The Xfoils

The XFoils Podcast is where the world of foiling gets unpacked—one chaotic session at a time. Hosted by Dylan Shewfelt, with cohost Walt and a rotating cast of riders, innovators, shapers, and water junkies. We cover gear, progression, downwind misery, Parawing experiments, and the ridiculous community moments that make this sport what it is. Sometimes insightful, sometimes sarcastic, always passionate. - this is foiling from the inside! "The truth is out there."

Case #78 – Project Drag, Progress With Purpose

Walt and I sat down with some of the crew behind a really interesting project that we believe is different, and right up our alley. Ken Adgate, Kyle Touhey, Michael McKinley and Fred Hope, the only Slingshot man in the room bridging the gap between this band of misfits and a brand willing to take it on. We think Slingshot made the right call to push progress and go against the grain. How did Project Drag come about, the story behind the crew, and what it means for where Slingshot is heading. This is the kind of project that gives a brand real momentum and speaks directly to the hyper focused foiler who actually cares about what's happening under their feet. We get into the drag, on takeoff yes, but more importantly the drag when you're up on foil and how we actually use the board to ride. The Tuttle box Michael designed, the collaboration with Slingshot, and the push to make this an industry standard, a parallel platform alongside tracks that other brands can adopt. That's a big deal, and we feel everyone did right by it. And then we just talk about how we ride boards. Stance, style, real foil talk with people who really care. This was a good one. LOVED this! 🎙️ Sponsored by Kite Puerto Rico + the N1 Surf Shop Support the podcast by subscribing, dropping a 5⭐ review, and grabbing your gear from someone you trust: 👉 www.KitePuertoRico.com If you can't get gear from us but still want to support the podcast: ☕ https://buymeacoffee.com/xfoils 📲 Follow along: @TheXFoils

Case #77 – The Hatch V2, From The Source

The Naish Hatch V2 was our favorite all round wing of the season, mentioned in Case 75, for someone getting into the sport all the way to the high end performance, and we meant it. So who better to chat about it than the guy who actually designed the thing. Ewan Jaspan, three time Kite Park League World Champion, kite and parawing designer at Naish, and someone who clearly knows and cares about designing for a wide range of users. We dig into the Hatch V2, what things he looked at, why it performs the way it does. Case #76 – Mike Raper, From North To Foil Drive

Mike Raper needs no intro. Thirty years in the watersports industry, the guy who has built brands from the ground up and knows what it takes to move something to the next level. I personally know Mike from North, we have worked close on some small projects in the past that I really enjoyed. Having him as our inside man at Foil Drive feels pretty good, we like having people on the inside! We catch up on what life looked like after North, and what brought him to Foil Drive. More importantly, what his role means for where Foil Drive is heading. This is just a bit of gear chat, more about vision, growth, and what happens when someone with Mike's experience steps into a brand that's already doing something nobody else is doing. Thanks Mike! Case #75 – Parawing Beat Down

It's been a whole summer. A whole summer of testing, riding, and teasing the market nobody explicitly asked for, but we have an opinion to share obviously. The parawing market has been moving fast, people are in the upgrade phase, and Walt and I have been putting in the work so you don't have to guess so much. Some wings get more love than others, and some get a beat down, but that's because they earned both. Let me summarize a bit. The Ozone Afterburner, highest priced on the market right now, so they better deliver. The PPC Orbit, our favorite high end parawing for sailing upwind downwind when you want that extra good feel. The Naish Hatch V2, our overall favorite wing of the whole test based on performance, price and useability, and yeah we said what we said. The F-One Quest, possibly the best beginner parawing out there, and how it stacks up side by side against the Pocket Rocket V2 might surprise you. The Frigate V2, no news, not out yet, but the expectations are high and we had thoughts on their release timing. Walt and I don't always agree, but on a few of these we were on exactly the same page. Like always, I only sell what I believe in. The Hatch V2 is the one. Case #74 – Gotta Go Back To Move Forward

Walt and I are back and we came with opinions, and some new things tested. This is just a short catch up, we have some larger more focused episodes in mind. We spend way too much time thinking about this sport and what could actually move it forward or backwards! haha. Board design, parawings and how to make sure you don't get seen riding a stripped foil. Walt and I may or may not agree on everything, but if we see enough people saying the same thing, we have to bring it to light. We are having an XFoils event, Hood River at Friem, 2-5pm on the 9th. Case #73 – Trent Carter, Does He Even Downwind?

Feels like he came out of nowhere, but after you get to talking with Trent and see the results, you realize he absolutely belongs there. Came to race and left with some great results this year. Sponsored by Slingshot, now teammates with Edo, the guy who just won his 3rd M2O in a row, that puts some pressure on Trent. We get into the gear, the racing, what it actually does for foiling as a whole, and how Trent and the team got to where they are, and importantly where they are going. We see the chit chat that goes on, or at least was going on during the races. The community has questions and honestly, it's a fair conversation. We asked. It was a good chat. What a genuinely good dude, I really enjoyed connecting with him. Case 72: Tomoko Vs Kaiwi Channel

Tomoko just did the thing. First time M20. Not only did she finish the M20 in some of the most unforgiving conditions they've seen in a while, she did extremely well in all the races leading up. What makes this one different is the journey that got her there. Every downwind session, every suffer-fest, every "why am I doing this" moment — turns out wether she knew it or not, was a perfect recipe for this race. We didn't plan to get emotional, it feels a but inspiring. Gear came up briefly but honestly that wasn't the point. This one's about the channel, the grit, and what it actually takes to get to the finish line.

Case 71 – Unconfirmed But Definitely True

Recorded just now, uploaded just now! We talk about foiling! Mickey needs no introduction. kinda not really. Downwind racer at heart — fully deep in the Parawing, lots of foil knowledge and gets to hear rumours from a guy. We caught up, talked Foil Racing, The Gear and the rumors started. Bad sources, questionable intel, he said she said energy — the good stuff. Case 70: The Piranha, the SR Mast & the Future of F4

Walt and I get Chris Radkowski on the mic, co-founder and designer behind F4 Foils — and this one was a long time coming. We start things off with the Piranha — the foil we've been obsessing over for river shredding and downwind surfing. Compact, quick. We didn't overthink the name. One ride and it was obvious! Then we get into what has us very anxious: the SR mast, the Hammerhead, and the new Tails. Chris Pulls us in and gives us some details im sure followers will love. F4 is headed in the right direction and the future looks fast. This is the kind of conversation that reminds us why we started this podcast. We are taking interest and helping F4 get things rolling. Case 69 - The Great Surf Foil Wrap up

The Great Surf Foil Test is done. All of it.Walt and I have been at this for a while now — more sessions than we can count, more swaps than we probably should have made, and enough hours on the water to finally feel confident saying something real about all of these foils. This episode we talk Naish, Axis, F-one, and KT . Rounding out a test that now covers AFS, Cabrinha, Duotone, F4, Code, FliteLab, Naish, F-one, Axis, and KT — with Lift thrown in as a bonus. Then we hand out the awards. Because why not. Which brands delivered, which surprised us, and which one would we actually take home?Eleven brands. One winnerish. Case 68 — Greg's Back, with his S3 D-Grip parawing

Greg is back. Fourth time on the show, and at this point he might as well have a reserved seat. Like always we keep it casual, Xfoils style. No script, no slides, just three people who love to parawing and talking about what it's like to ride the BRM S3 — the latest generation parawing from BRM, the brand that started the whole category. Talking point this episode: the new D-Grip handle. Shovel handle was taken, so Greg went with the next best thing — and it turns out it actually makes a lot of sense. Walt and I both got our hands on the S3, so you're getting our perspectives on this wing as well as the guy who designed it. We didn't know we wanted it. I dont know if its the handle or the wing, there is something special here. We get into what's new, what's better, and what it actually feels like to ride. Plus the usual that comes with any Xfoils conversation. Thanks Greg — see you on Case #88 or whatever comes next. 🎙️ Sponsored by Kite Puerto Rico + the N1 Surf ShopSupport the podcast by subscribing, dropping a 5⭐ review, and grabbing your gear from someone you trust:www.KitePuertoRico.com If you can't get gear from us but still want to support:https://buymeacoffee.com/xfoils

Case #67 – The Great Surf Foil Test 2

We’re back with Test #2 of the Great Surf Foil, rounding out this first test with a tighter, more pocketed surf foil category. This time we focused on three foils that share a similar DNA—lower aspect, surf-focused, and built to be pushed in the pocket: Flite Lab Flux 707 Cabrinha Whippit 750 Code 740X These foils all wanted to be driven hard in the surf, with reliable pitch through turns and controlled roll—each with its own unique feel underfoot. Different from Test batch 1, a super fun category to ride. Case 66 - The Great Surf Foil Test 1

We’ve been building up to this one… The Great Surf Foil Test is finally here.Walt and I have been putting serious time in, bouncing between foils, swapping setups, and just trying to make sense of all the different feels out there. A lot of riding, some instant clicks, some head-scratchers, and a few that felt just right! So far we’ve got AFS, Duotone, F4, FliteLab, Code, and Cabrinha in the mix. Rather than trying to rank everything, we grouped them into two batches with similar feels just to keep things somewhat under control. This isn’t a spec sheet breakdown. Although you should be able to see the Actual spect of what we tested on our new site: TheXFoils.com.This is real sessions, real surf, back-to-back testing, and trying to answer the only question that really matters:👉 How do these feels under your feet?Different brands, different philosophies, different personalities… and you feel it under feet and the moment you open up the boxes. Case #65: Paul Cooper vs Puerto Rico

Paul Cooper is in the house! In Case 65, we catch up with Paul during his trip to Puerto Rico, chatting about our latest foil adventures and what a few days on the island really feels like when the conditions line up. We throw Paul straight into the mix—epic surf sessions, a killer downwind run with the crew, and plenty of time on the water to see if we could break him. The final verdict from Paul? “Hurt… but not broken.” Just a fun recap of great sessions, plenty of laughs, some new foils for Paul to try, and a full dose of Puerto Rico conditions. Case #64 – The Great Surf Foil Test Begins

We’re announcing our unsponsored surf foil test series that we’ll be running over the next couple of months. The goal? To see what the brands are really doing and find the best feels we can across the board. No bias. No contracts. No filtering. Just honest feedback and real sessions. Brands that have already answered the call and are sending their best: Lift, F-One, Slingshot, AFS, Cabrinha, North, Code, FliteLab, Naish and F4. We’ll also be reaching out to Armstrong, Unifoil, Axis, and Hydrocraft to round things out. If we missed anyone… let us know. This isn’t about a winner. It’s about understanding feel, construction, design philosophy, and what actually translates into performance in the water. We’re fired up. Case #63 – Dialing the Details with Paul Cooper (FoilDrive)

In Case 63, Paul Cooper, a dedicated FoilDrive rider who isn’t tied to any single foil brand. That neutral perspective makes for a great conversation as Paul shares insight on the latest Fusion system, integrated masts, new pods, and how to optimize setups for the best ride possible. This one’s all about those small percentage gains—the little tweaks that add up to smoother, more efficient sessions. Do all the upgrades, do none of them, and you’ll still have fun on a FoilDrive—but for the gear nerds chasing performance, this chat is full of useful takeaways. Paul’s also heading to Puerto Rico next week to get some sessions in with us before we all roll into the FSRL in Cocoa Beach on March 6th. Case #62 – New Logo, New Foils, New Co-Host

So good to be back in the studio with Walt, now officially the co-host. In this episode we catch up on a few things: my South Africa kite-foil trip where I (sadly) did not hit 30m — apparently the right gear really does matter. We’re getting fired up for the upcoming FSRL on March 6th in Cocoa Beach with Billy and the Good Breeze crew. Walt will be joining us for the first time! We will have a smash burger XFoils style get together, stay tuned for the day/ time and location. Im stoked to be participating with the North crew this event again this year. We also get to pull the curtain back a bit on an F4 foil designed specifically for the Gorge. Walt gets to catch Chris up on what the design feels should be for this new, yet-to-be-named Gorge foil we’re really excited to bring to life. Oh, and yeah… we’ve got a new X-Foils logo and branding to show off. Its all THERE! Case #61 – F-One’s Big Shift: New Connection, Better Feels

In Case 61, We get to chat with Doc, Charles, and Julien from F-One for a conversation centered around feel, construction, and change. As most of the community already knows, F-One is transitioning from their long-standing Titan 1 connection to a new interface, which has definitely raised eyebrows among their loyal following. Julien sums it up well: “A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.” This new connection isn’t about trend-hopping — it’s about stiffness, better feedback, and a more modern response as foiling continues to push into higher loads and higher speeds. We talk about why the change, the engineering challenges behind it, and how important it is to listen to the community during a shift this big. For F-One, the new connection had to be a net positive for all users — stronger, stiffer, and with better feel than the Titan interface — to stay relevant in an ever-evolving foil landscape.A refreshingly honest chat about feel, performance, and what it takes to future-proof a system while keeping customers onboard. 🎙️ Sponsored by Kite Puerto Rico + the N1 Surf ShopSupport the podcast by subscribing, dropping a 5⭐ review, and grabbing your gear from someone you trust:👉 www.KitePuertoRico.com If you can’t get gear from us but still want to support the podcast:☕ https://buymeacoffee.com/xfoils 📲 Follow along: @TheXFoils

In Case 59, Walt and I sit down with Kai Calder. Kai has deep roots in foiling, and honestly, there’s so much we could have covered with him. This episode is more about bringing Kai into the conversation—getting some background, hearing his perspective, and setting the stage for more to come. We touch on parts of his journey, how he found his way into foiling, and what shapes his approach today.
