Gary Husband - "If You Were Mine" - Level 42
Gary Husband joins Stevie Taylor and Jonnie Adams on this latest episode of Who’s on Drums to discuss Level 42’s “If You Were Mine” from the 1991 album Guaranteed, which he wrote and recorded at Mark King’s Summerhouse Studios on the Isle of Wight, featuring Mark King, Mike Lindup, Wally Badarou, Dominic Miller, and Alan Holdsworth. Gary recalls festival encounters with Chick Corea, the importance of strong time, and how bands gravitate toward players with the strongest pulse. Gravitas! He describes Mark King’s clear expectations for drummers, his fast, decisive production style, and the largely first-take approach on Guaranteed, plus dissatisfaction with the album’s later compressed mix compared to a tighter DAT reference mix. Gary also explains lyrical and structural inspirations for “If You Were Mine,” including Madonna’s “Open Your Heart,” its early chorus modulation, difficult 16th-note anticipations, and the “balls to the wall” drum build into Holdsworth’s solo, while reflecting on imperfections as musical character.
