We Ain't Dead Yet

Constance Bauer and Lori Dube

Lori Dube and Constance Bauer, long time friends, embark on an intimate journey chronicling their deep conversations about life, love, and aging.  As her cover picture surely attests, Constance is more "furious" with the aging process and the way women in their third act are ghosted by society, and Lori is more "curious" about how she can lean into and learn from this aging process. In this podcast we will unpack issues that are impacting the hearts and souls of women over 60, as we walk together into the unknown of what lies ahead for us all. We hope you will join us on this journey.

Lyrics to our Theme Song, "Woman," composed by Julia Fortman

You can’t break me down, ‘cause I’m a woman.

Strong and powerful, just like I should be.

Try to cut me out, I’d like to see you try.

We may not be young, but we’re still kicking.

Out and having fun, cause life’s worth living.

I’m not sitting down…you’ll see me eye to eye.

I’ll be here and relevant ‘til the day I die.

You Can't Be What You Don't See!

Today, we talk about a superpower that society often tries to strip away from those of us in our 60s and beyond – the power of being seen. Our guest, Stephanie O'Dell spent years styling over 6,000 women for brands like Athleta. In her 50s, she decided to completely reinvent her career and herself. With no prior experience running a talent agency, she launched Celebrate The Gray—a modeling and consulting agency that now represents over 400 silver-haired women who are redefining beauty. Join us for real talk about trying new and hard things in your older years, anti-ageism, how to make yourself visible again, how AI is impacting the movement to age naturally, and real ways that you and I can play an important part in the campaign for ads depicting real, aging women. We end with a fun rapid-fire round of questions about Stephanie's favorite silver celebrities, best color for women over 60, and more. SHOW NOTES Celebrate the Gray Instagram Upcoming: Stephanie will be an Expert Panelist for a Sacntuary-Sponsored Screening of "Your Roots Are Showing" (This amazing documentary was produced by Ilise Harris, who will be a guest on our podcast in a few weeks, and the panelists include a former guest of ours, the inimitable Jacqui Getz). Do you want to live life more boldly? Tune in as we get real with the "Queen of Elderstack," the powerhouse journalist, creator of the acclaimed [B]OLD AGE Substack -- Debbie Weil. Debbie has been leading discussions about Aging and Reinvention for years. We discuss how friendship is a “silver bullet” in terms of the many health benefits it brings, including improvements in cardiovascular health, sleep, immune function, and reduced risk of mental illness and dementia. Jaimie describes how venting to your friends can be a manipulative, but effective social strategy. We contemplate the differences between men’s and women’s friendships, ponder what to call the process of “friend flirting or dating,” and examine the importance of intergenerational friendships. Finally, for those more wonkily inclined, Jaimie discusses her fascinating research on the neuroscience of friendship. Hair We Are: I'd Rather Dye Than Go Grey

We hear from Ellen about her surprise that the Dye-Grey dilemma is causing so much confusion. Don't Burn Your Journals Yet: Finding Yourself on the Written Page

Constance and Lori speak to Ellen Blum Barish, a writing coach and memoir author. Even if writing is not your thing, listen in to our lively conversation about leaning in to this form of creativity as a tool for growth and reflection as we age. For starters, we discuss the hidden value of writing for people who don’t like to write. Ellen suggests looking through the old stuff we tuck in drawers and stash away in closets and think about the stories they have to tell. Also, think about using photos we have stored in our phones as prompts for our writing We jump back to our adolescence when many of us poured ourselves into our diaries and journals, and used writing as an early form of self expression. And at this time of life, we explored the possibility of using writing as part of a Life Review. This can be an important process that makes connections over the course of our life to look at and rewrite the narratives of our lives. Finally, we offer a fun little writing challenge to our listeners that may land you on the WADY website. So listen in and get your creative juices flowing. When Roles Reverse: Caring for Parents in Our 60s

Constance and Lori speak to Ramsay Ringo, a career coach and expert on caring for elderly parents. We discuss the unique challenges of supporting aging parents when you are in your 60s yourself. Ramsay emphasizes the importance of a simplified approach to avoid overwhelming caregivers, and provides many practical tips. We explore the tension between ensuring the safety of elderly parents and respecting their desire for independence and autonomy. We also cover the complexities of coordinating care across different family members and locations, and ways to talk to our adult children about caring for elderly parents. Finally, Ramsay coaches us on practical ways to prepare for our own aging. Please join us for this very constructive discussion. And don’t forget to hang around for our “After Thoughts” where Lori and Constance unpack the episode and chat about our thoughts on what we heard. Shocking Herself Awake: Gail Rice on Reinvention, Risk and Radical Acceptance at 70

Constance and Lori speak to Gail Rice, psychologist and writer, based in Sydney Australia, about her recent life-imitating-art birthday celebration. For her 70th birthday, inspired by Emma Thompson in the film "Good Luck to You Leo Grande," Gail hired not one, but two male escorts. She clearly touched a nerve, as her story went viral. She's been interviewed all over the world and recently had her television debut. Gail explains that these encounters were less about the sex and more about "shocking herself awake," and finding her voice. We also explore themes of reinvention, risk-taking, late-bloomers, body acceptance and the boundaries of a therapeutic relationship. Gail also reveals her next adventure. Please join us for this incredible empowerment story. And don’t forget to hang around for our “Afterthoughts” where Lori and Constance unpack the episode and chat about our thoughts on what we heard.
