Wine, Weed, Weird!

Emily and Ky

Join Emily (and her vape), and Kyla (and her wine glass) for a minimally edited exploration of songs, movies, and shows that leave us with a lot more questions than answers. It’s basically a night with your besties without you needing to put on pants, or participate in the conversation! Have I mentioned we’re really funny?

It Says Normal! (it's about Jeckyll and Hyde [1920])

Join Emily and Ky as they express bafflement and try to understand what happened with their viewing of Jeckyll and Hyde. We know now, of course, that it was the Pretend Spirit. They also consider how Jeckyll and Hyde compares to other stories about the darker side of human nature, such as The Portrait of Dorian Gray, and The Purge, with special consultant, Teddy! Is it about drugs? Is it about purity culture? Is it ok to have sex in this moral universe, or not? We may never know. Donate $10 if you want us to re-do the watch along!

Your Stupid Idealism (it's about Jeckyll and Hyde starring John Barrymore [1920])

It's the Moooooooost spooOOOOOky of the year! When Emily and Ky watch a silent horror movie, and gab the whole time for your enjoyment! This year we had an accidental, super special unwanted guest: The Pretend Spirit! But that's ok! There's options! Join Emily and Ky for youthful idealism, and the consequences of just not like, fucking. There's probably a moral here, but we don't really get there until next week.

We Have the Audacity (it's about Clue [1985])

God bless Granddaddy Wiz, and never forget that anything can happen on Halloween. We are gathered here today to celebrate the gift of the life of Tim Curry. By covering a movie he was in. A delightful dark house murder mystery comedy called, Clue! Not the clue. If any listener would like to report whether Emily picked up putting "the" in front of things that don't have "the" in front of them from Ky, or if Ky picked it up from Emily, that would be great. In the meantime, enjoy funny murders, strange choices in murder weapons, and the example of the word "No" in the English language.

Get OSHA in Here (it's about Bunnicula [1983])

Happy Spooky Season to all who celebrate! If you remember Bunnicula as a charming tale about accepting those who are different than you instead of assuming differences are dangerous (obvs queer-coded), then I am so sorry, this tv adaption is...less about that. But at least it is about how material hardships will push people to a tribalist, anti-outsider state, so it's pro-leftist politics after all! Join Emily and special guest co-host Teddy for this hot take, and more! Does Bunnicula sound more like Clavicular than Dracula? (Yes) And what's with that guy, anyway? (Homosocial patriarchal shit) Are wolves breaking into the plant to commit OSHA violations? (I shit you not, this is a plot point.) Emily shares her bridge too far, and Teddy offers shared cultural experiences with Marcelo Hernandez, then they both agree that letting veggies sit and rot all week is a criminal offense. Lets just focus on the fact that it's ok that the little rabbit eats veggies a little differently than most, because he's not hurting anybody! It's totally queer-coded.

Drugs Bring People Together (it's about 9-5)

How do you handle issues of consent and bodily autonomy when trying to help severely mentally ill people? Do you do m&m's? Does everyone know about Dolly Parton's acrylics? 9-5 keeps bringing up the important issues this week as Emily and Ky consider a film makes them look cool, calm, and collected.

This is how you Organize (It’s about 9 to 5)

Happy 9/25, officially Dolly Parton Day in NYC! Of course, Emily and Ky are celebrating this week (and next week) with an exploration of the equal parts campy and woke classic, 9 to 5! Do they remember the names of the characters? Do they get very far into the plot? Have you listened to this show before? The important thing is, you can always bring an uber coffee to this interview!

God Forbid We Learn how to Squeak (it's about John C Lilly)

We're back with another Wine, Weed, Weird Historical Figure! John C Lilly was a big old nerd, whose scientific inquiry led to inventions we still use today, and some fascinating questions. He also fell into a K hole in his later life, and predicted the downfall of humanity due to AI. And you can't forget about the dolphins, bro! Dive in along with Ky as Emily explains, with medium attention to the timeline or research, the fascinating science of John C Lilly. Along the way, they explore the ethics of animal sex! Get ready for exploiting whales!

The Secret Third Thing (it's about If You Love Me, Show Me)

Is sex like the limbo? Is it worse than falling off a cliff? Is it a good thing to sing with your dad about? Is abortion like suicide? Can't you just like, pull someone out of a car without magical powers? Can't women just want to have sex?? Yes, yes, yes, yes, no, and no, according to this incredibly unhinged abstinence-only PSA. Join Emily and Ky for a time traveling adventure featuring an unforgettable dance number, numerous creepy men, a cheap bottle of champagne, and a message that makes even less sense once you take Jesus out of it. We're all just out of our wrappers and rolling in the dirt!

Short Girls Only (it's about Cobweb Hotel)

Emily and Ky have many concerns about this hotel. They wouldn't stay in a hotel specifically for only short girls, for example. They would also ask for another room immediatly if placed in one that featured a glory hole...and once they looked through the hole (shut up, you would, too!) and discovered they were non-consensually involved in aother guest's kink, they for sure would have been out of there. But maybe if you're a champion boxing fly you don't worry about those sorts of things? Anyway, of course it was the wife who saved the day. Stay tuned for chipmunk voices, and discussions of systemic racism!

Don't Eat a Battery (it's about I'm No Fool Around Elecricity)

Jimminy Cricket is back along with his new alter ego, Jiminy Cracket, to tell us not to leave anything plugged in your room for two minutes or your house will burn down, but nothing whatsoever about eating batteries in a PSA that contains sound advice for historical buffoon Benjamin Franklin, and maybe undersells the danger of mixing water and electricity just a bit. Emily and Ky have a lot of electricity stories to share from childhood fears, to really old fuse boxes, to a the chaos that a lack of electricity causes, and of course, robot massages! Listen, I cut out a full 20 minutes of additional unrelated stories. You'll get em eventually, don't stress. But do lick a nine volt battery and tell us about it!

30 Seconds of Accountability (it's about 7 Brides for 7 Brothers)

Did we cover this movie already? Ky did a deepdive into the archive and can't find it, but we both have a vague memory that we did? Anyway, here it is! Goofy songs, terrible advice, high knee'd dance numbers, human trafficking, and sex jokes! Due to technical difficulties, the sound is lower than usual for the first half, and there's a few weird moments the editing software tried to fix without my consent, but it's a hoot none the less! Bless your beautiful hide!

This Woman is Spaghetti (it's about "Pancake" by JADED)

Emily and Ky lead rich, full lives! They travel! Their friends get married! Emily's the chief steward of her union! Ky is supposed to be doing admin! Anyway, this week's episode is a re-release. It's our third episode ever, and I think it's a real treat. Pull up the song so you can listen along! Is this song about sex? Is it rich with metaphors? Is Liz short for lizard? Does eating something you're allergic to make you gooey in the middle? We may never know.

Isn't that just Life? (it's about DARE's Journey Through the Land of Decisions and Choices)

Emily and Ky are at the beach with pelvic floor issues! Before they have to pee again, they discuss daring to get ready for bed, the frozen yogurt craze, why there are so many boobs in this PSA, why DARE always seems to be trying to increase children's exposure to drugs, and of course, what THEIR drug PSA would say! It's a another giggly beach episode as they journey through their own land of decisions and choices. Will they pay $15 for a pina colada? Will they try cocaine again? Will they ever know how one actually sniffs glue? The only way for you to find out is to make your own decision and choice to listen!

This is a Silly Critique to Make (it's about Sausage Party (2014)

The beach is for bitches, and thank God, no one asked Emily and Ky to watch their stuff this year, or explained to them what breakfast was! This year they're explaining one of Emily's mom's favorite movies! The woman contains legions. And Emily and Ky contain oppinions! Lots of them! Is this a deeply layered satirical commentary on modern american life? Is it an endless string of racially insensitive stereotypes and raunchy puns? Could it be both? There's only one way to find out, and we do not recomend you pay $3.99 for the privilege.

A Solid Shoulder Shimmy (it's a Re-Release about "Escape - The Pina Colada Song")

Does anything hit quite like a piña colada on a hot day? No, absolutely not. Who doesn’t like a piña colada?? Certainly none of our listeners, which is part of what is so half-brained at best about this personal add relationship train wreck set to a boppy beat we’re re-releasing our episode on from season one. Order yourself one, and thank your lucky stars you’re not in a relationship with either one of these two!

The Flaw, Unfortunately, is Fundamental (it's about Fresh Vegetable Mystery)

I don't know about you, listeners, but what stands out to me in this episode is not the shock of torturing old man corn (see what I did there?), not the insightful political commentary on the violence of the carceral state, not Emily's medium quality explanation of the concept of tyranny of the majority, but the fact that they mentioned the 2016 black comedy Sausage Party so many times without getting the title of the movie right even once. Emily and Ky are for the streets, so that's where they're recording (recorning?). Get tucked in like cute little peas in a pod, envision the streets of Tribeca, and tune in!

The Beaver is not Alienated from his Labor (it's about Welcome to Beaver Valley

First, special guest Teddy is here to share a weird snack and they claim Emily ate most of, however there is photo evidence disproving this slander. Then, Emily and Ky would like to welcome you to Beaver Valley! No, it's not their onlyfans channel, but it is still a special place full of beautiful beavers! Get ready for so many animals facts, most importantly that every animal is just the cutest little guy. We've also got church camp stories, cat updates, and a treatise on a common reproductive strategy in the animal kingdom: the nut 'n' die! It's a season 6 can't miss!

My Clothes are on the Street! (it's about "I'm no Fool as a Pedestrian")

Sometimes, there's a subtle arc to 3-episode recording sessions: a warm-up, a high energy, and a gentle slope down at the end. But this ep's subject has got Emily fired up with all the hot takes: ACAB except for the assholes driving really loud cars/motorcycles down the Prospect Expressway! There should be NO free street parking! If you have a big truck, and don't have a frequent essential use for it, you are a loser, and should feel bad! Ky is softly moderating some of these takes with her classic care and consideration, but agrees strongly on the car-size arms race being both annoying, as well as dangerous. Shout-out to the War on Cars podcast for radicalizing Emily, and the assholes driving down Prospect Park Expressway in really loud cars/motorcycles at just the right time for providing realistic sound effects. You know Emily hates to hand it to them. Keep a look out for a future performance art project: storing my private property on the street for free, since that's apparently a thing we can do. Seriously, fuck cars.

I Can Run Faster than You (it's about Sing Along with Bret)

We've got an exciting sequel for you in season six! It's the Kazoo Kid! Except instead of a playing a kazoo, he's shaking kids' hands like he's running for president! It's weird. Emily is really reading into his feelings about this. Ky has her own theories. Aside from making fun of small children, they mostly discuss the state of healthcare in America. In case you wondered, Emily's eye doctor pronounced her retinas healthy, and beautiful.

Our Child is in First Grade (it's the Season 6 Opener!)

Emily and Ky have had their Spring Break, and they are, as the autogenerated chapter titles once said, High, Unaccountable, and Ready to Chat! They're diving right in with musings on the nature of achievement and validation, a long tangent on an embryo-centered court case, and of course, the classic song that started it all: "All I Want to do is Make Love to You" by Heart! This season they've done (most of) their homework, and are each coming to you with a handful of songs to propose as prequels or sequels to the events in the story. New to the pod? You can get a perfect refresher by going back to episode one of season 5! If you want every crumb of context, listening to all five of our previous season openers before this would be a hell of a way to experience the magic of Wine, Weed, Weird! Happy Summer, yall! Welcome to the new season!
