    What Caused the Big Bang?

In a tiny fraction of a second, inflationary expansion multiplied the size of the universe by a larger factor than in the following 13 and a half billion years of regular expansion. This story seems like a bit of a … stretch. Is there really any mechanism that could cause something like this to happen? What what we’re covering today – the real physics of cosmic inflation. Hosted by Matt O'Dowd Written by Matt O'Dowd Graphics by Leonardo Scholzer Directed by Andrew Kornhaber Produced By: Kornhaber Brown Dark Energy Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLsPUh22kYmNA6WUmOsEEi32zi_RdSUF4i The Quantum Vacuum and Hawking Radiation Playlist https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvgZqGxF3eo&list=PLsPUh22kYmNAHB1W2_Ka2F83sObdczwKr Most cosmologists buy some variation of the inflation hypothesis. It seems to very neatly solve some of the biggest questions in cosmology. Those being: why is matter and energy so smoothly spread out across the entire observable universe? And why is the geometry of the universe so flat? Neither should be expected unless the universe expanded much more rapidly early on. We explored these problems in an earlier video – worth a look if you really want to get inflation. Another problem fixed by inflation is the absence of magnetic monopoles – strange particles predicted to have been produced in the early universe. We’ll come back to those another time. Why Is The World Returning To The Moon So Quickly?

Check out the Space Time Merch Store https://www.pbsspacetime.com/shop The Moon has been one of the most important theoretical stepping stones to our understanding of the universe. We’ve long understood that it could also be our literal stepping stone: humanity’s first destination beyond our atmosphere. PBS Member Stations rely on viewers like you. • Sleepy Facts About the Universe

Why Was the Universe Once Thought to Be Younger Than Earth? - The Hubble Tension and the Precision Era of Cosmology | Sleepy Facts About the Universe

For a time in the early twentieth century, astronomers calculated that the universe was about two billion years old. This was a deeply uncomfortable result, given that geologists had already determined the Earth beneath our feet was four and a half billion years old. The cosmos, it seemed, was younger than its own contents. Fixing this profound paradox took half a century and required the development of three entirely independent methods of measurement, each relying on completely different physics. This episode traces how our understanding of cosmic time evolved from those early, flawed estimates to the modern value of 13.8 billion years. We look at how hidden differences in stellar populations threw off early distance scales, how the cosmic microwave background provided a standard ruler imprinted on the sky, and how the discovery of dark energy and accelerating expansion changed the calculation entirely. We also examine why the current precision of these measurements has revealed a new puzzle known as the Hubble tension. I wanted to understand how a number as vast as the age of the universe becomes a trusted fact rather than a guess. What stands out to me is that our confidence does not come from a single perfect observation, but from entirely separate lines of evidence slowly learning to agree. It is a calm, gradual process of correction, and exploring how those independent cosmic clocks learned to tick together gives us a clearer picture of how science actually works.

How Can Matter Be BOTH Liquid AND Gaseous State?

When we think of an exotic state of matter we tend to think of the really weird things that matter can do in extreme circumstances - like how at very high temperatures we get the plasma that the sun is made of, or at extreme densities we get the nuclear matter of neutron stars. But there’s one state of matter - supercritical fluid - that’s not solid, liquid or gas, but is also not confined to extreme or rare environments. In fact, there are planets in our solar system completely covered with oceans of the stuff, and you’ve often been the beneficiary of its powers without even knowing it. Special Thanks to Nigel Braun.
