Alcatraz: Mobsters, Murder & the Men Who Vanished

**Discussion begins at 3:10** Picture this: You’re standing on a tiny island in the middle of San Francisco Bay. The city skyline is just over one mile away. You can see it. At night, you can see the lights. If the wind is right, you can even hear the sounds of people living their normal, free lives across the water. But between you and them is freezing water, brutal currents, and a prison specifically designed to make sure you never leave. Welcome to Alcatraz. From 1934-1962 the former military fortress became the home of some of America’s most notorious criminals, including Al Capone, George “Machine Gun” Kelly, and Whitey Bulger to name a few. If they were too notorious, too dangerous, or too escape prone for normal prisons, they were sent to Alcatraz. And honestly, the setup was pretty solid. You had reinforced cells, armed guards, watchtowers, barbed wire, and almost two miles of San Francisco Bay between you and freedom. The government was so confident in this arrangement that Alcatraz developed a reputation as being virtually escape-proof. Officially, no prisoner ever successfully escaped Alcatraz. But on the morning of June 12, 1962, guards discovered something very inconvenient. Frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin were not in their cells. The men had spent months secretly digging holes through the walls of their cells using homemade tools, hiding the damage behind fake vents, building dummy heads out of soap, concrete dust, paint and actual human hair, constructing a raft out of stolen raincoats, and essentially running a tiny arts-and-crafts program behind the backs of the federal government. Then they climbed through the walls, got onto the roof, made their way to the shoreline, launched their homemade raft into San Francisco Bay…. and vanished. The FBI eventually concluded that the men most likely drowned, despite the bodies never being found. And this is where we put on our little tin foil hats. Because over the decades, there have been alleged sightings, family stories, mysterious photographs, flowers reportedly sent to the Anglin brothers’ mother, and even a letter allegedly written by one of the escapees claiming that all three men survived. So either three convicted criminals drowned in one of the coldest, roughest stretches of water in California... or the federal government spent years insisting that nobody could escape Alcatraz after three men successfully escaped Alcatraz. And that is not even the only weird thing about this island. Alcatraz has military history, infamous mobsters, bizarre escape attempts, a violent prison uprising literally called the Battle of Alcatraz in which the Marines had to save the day, an Indigenous occupation, and enough alleged paranormal activity that apparently even after the prison closed, some residents still refused to check out. Get your drinks ready Foil Heads, because today we are going to The Rock. Send us Fan Mail Support the show Theme song by INDA

Rewatch Required: Theories That Completely Change the Movie

**Discussion begins at 9:25** You know that feeling when you rewatch a movie you loved as a kid and suddenly realize… wait a minute. This is actually kind of messed up. What if some of the movies we know and love aren’t actually about what we think they’re about? What if Sandy didn’t survive the beginning of Grease, and the entire movie is actually her dying fantasy? What if Ferris Bueller doesn’t actually exist, and he’s just the fearless, charismatic alter ego Cameron created to cope with his miserable life? And perhaps most devastating of all for Kait and Colleen: What if Harry Potter never received a letter from Hogwarts? What if an abused, isolated 11 year old boy locked underneath a staircase created an entire fantasy world where he discovered that he wasn’t unwanted or ordinary at all? He was special. His parents didn’t abandon him, they died protecting him. And one day, a giant literally smashed through the door and rescued him from the people who had made his life miserable. Meanwhile, back in reality, Harry is still in the cupboard under the stairs. Today we’re diving into some of the wildest movie reinterpretations and fan theories on the internet. Some are surprisingly convincing. Some solve plot holes that have bothered people for decades. And some require the kind of mental gymnastics that we deeply respect here at 3SQHQ. So grab your popcorn, suspend your disbelief, and prepare to never watch your favorite movies the same way again. Send us Fan Mail Support the show Theme song by INDA

Rapid Fire 2.0: The Internet's Wildest Conspiracy Theories

**Discussion begins at 7:25** This week, we’re throwing research out the window and letting TikTok and Instagram take the wheel. In this chaotic rapid-fire episode, we dive into some of the wildest conspiracy theories currently making the rounds on social media, and judge them based on absolutely nothing but the evidence presented in the videos. Is Stevie Wonder really blind? Did Sony kill Michael Jackson? Is botox contributing to the future Zombie apocalypse? Are giants and Himalayan sea salt somehow part of a much bigger story? We watch, we debate, we ask way too many questions, and then we vote... Could it be true, or is the internet officially unwell? No fact-checking. No deep dives. Just the 3SchemeQueens, questionable evidence, and pure conspiracy chaos. Send us Fan Mail Support the show Theme song by INDA

    Lindsay Clancy: Murder or Madness?

**Discussion begins at 4:45** There are some cases where the facts are so horrifying that we instinctively want the answer to be simple. Someone did something terrible, they knew what they were doing, and they should be held responsible. But what happens when the person accused of doing something unimaginable may also have been profoundly, catastrophically mentally ill? That is the question at the center of the Lindsay Clancy trial. In January of 2023, three siblings, five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson, and eight-month-old Callan were killed inside their home in Duxbury, Massachusetts. Their mother, Lindsay Clancy, survived an apparent suicide attempt and was ultimately charged with three counts of first-degree murder. Now, more than three years later, a jury is being asked to decide if Lindsay did it, and what was going in her mind at the time. Today we’re going to breakdown the possibilities. The first is the prosecution's version: Lindsay did it, she knew exactly what she was doing, and she is criminally responsible. The evidence, they argue, points to planning, decision-making, and deliberate actions before and after the children's deaths. The second is the defense's argument: Lindsay did it but she was experiencing a devastating psychiatric illness, including postpartum psychosis, and was not criminally responsible for her actions. Her attorneys have pointed to her deteriorating mental health, her psychiatric treatment, medications, and what they say was a failure to recognize just how seriously ill she had become. And then there is the third possibility being argued by armchair detectives following the case… What if Lindsay didn't do it at all? This week, we’ll look at the evidence that supports each possibility, the evidence that challenges each one, and what the law actually requires, because this isn't just a story about a mother accused of killing her children. It's a case about mental illness, postpartum psychosis, criminal responsibility, the limits of psychiatric medicine, and the justice system. So buckle up foil heads, because this one is complicated. Minisode: The Girl Scout Cookie Conspiracy

In this minisode, we investigate the conspiracy theory that the cookies sold at Dollar Tree are essentially Girl Scout cookies, just sold under a different brand and at a fraction of the price. We’re digging into the companies behind Girl Scout cookies, the surprisingly similar cookies that show up on dollar-store shelves, and why some people swear that their favorite Girl Scout flavors have a suspiciously affordable doppelgänger. Is this a legitimate cookie-industry connection, a brilliant Girl Scout marketing strategy, or simply a case of two cookies being really freaking similar? We follow the crumbs, compare the evidence, and decide whether this conspiracy deserves a Thin Mint-sized dose of skepticism, or a trip to Dollar Tree. Because if you can get your peanut butter cookie fix for $1.25 instead of $6… we have questions. Send us Fan Mail Support the show Theme song by INDA

Blue Whales Explained: The Largest Animals Ever to Live

**Discussion begins at 4:00** **Reproduction discussion 25:30 - 31:30** The blue whales are the largest animals to have ever lived on Earth. They are larger than any dinosaur, with hearts the size of small cars and voices so powerful they can travel across entire ocean basins. Despite this, blue whales remain surprisingly mysterious. This week we’re diving into the hidden world of these ocean giants. How can an animal that grows longer than a basketball court is wide still manage to disappear into the vastness of the ocean? How did they evolve to a point that nearly violates the laws of physic? Why do some of their calls remain unexplained? Could strange underwater sounds, including one of the most famous noises ever recorded in the deep sea, have been connected to these massive creatures? From their incredible migrations and secret feeding grounds to the unanswered questions scientists are still trying to solve, we're exploring the mysteries that surround the blue whale. The Mary Celeste: Sea-riously What Happened?

**Discussion begins at 4:50** Picture a ship drifting silently across the Atlantic Ocean. Its sails are raised. It's cargo is untouched. There are no signs of violence, no evidence of a struggle, and yet every single person on board has vanished without a trace. In December of 1872, the merchant brigantine Mary Celeste was discovered adrift between the Azores and Portugal. The ship itself appeared remarkably seaworthy. Food and water were still stocked. Personal belongings remained behind. Even the crew's valuables were untouched. But Captain Benjamin Briggs, his wife, his young daughter, and the rest of the crew were nowhere to be found. For more than 150 years, the mystery of the Mary Celeste has captivated sailors, historians, and conspiracy theorists alike. Was it piracy? Mutiny? A sea monster? Alien abduction? Or was the truth something even more unsettling? Send us Fan Mail Support the show Theme song by INDA

The Flannan Isles Lighthouse Mystery: The Keepers Who Vanished

**Discussion begins at 5:05** On a remote cluster of windswept islands off the coast of Scotland, three lighthouse keepers vanished without a trace. No bodies. No signs of a struggle. Just an abandoned lighthouse, a stopped clock, and a mystery that has haunted the sea for more than a century. This week, we’re heading to the Flannan Isles Lighthouse, where in December of 1900, keepers James Ducat, Thomas Marshall, and Donald MacArthur disappeared from the isolated island of Eilean Mòr. When the relief ship finally arrived after days of storms, something felt wrong immediately. The lighthouse was dark. The dock was empty. One set of oilskins remained hanging inside, suggesting one man had gone out into the storm without proper gear. The logbook entries described violent winds and terrified behavior… even though weather reports later suggested the seas had been calm. So what really happened on the Flannan Isles? Was it a rogue wave powerful enough to sweep all three men into the Atlantic? A tragic accident compounded by brutal weather? Or did something stranger happen on that isolated rock in the North Atlantic? Over the years, theories have ranged from sea monsters and ghost ships to paranormal forces, secret espionage, and even the island’s supposed curse. This week, we’re diving into one of the most chilling unsolved disappearances in maritime history, the Flannan Isles Lighthouse Mystery. Send us Fan Mail Support the show Theme song by INDA

Operation Sideswipe: The Louisiana Fraud Conspiracy

This conspiracy is called Operation Sideswipe, so get ready to get wrecked. In New Orleans, on Interstate 10, there was a string of crashes over a period of ten years that looked random at first glance until insurance investigators noticed a pattern. What started as a routine insurance claim exploded into one of the most shocking fraud conspiracies in Louisiana history. Staged car wrecks, fake victims, corrupt lawsuits, and millions of dollars allegedly drained from trucking companies and their insurers. Federal investigators say participants intentionally caused crashes with eighteen wheeler trucks, then filed fraudulent injury claims designed to look legitimate. But the deeper investigators dug, the darker the story became. According to the prosecutors, the operation involved slammers who would drive the cars, their recruited passengers, a spotter vehicle with witnesses, and their attorneys working together to orchestrate collisions along the interstate. More than fifty people have been convicted or charged in the connection of this scheme. As the investigations deepened, there was another twist. No one expected allegations of witness intimidation, but a key cooperating witness in the investigation, Cornelius Garrison, was gunned down in 2020, a killing prosecutors linked directly to the growing federal case. This is the story of Operation Sideswipe. Send us Fan Mail Support the show Theme song by INDA

Encephalitis Lethargica: The Mysterious Pandemic That's Been Forgotten

Between 1918 and 1920, the Spanish Flu killed 50 million people worldwide. This pandemic, arrived on the heels of WW1, and between the two events, nearly 5% of the world’s population was killed. But there was another pandemic occurring, one that is less well known and less frequently talked about, that remains a mystery to this day. In the winter of 1916 in Europe, people were seeking medical attention for general malaise. At first, it looked like a mild case of the flu with fever, headaches, and fatigue. Many would recover, but some would begin exhibiting tremors and many slowed down mentally and physically, until they were completely immobile despite being conscious and alive. The symptoms presented on a spectrum, but patients sometimes experienced lethargy or even obtundation, paralysis of eye muscles, rigid muscles, frozen posture, loss of speech, and sudden immobility. In some cases, the progression was overnight. In others, it took weeks to months. Doctors called it Encephalitis Lethargica, but no one really understood it. Some patients slept for days. Others stayed awake, trapped inside bodies that no longer moved. Hundreds of thousands of people lost the ability to walk and talk, and then in 1928 new cases just stopped appearing. By then, however, there had been more than 1 million cases, and half of those had ended in death. Those that did survive, often developed a post-encephalitic Parkinsonism leaving them rigid, slow, and unable to move normally for the rest of their lives. And then, just as mysteriously as it appeared… it vanished. So what was this disease? A viral epidemic? A post-war complication? Something we still don’t fully understand? This week, we’re diving into one of the most unsettling medical mysteries in modern history, Encephalitis Lethargica, also known as the Sleeping Sickness. The Circleville Letters: Someone is Always Watching

**Discussion begins at 3:50** In the late 1970s, the peaceful, small town community of Circleville, OH, was shaken when individuals began receiving strange letters. They all came in the mail with absent or fake return addresses, and were postmarked from Columbus, OH, 25 miles north of Circleville. The letters were handwritten in strange block letters and contained details about the recipients. Over 1000 letters were sent, accusing neighbors of affairs, exposing private lives, and threatening violence if confessions weren’t made. And whoever was behind them seemed to know everything including intimate details no outsider should have known. Then, things escalated. One victim died under suspicious circumstances while confronting the writer. Another was set up with a booby trap that was supposed to kill her on contact. What started as anonymous harassment was now something far darker and far more deadly. But here’s where the mystery deepens. A suspect was caught. A trial was held. A man was sent to prison. Case closed… right? Not even close. Because even after the conviction, the letters didn’t stop. So who was really behind the Circleville letters? Today we’re talking about a wild story involving secrets, paranoia, and the terrifying idea that someone out there might know you better than you know yourself. The Vanishing Minds: The Mysterious Deaths and Disappearances of US Scientists

**Discussion begins at 5:35** What if the brightest minds in science were being erased? Over the past few years, a quiet pattern has begun to emerge. Names that once lived in research papers, conference panels, and classified briefings are now showing up somewhere else entirely: missing persons reports, obituaries, and unanswered questions. Today we’re talking about nine scientists: William McCasland. Monica Reza. Carl Grillmair. Melissa Casias. Anthony Chavez. Frank Maiwald. Micheal David Hicks. Nuno Loureiro. Jason Thomas. Different fields. Different backgrounds. And yet their stories seem to echo each other. Some were working on advanced energy systems. Others on space observation, defense technologies, or experimental physics. All of them were operating at the edge of what we understand. Then, suddenly, they were gone. So today we’re discussing these cases and trying to decide if this is just a tragic series of coincidences or if there is something linking these cases together. Note: After recording another scientist was added to the list of mysterious deaths and disappearances. Steven Garcia, 48, was a property custodian for the Kansas City National Security Campus, the facility that manufactures more than 80% of all the non-nuclear components used to build the military’s nuclear weapons. On August 28, 2025 he left his home on foot with a hand gun and no other personal belongings. He has not been seen since. Send us Fan Mail Support the show Theme song by INDA

Alpine Divorce: When a Hike Becomes a Homicide

**Discussion begins at 5:25** Alpine Divorce: Ending a relationship by murdering one’s significant other during a mountain trip and passing it off as an accident, or more specifically, abandoning a partner in a remote outdoor setting. The phrase originates from an 1893 short story by Scottish-Canadian author Robert Barr, titled An Alpine Divorce. In the grim tale, an unhappy husband plots to kill his wife during a trip to the Swiss Alps, only for her to turn the tables on him, having already framed him for her murder before leaping herself. Several high profile cases over the last few years have led to a viral trend of social media users telling their own stories of “Alpine Divorce”. These tales of domestic abuse involve one partner endangering the other in the wilderness – with the victim either being left in a perilous situation, or merely abandoned without consideration for their safety and well-being. Today we’re going to discuss some of the most high profile cases. Send us Fan Mail Support the show Theme song by INDA

The Pollock Twins: Back from the Dead

**Discussion begins at 4:30** In the late 1950s, a quiet family in the English town of Hexham experienced a tragedy that would forever change their lives, and eventually become one of the most famous alleged cases of reincarnation in modern history. In 1957, two young sisters, Joanna and Jacqueline Pollock, were killed in a car accident while walking to church with a friend. Their parents, devastated by the loss, tried to rebuild their lives while carrying unimaginable grief. But about a year later, something extraordinary happened. Their mother gave birth to twin girls: Jennifer and Gillian. Almost immediately, their father became convinced that the twins were somehow the rebirth of the daughters he had lost. As the girls grew older, they began displaying strange similarities to their deceased sisters, including shared personality traits, specific fears, and even what appeared to be memories of places and events they had never experienced. One twin was even born with birthmarks that closely resembled scars that Jacqueline had before her death. The story would go on to attract the attention of researchers studying reincarnation, including psychiatrist Ian Stevenson, who documented cases of children claiming memories of past lives around the world. But the Pollock Sisters case raises a difficult question: were these eerie similarities evidence of something beyond our understanding… or could they be explained by grief, suggestion, and coincidence?
