What's Been On Your Mind?

What’s Been On Your Mind?

Every person has a story. Every story has something to teach us. Some stories extraordinary. Some are surprisingly ordinary. And some will make you look at the world or your own life, a little differently.

What’s Been On Your Mind? is a place for real conversations with interesting people from all walks of life. There’s no single topic, no political agenda, and no formula for who we’ll meet next. One week, we might sit down with a third-generation farmer who has worked the same land for decades. The next, it could be a child psychologist, a missionary, a marriage expert, a radio personality, or someone who has overcome addiction and has a story few people have heard.

The common thread is simple: their story matters, and there’s something worth discovering.

We talk about life, work, family, faith, relationships, struggles, successes, lessons learned, and the experiences that shape who we become. Sometimes the conversation is funny. Sometimes it's surprising. Sometimes it's difficult. But it’s always about hearing another person's perspective and finding something meaningful in the conversation.

These aren't sound bites. They’re real conversations that take the time to go somewhere — usually 60 to 90 minutes, with a new guest and a new perspective about once a week.

So pull up a chair, settle in, stay curious and join the conversation.

What’s Been On Your Mind?

Because you never know what you’ll discover when you take the time to listen to someone else’s story.

Walking Away from your Dream Job - For a Purpose!

He produced Huge Live Events that took over the entire Dallas Cowboys Stadium and the Las Vegas Sphere... And walked away from it all. Dave grew up a pastor's kid with spiritual doubts and a bit of a wild side to becoming an artist and starting his own company. Then became a multi location retail entrepreneur and ultimately a live-event producer! Dave Gillaspie had everything he thought he wanted. www.IgniteBibleMinistries.com Dave@Impact.ws Dave takes a breath today and shares the messy, surprising journey he experienced, which eventually leads him to use his gifts to support and expand his wife Pam’s growing ministry into a more full publishing and teaching operation! Dave Gillaspie’s life looks like a string of reinventions, but the real story is what happens when God keeps closing doors yet faithfully opened better ones. Along the way, he reveals the moment he knew it was time to leave a job he loved, why he never looked back, and how a “simple” ministry turned into 23 titles, online Bible studies, a monthly newsletter, and a fast-growing audience that now includes hundreds joining 60-day classes. If you’ve ever felt stuck between stability and calling, this conversation will hit home. You'll discover: How Dave knew it was time to walk away from identity, office politics, and a steady paycheck Why he sees his current role not as Pam’s ministry, but “our ministry” How their publishing company, in 2002, got built from the ground up, including design, layout, distribution, and digital classes The story behind Ignite Bible Ministries, its roots in Pam’s books, and the shift from print-only to online expansion What it looks like to keep saying yes when life lands you in the middle of work, family, grand kids, and care giving Dave opens up about the tension of being a pastor’s kid who didn’t fully own his faith until adulthood, the burden of carrying too much instead of handing it to God, and the freedom that comes from finally working on something with eternal value. His wife, Pam Gillaspie is the author and speaker behind Ignite Bible Ministries, known for books and Bible studies that help readers grow in their walk with God. Dave Gillespie brings the behind-the-scenes engine - design, layout, systems, and operations - that helps the ministry reach more people. Essential listening if you’re navigating a career shift, building something with your spouse, or wondering whether the slow, uncertain path you’re on is actually leading somewhere better. www.IgniteBibleMinistries.com Dave@Impact.ws www.WhatsBeenOnYourMind.com #IgniteBibleMinistries #Ignite #DaveGillaspie #PamGillaspie #JohnWelsh #WelshStudios #WhatsBeenOnYourMind #PastorsKid # #WhatsBeenOnYOuMind #Walking Away #StartingOver #BibleMinistries #PastorsKid #WalkawayFromItAll #QuitYourDreamJob #WalkingAwayFromItAll

Violence and Medical Issues Changed Everything

What happens when the mission you planned is no longer possible? For Caitie Duverné and her family, the answer wasn't giving up—it was discovering that God may have been leading them somewhere bigger. In this powerful episode of What’s Been On Your Mind?, Caitie shares the unexpected story of how her family’s ministry in Haiti was redirected from Port-au-Prince to northern Haiti—and how that detour is now impacting thousands of lives. Today, FAIRE Garden Foundation is helping keep three schools serving around 5,000 students, building a trade school, operating a farm with goats and chickens, providing food and water, and responding to urgent needs in a country facing political instability, violence, and food shortages. But the story doesn't stop with Haiti. Caitie opens up about growing up homeschooled in a missions-minded family, discovering international ministry, meeting her husband Lucson at Moody Bible Institute, and experiencing a serious health crisis that forced her to rethink what it really means to be called to missions. Her conclusion is simple—but challenging: Missions isn't just something you do. It's the way you live. And that realization changed everything. In this conversation, you'll discover: • Why Caitie believes missions is a verb, not a noun • How Fair Garden Foundation's original vision evolved into multiple areas of ministry • How the organization is helping provide education, food, water, and opportunity for thousands of Haitians • What happened to the well they built in their original community after the school had to close • How a serious health crisis changed Caitie's understanding of calling, trust, and surrender • Why sometimes the biggest opportunities come from the plans that fall apart • How Caitie and Lucson are raising three children between two cultures • What it's like serving in Haiti amid political instability and gang control • The realities of Haiti's religious landscape • Why hope remains at the center of their work—even when the headlines are grim This is more than a conversation about Haiti or international missions. It's about what happens when your plans change, your circumstances become difficult, and you're forced to decide whether you'll keep moving forward. If you've ever wondered what it means to follow God when the road doesn't look anything like you expected, stay with this conversation. Caitie's story offers a thoughtful look at faith, family, missions, obedience, surrender, and finding purpose in an unexpected direction. What’s Been On Your Mind? Breeding, Raising & Training Field Golden Retrievers - Field Goldens

Golden retrievers aren’t all the same. What makes a field-bred golden retriever different from a show line golden? How does a dog learn to make a blind retrieve? And what does it really take to train, hunt, compete with, and responsibly breed these remarkable working dogs? In this episode of What’s Been On Your Mind?, John sits down with Rich Barnett to explore the fascinating world of field golden retrievers, hunting dogs, retriever training, hunt tests, field trials, and ethical breeding. Rich and his wife Diane have built their lives around golden retrievers, hunting, training, and competition. Rich explains how field goldens differ from conformation/show goldens—and why their intelligence, stamina, drive, and incredible noses make them such capable working dogs. You'll discover: • Why field-bred golden retrievers look and perform differently from show-line goldens • How retriever training can begin as early as 12–15 weeks • What a blind retrieve is and why it requires memory, precision, and skilled handling • The difference between AKC hunt tests and field trials • How golden retrievers are used in hunting, obedience, scent work, therapy, search and rescue, and cadaver detection • What responsible golden retriever breeding really involves • Why health clearances and pedigree selection matter • The surprising costs involved in breeding, including artificial insemination, C-sections, and raising puppies • The Morris Animal Foundation’s Lifetime Golden Retriever Study • The importance of mentors in developing successful retrievers and trainers • Why Wisconsin has become an important area for retriever training Whether you're a golden retriever owner, dog lover, bird hunter, retriever trainer, breeder, or simply fascinated by what highly trained dogs can do, there's plenty to learn in this conversation. This isn't just a story about beautiful dogs. It's a look inside the intelligence, training, discipline, genetics, and dedication behind a truly exceptional working retriever. From Punch Cards to ai: 52 Years of Technology, Problem-Solving & Curiosity

What can 52 years working with computers teach us? Bryan’s technology journey started as a teenager, inspired by Star Trek and fascinated by computers he didn’t even have access to yet. Five decades later, his career has taken him from computer punch cards and large mainframes to remote work, Windows 95, Y2K and now artificial intelligence. But this isn’t just a story about technology. It’s a story about solving problems other people couldn’t solve, staying curious, and learning how to adapt when the world keeps changing. In this episode, Bryan shares how he: • Cut a seven-hour computer report down to just seven minutes • Led a critical $3 million Y2K project with a 50-person team • Simplified technology problems that others couldn’t crack • Experienced the evolution of the workplace from mainframes to remote work and ai • Adapted and thrived through some of the biggest changes in technology over five decades • And is now working on a new book project designed to help families protect their digital information after a loved one passes away And there’s a bigger lesson behind all of it. Bryan’s story shows why curiosity may be one of the most valuable skills you can have, Especially when you’re trying to keep up with technology that seems to change faster every year. Stay to the end for his perspective on what decades of working with technology have taught him about problem-solving, adapting to change, and staying ready for whatever comes next. Discipline Without Yelling or Losing Your Authority

Your child keeps testing the limits… because the limits aren't clear! Discipline doesn't have to mean yelling, threats, or endless punishment. In this Part 2 of Calm Authority Wins, child behavior specialist Mike Welsh reveals a practical approach to parenting that helps children understand boundaries and helps parents stay calm when emotions are running high. But there's a catch: the way you respond in the heat of the moment can either teach responsibility… or create the next power struggle. Mike Welsh returns with a real world conversation about discipline, consequences, timeouts, boundaries, consistency, sibling conflict, and what to do when kids push back. And the examples aren't theoretical. Mike shares stories from childhood and parenting. Including the bike left in the yard, the hot stove lesson he never forgot, and the punishment that finally made ownership click. In this episode, you'll discover: Why timeouts can work when they're appropriate for a child's age and the behavior How a simple three-strike system can make boundaries predictable Why consistency matters more than volume How to prevent discipline from turning into a power struggle What to do when children play one parent against the other How to match a consequence to the behavior instead of using random punishment Why natural consequences can teach responsibility better than another lecture How to handle sibling conflict without making the situation worse How spouses can stay united when discipline gets difficult Why saying “because I love you” can completely change the emotional tone of correction The bigger lesson? Kids don't need parents who are perfect. They need parents who are clear, calm, consistent, and willing to teach. When children know where the boundary is and know what happens when they cross it, there is less guessing, less arguing, and less chaos! And when parents stop trying to win the battle and start focusing on teaching responsibility, discipline can become one of the most powerful ways we help our kids grow. If you've ever found yourself yelling the same instruction five times, arguing over consequences, or wondering why your child keeps testing the same boundary, watch this episode all the way through. You'll come away with practical parenting strategies you can start using today. Watch this Part 2 of Calm Authority Wins and discover how calm, consistent authority can change the way you handle discipline. If this conversation helps you, like the video, subscribe, and share it with another parent who could use a little more calm and a lot less chaos. www.WhatsBeenOnYourMind.com #Parenting #ParentingTips #PositiveParenting #Discipline #ChildBehavior #MikeWelsh #JohnWelsh #WhatsBeenOnYourMind #WelshStudios #CalmDiscipline #ChildExpert #ParentingAdvice #ParentingTips #childdiscipline #positivediscipline #parentingstrategies #consequencesfor kids #calmparenting #calm authority #powerstruggleswithkids #defiantchildren #difficultbehavior #familyconflict #consistentparenting #timeoutstrategies #parentinghacks #raisingkids, #behaviormanagement #effectivediscipline #howtodisciplinechildren

Stop Children's Arguing - Secrets to get your child to listen

What if the answer to calmer parenting isn’t stricter punishment but better teaching? Child behavior specialist Mike Welsh reveals practical ways to stop power struggles, set consequences that actually make sense, and lead your children with calm authority instead of constant conflict. And one simple phrase may completely change the way you handle difficult behavior. In Part One, Mike and host John Welsh explore practical parenting strategies for handling defiance, emotional outbursts, discipline, consequences, and family conflict. You’ll learn why consistency matters more than perfection, why consequences should fit the behavior, and how changing the way you respond can change the entire dynamic. If you’re a parent, grandparent, teacher, or caregiver who is tired of arguing, repeating yourself, and wondering what to do next, this conversation offers a calmer, more effective approach to raising and guiding kids. Farming for over 100 years

What does it really take to keep a family farm alive for more than 100 years? Dale and Julianne Fisher are third-generation Iowa farmers whose family has been working the land for generations. But this isn’t the simple, old-fashioned farm story you might expect. From horse-drawn plows and hand harvesting to GPS-guided combines and precision agriculture, their family has watched farming completely transform — and they’ve had to transform with it. In this episode of What’s Been On Your Mind?, Dale and Julianne take us inside the fascinating world of modern farming and reveal just how much has changed — and how much hard work, knowledge, and family commitment has remained the same. Dale traces the Fisher family story back to a century farm purchased by his grandfather in 1914, a property that began as one of the first stagecoach stops west of the Mississippi. From there, we explore what farm life looked like generations ago and what it takes to run a farm today. You’ll discover: • How corn yields have more than doubled over the past 50 years • Why today’s combines require different settings for corn, soybeans, oats, and wheat • How GPS and precision agriculture have changed the way farmers work the land • Where grain goes after it leaves the field — from ethanol plants and livestock feed to co-ops and export markets • What farming and food preservation looked like before refrigeration • How families once used salt, smoke, and lard to preserve meat • Why the idea of the “simple family farm” misses just how technical modern agriculture has become • What it was like growing up on a farm where chickens, hogs, and cattle were part of everyday life • How farming terminology can sound very different to someone who didn’t grow up around agriculture Dale also shares stories from a time when families produced and preserved far more of their own food, while Julianne offers a fascinating perspective on how much of modern farming is misunderstood by people who live far removed from rural life. And there’s a bigger story here. Every time you sit down to eat, there’s a farmer, a field, a piece of equipment, a supply chain, and generations of knowledge behind that food. What looks simple on your plate can be incredibly complex behind the scenes. If you’re curious about American farming, family farms, agriculture, food production, farming technology, rural life, or where your food really comes from, this conversation will give you a whole new appreciation for the people who grow it. From horse-drawn plows to GPS-guided combines, this is the story of a family farm that survived by learning how to change. If this episode gives you a new appreciation for farming, share it with someone who might enjoy seeing where their food really comes from. www.WhatsBeenOnYourMind.com www.WelshStudios.net #Farming #Agriculture #FamilyFarm #AmericanFarming #Iowa #IowaFarming, #FarmLife #PrecisionAgriculture #FoodProduction #WhatsBeenOnYourMind #Welsh, #JohnWelsh, #WelshStudios

    Marriage Takes Grace

What if some of the biggest problems in marriage aren’t caused by what your spouse does — but by the thoughts and expectations you bring to the situation? In this episode of What’s Been On Your Mind?, Michelle Lentz, author of Hey Beginner Wife and creator of the popular @BeginnerWife community, shares the marriage mindset shifts that can help newlyweds, strengthen seasoned marriages, and help couples see each other differently. Michelle and her husband Steve have been married for more than 40 years, and she shares the lessons, mistakes, and discoveries that have shaped their marriage — including one simple idea that can change the way you respond to everyday frustrations: “Believe the best.” We talk about: • Why self-control in marriage starts with controlling your own thoughts • How appreciation can completely change the tone of a relationship • What happens when comparisons and unmet expectations steal your gratitude • Why thinking “appreciate” instead of simply “respect” can change how you see your spouse • How to bring up difficult issues without putting your spouse on the defensive • When to let a complaint go — and when it really needs to be discussed • Why Michelle avoids bringing up things her husband simply cannot change • How journaling can help you process frustration before it becomes an argument • Why words like “always” and “never” can quickly derail a conversation • The role shared values, commitment, and faith can play in building a lasting marriage • How prayer became one of Michelle’s most powerful tools as a wife Michelle also opens up about what surprised her most about marriage, how her family shaped her expectations, and what more than four decades of marriage have taught her about love, conflict, forgiveness, and commitment. Whether you’re newly married, preparing for marriage, or you’ve been married for decades, this conversation offers practical wisdom you can put to work right away. Stop reacting. Start appreciating. Believe the best. And build a marriage that lasts. Michelle Lentz is the author of Hey Beginner Wife and the creator of the @BeginnerWife Instagram and TikTok community.
