Do the Past and Future Exist?

Is the past erased and the future a void yet to be filled? Well, the answer lies in between the past and the future - in the elusive, ever-moving eye-blink that we call the present. • Sleepy Facts About the Universe

Is Time a Universal Clock or a Personal Path? - Why Moving Clocks Disagree | Sleepy Facts About the Universe

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! Two friends stand on a train platform, synchronize their watches, and part ways. When they reunite, their watches display different elapsed times. Neither clock is broken, and neither traveler experienced anything strange. This deceptively simple scenario opens the door to one of the most profound shifts in modern physics: the realization that time is not a universal background clock, but a geometric property of a path through spacetime. This episode examines what a clock actually measures when it moves through the world. We explore how Einstein dismantled the Newtonian idea of absolute time, and how Hermann Minkowski’s four-dimensional spacetime provides the framework to understand why different travelers experience different durations. By distinguishing proper time—the physical duration a traveler actually lives and records—from coordinate time, we see why the so-called twin paradox is not a paradox at all, but a simple geometric fact. Real-world examples, from cosmic ray muons surviving atmospheric decay to the daily relativistic corrections required for GPS satellites, ground these abstract concepts in measurable reality. I wanted to understand why we cannot simply say that a moving clock runs slow. The answer requires letting go of the intuition that time flows uniformly for everyone everywhere. I found that looking at time as a distance traveled through a unified spacetime framework offers a far more accurate picture of reality. It is a quiet shift in perspective, but it changes how we understand the very duration of our lives.

Previous Episode: Did Life on Earth Come from Space? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REl20rlZGTw Hosted by Matt O'Dowd Written by Graeme Gossel and Matt O'Dowd Graphics by Luke Maroldi Assistant Editing and Sound Design by Mike Petrow Made by Kornhaber Brown (www.kornhaberbrown.com) When we think about symmetry, the first thing that comes to mind is mirror symmetry. Butterflies, Rorschach tests, and classically attractive faces all look the same when flipped left-to-right. In physics, a symmetry is when the laws of physics are unchanged due to some transformation of coordinates. We’ve seen examples where it is - the universe is symmetric to coordinate shifts in space, time, and even the rather abstract phase of the wave function. So it might be surprising to learn that with all the weird ways in which the universe IS symmetric, it’s NOT entirely symmetric under this most intuitive one. The laws of physics work differently in the universe of the mirror.

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode!
