Why we usually favor local record stores over thrift stores, and how getting familiar with a shop’s layout, staff picks, local section, and used new-arrivals bin can help you discover music faster. We also make the case that record stores are more than retail spaces: they’re third places, social hubs, and sometimes even venues where you can meet bandmates, make friends, and score the occasional free box or promo poster. We also get into buying used vinyl with confidence: when new pressings and represses make sense, why VG+ and VG are often the sweet spots, what the records should sound and look like, and how to think about bootlegs, shipping, returns, and seller reputation when you shop online. The big message here is to start small, buy local, buy used when you can, trust your own eyes and ears, and set your own rules for what counts as too much money, too many records, or too much risk.
