The SHE Word - Building Back From Break Ups
Break Ups are one of the most unspoken topics we have sat down to discuss. Unless you stay with the very first person you meet, everyone is impacted by break ups - they are an inevitable part of life - but more often than not, they aren’t pretty, they can be painful and brutal. We don’t talk about them - because it isn’t easy to chat about what can be ugly. Break Ups happen for a reason. At best two people decide that they are no longer heading in the same direction and amicably decide to part ways. More often break ups involve unmet expectations, money troubles, family and friends opinions and input, or even betrayal and abuse. The fall out from family and financial dynamics, and adjusting to a new life, can be far reaching - way beyond the obvious. Whatever the reason, Break Ups are an isolating grief. What you had hoped for is gone. The future you were building is no longer there. But. There is a life after a break up, and everyone on this show is evidence of that. In this episode Trudy sits down with Martine Cutajar, Claudia Faniello and Maria Azzopardi to discuss the variety of ways a break up can hit and how to move on. The lessons learned and the wisdom gained. Building back up after a break up might not be easy - there will be tears, soul searching, denial, anger, bargaining, depression, but finally hopefully healing, acceptance and moving forwards. The SHE Word Mums - The Conversation About Fertility
Most girls grow up assuming or expecting that motherhood will be a natural step once they find the right person and decide that it’s the right time- after all that’s what we’ve always been taught. However, what happens when life is not as simple as portrayed from the eyes of a girl or a young teenager? This episode explores the theme of fertility and the journey to becoming a mum, the hardship, the heartache, and all the things in between that we aren’t prepared for and rarely spoken about. Nerissa Massa sits down with Dr.Christine Schembri Deguara, Angele Satariano and Christina Zammit La Rosa as they open up about their fertility journeys. The raw and emotional conversation takes us through the acceptance that fertility may not be as straightforward as we imagined. Either because of being in a same sex relationship or because falling pregnant just wasn’t happening, these women take us with them on their rollercoaster of IUI, IVF- the time commitment, the emotional, mental and financial impact it has had on them and their family and friends. Dr. Christine explains and sheds light on the problem women (and men) are facing with infertility these days, why this is and importantly what we can do to put us in the best place when we decide we are ready to go for it. She always helps with some myth busting which brings clarity especially to couples who are going through this process often feeling vulnerable and desperate. The SHE Warriors - Emma Agius - One Woman’s Fight For Justice
Content Warning: This show discusses themes of SA and Mental Health Some women’s extraordinary stories come from the ashes of tragedy and trauma. Emma Agius recently hit the headlines with her fight in not only a personal battle, but a win that has implications for every woman in this country and across the continent. Emma has spoken very openly about her challenges with mental health, her depression and suicidal thoughts. She has been very public about her experiences at the mental health facility in Malta, Mount Carmel, and being treated for borderline personality disorder. But in 2022 Emma shared her account of her care worker visiting her at home, guiding her to get into bed and then getting into bed next to her, and r*ping her. As with so many instances of r*pe, Emma did not scream, she fawned and froze - a reaction that is now widely recognised as a danger response.   However, when Emma pressed changes against the man in question the magisterial inquiry had concluded that the case did not constitute rape, as the sex was deemed consensual. Emma’s battle for justice lead her to face the darkest days of her life, dealing not only with the assault itself and the shame that so many women and men feel as victims, but also the verdict that the perpetrator had not committed a crime and that her silence was interpreted as consent. Emma’s story, and the eventual win has implications for not just Emma, but all women, men and children as to what we deem as consent. Emma’s account is honest, heartbreaking, graphic and powerful. A must-listen that is not necessarily comfortable, but crucial. Raising children has never been simple, but today's parents are navigating challenges that previous generations could have never imagined. Dr Tasha Attard, a mum of 2, a behavioural analyst, and the owner of the bridge by BxConsultancy, Dr Lucianne Zammit, a mum of 2, a lecturer in Ethics education at the University of Malta, with a PHD in promoting the responsible use of technology in schools. Dr Erika Galea, a mum of 2, a cognitive and developmental psychologist. She is a lecturer within the department of Early Childhood and Primary Education at the University of Malta. Dr Erika is the founder of the Educational Neuroscience Hub Europe and the co author of the book called 'Teaching Generation Alpha in the Classroom’. Together and from the pov of mothers, we discuss the growing pressure parents feel when their child is one of the few without a smartphone, and the guilt and self-doubt that can arise when it seems like ‘everyone else's child’ is already connected online. The conversation dives into the impact of social media use at a young age, the rise of YouTube Shorts and other short-form content, and what emerging research suggests about attention spans, brain development, emotional regulation, and social skills. We also explore the growing phenomenon of AI companions and digital relationships, asking what this could mean for children's development and future connections. We have incredibly difficult but extremely important discussions about declining mental health among young people and how in some unbearably tragic cases, how this has led to suicide. We also speak about the vital role of digital literacy helping children not only stay safe online but also how they can become critical thinkers, using technology responsibly. Our guests share practical advice, reassurance, and empowering strategies for parents who are trying to find the right balance in an increasingly digital world. The SHE Word - Women and ADHD, the neurodivergent superpower
ADHD remains a largely misunderstood and often misdiagnosed condition. Despite growing awareness, chronic underdiagnosis has historically hindered millions from getting support. Recent years however, have seen a surge in adult diagnoses. ADHD diagnoses in women aged 23–49 nearly DOUBLED between 2020 and 2022, with 50% of adult women diagnosed with ADHD received their diagnosis in adulthood, often after an average 5-year delay compared to men. Women are significantly more prone to misdiagnoses due to frequently masking their struggles. Three well-known personalities join Trudy for this show to share their own journeys and experiences - the positive, and the very real challenges. Demaris Agius is a much loved content creator and advocate for ADHD, having received her ADHD diagnosis three years ago. Makenda is a Maltese resident, French national model, events producer and brand strategist who first spoke about her ADHD journey on The SHE Word over two years ago. Dr Chiara Frendo Balzan is one of Malta’s most well known Gynaecologists who recently spoke openly at The SHE Talks about her challenges with undiagnosed ADHD through childhood and her journey to become a doctor. These women speak openly about being misunderstood, the feeling of failure, the loneliness that can come from isolation that is associated with ADHD. But the three guests so clearly instantly bond over their common bond, finishing each other’s sentences and nodding at the mention of the traits that define the condition, encouraging each other and referencing the Spiderman Meme that so aptly describes the connection between three women from different nationalities, different backgrounds, but instantly connected. The group also address that whilst social media has helped reduce stigma, it has also led to concerns over the self-diagnosis of common, everyday struggles. Domestic Violence affects one in three women in their life time. Let that sink in for a moment, one in three women will experience physical, emotional, mental, financial or sexual abuse from an intimate partner, a parent, a sibling or someone else within the home. But, there is life after DV as Pearl Vella-Harber so publicly demonstrated; there can be courage and closure after abuse. The SHE Word dives into this topic for a third time as Trudy sits down with Pearl Vella Haber, Nancy Abela and Elaine Compagno to take a look at various stages of surviving and overcoming DV, from the acknowledgement of violence and calling it out for what it is, to planning an exit. From sitting with grief and anger, to building a new and complete life. Pearl shares the impact of her own experiences of manipulation, isolation, name calling and threats that shaped her childhood and early adult life; the turning point that helped her build her life again, as well as the breaking point that lead to her taking a stand and facing her perpetrators. Trauma therapist Nancy Abela not only shares her own personal story but the journey that lead her to become and Trauma Therapist, specialising in Narcissistic abuse and how she helps other women as they navigate the after effects of DV and the therapeutic process the will guide them to a full and free life. Elaine is back on her second appearance talking about DV, the sometimes unexpected fall out of recovery, and to offer personal account as well as practical advice. Miriana Conte is the fantastically flamboyant and often outrageous personality behind one of Malta’s most controversial Eurovision entries, which had gone viral all over the world even before she had won the national competition. ‘Serving Kant’ caused outcry in the UK particularly due to the play on words with Britain’s rudest swear word. English Eurovision host and BBC Radio presenter Scott Mills said on his radio show just before the song contest "We can't talk about Malta's one at all. We definitely can't play a clip of it... ever, on the BBC.” The song also caused a significant stir here at home, with Miriana receiving overwhelming hate comments attacking her on her style, her song, her figure and her family. But behind the public persona is a shy, wise, humble and incredibly likeable young women who is an outstanding vocalist and song writer. In this edition of SHE WARRIORS, Trudy sits down with Miriana for a deep dive into her image, ambitions, challenges, her battles, and the source of her self belief. The two women take the conversation through the journey of Serving Kant and how this epic anthem was born; the inspiration, the response, the encouragement and the outrage. The SHE Word - Healing From Sexual Harassment and Assault
In the first quarter of 2026 three headlines hit the news ad sparked outrage; CNN published an investigation into a website who’s content included an ‘academy’ that not only instructed men on how to dr*g and r*pe their wives and partners, but also published the footage of these crimes - the website received over 62 million views alone. The UK government introduced new legislation to site public sexual harassment is a standalone criminal offense following research that indicates that 86% of young women (aged 18–24) in the UK have experienced sexual harassment in public spaces. And lastly fifty-two cases of r*pe of women were reported to the police in Malta last year, statistically a case a day. But most data indicates that around 80-90% of incidents go unreported, with factors such as shame, fear of not being believed, and fear of retaliation preventing victims from reporting. All three headlines brought long overdue attention to the crisis of SA and SH, with both men and women speaking out and calling for change but what happens when the algorithm moves on, what happens to the outcry, and most importantly what happens to the women left to face the often long lasting effects of harassment or assault. In this hard hitting, openly honest and occasionally uncomfortable episode Trudy sits down with Beatboxer, songwriter and mindset coach Dana McKeon, empowerment coach Mei Berrit and Counselling Psychology Practitioner from Richmond Marie Noelle Lanzon to share personal experiences, delve into the impact of their experiences - physically emotionally, mentally and relationally - and talk through the topic with a focus on healing. The conversation also looks at why perpetrators do what they do, the sliding scale of inappropriate and harmful behaviour, the culture of shame, and what we can do to change the attitude towards harmful behaviour and make a safer environment. Despite recently being awarded ‘The Most Remarkable Woman’ at the Mara Awards, Daniela Calleja Bitar is an extraordinarily private person, you will be hard pressed to find out anything about Daniela online. However, as the CEO of the Richmond Foundation, Daniela has dedicated her life to making change in the field of mental health and in doing so, affecting thousands of men and women. In this down to earth SHE Warriors interview Dan sits down with Trudy to share her journey working in the area of mental health. Daniela reflects on her first interview with the Richmond Foundation 25 years ago to today where she and her team have been ‘silently vocal’ over the past two and a half decades to change the perception of mental health and the support provided. Financial independence and security is a topic that I would suggest we ALL find hard to discuss. Talking about money is often an uncomfortable conversation, let alone discussing scams, investments and our financial security. However, finances and financial health is a topic that affects every single one of us in one way or another. For women particularly, financial security is crucial; over 70% of women are in employment but over 64% of women are also mothers, presenting the ‘career break challenge’ and the financial challenges that are associated with balancing both aspects of life. In this special edition of The SHE Word, Trudy sits down with three women from the MFSA to discuss two main areas of financial health that are particularly topical right now. Firstly Adelina Andreea Nechita from the MFSA Enforcement team tackles the topic of scams with Trudy. Scammers and scamming has become big business and is now a multi-billion Euro global illegal industry. Scamming is a high-tech, high turnover enterprise with one goal; to convince us to part with our money - using a variety of well practiced and effective tactics. The SHE Word Mums - Relationships and Love after Children
Here at The SHE Word we have discussed SO MANY topics which impact mums - especially in the early years of motherhood and this topic is another issue which so many mums face - the change in relationship with your partner after becoming parents. In this episode the four mums at the table sit down to discuss the changes that take place after bringing a baby home (and baby 2 and baby 3!) and the challenges that they were not (or least) expecting.
