Welcome to Banned Books, where we read and converse with the rebel children, the holy mischief-makers of God, who fight against the kind of useless religious, spiritual, and moral methods of life improvement that seeks to smother the glory of God in Jesus Christ. We want to introduce you to those who forgot everything except Jesus Christ and him crucified. We all struggle with fear of being last, lost, least, littlest, and dead, and so we are here to encourage, challenge, provoke, and maybe even offend you by introducing you to theologians who at one time or another were banned by their church, declared dangerous, or simply vilified for daring to confess that Christ alone is the way, truth, and life. Welcome rebel children, holy mischief makers, and fools for Christ. This podcast is for you.

458: Prenter - Fundamental Difference Between Luther and the Enthusiasts

The Long and Winding Road. In this episode, we sit with the Holy Spirit to discuss moral law, free will, Christ crucified, and one of the longest rabbit trails we've ever been on; tracking two medieval scholastics to God's bathroom window. We ask questions of those who edit Jesus' words, question the benefits of not declaring the forgiveness of sin, and look at what happens when the Holy Spirit is sent into exile. All this and much, much more on this week's episode of the podcast. 455: Nestingen - Preaching Repentance Is a Problem

In this episode, we sit with Rev. Dr. James Nestingen's writing on the gospel and repentance. We talk at length not only about law and repentance, but also about the consequences of therapeutic culture for the preaching and reception of calls to repent in the churches. If the law is known by its uses, who is the user? What is it to have a God? What do you have if you have one? How does it work? How does the law summarize the non-negotiables of creaturely life? Can the devil use the law? What is the preacher's use of the law? How does this lead us to the topic of repentance? All this and much, much more on this week's podcast. 453: Athanasius - Against the Wiles of Satan

The Cost of Discipline. In this episode, we sit with St. Athanasius and his writings on the life of St. Antony. How did Christians in the 4th century view spiritual warfare and affliction? What is the relation of discipline to prayer, piety, and resisting temptation? What did 4th century Christians think about virtues and vices, and whether they were (or weren't) related to the Christian life? Is it better for Christians to seek a place of solitude or community when focusing on heavenly things versus worldly things? How does Mammon factor into this? What does Scripture teach about the evil one, demons, dark powers, and evil spirits? Do we as modern Christians agree with Athanasius and Antony's views about spiritual warfare, and if not, why? 452: Anonymous - Ars Moriendi

Are You More Spiritual Than a Medieval Peasant? In this episode, we sit with The Book of the Craft of Dying to discuss how medieval spiritual warfare was explained in the 1415 text Ars Moriendi. What temptations do Christians experience in the midst of death? How do temptations to desperation, impatience, complacency, and concern about worldly matters seduce Christians? How do we distinguish between divine actions and nefarious powers at work? How many times can Gillespie interrupt and contradict Riley before he goes apoplectic? Are there patterns Christians can look for to recognize when temptations are approaching? Is there anything we can do to avoid temptations? Is being tempted the same as sinning? Why is so much of medieval piety and discipline no longer taught by the churches? This and much, much more on today's episode of the podcast. 451: Listener Question on the Work of the Holy Spirit

All Apologies. In this episode, we respond to another listener question. What does it mean to "sit with a text" and yet be prepared at all times to give an apology for the hope that is in us? How does the Holy Spirit work in and through believers to testify to the truth about Jesus? Does the Spirit work through non-Christians, and if so, how and to what purpose? 450: Table Talk on Suicide

Suicide Solution. In this episode, we sit with Martin Luther and C.S. Lewis to discuss the topic of self-murder ("suicide"). We talk about focusing on higher truth, how individualism leads to harmful consequences, and how Christians and churches may discuss this with others. This episode discusses suicide directly. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, US) — and reach out to a pastor, a friend, or family, not just a stranger on the internet. SHOW NOTES: C.S. 447: Forde - The Argument about Christ and Salvation

Ride On… In this episode, we engage a listener question — is Lutheran teaching double predestination within his debate with Erasmus? How are we to understand arguments for the bound will, such as: "Man's will is like a beast standing between two riders. If God rides, it wills and goes where God wills… If Satan rides, it wills and goes where Satan wills. Nor may it choose to which rider it will run, or which it will seek; but the riders themselves fight to decide who shall have and hold it"? And so, we discuss God's will, divine necessity, predestination versus election, the preacher's vocation, the effects of free will theology on American churches, the scandal of arguing for a bound will in relation to Christ, and much, much more on this episode of the Banned Books podcast. 446: Kolb - Speaking the Gospel Today

Talk of the Town In this episode, we discuss Christian conversation — cultural, institutional, and in our encounters with the living God. Our guide is Prof. Robert Kolb, who wrote about the 'Art of Christian Conversation' in his book, "Speaking the Gospel Today." What is Christian conversation, and what is its purpose? On the other side of the table, what is a worldly conversation, and what is its ultimate purpose? Is there any difference between pre-modern and post-modern Christian conversations and secular talks? Is there anything we can learn from "Christian conversations" that can be applied and/or help us appreciate myths, legends, folk tales, and storytelling? Is it possible for our conversations to awaken us to a greater reality than what our material generation tells us about the limits of reality? 443: O'Connor - The blind, prophetical, unsentimental eye of acceptance, which is to say, of faith

Featured text: "Introduction to A Memoir of Mary Ann" — Flannery O'Connor Pretty Girls Make Graves. In this episode, we sit with Flannery O'Connor's introduction to A Memoir of Mary Ann, a memoir of a little girl who lived for 12 years at the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cancer Home in Atlanta, Georgia. Written by the nuns at the home, with a substantial introduction by Flannery O'Connor. 441: Trueman - The Value and Role of Creeds and Confessions

Featured text: "The Value and Role of Creeds and Confessions" — Carl Trueman With Arms Wide Open! In this episode, on the eve of Trinity Sunday, we sit with Carl Trueman's essay, 'The Value and Role of Creeds and Confession.' Is there any usefulness of Creeds and Confessions at present? Are they important as historic documents? Are they authoritative for the churches? What are the biblical origins of the ecumenical creeds, and are they the rule of faith for contemporary Christians? What about contemporary churches that write their own creeds, confessions, or statements of faith — do they participate in the catholic faith, or are they confessing something separate from historic, orthodox Christianity? 440: Heiser - Reading Your Bible Again... for the first time

Featured text: "The Unseen Realm: Recovering the Supernatural Worldview of the Bible" — Michael Heiser The Mosaic Word. In this episode, we sit with Michael Heiser's book, The Unseen Realm, on reading the Bible. What are the rules of engagement when one reads Scripture? What filters do we apply to the biblical texts, and are they helpful or do they blind us? What, then, are the obstacles that prevent us from enjoying the biblical narratives? What do we assume about the Bible that is true, and what is not? Have moderns been desensitized to the vitality and theological importance of the unseen world? Does modern Christianity suffer from two serious shortcomings when it comes to the supernatural world? Do we assume that a lot of things in the Bible are too odd or peripheral to matter? What if the weird parts of the Bible are the most important? SHOW NOTES: Dr. Michael S.
