When You Love Your Trade but Not Your Job - Gabby - Building Confidence – Episode 174
What if you love your trade, but you're no longer happy doing the job you're in? In this episode of Building Confidence, I'm joined by Gabby, founder of She'll Be Right Handywoman Service, to talk about changing careers, backing yourself, recognising your skills and creating a business that works for you. After nine years working in nursing, Gabby discovered her love for hands-on work and made the leap into a cabinet-making apprenticeship. But despite loving her trade, she experienced challenging workplaces, limited opportunities to develop her skills and the frustration of feeling like her hard work wasn't always recognised. After more than eight years in cabinet making, Gabby knew something needed to change. Rather than walking away from everything she'd learnt, she started looking at how she could use her existing skills differently. That's when She'll Be Right Handywoman Service was born. Now working for herself in Melbourne, Gabby is discovering just how capable she really is, building a thriving business and providing a service that many women in her community have been looking for. We talk about the confidence it takes to try something new, the importance of being honest about what you can and can't do, and why being qualified doesn't mean you have to know everything. In this episode, we discuss: Changing careers from nursing to cabinet making Finding your place in a physically demanding, hands-on career Navigating challenging workplaces during an apprenticeship The transition from apprentice to qualified tradeswoman Recognising gaps in your skills and advocating for opportunities to learn Why honesty and transparency are so important when working with customers Feeling undervalued at work despite giving everything you've got Taking the leap into self-employment Finding a niche by using the skills you already have Building confidence through problem-solving and learning on the job Managing overwhelm, burnout and the realities of running a business Why women are seeking out female tradespeople for work in their homes Creating a career that works with your strengths, needs and lifestyle Whether you're an apprentice, a qualified tradeswoman or someone who feels stuck in a job that no longer makes you happy, Gabby's story is a reminder that your skills can take you in more directions than you might realise. You don't always have to start again. Sometimes you just need to think outside the box, back yourself and find a different way to do the work you love. You can be proud of what you already know, recognise what you still need to learn and build something incredible from there.
