In this episode Clare O’Reilly is joined by Matthew Thomas and Steph O’Connor from South Australia to explore Wrong Blood in Tube (WBIT) — a critical risk in the pre-transfusion testing process and a challenge faced by transfusion services worldwide. What happens when the blood in a tube doesn’t match the patient identifiers on the sample label? WBIT occurs when the blood in a sample tube does not belong to the patient identified on the label. This can happen when blood is collected from the wrong patient but labelled with the intended patient’s details, or when blood is collected from the correct patient but labelled with another patient’s details.
