Whose Brain Are You Renting?
An agent is not intelligent by itself. Its intelligence comes from a model, and that model almost always belongs to somebody else. This episode is about that dependency, the state of the art in escaping it, and how to build an agentification strategy that still gives you choices a year from now. We separate the two dependencies hiding in every agent: on a specific model, whose quirks your prompts quietly mold themselves around, and on a specific vendor, whose pricing, rate limits, uptime and deprecation calendar you now live inside. Then the numbers: 94 percent of tech leaders fear lock-in, and only about 11 percent actually managed to switch their primary vendor last year. The good news first. The plumbing is solved: a de facto common interface, the LLM gateway as a universal switchboard, and frameworks where the model is just a line of configuration. We name the real tools with honest trade-offs: LiteLLM, Portkey, OpenRouter, and the gateways from Kong and Cloudflare. Then the hard part nobody sells you: a gateway moves the traffic, not the trust. Prompt portability does not exist, because prompts co-evolve with one model's personality. Finally, the strategy: what future-proof really means, the three postures and what each costs, and six principles that keep you free, ending on the honest verdict. Buy the pipe. Do the trust yourself. No hype. No leaderboard scores. Narrated by a synthetic voice, on purpose. A podcast from Vesster.
