Bitcoin Is More Than Money. It Might Be a Physics Breakthrough
What does Bitcoin have to do with physics, thermodynamics, entropy, information theory, and the nature of time itself? In this episode, Jack and Nick explore the idea that Bitcoin is more than a monetary network—it is a physical and informational system worth studying through the lens of fundamental physics.The conversation starts with proof of work and the often-repeated claim that Bitcoin is “backed by energy.” But what does that actually mean physically? Jack and Nick argue that Bitcoin creates a relationship between energy, computation, information, memory, and time that may give us a new way to think about concepts usually kept in separate academic disciplines. We get into thermodynamics, Shannon entropy, the double-spend problem, the measurement problem, conservation of information, discrete vs. continuous time, and the limits of our existing models of physics. Their thesis is not simply that Bitcoin uses energy, but that proof of work may connect physical work and information in a way that did not exist before Bitcoin. That leads to a much bigger question: What if we have been looking at Bitcoin through too narrow a lens?Jack and Nick challenge the assumption that Bitcoin should primarily be understood as money, economics, or computer science. Instead, they ask whether examining Bitcoin as a physical system could reveal something deeper about measurement, truth, entropy, and how information persists through time. We also explore the relationship between Bitcoin’s double-spend solution and the measurement problem in physics, why they believe these ideas are connected, and what that could mean for questions surrounding quantum computing and Bitcoin. These are ambitious and speculative ideas—but that is exactly the point of the conversation: to examine Bitcoin as an open experiment rather than assume we already understand what it is.
