The Power of Connection for Tradeswomen - Building Confidence - Episode 175
What if creating a community could change someone's entire experience of working in the trades? In this episode of Building Confidence, we're talking about the power of connection, why community is so important for tradeswomen and how you can create opportunities for women to connect in your own local area. After years of wanting to bring tradeswomen together in Greater Western Sydney, Beth and I finally decided to pick a date and make Tradeswomen Penrith Connect happen. And on 16 October, 16 amazing women came together to meet, chat, laugh, share experiences and build connections. For me, it was an incredibly emotional moment. Especially seeing first-year apprentices connecting with other tradeswomen, knowing that they now have a community around them from the very beginning of their careers. But this wasn't my first attempt at creating a networking group. Years ago, I tried bringing tradeswomen together, and sometimes only one or two people would show up. Looking back, I now realise that those conversations were still incredibly valuable. Because even connecting with one other person can make a difference. In this episode, I'm sharing not only why these connections matter, but also the practical steps Beth and I took to organise our first successful event, so you can use the same approach to build a community in your area. In this episode, we discuss: Why community and connection are so valuable for women in the trades How Tradeswomen Penrith Connect came to life What I learnt from previous attempts at organising networking events Why even one or two attendees can make an event worthwhile The importance of creating spaces where tradeswomen can meet others who understand their experiences How we used registration forms, calendar invitations and text reminders to organise the event Why following up with attendees makes such a difference Creating safe, ongoing connections through a WhatsApp community How you can recreate a similar networking group in your own area The difference between needing structured coaching support and simply needing community Why you don't have to wait for someone else to create the connection you're looking for Whether you're an apprentice who has never met another tradeswoman, a qualified tradesperson wanting to expand your network or someone who has been thinking about starting a community of your own, this episode is for you. You don't need hundreds of people to create something meaningful. Sometimes one connection is enough to make someone feel less alone. And if there isn't a community in your area, maybe you're the person who can help create one. Want to connect with other tradeswomen? Follow Tradeswomen Penrith Connect on Instagram for upcoming events and opportunities to get involved. If you're interested in starting something similar in your own area, please reach out. I'd love to support you in getting it off the ground.
