The Forgotten UFO Case that Changed Aviation History

Send us Fan Mail The UFO Case That Silenced Airline Pilots What happens when a respected airline captain publicly reports a UFO... and refuses to change his story? In this Summer "Best Of" repeat from Season 2, Episode 16, Michael Ryan and Christine Scott revisit one of the most significant—and often overlooked—cases in UFO history. On the night of February 24, 1959, Captain Peter Killian and the crew of American Airlines Flight 937 watched three mysterious objects pace their DC-6 for more than half an hour as they flew from Newark to Detroit. Other airline crews confirmed the sighting, passengers were invited to look out the windows, and the story made headlines across North America. But when official explanations failed to satisfy the witnesses, something changed. Many researchers believe the Killian Incident marked the beginning of a new era—one in which commercial airline pilots became increasingly reluctant to speak publicly about UFO encounters. Was this simply another unexplained sighting, or did it fundamentally change the relationship between aviation and the UFO phenomenon? Join Michael and Christine as they examine the original reports, the Air Force response, Donald Keyhoe's involvement, and why this remarkable case still matters more than sixty-five years later. Also in this episode: UFO books that make great additions to any library A "Moment in UFO History" featuring pioneering investigator Anne Druffel Canadian Civil Aviation Anomalies An audio excerpt from Humanoids and High Strangeness: Twenty True UFO Encounters by Preston Dennett If you enjoy the show, please subscribe, leave a review, and share UFO Talker with a friend. Two Veteran Halifax Police officers describe their black triangle UFO encounter

Send us Fan Mail Season 2, Episode 10 (Originally Released on November 8, 2023) What would you do if something enormous, silent, and impossible drifted across the night sky while you were on duty? In this Summer "Best Of" episode of UFO Talker, Michael Ryan is joined by retired Halifax Police officers Rick Prescott and Rob Furlong, who recount one of Canada's most compelling police UFO encounters. While working the night shift in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the two veteran officers observed a massive black triangular object slowly crossing the sky. The craft made no sound, displayed no conventional means of propulsion, and moved so slowly that both men immediately realized they were witnessing something unlike any aircraft they had ever encountered. As the object continued across the sky, dispatch contacted both Halifax International Airport and CFB Shearwater to determine whether anything appeared on radar. The answer was the same from both locations: nothing. For years, the officers kept their experience private, concerned about the stigma that often follows anyone reporting an unexplained aerial encounter. Now, they share the remarkable details of what they witnessed and explain why, after all these years, they still cannot identify what they saw. In this episode: The complete account of the Halifax Black Triangle UFO Why two experienced police officers immediately ruled out conventional aircraft The calls made to airport and military authorities Why the sighting remained private for years Additional unexplained UFO reports from Nova Scotia If you enjoy carefully researched UFO cases based on firsthand witness testimony, this is an episode you won't want to miss. Did U.S. Intelligence Agents Threaten the Lives of U.S. Military Personnel After the Rendlesham Forest Incident?

Send us Fan Mail Season 2 Episode 8. From the UFO Talker Summer "Best Of' repeat series What really happened after the witnesses of the Rendlesham Forest Incident reported what they had seen? In this episode of UFO Talker, host Michael Ryan welcomes former British detective Gary Heseltine, one of the world's foremost researchers of the Rendlesham Forest Incident and author of the acclaimed book Non-Human. Most documentaries focus on what happened in Rendlesham Forest during the nights of December 1980. This interview goes in a different direction. Gary discusses the disturbing allegations that several U.S. Air Force witnesses were subjected to intimidating interrogations following the incident. The conversation explores claims of threats, intense questioning, alleged attempts to influence witness testimony, and why these accounts have remained largely overlooked for more than four decades. Drawing upon his experience as a police detective and years of investigative research, Gary explains why he believes these alleged interrogations deserve far more attention than they have received. Michael and Gary also discuss: • The testimony of U.S. military witnesses. • The role of the Air Force Office of Special Investigations (OSI). • Allegations of witness intimidation following the Rendlesham Forest Incident. • David Grusch and the Congressional UAP hearings. • The proposed UAP Disclosure Act and what it could mean for the future of disclosure. • Gary's extensive database of UFO reports submitted by British police officers. This episode examines one of the most controversial questions surrounding the Rendlesham Forest Incident: What happened to the witnesses after they came forward? About our guest Gary Heseltine served for 25 years as a British police officer, including 19 years as a detective constable. Since 2002 he has maintained a database documenting UFO reports from police officers throughout the United Kingdom. He is Vice President of the International Coalition for Extraterrestrial Research (ICER) and the author of Non-Human, one of the most detailed investigations ever published on the Rendlesham Forest Incident. Did Rex Heflin photograph a real UFO in 1965?/ We take a deep dive into one of the most famous UFO photo cases in history

Send us Fan Mail Season 1 Episode 32. On this Summer rerun episode of UFO Talker, host Michael Ryan and commentator Christine Scott take a deep dive into one of the most famous and controversial UFO photo cases ever documented—the Rex Heflin photographs of August 3, 1965. For more than half a century, the four photographs taken by Orange County road maintenance worker Rex Heflin near Santa Ana, California, have been debated by believers, skeptics, scientists, military investigators, and some of the biggest names in UFO research. Were these images evidence of a genuine unidentified flying object, or was there another explanation? Michael and Christine examine the case from the beginning, including: • The events of August 3, 1965, when Heflin photographed a disc-shaped object from his maintenance truck. • The location of the sighting near the Marine Corps Air Station at El Toro. • The Polaroid camera Heflin used and why it played an important role in later photographic analysis. • Reports of unusual radio interference at the time of the sighting. • Witness descriptions of a rotating light within the object that are rarely discussed today. • Investigations conducted by the U.S. Air Force, Marine Corps personnel, NICAP, and other UFO researchers. • The involvement of noted scientist Dr. James McDonald and researcher Anne Druffel. • Project Blue Book's controversial conclusion that the photographs were a hoax. • Claims that the object was merely a thrown hubcap or pie plate—and why later analysis challenged those explanations. • The mysterious disappearance of Heflin's original photographs after being taken by men claiming to be military investigators. • The equally mysterious return of the original photographs nearly three decades later. • Modern photographic and computer analyses that suggest the object's reported size, distance, and position were consistent with Heflin's original account. The episode also explores the possibility that the famous UFO seen in the television series The Invaders may have been inspired by the Heflin photographs, and discusses why these images remain among the most iconic UFO photographs ever taken. Was Rex Heflin an honest witness who captured something extraordinary, or is there another explanation waiting to be discovered? A Manitoba Farmer Reported a UFO and a Humanoid/ The RCMP and Canadian Military Investigated

Send us Fan Mail Season 3 Episode 11. As part of UFO Talker's Summer "Best Of" Repeat Series, we revisit one of the most fascinating and little-known Canadian UFO encounters on record. On October 24, 1970, near MacGregor, Manitoba, a young farmer named Gerald Adams reported an extraordinary experience that would eventually attract the attention of the RCMP, the Canadian Military, and the National Research Council of Canada. According to Adams, what began as the observation of a strange object in the night sky soon evolved into something far more remarkable. Returning to the location after dropping off his girlfriend, Adams reported encountering a landed UFO and observing a small humanoid figure wearing what appeared to be a metallic silver suit and helmet. He would later state that he approached to within approximately fifty feet of both the object and the figure. The case was taken seriously enough that Adams was interviewed by Captain G.M. Winterburn of the Canadian Forces Operations Centre. The interview was recorded on reel-to-reel tape, and correspondence involving the RCMP and government scientists followed. Questions remain to this day about missing RCMP documentation connected to the investigation and whether the original military recordings still exist. In this episode, host Michael Ryan and commentator Christine Scott examine the original documents, witness statements, military correspondence, and the unanswered questions that continue to surround one of Manitoba's most intriguing UFO cases. In This Episode The October 24, 1970 MacGregor, Manitoba encounter Gerald Adams' eyewitness account The reported landed UFO The silver-suited humanoid RCMP involvement in the investigation Canadian Military interviews and recordings National Research Council correspondence Missing reports and unresolved mysteries Why this case remains significant more than fifty years later Was Gerald Adams the witness to a remarkable close encounter, or is there another explanation for what occurred that night on the Manitoba prairie? David Oranchak, the man who cracked the Zodiac Killer's 340 Cipher, decodes a UFO message and weighs in on alien symbols and hidden codes.

Send us Fan Mail Summer Rerun Series. This episode is from Season 3 Episode 27. The Zodiac Killer's infamous 340 Cipher remained unsolved for more than 51 years. Governments, intelligence agencies, professional cryptologists, and amateur codebreakers all attempted to solve it. In December 2020, a three-person team finally succeeded. One of those team members was cryptologist and software developer David Oranchak. In this episode of UFO Talker, David joins host Michael Ryan to discuss the fascinating world of cryptology, the story behind the Zodiac 340 Cipher, and what it was like to help solve one of the most famous unsolved codes in modern history. The conversation then takes an unexpected turn into ufology. In 1976, a coded message arrived at the offices of Official UFO Magazine. The letter contained a series of strange symbols and was never deciphered. Nearly fifty years later, former editor Bernie O'Connor provided a copy of the mysterious cipher to UFO Talker. David Oranchak accepted the challenge. Using modern codebreaking techniques, David successfully decoded the message and explains exactly how he did it. He walks listeners through the methods used to solve substitution ciphers, the role of frequency analysis, and the surprising message hidden within the decades-old document. Michael and David also explore a larger question that has fascinated UFO researchers for decades: if a genuine extraterrestrial message were ever discovered, would humans actually be capable of decoding it? Topics discussed include: • The Zodiac Killer and the famous 340 Cipher • How cryptologists break difficult codes • The Bernie Official UFO Cipher • Frequency analysis and substitution ciphers • The Rendlesham Forest symbols • Whether UFO symbols could ever be translated • The challenges of deciphering an unknown language • The Rosetta Stone and lessons from history This episode offers a fascinating look at the intersection of cryptology, mystery, and the UFO phenomenon.
