Yiddish in Monsey
In this episode of “Yiddish mit Borekh”, I open with a greeting and talk about everyday Yiddish use in Monsey. I explore how Yiddish is still actively spoken in local shops and community spaces—not only among traditionally religious (Hasidic) Jews, but also in ordinary day-to-day interactions. In stores, sellers often speakl Yiddish when speaking with customers, or will switch at your request, especially when discussing books, religious texts (sforim), and everyday products. I also share personal experiences speaking with shopkeepers and other customers, highlighting how friendly and open these conversations tend to be. I address common misconceptions and fears about interacting with Hasidic communities, and explain that in my experience, people are generally welcoming and willing to engage in simple conversation in shops or on the street. The episode closes with a look ahead to future episodes, including more Yiddish content and discussions of news in Yiddish.
