Your host, Mark Minkus, has been a private school leader for over 30 years. He’s been where you are. He’s been in the hospital with ulcers. He’s had his daughters ask, “Dad, when do we get to see you instead of the back of your laptop?” About 10 years ago, Mark went from surviving to thriving and he is here to help you do the same! You will learn step by step strategies to effectively deal with difficult parents, overcome burnout, change your school’s culture, increase your productivity, improve teacher morale and more! Most importantly, you will learn how to effectively lead your school while still taking care of your mind, body and spirit. Sounds impossible, right? It’s not!

    Episode 199: OREO Cookies Can Help You Tame Your Email Inbox

    Has this ever happened to you? You are out and about in the school and you come back to your office. While you were out of your office, you expended emotional energy and now you are feeling some decision fatigue and some physical fatigue. You sit down at your desk. Because of the physical and mental fatigue, your brain is skipping for a hit of dopamine. You click on the tab for your inbox and you start responding to emails. If the above scenario has happened to you, you are in good company. About 90% of private school leaders do this multiple times a day. Unfortunately, you have just fallen into the “false productivity trap.” I have said many times: “Your email inbox is a chronological list of everyone else’s priorities.” The “trap” is that you are feeling productive, you get the dopamine hit, but you are working on other people’s tasks.     Episode 198: A Great School Year Rarely Happens By Accident (Do These 3 Things On Purpose)

    In 1928, Scottish scientist Alexander Fleming returned from vacation to find that one of his petri dishes had accidentally become contaminated with mold. Normally, that would have meant throwing the dish away and starting over. But, Fleming noticed something unusual. The bacteria surrounding the mold had died, while bacteria farther away continued to grow. He became curious and asked, "Why?" That mold, Penicillium notatum, contained a natural substance capable of killing many harmful bacteria. Fleming had accidentally discovered penicillin, the world's first widely used antibiotic. Years later, scientists developed a way to mass-produce penicillin, and it went on to save millions of lives, especially during World War II. What looked like a ruined experiment turned out to be one of the greatest medical breakthroughs in history. Penicillin, the microwave oven, the Post-it Note and chocolate chip cookies are just a few examples of some pretty amazing things in this world that happened completely by accident. But, having a great school year by accident almost never happens.     Episode 197: 3 Strategies To Feel Less Overwhelmed AND Get Everything Done Before The First Day Of School

    Has this ever happened to you? You looked at your to-do list in late July or early August and thought: "There is absolutely no way I'm going to get all of this done." You walk into the school and there are boxes of new curriculum stacked in the hallway, waiting to be unpacked, an employee handbook that needs to be revised, welcome back emails that need to be sent, two more teachers that need to be hired, Teacher In-Service Days that need to be planned, class lists that need to be finalized and maintenance requests that need to be sent. And all of that happens before 10AM on a Tuesday. If that's where you are today, I want you to know two things. First, you're not alone. Almost every school leader I coach feels this way during the last few weeks before school starts. And second, I am going to help make it better.     Episode 194: 2 Important Leadership Lessons From "The Karate Kid"

    On June 22, 1984, I was sitting in a movie theater. I love 80’s movies and there were so many good ones. Top Gun, Footloose, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, Rocky IV and The Goonies were some of my favorites. I was lucky enough to see most of them the day they came out in the theater. On June 22, 1984, I was sitting there watching Karate Kid. Daniel LaRusso moved from New Jersey to LA, got beat up by bullies, met Mr. Miyagi then entered a karate tournament where his opponent was the biggest bully of them all. What an awesome movie! It raked in $100M at the box office, spawned multiple sequels and the TV show Cobra Kai and is now a part of American pop culture.     Episode 193: Is Your School Ready For The "Unplugged Movement" And "The Digital Delusion" Backlash?

    I want to begin with a prediction. I believe that over the next two years, one of the biggest conversations in independent and private schools will be answering the following question: “How much technology actually belongs in the classroom? For almost twenty years, schools have raced toward more technology. We have become 1:1 and we have purchased iPads and online curriculums and apps and other types of educational technology. Of course, this has led to more screen time, especially during COVID. A growing movement has emerged that many people are calling the "Unplugged Movement." At the same time, a new book called The Digital Delusion by neuroscientist Dr. Jared Cooney Horvath has become one of the most talked-about books in education circles. The important things to remember are: Your parents are going to hear about this book. Your parents and board members are going to hear about the unplugged movement.     As you read this, it is late June and July is just over the horizon. During my career as a private school leader, this was always my favorite time of the year. Most of the reasons are pretty obvious: My annual vacation with my family in Ocean City, NJ My favorite holiday is the 4th of July! Warm weather and lots of fun outdoor activities But if I am being honest, there is another reason that I love late June and early July: The building is quiet and no parents are calling me I am not receiving emails from parents with capital letters and exclamation points I am not leaving at the end of the day with a parent living rent-free in my head I hate to be the one that reminds you of this, but when the kids come back in August, the parents come back too… Most parents are fine, or workable or even great! But, some of our parents can cause a lot of stress.     Episode 191: Your Employee Handbook Revisions Should Be Written For Your Best Teachers (Not Your Worst)

    It's mid-June, the students and teachers are gone and the building is pretty quiet. Many private school leaders are sitting down with a bottle of water, last year's Employee Handbook, and a red pen. For better or for worse, this is handbook season. This is the time of year when we review policies, update language, make revisions, and prepare for the upcoming school year. Unfortunately, when handbook season rolled around, I made the same mistake year after year after year. Let me know if this sounds familiar. During the year, a teacher would do something annoying and frustrating: Maybe they repeatedly showed up late. Maybe they didn’t meet deadlines on report cards. Maybe they sent emails with grammatical errors. Maybe they missed recess duty or lunch duty. Maybe they failed to communicate with parents when small issues bubbled up. And what did I do? I created a new policy. I added another paragraph. I made the handbook more specific. I added another potential consequence. And then one day I realized that my employee handbook looked less like a professional guidebook and more like a legal document written to control the worst employee I ever had.     Episode 190: Productivity Lessons From A Garden Hose (How To Go From "Mist" To "Jet")

    You probably have a garden hose at your house. If you take a look at the spray nozzle at the end of your hose, you are very likely to see five words. Mist. Shower. Flat. Cone. Jet. When your hose is on “Mist”, the water kind of goes everywhere, but it is a weak stream and pretty scattered and not very powerful. It is a whole different story when you rotate over to “Jet.” A very powerful stream of water can do some damage if you are not careful about where you are aiming your hose. It’s the same hose, with the same amount of water and the same pressure, but completely different results. I think you can probably see where I am going with this. When the “tyranny of the urgent” takes over, our energy is scattered and inefficient. However, on those rare occasions when we really get into a flow of focused work, we get to feel the flood of dopamine that comes with being highly productive.     Episode 188: Don’t Finish The School Year Without Asking Yourself These 4 Questions

    I have never run a marathon. My right knee gets sore when I drive 26.2 miles. That said, I have a lot of respect for people who have finished a marathon. My wife’s side of the family lives in Northeast Ohio and many of them have finished multiple marathons. They have even driven to other states to run in marathons in other cities. Inexplicable to me. Fun for them. Whether in person or on TV, you have seen marathon runners cross the finish line. Some of them have a big smile on their face, a pep in their step and look like they could keep running forever. On the other hand, others look disoriented and dehydrated and they stumble across the finish line and right into an ambulance. I think that the last day of school is very similar to the finish line of a marathon. Whether you walked, stumbled or sprinted across that finish line, you are about to do something that you shouldn’t do, yet… One of the worst things we can do as leaders is immediately shift into high gear getting ready for the next school year without reflecting on the year we just lived through. I want to help you “press pause” before you move into next school year. If we wait until we feel confident to do hard things, we are less likely to do hard things. But, you don’t have to stay stuck any longer.     You have probably heard the quote that “a school year is a marathon, not a sprint.” That being said, the weeks between now and the last day of school sure feel like a sprint. Not only that, when you get close to the finish line it feels like it just keeps moving farther and farther away. You are about to start “The 100 Days of May” (one of my coaching clients told me that they call it “Maycember” at her school) and the packed calendar that goes along with it. Over the next 6 weeks, you and your teachers will probably work harder (and later) than at any other point during the school year. How you lead the last 6 weeks of the school year matters more than you think.     Episode 181: The Leadership Lie That Is Keeping You Stuck

    On August 15, 1973, Richard Nixon gave a televised address to the American people from the White House. During that speech, Nixon said, “I had no knowledge of the Watergate break-in and I had no involvement in it.” His supporters believed him, but the investigation would eventually reveal that he had lied. The Watergate tapes were released to the American public on August 5, 1974. Just 3 days later, Richard Nixon became the only President to resign and Watergate became known as the largest scandal in the history of American politics. When we tell a lie, there are usually consequences. When we lie to ourselves, there are almost always significant consequences.     Has this ever happened to you? You receive an email from an upset parent, an upset teacher or an upset board member. The email makes you angry.
