Sustaining Bridges in Cancer care: Beyond the Individual — Building Community in Cancer services

In this episode of Bridgescast, host Scott Ballard-Ridley is joined by Mike Bernard, who shares his own experience of prostate cancer, and Amanda Dobbing from the Cancer Care Navigator team at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, King's Lynn. Together they explore what community really means in cancer care — from formal peer support groups to unexpected sources of connection like a chat with a neighbour or a fellow tennis club member. They discuss the two-way power of giving and receiving support, how Bridges language like "what matters most" helps clinicians open these conversations, and what's needed to keep peer support safe and effective. Sustaining Bridges in Cancer care: The Continuum of Engagement in Cancer services

In this episode of Bridgescast, host Scott Ballard-Ridley explores the Bridges continuum of engagement — from disengaged and uncertain through to motivated and proactive — with Claire Harrington, a former carer for her late husband Bradley who lived three years with a diagnosis of terminal pancreatic cancer, and Pauline Weir, a physician associate in primary care working on improving cancer journeys across her ICB. Claire reflects on how engagement can swing dramatically after a sudden diagnosis, what drove Bradley's determination to keep going, and the vital role of a carer as coordinator across a fragmented system. Pauline shares how Bridges language like "what matters to you" has changed her consultations, and how services can join up care earlier to build engagement before problems compound. The episode closes with both guests' answer to one question: what's the one thing clinicians could do tomorrow to support engagement?
