We have had such an amazing time that I am sure we will eventually do another round of horror movie blind spots. Also...The Gargyle Podcast is about to go through a bit of rebranding. But, rather than shutting everything down and relaunching in a few months, we are going to be rolling out gradual updates as we continue to provide new episodes (including our coverage of Knoxville Horror Film Festival and Frightening Ass Film Festival). The main focus of the rebranding will be an updated name, logo, and theme music for the podcast. There might be a few other minor additions/updates as well and there might be some things that go through multiple updates (for example, there will be a temporary change to the theme music as the official music is being worked on) as we move forward. CONjuration Con: 2018 coverage and 2019 promo
In two short weeks, Atlanta once again joins the wizarding world as CONjuration descends and provides a magical weekend for fans of Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and all things fantasitcal!! CONjuration was founded in 2014 and each year the con becomes bigger and better (but without outgrowing its roots or forgetting why it was started in the first place)! The variety of programming, panels, special events, and vendors provides truly does make it a convention for everyone who loves magic and/or fantasy! It is an incredibly family friendly atmosphere that keeps the childlike whimsy, but without being a convention just for kids. I truly love CONjuration and have been every year! However, this past year, I was not able to spend nearly as much time as usual as my wife and I had a three month old child. So, even though I was only able to get just a few interviews, I still had an absolute blast with what little time I was able to attend. This German horror movie was ahead of its time in terms of cinematography, narrative structure, and subject matter...but, maybe a little too far ahead of its time. While still a powerful film with some scenes that are absolutely brutal, the overall impact of the film is not quite as intense as some of the films that have followed it. Eraserhead (1977) - Horror Movie Blind Spots
Last year, Eric and I concluded our two months of Halloween coverage with "fear of being a bad horror movie geek week" in which we watched iconic horror movies that we had never seen before. And while it was a little embarrassing to admit some of the films that we had never seen (especially with how much we love horror movies), we have long said that we do not think that anyone should be shamed for movies that they have not yet seen. Instead, there should be excitement for the person because they still have new cinematic experiences ahead of them! So, for this year's 60 Days til Halloween coverage, Eric and I are focusing entirely on horror movie blind spots! Unlike last year, we will not be putting out a daily episode during the months of September and October. However, we have some awesome movies (we hope) and some amazing guests lined up for this year!! We will also be doing daily posts on social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) as part of our 60 Days til Halloween celebration...and we are still going to do our best to get a daily horror movie viewing in (though, that's not a guarantee). Even though our 60 Days til Halloween coverage does not officially start until September 1st, we are pre-gaming a bit by doing a review of Eraserhead (a movie that neither Eric nor I have ever seen before) because Central Cinema will be screening Eraserhead on August 30th and September 1st - and we wanted to make sure to tell everyone (in or around Knoxville) to go see this absurd, emotional, amazing film!! Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 - 2011 (analysis)
Adam and I started working through the Harry Potter series a couple of years ago and in tonight's episode, we finally wrap up our coverage (of the original 8 films...) with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2! In tonight's episode, we discuss how terrible James Potter is, how problematic the wizarding world is from a sociocultural perspective (and how that might have been done on purpose...), and an abundance of other questions and comments about the entire series that we hadn't mentioned before (and some that we we probably have). Class of '99: 20 Years Later...
1999 was an amazing year for cinema, giving the world some of the most beloved, groundbreaking, quotable, and rewatchable movies of the modern era! Ok...that might be slight hyperbole, but it's definitely true that 1999 had some amazing films!! And while Eric and I would love to cover practically every movie from 1999 (and probably will get around to it, eventually), we have both been swamped at work lately. So, on tonight's episode, rather than giving a detailed review, we are doing something a bit different. Tonight's episode is a sort of a "what if?" episode where Eric and I come up with theories on where some of the characters from some of our favorite films from 1999 have ended up 20 years later. We have the utmost respect for each of the movies we discuss. But, if you've ever listened to the podcast before, you should know...things get a bit silly.... Camp Gargyle: Epilogue - with Matt Mercer and Graham Skipper
Camp Gargyle 2019 has ended and The Chimerican and I have returned home. And just like kids returning from real summer camps, we couldn't wait to share our stories with our friends...so, naturally, we called up two of our favorite people: Matt Mercer and Graham Skipper!! As expected, it doesn't take very long for things to get silly. But, amidst all the silliness, we discuss (among other things) VFW and Bliss - two recent projects from Joe Begos (Bliss was recently announced as one of the films that will be playing at the Knoxville Horror Film Festival this year), some of our own personal camp experiences, and whether or not Friday the 13th actually is a "summer camp" movie. When Eric and I first started talking about a summer camp series, WHAS was one of the first films I thought of and there was no question that we would be covering it. While there was some discussion about where it would be in the lineup, I think that closing the series out with it was the right decision...it is the perfect mix of a genuine camp movie (hitting all of the summer camp tropes, but done in such a way where they are played sincerely) and a camp movie parody (lampooning the camp tropes with the same level of sincerity), with juuuuust a dash of horror/thriller. I know that humor is subjective and not everyone will have the same sense of humor that I do. But, in my opinion, Wet Hot American Summer is a perfect mixture of smart, silly, and absurd comedy that only gets funnier each time I watch it! So put on your favorite flannel shirt, put away your dishes, and work on your super secret handshake as Eric and I go through the training montage in our review of Wet Hot American Summer!! The Crest - 2017 (review)
Taking a short break from Camp Gargyle, Eric and I review The Crest, the most recent documentary from Mark Christopher Covino. The Crest is a heartwarming documentary about two cousins who share a love of surfing who meet for the first time as they discover more about the history of their family and the similarities they share with their ancestry on the Blasket Islands in Ireland. While The Crest is seemingly drastically different from Mark's previous documentary, A Band Called Death, both films share a central theme of family and leaving a legacy for the future by connecting with the past. With beautiful cinematography, an engrossing score, and a heartwarming tale, The Crest is a film that can, and should, be enjoyed by everyone!! Camp Gargyle: Sleepaway Camp (1983) review
Gooooooood morning, campers!!! And welcome to another beautiful day at Camp Gargyle, where Camp Counselor Chimerican and I are continuing our summer camp series!! Unlike our previous movies that are a bit more lighthearted and motivational (of sorts), today's film veers off into the horror genre with Sleepaway Camp!! It is undeniable that this film has technical flaws, deeply problematic scenes and plot points, and an unavoidable comparison to Friday the 13th...but the motivations of the characters, the (possibly unintentional?) deeper themes, and unforgettable ending make Sleepaway Camp a film with plenty to discuss!! So watch out for boats, bees, and boiling water as Eric and I take a stab at the cult classic, Sleepaway Camp!!
