameworks that make self-care easier to plan, like DBT basics when you’re depleted and the “wellness triangle” of emotional, social, and physical well-being. That includes journaling and art, one-on-one time with friends, movement like hot yoga, and even routines like getting your nails done that reconnect you to identity and joy. We wrap with our “good thing of the week” and a question for you to join the conversation. Subscribe so you don’t miss next week, share this with a friend who needs a reset, and leave a review if the show helps.
