    Africa Goes Vegan!

In this episode, we're shining a light on something that doesn't get nearly enough attention: veganism and animal rights activism across the African continent. Let me ask you something: could you name even one animal rights or vegan activist working in Africa? Or name one African animal rights organization? If not, don't worry—because that's about to change. Today, you're going to meet Majeed Suhuyini, the founder of Vegan Africa News, an amazing initiative dedicated to covering vegan news from across the continent, from food and culture to animal advocacy and activism. We talked about the recent Animal and Vegan Advocacy Summit in Ghana, what it's really like to be vegan within different African cultures, the latest Supreme Court developments in the case concerning dog and cat meat consumption, and so much more. Jainism for Veganism.

Today, we’re highlighting the efforts of passionate Jain animal rights activists who are promoting veganism from within their religious community. And you might be thinking: isn’t Jainism that ancient Indian religion whose core teaching is Ahimsa—the principle of avoiding harm to any living being, including animals, insects, and even microscopic organisms? So how come Jains aren’t already some of the biggest proponents of veganism out there? That’s one of the questions we’ll explore today, along with others, like: What’s the place of spirituality and religion in the vegan movement? What boundaries should you set as a compassionate person? And what does it feel like when religious authorities within your own community oppose your veganism? To discuss all of this, I have with me Ruchika Chitrabhanu, interior designer, founder of The Earthen One, co-founder of Ahimsafest, and Global Advisor for the Jain Vegan Initiative; and Mayur Shah, Chair of the Jain Associations in North America’s Ahimsa Eco-Vegan Committee. Hollywood Has a Vegan Problem | Ep. 121

Today, we're talking about vegan representation in movies. Basically, how does Hollywood portray us vegans to an audience of millions? Why do movies so often miss the mark, misunderstanding us or turning us into the butt of the joke? Why do science fiction movies so often imagine the future as vegan? Is Okja a good vegan movie or not? Those are some of the questions we'll be answering today. The Cage-Free Gaslight | Ep. 120

What if I told you that cage-free campaigns are not only ineffective at helping hens, but may actually cause more suffering—and even set back the animal rights movement? That claim might surprise you, or even shock you, considering how many major animal rights organizations have embraced this strategy and how many millions of dollars have been invested in cage-free advocacy over the years. Yet this has become the view of a growing number of activists, organizations, researchers, and veterinarians who believe it's time to rethink the cage-free approach. Japan: Towards a Vegan Future? | Ep. 119

Today, we travel to Japan and discover its burgeoning vegan and animal rights activist community. Japan is often considered one of the worst countries in terms of animal protection - compared to the West and to its Asian neighbors. But could that be starting to change? To discuss this topic, I am joined by Anita Dollar, also known as the Osaka Vegan. Anita is an animal rights activist and creator who is doing the incredible work of promoting veganism in Japan. If you're planning to visit Japan, I absolutely recommend her Vegan in Japan Cheat Sheet: https://linktr.ee/anita.dollar In our conversation, we discuss the many forms of animal exploitation that exist across Japan, how accessible and rewarding vegan living can be there, why anime culture may not be helping the animal rights movement, and Anita's recent reporting on Buddhist temples that have moved away from their traditionally vegetarian roots. We cover all of that and much more. Is Palantir Spying on You? | Ep. 117

Have you ever heard of Palantir? Palantir builds data software that governments and corporations use to organize massive databases and... power mass surveillance. I won't go through every software they created, but you might know a few of them since their products always generate a backlash - like Operation Laser - which is a software that allows you to predict crimes. Yes, exactly like the movie Minority Report. I think it was dismantled after public pressure and lots of lawsuits... Well, that same company has secured a 300 million dollars contract with the United Stated Department of Agriculture. The goal of that partnership is, and I quote: "empowering USDA with core capabilities that will enable it to secure American farmland, enhance supply chain resilience, and shield agricultural programs from fraud, abuse, and foreign adversary influence." Now that is a lot of money, and that goal is very vague, and the company does not have the best of reputation. The USDA also does not have the best of reputation, siding again and again with private interests against the welfare of animals. All of that reeks, and it has lead my guest today, Robert Grillo, to raise concerns about the possibility of a mass surveillance operation against the animal rights movement. Robert Grillo is an activist, author and speaker working to build grassroots momentum and popular support to advance a plant-based food system. He leverages major trigger events like rising food prices, bird flu and the farm bill debate to stage actions that capture the public and media’s attention. Free from Harm, the organization he founded, is dedicated to advancing plant-based, animal-free food production for a safer, more humane and sustainable future. Together, we discussed the place of money in the animal rights movement, but also its corrupting power in politics. How our movement lacks ambition. The promise of cultivated meat. And much more. Plants Have Feelings: The First Person Who Said It

For this episode, I want to take you back in time to the very first recorded moment someone used the phrase “plants have feelings” – or a version of that - as an argument against animal sentience. Not on Reddit, not on Twitter — we’re talking the year 1391, in the late Middle Ages. And the person who said it wasn’t some random guy in a tavern. It was a Byzantine emperor, using this line of reasoning in a debate with an Imam. What If the World’s Religions Stood Up for Animals? When Left & Right Unite for Animals | Ep. 116

This was a fascinating conversation because we brought together two animal rights advocates from opposite ends of the political spectrum. David Michel was elected as a Democratic representative in the state of Connecticut, so he comes from the political left. Liam Gray, on the other hand, is a conservative, a veteran, and the founder of the animal protection think tank, the Wilberforce Institute. And then we had Sandro Jenni, a researcher at the University of Zurich’s Psychology Personality Lab, who—true to his Swiss heritage—remained impressively neutral, offering thoughtful insights and valuable data throughout the discussion. So every perspective was represented as we explored how to motivate animal advocates to engage politically at a time when so many feel disillusioned with the political class, why politicians aren’t working harder to earn the votes of the millions of vegetarians and vegans out there, and much more. David Michel is on Substack, so be sure to subscribe. (https://substack.com/@davidmichel1/posts) You can also find his writing as a contributor to the CT Examiner. Investigating the Evil of Factory Farming. With Gail Eisnitz | Ep. 114

Gail is the winner of the Albert Schweitzer Medal for outstanding achievement in animal welfare. She is the chief investigator for the Humane Farming Association. Her work as an investigator helped shut down some of the worst, most cruel animal‑exploitation operations in the U.S. But that's nothing compared to the impact of her first book, Slaughterhouse, which not only inspired many people to become vegan, but also shifted the focus of our entire movement toward factory farming, put pressure on regulators and lawmakers to enforce animal welfare laws, and became a template and inspiration for new generations of animal‑rights investigators. Now Gail is back with a new book, Out of Sight. I highly recommend the book. Visit the episode notes to get it now. In addition to talking about her book, we discussed the mysterious force for good that has guided Gail throughout her life, but also the evil she has confronted; how her life was threatened in this line of work, her thoughts on the welfarism vs. abolitionism debate, more specifically the cage-free standard, and much more. Follow or subscribe to the show now. You don't want to miss next week's episode — a special group conversation with 3 other animal rights heroes: Captain Paul Watson, Gary Yourofsky, and Dr. Jerry Vlasak. Why Vegans Are Smarter. With Chris Bryant | Ep. 111

Today, we’re asking a fun—and maybe slightly provocative—question: are vegans smarter than most people? You’ve probably seen those articles listing brilliant minds who were vegetarian for ethical reasons—people like Einstein, Tolstoy, Mary Shelley, or Leonardo da Vinci. And if you’ve been with us for a while, you might remember episode 37, where we talked about one of those great minds: the literary genius Al‑Ma’arri, often considered the first vegan in recorded history. So today we’re wondering: did their intellect lead them to the ethical principles we hold? And beyond these outliers, do we see the same pattern in the general population? To explore this, I’m joined by Chris Bryant. Chris is a social scientist and an expert on meat reduction and alternative proteins. He leads Bryant Research, and he’s also a prolific creator on YouTube. I actually joined him during one of his livestreams to record this episode—it was my first time doing a livestream, so that was an adventure in itself. You can find links to connect with Chris in the episode notes. In our conversation, we talk about the relationship between intelligence and veganism, but we also get into psychopaths, the dangers of animal activism, cannibalism, his experiences debating the “meat heads” of the internet, and a whole lot more. What If the World’s Religions Stood Up for Animals? With Joyce D'Silva | Ep. 110

Have you ever considered what it would mean if global religions echoed and supported our fight for animals? To explore this question, I have the honor of welcoming a true hero of the movement: Joyce D'Silva. Joyce has been vegan for 52 years—longer than I’ve been alive—and her contributions to animals are extraordinary. She wrote one of the first-ever vegan cookbooks, lead the adoption of major animal welfare legislation in the UK and Europe, and continues her work, to this day as Ambassador Emeritus for Compassion in World Farming and Patron of the Animal Interfaith Alliance. She is also the author of Animal Welfare in World Religion: Teaching and Practice. I highly recommend getting multiple copies —one for yourself and your enjoyment, and others to share with the religious leaders of your town. Beyond religion, Joyce and I discuss the nature of evil, the idea of publicly naming wealthy factory farm and slaughterhouse owners, the most surreal moment of her life, and much more.
